BBC viewers were left in tears on Monday as the broadcasting channel unveiled their brand new Christmas advert. UK stores such as John Lewis and Sainsbury’s usually get everybody talking with their tear-jerking ads, but the BBC have definitely managed to give them a run for their money this year. The animated clip titled “Chrismas […]...

Director Michel Gondry (Be Kind Rewind, Eternal Sunshine For The Spotless Mind) helmed this absolutely charming Christmas commercial called Moz The Monster for the U.K.-based department store John Lewis. The ad certainly captures the magic of the holiday season.
The story follows a young boy named Joe who ends up befriending a monster who lives under his bed. Here's the description that was released for it:
Joe befriends a noisy Monster under his bed but the two have so much fun together that he can't get to sleep, leaving him tired by day. For Christmas Joe receives a gift to help him finally get a good night’s sleep.
The ad has a little mix of Monster's Inc., Little Monsters, and Where the Wild Things Are in it. It may tell a sweet story, but I won't lie... it's kinda sad as well. You'll see why when you watch the video.

This pious digimation of the Christmas story contains nothing to frighten the donkeys with its rote wisecracks and slavish devotion to the Pixar formula
Some films are fated to be no more than the sum of their production companies. This seasonal digimation is almost exactly what you might imagine from a collaboration between Sony’s evangelical offshoot, Affirm Films, and Narnia deliverers Walden Media: it takes an idea with the potential for irreverent fun – retelling the Nativity from the animals’ perspective – then plays everything straighter than the average Sunday-school sermon.
Little donkey Boaz’s quest to escape his yoke and serve some higher purpose meets the religious brief; accompanying him through the usual series of helter-skelter set pieces, the rotely wisecracking Dave the dove swiftly puts paid to hopes of divine inspiration, while kooky sheep Abby hews so close to Ellen DeGeneres’ Dory in personality that you can hear the Pixar lawyers’ phones vibrating.

The deals have been divided into days, with the first deals going live today
If you’ve got kids, or even adults who are young at heart, there is no better gift than Lego.
From Star Wars to DC Comics, Marvel and even Frozen, there’s likely to be a set to suit anyones tastes and hobbies, and for five days, starting today, many of these sets are available directly from Lego with at least 20% off in what is being called Lego's Brick Friday and Cyber Monday event.
The deals have been divided into days, with the first deals going live today. As a result, the 20% won’t show on the Rrp until the day that particular deal goes live - and the deals run for that day only where listed. Some sets will then be available for the full five days, and others will have more than 20% off.

More deals than you can shake an ewok at
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away there was no such thing as Black Friday. I mean, the Rebel Alliance had their hands full trying to overthrow the Galactic Empire and weren’t ideally placed to assess whether saving 30% on toothbrushes was a good deal or if they’d just got deal blindness in a fit of bargain-induced madness. Not even considering that toothbrushes have yet to be introduced into the full Star Wars universe, given only certain aliens seem to have teeth.
Where was I? Oh yeah, Star Wars deals. Black Friday may not exist on Tatooine or Dagobah, but it is here on Earth. Here are the best Star Wars Black Friday bargains:
Assorted Propel Battle Drones (was £199.99, now £119.99)
Jon loved Propel’s Star Wars drones when he reviewed them back in September, but there was one little problem.

It hasn’t been the most enjoyable week for news from Hollywood, so if you need to head into the weekend with a smile, this Michel Gondry directed ad for U.K. retailer John Lewis will do the trick.
Riffing pretty hard on “Where The Wild Things Are” (to the point where I think the Maurice Sendak estate might have a case), the charming promo follows a young boy, who befriends the monster under his bed, playing with him all night long.

With Michel Gondry helming John Lewis’s latest lampshade-peddling showpiece, we look at movie-makers’ mixed attempts at marketing
If you want to turn the story of a little boy and an oversized Flump with windypops into a heartstring-tugging phenomenon, you probably need to maximise the sense of whimsy and childish wonder. So John Lewis hiring Michel Gondry, the visually inventive Frenchman behind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, to direct their Christmas advert makes a lot of sense. But is it always a great idea to attach a big-name director to your latest zeitgeist-chasing marketing push? The results, as these examples show, can be … mixed.

