When Endemol Shine Australia’s Mark Fennessy and Imogen Banks started developing a drama inspired by the Royal Flying Doctors Service two years ago, neither could have imagined how much more topical and relevant the subject would become.
Based on the true-life heroics of the service’s doctors, nurses, pilots and support staff, the eight-part Seven Network drama Rfds (working title) started shooting in Broken Hill today with Jennifer Leacey as the set-up director. Leacey is directing four episodes and Jeremy Sims and Adrian Russell Wills are each helming two.

If you’re writing something spooky, scary or chilling, Stephen King’s approval means a lot. The King of Horror has been publishing stories since the sixties and is responsible for some of the most terrifying tales of the modern era. Now, he’s chimed in on Netflix’s Reckoning, a show about the hunt for a serial killer who’s emerged from hibernation.
Writing on his Twitter account, King said the series was:
“A pretty good 10-episode limited series. Fine mystery plot generates bursts of maximum suspense. As a bonus, it’s a master class in how not to parent.”
Directed by Shawn Seet, Jennifer Leacey and Peter Andrikidis, Reckoning was first released in New Zealand in 2019 and premiered on domestic Netflix on May 1st. Since then, it hasn’t exactly set the world on fire, receiving little attention from critics or the public. There are a measly two reviews on Rotten Tomatoes,...

George MacKay in ‘True History of the Kelly Gang.’
Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang will open in Australian cinemas on January 9, just 18 days before its Australia Day premiere on Stan.
The short window and limited theatrical release were virtually inevitable after Stan announced the bushranger epic starring George MacKay, Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult and Essie Davis would premiere in summer as a Stan Original.
The major chains are determined to protect the traditional 90 day window and will not screen the film so distributor Transmission Films this week will start booking the title at the independent cinemas that are screening the Netflix productions The King, The Irishman, Marriage Story and The Two Popes and Amazon Studios’ The Report and Brittany Runs a Marathon.

The screen industry needs to stop cutting writers’ fees and to do a lot better in providing career paths for writers, according to Guesswork Television MD Kevin Whyte.
Chiming with the concerns of the Australian Writers’ Guild and Cjz executives Nick Murray and Matt Campbell, Whyte tells If: “Working out how we can make Australia an attractive and lucrative place to be a television writer, which means we put stories and ideas first and foremost, is critically important.
“The struggling artist cliché is wearing a bit thin. The industry should focus on creating career paths, not just so people stay but to entice people in into the industry.

“Our big focus is working with tomorrow’s talent, the wonderful emerging writers and creators who hopefully will be the next generation.”
Gibson adds: “It’s very much a two-pronged strategy of finding prestige projects and international opportunities with our increasingly sought after partners like Andrew Knight and Tony McNamara, and also working with rising stars and the next generation.

Claudia Karvan in 'Newton's Law'..
How did you get involved in Newton.s Law?.
I think they originally wrote it for Miriam Margolyes. She was originally devised as an old, fat Jewish woman (laughs). I've never worked with them before so I don't know how I came on their radar. I was a big admirer of the film Mallboy.that Fiona [Eagger] produced a long time ago. It's one of my favourite Australian films. It really packs a punch..
I've never heard of it.
It's really worth checking out. I loved it. And then, obviously, [I.m] a big fan of SeaChange and totally appreciate the extraordinary phenomena that is Miss Fisher, and what successful producers they are. They just approached me, I read it, we had a few conversations and then it was all happening. I really wanted to play a character who was emotionally intelligent and had authority and...

Neil Triffett on the set of 'Newton's Law'.
Emo the Musical director Neil Triffett spent the tail-end of 2016 as an attachment on TV series Newton.s Law, starring Claudia Karvan and produced by Miss Fisher.s Deb Cox and Fiona Eagger..
Triffett.s placement was organised through Film Vic.s attachment scheme.
.He.s had a smorgasbord,. says Eagger, talking to If mid-shoot last year. .He sat in a lot of meetings. Because he's around for the whole shoot and he's been doing some behind the scenes for us, he's sort of become part of the furniture and as a consequence I think got great access..
.The production pays for part of his wage, and he has days where he does behind the scenes and days where he's purely a director's attachment. He also gets the opportunity to direct — he's just shot a scene for us...
