Originally conceived as a standalone film without sequels, ‘Joker’ (2019) was intended to inaugurate DC Black, a series of darker and more experimental films distinct from the DC Extended Universe. Despite this, director Todd Phillips expressed interest in a sequel.
By November 2019, the sequel was officially confirmed to be in development. In 2023, Gunn confirmed that ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ would not be part of the mainline Dcu; instead, it would be released under the ‘Elseworlds’ label, aligning with Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ franchise.
The cast of the upcoming ‘Joker’ is set, with Joaquin Phoenix portraying Arthur Fleck, also known as The Joker, a mentally troubled criminal with a clown-inspired persona. Lady Gaga takes on the role of Harleen Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, an asylum inmate who becomes fixated on Arthur. Zazie Beetz plays Sophie Dumond, Arthur’s former neighbor, and a single mother. Both on the awards circuit and in the public consciousness, HBO is widely regarded as among the first Hollywood heavyweights to recognize that television, as a medium, had the power to deliver sprawling, large scale stories on a smaller screen. From HBO’s ascent in the late 1990s through its dragon-aided roar across the 2010s, the network’s original series tackled universal stories, stretching across continents and decades.
The network hasn’t been without controversy, though. HBO faced questions about its lack of diversity in flagship series, including “Game of Thrones” and “Girls,” throughout the 2010s. Avatar: The Last Airbender is heading into its second season with its third showrunner at the helm.
Showrunner Albert Kim, who replaced creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, is also exiting the Netflix live-action series. Co-executive producer Christine Boylan and exec producer Jabbar Raisani — both of whom were hired by Kim — will take over as the drama’s third showrunners for the previously announced second and third seasons.
Sources say Kim’s intention was to lay the foundation for season one of Avatar: The Last Airbender after stepping in for the beloved franchise’s creators. Given the long turnaround time in crafting the series — Netflix ordered it in 2018, the creators left in late 2020 and the show didn’t debut until February 2024 — sources say Kim was ready to move on to new opportunities.

When director Todd Phillips made his anti-superhero origin film about the classic Batman villain — with Joaquin Phoenix in the title role — it was designed to be a standalone film. While Phillips acknowledged he was open to making a follow-up under the right circumstances, he went so far as to stress a month before the film’s October 2019 release: “We have no plans for a sequel … The movie’s not set up to [have] a sequel. We always pitched it as one movie,...

The upcoming Joker sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, will be “mostly a jukebox musical,” featuring at least 15 covers of popular songs, according to a new report.
Directed by Todd Philips and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, Joker: Folie à Deux is due in October 2024, and though we’ve known it would be a musical since 2022, this is the first we’ve heard about the specifics of the songs. According to Variety, its “insiders privy to filming and early versions” who’ve confirmed the film’s “mostly jukebox” status.
Among the 15 covers will be the Judy Garland standard from The Band Wagon, “That’s Entertainment!” There is, too, the opportunity for “an original song (or two) to be added to the final version,” though details on who would compose or sing those numbers remain unknown.
Worth noting, though, is that Hildur Guðnadóttir, composer for 2019’s original Joker, is said to have...

Avatar: The Last Airbender, the anime-inspired live-action series, will be able to tell the story of the four nations: Water. Earth. Fire. Air after Netflix renewed it for a further two seasons.
The streamer has handed the show a two-season renewal order to conclude the story of Aang’s journey to become the Avatar.
It comes after the show premiered on Netflix on February 22 and recorded 41.1M views in its first 11 days, topping its TV list for the last two weeks and being on track to enter its top ten most-watched list over its first three months.
The plan is to film these two seasons – Seasons 2 and 3 – in close succession in order to mitigate the fact that child actors tend to grow up quickly.
The series comes from Rideback, whose boss Dan Lin, an exec producer on the series, was recently named Netflix’s new film chief, replacing Scott Stuber.

The Avatar: The Last Airbender universe is arguably one of the most exciting fantasy worlds that fans have ever dived into. Introducing its audiences to stunning characters who can telekinetically manipulate one out of the 4 major elements—air, water, earth, or fire—through ‘bending’, a practice inspired by the Chinese martial arts, the series garnered a massive fanbase.

