Supergirl is one of my favorite characters, so I was delighted to read that there is a Supergirl television show in development.
Supergirl is one of my favorite characters, so I was terrified to read that there is a Supergirl television show in development.
There are several reasons for my conflicted feelings. When I was a girl, Kara Zor-El was my ideal. Not only was she blonde and cute (two adjectives not customarily applied to me), but she had powers, she was unsure of herself, and she was always trying to prove herself, not only to her cousin Superman, but to prospective parents who shopped at her orphanage. I wanted to have a robot double in a tree. I wanted to have a flying horse and a super-powered cat. Sometimes I wanted different parents.
I don’t think there is anything innately “feminine” about wanting super-powers, robots or flying pets.

It’s beginning to appear as though we’re moving away from one of the pillars of superherodom, the secret identity. Even though this movement started back in the early 1960s with The Fantastic Four, it’s moved slowly up to the breakthrough moment in the first Iron Man movie.
Of course, that was telegraphed a few years before by my pal Mike Grell during his run on the comic book, but Marvel squeezed that back in the tubes where it sat until the movie people showed them Mike was right in the first place.
Such pettiness aside, I welcome the departure from tradition. The secret identity was almost always a stupid idea. Clark Kent became Superman to protect his friends and loved ones from harm? Okay, fine. I can appreciate that even the Man of Steel can not keep an eye on Lois Lane, Lana Lang, Lori Lemaris, Lex Luthor (well,...

In the latest of our comprehensive series of reviews of DC Comics' 52 relaunched titles, we take a look at Supergirl #1. Who's it by?
Supergirl #1 is written by Michael Green and Mike Johnson (Superman/Batman) and drawn by Mahmud Asrar (Adventure Comics). What's the history?
Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El was first introduced in 1959's Action Comics #252 by Otto Binder and Curt Swan. The teenage survivor of the Kryptonian Argo City arrived on Earth years after Clark Kent and adopted the secret identity of 'Linda Lee'. The character proved very popular upon her introduction, but by the continuity-changing Crisis on Infinite Earths it was decided that Superman needed to live as a lone Kryptonian on Earth again. This led to Kara's famous death at the hands of the Anti-Monitor. Various (more)...

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
Sometimes, an alien teen has to learn to make his way on Earth. Other times, they have very human problems while still on their home planet. Whether he wants to just fit in or she wants to see the world, alien teens are just like the terrestrial variety. This weekend’s I Am Number Four tries to show us, once again, just how hard it can be to be an alien teen. You have to get good grades in school and run away from a killer trying to track you down. Below are some of my favorites.
7. Lem from Planet 51 (2009)
Recap: Lem (voiced by Justin Long) is just a geeky alien teen trying to get noticed by the girl next door, Neera (voiced by Jessica Biel).Until the day that a strange alien from Earth (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) lands in...

She was still in her teens when she flew to Britain for a year to become Supergirl in the film of the same name. And she spared us some time to talk about becoming the girl of steel…
Supergirl is a film that, as we found when we mentioned it on our Twitter feed (twitter.com/denofgeek), many of you have fond memories of. And rewatching it in advance of talking to its star, Helen Slater, I found it hard to disagree. It's no classic, granted, but it's a fun, fascinating movie, the ilk of which would never be made now.
So, one Thursday afternoon, we rang its star, Helen Slater, and she happily talked us through the production, and what happened since...
Reading into your background, the impression I get is that it was music that was your first passion. Is that right?
Well, I would say yes, but...

In the upcoming Smallville episode aptly titled “Supergirl”, Kara Zor-El (Laura Vandervoort) will suit up as her superhero alter ego. This very well may foreshadow what’s to come for Clark (Tom Welling) as the CW series comes to a close in this tenth and final season of the show.
Executive producer Kelly Souders lays it out on Kara’s storyline:
“You really see her as Supergirl. Not the whole outfit, but her wardrobe will have evolved even a little more than Clark’s. She’s less Kara and way more Supergirl.”
Vandervoort talks about Clark’s cousin’s return after two years of being Mia:
“Kara returns in a very heroic way. When I found out this could be my last episode, I thought it would be great to see a quick glimpse of her in the uniform before she takes off.”
And she means “takes off” literally. Kara...

With all the superhero teases we've been through on Smallville, many fans have lost hope that we'd ever see Tom Welling take to the skies in a snazzy red and blue number, outside of a blurry dream sequence anyway. And while gallavanting around Metropolis in a black trenchcoat represents a step closer to that dream, we'll continue to wonder as season ten approaches if Dr. Fate's vision of "a silver age of heroism" will ever come to fruition.
But even if the Man of Steel never truly shows his colors, we can at least look forward to a little Supergirl!
That's right, in addition to the news that Laura Vandervoort, currently seen as "Lisa" on ABC's V, would reprise her role as Kara Zor-El for the tenth season, we've learned via interview with Vandervoort and executive producer Kelly Soulders a few more details about the Woman of Steel's return.
