Requiem for a Dream is a movie directed by Darren Aronofsky featuring Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, Ellen Burstyn and Marlon Wayans. Based on the novel by Hubert Selby Jr.
A brutal movie, both because of the subject as well as the aesthetics, about the world of drugs.
This is a story about degradation which, led by the poetry of despair, has become (well deservedly) a cult movie.
Movie Review
This is a movie with a brutal potential for aesthetics: it moves and perverts and degrades and attracts, all in the whirlpool of emotions the characters experience who are submerged in the world of drugs. A misleading “hand camera” film that takes us through the stories of four characters in their four personal hells and the Requiem they all entone together with a social and systemic point of view, because the réquiem is also pertinent socially.
However, what we are interested...

Armageddon Time is a movie written and directed by James Gray, starring Michael Banks Repeta, Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong and Anthony Hopkins.
A well presented story, perfectly coordinated, balanced and magnificently interpreted. So tender yet bitter, which Gray has rendered onto film with the perfectly measured amount of drama.
Premise
Set in Queens, New York in the early 1980’s, it tells the story of Paul, a boy with a Jewish background who befriends his rebellious classmate Johnny, a Black American. Their friendship is not welcome by Paul’s family, and he has to face the truth of inequality and prejudice.
Armageddon Time (2022) Movie Review
A wonderfully sober feature for film critics, yet rather slow and melancholy for the audience at large. So, we should probably side with both, thinking that it is not James Gray’s pretension to make a movie that will become a mass phenomenon with this number,...

Ivan Passer’s first American film and his first in the English language is a core life-with-a-junkie tale in a cold Manhattan winter. George Segal is the ‘habituated, not addicted’ (he says) user whose married life has already been destroyed. Can he escape with the help of his new girlfriend? Hector Elizondo’s pimp/pusher has no intention of letting that happen. What’s weird is Passer’s frequently light tone — Segal’s criminal antics verge on the absurd. It’s a great film to see Karen Black, a young Robert De Niro and even Paula Prentiss in action, and yet another snapshot of Times Square in its most degraded decade.

Step aside, toddlers. It's the grown-ups' turn to wear the tiara, now.
In the trailer for "Ass Backwards," Casey Wilson and June Diane Raphael play aged-up former pageant girls Kate and Chloe, women who fancy themselves Carrie Bradshaw-style New York go-getters but are, in reality, egg donors who are being judged hard by Alicia Silverstone (hi, Alicia! Loved you in "Clueless"!).
When an invitation to return to the pageant they competed in as little girls comes, the two have a chance to reclaim their former glory. Er, glory may not be the greatest word for it, as Silverstone's character points out; they came in dead last even as kids. Always something to be said for second chances!
EW.com premiered the poster, featuring Wilson and Raphael in their full glitzed-out glory, yesterday, along with comments from the stars.

Veteran actors Dan Butler, David Garrison, Julie Halston, Marcia Jean Kurtz, and Richard Masur say it's rare to find themselves in a play exploring the lives of mature people grappling with the sometimes thorny, occasionally comic issues of aging. They feel lucky to be in Charles Busch's "Olive and the Bitter Herbs," a comedy set in New York City that details the evolving relationships among embittered Jewish actor Olive (Kurtz), her slightly demented caregiving friend Wendy (Halston), two bickering gay neighbors (Butler and Garrison), and the twice widowed Sylvan (Richard Masur). Throw into the brew a ghost and a "six degrees of separation" theme. Busch is perhaps best known for his play "The Tale of the Allergist's Wife," which was nominated for a 2001 Tony Award for best play. "Olive and the Bitter Herbs" is a Primary Stages production running Off-Broadway.Seated on its set—a cozy living room in a prewar,...

Black Swan is the fifth feature to come from the lunatic vision of Darren Aronofsky and with his first Oscar nomination pending, let's look back on his career. While Natalie Portman is front and center for the entire hit movie and Mickey Rourke had a similarly feature-length closeup in The Wrestler, Aronofsky is the star of all five pictures. If not, he has to be considered the co-lead. He's not invisible as a director is the point even though he's not onscreen. But which faces has he used the most to sell his masterpieces and/or follies (depending on your point of view)?