On Monday, the L.A. Zoo announced the passing of its 48-year-old Indian rhinoceros, Randa, due to age-related illness.
“Randa has been iconic throughout L.A. The story of AA Milne’s difficult relationship with his son is a bizarrely clenched and twee heritage drama that wallows in misery
The John Lewis Christmas TV ad has come early and it’s a nightmare. Domhnall Gleeson and Margot Robbie put on fraightfully upmarket English accents and stand around like tailor’s dummies in this bizarrely clenched and infantilised tragedy-twee heritage drama about AA Milne’s fraught relationship with his son Christopher Robin.
The poor, bewildered little moppet got roped into the Winnie the Pooh publicity machine as the books’ popularity exploded in the 1920s. Will Tilston plays the eight-year-old Cr, while Alex Lawther – on the verge of typecasting, I fear – plays the unhappier older teen version, bullied at his boarding school. Famed author Milne had served in the trenches during the first world war, and had suffered from Ptsd, or shell shock as it was then known...

Prince George is heading to school in style.
The 4-year-old royal’s first day at Thomas’s Battersea School in London is set for Sept. 7, and when he arrives (with mom Princess Kate and dad Prince William in tow), he’ll be wearing the co-ed school‘s uniform.
George has three different uniforms he’ll wear during his time at Thomas’s Battersea. The first is his “summer uniform,” which is likely what he’ll be wearing on his first day. It consists of a blue button-down shirt, shorts and a navy sweater with the school’s logo. To keep cool in the summer months,...

These are tumultuous political times, and the tumult is causing some celebrities to spout off impulsively on social media. Donald Trump isn't the only person tweeting insults that are getting people riled up; this week The Avengers director Joss Whedon angered conservative critics by wishing harm upon House Speaker Paul Ryan.
On Saturday, Whedon sent out a tweet in which he wished for the death of Ryan via a particularly humiliating attack by a rhinoceros. Whedon went on to say that he made the wish not because it would solve anything, but because it would be funny.
The tweet went largely unnoticed by the mainstream, but commentators on the right were suddenly outraged that a celebrity would use Twitter to make inappropriate disparaging remarks about people with whom he disagrees.

Donald Trump kicked off Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend by criticizing civil-rights icon and John Lewis and accusing him of “all talk ” and “no action or results.”

Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights icon who has been at the forefront of civil rights struggles, spoke poignantly about his own experience with racism Wednesday during a congressional hearing to confirm Sen. Jeff Sessions, President-elect Donald Trump‘s pick for attorney general.
Lewis, a Georgia Democrat, was one of three black members of Congress who testified against Sessions, joining Sen. Cory Booker and Rep. Cedric Richmond in protesting Sessions’ nomination along with other congressmen during confirmation hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Those in opposition at times referenced the allegations of racism Sessions has faced in the past.

Snapchat parent company Snap, Inc. has reportedly acquired an Israeli startup called Cimagine that lets consumers visualize products that they potentially want to buy within the setting that intend to use them. Snap paid between $30 million and $40 million for the augmented reality commerce platform, according to Techcrunch, which represents the company’s first acquisition in Israel.
Cimagine has worked with Coca-Cola, Hsn, John Lewis, U.K. e-tailer Shop Direct, and the California furniture franchise Jerome’s to provide trial effects for their respective websites and apps. Techcrunch speculates that Snapchat could employ similar technology for augmented reality ad campaigns, such as one conducted alongside Starbucks this summer that enabled users to superimpose lenses over their Frappuccinos.

Prepare for the tears: Holiday commercials are here.
Every year, advertisers manage to make us experience a year’s worth of emotions in a number of 30-second spots, whether it’s joy, sadness, or just simple Christmas spirit.
Here’s a few commercials that already have us reaching for the tissue box — and it’s not even Thanksgiving yet!

Festive tales about the comforts of family don’t work unless the joy is spiked with pain – from Dickens to Elf and It’s a Wonderful Life
For many, Christmas means movies. For the analog generation, who grew up before the home-entertainment revolution, iTunes, DVDs or even VHS rental, Christmas was that super-special time when you could see top films on television and drawing a red circle around the 5pm James Bond slot in your festive double-issue of the Radio Times. The standing joke used to be that the top Christmas film on other less important days was The Great Escape, because that always seemed to be on TV about that time; a Hollywoodised but not-especially-Christmassy story of a mass PoW breakout during the second world war.
Films actually about Christmas are prized for comfort-food verities: picturesque fantasy, sentimentality, optimism, images imported from northern Europe via the Coca-Cola Santa ads of the 20th century.

