Warner Premiere has picked up the rights to the best-selling young-adult series The Clique and will partner with the books' developers and producers Alloy Entertainment to expand the novels to DVD releases targeted at the tween-girl audience.
Told by way of an elite group of socially precocious 12-year-old girls from the wealthy suburbs north of New York, the books deal with the contemporary life of privileged teenagers and follow their ups and downs in junior high.
Liz Tigelaar, who worked on such TV series as Dawson's Creek and Kyle XY, has been tapped to write the scripts. Alloy's Les Morgenstein and Bob Levy will serve as producers on the project.
The first DVD title being produced, The Clique, will be based on the 2004 book that launched the series; it is expected to be released next year.
The series, written by Lisi Harrison, cq has sold more than 4 million copies domestically and has spent nearly 100 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list.