When I spotted Casey Wilson at last night's ABC mixer, I thought "lesbian commune." I remembered that the ex-SNL comedian had put out a casting call last August in Albany, New York for her upcoming film, Ass Backwards, specifically hoping for a bunch of lesbians, or women to play lesbians. So I had to ask what it was all about.
"It's a female road trip comedy. R-rated," Casey said. "My friend (co-writer/co-star June Diane Raphael) and I, we go on a road trip — these two really misguided girls — and they're completely broke but they are dressed like they have a million dollars. And they end up broken down in the middle of nowhere and then this amazing biker picks them up." The biker is played by Sandy Martin (Big Love, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia).
"They think it's a man," Casey said, "but then they still are attracted to her.

Robert Siegel could have made a documentary using me for Big Fan. I suspect it would have been cheaper to follow me around for an entire football season and watch me dedicate my entire life to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Much like Patton Oswalt’s Paul, I spend my entire week thinking about the next game with the excitement of a win, or the disappointment of a loss racking my mind all week. In addition, my Terrible Towel follows me everywhere, every day of the season and that includes non-game days. Safely, not safety, I can say I got a nice kick out of Siegel’s film as he crafts what it’s like to be a die-hard fan of a sports team. From one fan to another, he hit the nail right on the head.
Before the meat of the story is discussed, the focus will be on how Siegel crafted this story.

Yeah, sports is big business. But somehow, between just two movies, Robert Siegel has made a film career out of examining the little man of the industry. Yeah, this is the guy who gave Mickey Rourke his career back, the guy who wrote last year's "The Wrestler." Now he's back, directing his own screenplay, "Big Fan." Patton Oswalt, best known for being an angry, young-looking man and for voicing the foodie rat in "Ratatouille," is New York Giants fan Paul Aufiero (Patton Oswalt). Paul is 35, lives with his mother (Marcia Jean Kurtz), and works as a parking lot attendant. No, it's not a glam life, but Paul has one thing going for him—he's a nightly superstar on a call-in sports show. Yes, Paul spends his time in the little box writing his rants, and his day's high point comes late at night, when he defends his Giants and his favorite player,...

Before Robert Siegel wrote The Wrestler for Darren Aronofsky, he wrote a screenplay called Big Fan about a Staten Island parking-lot attendant who spends his nights and weekends obsessing over the New York Giants and their star linebacker. And before that, Siegel edited satirical newspaper The Onion, which may explain why both of his dramatic screenplays are built on deep currents of absurdity—it’s in his blood.

Big Fan Written and Directed by: Robert Siegel Starring: Patton Oswalt, Kevin Corrigan, Michael Rapaport, Marcia Jean Kurtz, Jonathan Hamm When Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler started to gain a lot of attention last year, people were pretty shocked to find out that the man who came up with the story and the screenplay was none other than Robert Siegel, former editor of the satirical newspaper and website, The Onion. How someone could go from peddling fake news to weaving such a dark, heartbreaking tale of redemption is beyond me, but if nothing else, Siegel certainly proved his versatility as a writer. Then he decided to take it a step further, and find out if he could not only write a script, but also direct it as well. Following on the success of The Wrestler, Siegel managed to pull together a fairly low budget independent production for his directorial debut,...

First Independent Pictures has supplied us with an exclusive clip from Big Fan, the feature directorial debut of Robert Siegel, screenwriter of Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler and former editor of The Onion. You probably know the film better as the Patton Oswalt obsessed football fan movie. As I have warned previously, this film is not a comedy, but instead a character study. If you know that going in, you'll be a lot better off. Watch the clip after the jump. The clip below needs a little bit of set-up, which you can get from reading the official plot synopsis below: Paul Aufiero (Patton Oswalt), a 35-year-old parking garage attendant from Staten Island, is the self-described "world's biggest New York Giants fan." He lives at home with his mother (Marcia Jean Kurtz), spending his off hours calling in to local sports-radio station 760 The Zone, where he rants in support of...