One of the most asked of these was why Aang and the other Airbenders could not take flight. And while these questions weren’t answered by the creators, fans have found the answer to it by themselves via a wild theory.

Jason Isaacs is best recognized for his portrayal of Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies. He has been acting for over three decades, appearing in various films, TV shows, and stage productions.
Isaacs voiced the character Zhao in seven episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Nearly eight years later, he returned to the franchise for a cameo appearance as the same character in one episode of The Legend of Korra (set in the fictional world of Avatar: The Last Airbender).

It’s a true battle of fire and ice in the Season 1 finale of Avatar: The Last Airbender. On one side, there’s Avatar Aang (Gordon Cormier), Katara (Kiawentiio), Sokka (Ian Ousley), and the Northern Water Tribe. On the other, there’s the Fire Nation forces, led by Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu), his uncle Ihro (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee), and Commander Zhao (Ken Leung). The Fire Nation seems determined to take the Northern Water Tribe’s capital of Agna Qel’a — and defeat the Avatar once and for all — no matter who dies on their quest for world domination. Some are even willing to sacrifice the primal forces of nature, like the Moon Spirit, to do so.

When Netflix announced it would be remaking the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender into a live-action show, fans were immediately skeptical. The original show, created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, is considered one of the greatest animated series of all time. Why try to remake perfection? According to Albert Kim, showrunner for the Netflix adaptation, the reason goes deeper than just trying to capitalize on the popularity of the original. In fact, it stems from the disappearance of the original creators themselves.
Why Did The Original Creators Leave The Netflix Remake? Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender
According to Tatler, in 2018, when the remake was announced, Dimartino and Konietzko were on board as executive producers. But in 2020, the two abruptly departed the project over what they described as a lack of creative control.

A still from Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender
Netflix, in an effort to raise excitement and expectations, chose to keep the audition process under wraps by giving away very little information regarding the casting of characters. This approach led to quite a bit of confusion even for prospective actors like Ken Leung. Not being aware of the original series, Leung mistook the ‘Avatar’ in the title as a casting call for James Cameron’s epic masterpiece.

The auditions for Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, which premiered Feb. 22 on the streamer, were very cloak and dagger.
Netflix went to great lengths to keep the auditions secret – including writing fake scenes set in a bank. That caused some confusion among the auditoners.
And for Ken Leung, who wasn’t familiar with the original Nickelodeon animated series, Avatar had a different connotation, evoking the Na’vi from James Cameron’s blockbuster franchise.
“When I first heard it was Avatar, I thought I as going to be blue,” he said.
Watch him tell the story in the video below and introduce his character on the show, Commander Zhao.

This article contains spoilers for Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender episode 2.
Everyone loves Zuko. Avatar: The Last Airbender’s villain turned emo boy turned hero has one of the greatest character arcs in animation, if not all of television history. Starting as the bitter, vengeful nemesis to Avatar Aang, Zuko hoped that if he could capture the Avatar for his father, he’d finally be able to regain his honor. This single-minded approach meant that through much of the show’s first season, Zuko was the main villain. He was willing to burn the world down if it meant accomplishing his goal and that made him a genuine threat.
The Netflix live-action series, though largely faithful to the source material, makes a massive error in not understanding this key part of Zuko’s character early on. Season 1 episode 2 of the Netflix series, “Warriors” which adapts season 1 episode 4 of the original series,...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for episodes 3 and 4 of "Avatar: The Last Airbender"
With apologies to "Star Wars" fans, there are few sacred texts held up with such rapturous praise that can rival the protectiveness fans of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" harbor towards the animated show. Debuting almost two decades ago, the classic story of a mystical chosen one with the power of all four elements tasked with saving the world from a century-long war has taken on mythic proportions in the time since. And, not surprisingly, such acclaim has stacked the odds against any adaptation, whether it be M. Night Shyamalan's doomed feature film from 2010 or Netflix's attempt to bring the series back to life in live action.
The results have been mixed, as I laid out in my review for /Film, but that's really only scratching the surface. There are several factors behind the Netflix show's highs and lows alike,...