News stories from around the world that might just warm your heart, and put a smile on your face...
Lots of people struggle at this time of year. What's more, it's often hard to find stories of happiness in the mass media. But they are out there. The world has no shortage of genuine, kind people who are going out of their way to help friends and strangers alike.
The world might not be perfect, but let's take a moment to celebrate some of the things that make it a little brighter.
A woman's lost purse was returned to her after a homeless man in Cardiff found it and tracked her down. The woman has now set up a crowdfunding campaign to help the stranger have a better Christmas http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/post-homeless-man-cardiff-restore-12294701; https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/DarrenDeservesXmasToo (thanks to Simon Burgess...

â.My feet are tired from all this marching, but I won’t stop,â. Joan Baez told a packed house at Boston’s Wang Center earlier this month. She’s not lying. The music icon began her career in the midst of the countercultural and civil rights activism of the 1960s, and remains today a globally recognized artist who sings songs of peace and social justice.
Now 75, Baez continues to dedicate her life to nonviolent action and human rights. She has partnered with the Innocence Project for her current tour, acting as an ambassador for their tireless work combatting wrongful convictions.

Hallelujah! Over the weekend, I had a revelation.
March, by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell, is the answer to every question, the solution to every problem.
Let me explain how I came to see the light.
I was at a conference for American Jews interested in increasing the opportunities for a shared society among Jewish and Arab Israelis. In attendance were representatives from various American Jewish funding organizations as well as Israeli Jewish and Arab leaders. It was heady stuff for me, and I was thrilled to see that Israeli Arabs are just as opinionated (and enjoy a good argument) as much as I do.
All of us being Semites, of course we wanted to eat. A lot. Over meals, we didn’t just discuss policy and programs. We talked about current events (oy) and our various jobs and interests. When I said I worked in comics and was writing a graphic novel,...

If you take this survey, our parent company has promised us extra coffee (*). Oh, and some gift vouchers are up for grabs too...
Right then. Hello. Can we ask for a bit of help? Our mothership parent company is doing a bit of research, and is offering a prize of John Lewis vouchers to five participants who take part (five winners will get £100 of vouchers each). We sometimes look in the window of John Lewis on our way to Primark, and we gather it is very pleasant.
Anyway: each of the websites run by said mothership company is running the following survey, and apparently, Den Of Geek is currently in last place. Mainly because we've not told you about it so far. Still, if that continues, our backsides are set to be sore (and not in any pleasurable sense, lest you think we’re going all...

On paper, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Curse Of The Black Pearl probably shouldn’t have been a hit. Earlier movies based on Disney’s theme park rides certainly hadn’t been a success - least of all The Country Bears, a family film released a year before Pirates and largely shunned by audiences. Disney boss Michael Eisner moaned at Pirates’ steep $140m bill. Did it have to be so expensive? And could Johnny Depp - hardly known as a bankable star - really lead the movie to box office glory?
The answer was a resounding yes; released in the summer of 2003, Pirates Of The Caribbean made over $650m worldwide. Pirates also appeared to break two curses in one blow: first, it proved that adventure movies set on the...

“Chicago is not the most corrupt American city, it’s the most theatrically corrupt.” Studs Terkel.
With due respect (and a lot of it) for the late, great Studs Terkel, I think the Chicago city council has been supplanted by the Congress of the United States for political theater and corruption. As an old Chicago boy and fan of political theater, I was fascinated this week as the Democrats in the House of Representatives staged a sit-in in the well of the House, led by the venerable civil rights leader (and graphic novel author) John Lewis, to protest the refusal of the Republican leadership to even permit a vote on two very small and very specific gun control issues.
House Speaker Paul Ryan dismissed the sit-in as a “publicity stunt.” Well, duh. That’s what a sit-in is, a publicity stunt to draw attention to a specific problem. Ryan himself...