“Big Fan” is like “The Wrestler”, only it’s about football and Patton Oswalt isn’t Mickey Rourke. Other than that, they should probably have called this movie “The Wrestler 2: The Football Fan Guy”, because it has the exact same tone and vibe as that other film, which writer/director Robert D. Siegel also wrote. With “Big Fan”, Siegel is making his directorial debut, and oh boy is it a doozy. This movie will either depress the hell out of you or make you glad you kinda like football, but not that much. But hey, there is a bright side to all this: if it had been Plaxico Burrows, Oswalt’s character might have gotten shot instead of just beaten up. Paul Aufiero, a hardcore New York Giants football fan, struggles to deal with the consequences when he is beaten up by his favorite player. Starring Patton Oswalt, Kevin Corrigan,...

- If you are wondering what are the kinds of films that come out of this particular section - look no further then in current headline grabber examples such as with Ballast and Frozen River. So there is always reason to be excited about the announcement of this section. As expected the debuts from Sophie Barthes, John Hindman and Cruz Angeles will be the make up of 16 film selection (read my predictions here). I'm already familiar with at least half of the projects as with John Krasinski’s debut and Adam Salky’s feature length film project but of course, the rest were completely off my radar. Among the projects we covered here are Lee Daniels’ latest Push (not the Summit film) which includes Lenny Kravitz’ screen debut (which means we can expect him to pick up a guitar for one of them parties). Well meaning but all too obvious in its message, Arranged depicts the burgeoning friendship between two women -- one Orthodox Jewish and the other Muslim -- with all the depth and sophistication of an Afterschool Special. The film, written by Stefan Schaefer and co-directed by him and Diane Crespo, is essentially preaching to the choir. It is playing an exclusive theatrical engagement at New York's Quad Cinema.
Rochel Zoe Lister Jones) and Nasira (Francis Benhamou) are beginning teachers at a public school in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn. Rochel's ultra-conservative clothing and Nasira's headscarf make them stand out at work, with even their principal Marcia Jean Kurtz), a secular Jew, urging them to adopt more modernistic ways.
Both women become caught up in their families' traditional efforts to see them married off. A matchmaker arranges a series of increasingly dire dates for Rochel, while Nasira's father imports a singularly appropriate relative from their home country.
The similarity of their predicaments helps bring the women together, with their growing bond becoming the cause of curiosity among the students and deep concern within their families. Ultimately, true friendship wins out, with the pair overcoming the prejudices of their community and even finding true love with suitable men along the way.
The beautiful lead actresses are appealing, even if their characters never prove particularly interesting. Less effective are the performances by several of the supporting players, who ultimately are unable to overcome the stereotypical aspects of their broadly written roles.

Belladonna Prods.
NEW YORK -- A tired sci-fi spoof that fails to deliver on its promise of satirical comedy, this feature debut from Barry Strugatz (screenwriter of "Married to the Mob" and "She-Devil") is mainly notable for its authentic Brooklyn locations. Starring Cara Buono as a bored housewife who suspects that she's come into a close encounter with aliens, "From Other Worlds" squanders the cleverness of its concept with a lackluster execution. The film is currently being shown at New York's Cinema Village.
After Joanne imagines that she's been abducted by aliens thanks to some mysterious visions and a strange mark on her body, she attends a support group for fellow U.F.O. fanatics. There she meets Abraham (Isaach De Bankole), an African immigrant who has the same mark. Bonding together, they find themselves attempting to save the world after sharing an encounter with a helpful alien who instructs them to steal an apparently highly destructive Egyptian scroll from the Brooklyn Museum. Meanwhile, Joanne's aggrieved husband (David Lansbury) becomes increasingly suspicious that she's having an affair.
Strugatz's script has a few clever moments poking fun at the alien contact subculture, but is ultimately undone by its lack of subtlety and degeneration into broad sci-fi comedy. Not helping matters are the amateurish direction and the charmless performances, with even such normally reliable supporting players as Melissa Leo and Marcia Jean Kurtz floundering in their overly broad characterizations.
