In the next five weeks, two of Edward Norton’s new films, Leaves of Grass and Stone, go straight to DVD in the U.K., following an incredibly restricted theatrical run and a massive box office underperformance in the U.S. respectively. While this certainly is not a good sign for any actor’s career, Leaves of Grass, which demands of Norton an impressive act of duality, certainly deserves better than a meager DVD treatment, especially with all the inferior tosh getting theatrical releases these days…
Celebrated Ivy League philosophy professor Bill Kincaid (Norton) receives a startling phone call one day, informing him that his twin brother Brady (also Norton, natch) has been killed. Returning to his backward hometown in Oklahoma, he finds his sibling – a slow-talkin’, long-haired redneck version of himself – to be alive and well, and Brady has in fact lured Bill home in order to get his...

This is the last of my lists of the best films of 2010, and the hardest to name. Call it the Best Art Films. I can't precisely define an Art Film, but I knew I was seeing one when I saw these. I could also call them Adult Films, if that term hadn't been devalued by the porn industry. These are films based on the close observation of behavior. They are not mechanical constructions of infinitesimal thrills. They depend on intelligence and empathy to be appreciated.
They also require acting of a precision not necessary in many mass entertainments. They require directors with a clear idea of complex purposes. They require subtleties of lighting and sound that create a self-contained world. Most of all, they require sympathy. The directors care for their characters, and ask us to see them as individuals, not genre emblems. That requires us to see ourselves as individual viewers,...

Chicago – As special effects technology continues to become more advanced, filmmakers have found increasingly convincing ways of allowing actors to give dual performances in the same movie, and often in the same frame. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, from the exquisite trick photography in “Moon” to the seamless digital creation of the Winklevi in “The Social Network.”
Yet as flawless as the technology may be, the success of the performance still hinges on the level of authentic chemistry an actor can generate between two interacting personas. Nicholas Cage pulled off this feat brilliantly in “Adaptation,” and now Edward Norton rises to the challenge in Tim Blake Nelson’s “Leaves of Grass,” a weirdly uneven mixture of “Adaptation” and “Pineapple Express.” Like Cage, Norton is given the task of playing identical twins whose personalities couldn’t be more different. It’s a splendid showcase role, enabling Norton...

Leaves of Grass
Edward Norton is an actor with such a serious reputation that even watching a popcorn film like The Incredible Hulk is a recipe for a headache. So it’s a lot of fun to see the chin-stroking actor let go in this loopy pot comedy-drama. He plays both Bill Kincaid–a straight-edge philosophy professor hoping to put his Oklahoma “Little Dixie” past behind him–and his twin Brady, a man who might be called the Einstein of the hydroponics. Bill reluctantly returns to the old homestead after learning that his pot-dealing bro has been killed by a crossbow bolt. That’s just the beginning of a tricky and just a little goofy progression of double-crosses. The sibling rivalry/identical twin plot devices are even older than Cheech & Chong, but as well as Norton’s star turn, Grass offers...

Tim Blake Nelson is one hell of a playwright, but he's had less than success with his filmmaking career. His only notable feature being the Othello modernization, O, with Julia Stiles and Josh Harnett. Yet, he's done well with Leaves of Grass, which feels almost like a throwback to the old drawing-room comedies of Sheridan or Coward. Except people smoke a lot of weed and say "fuck" a lot. The synopsis is a fair assessment of the project: an Ivy League professor is tricked back to his small Oklahoma hometown by his pot-growing twin brother, who's concocted a scheme to take down a local drug kingpin. It goes even broader and zanier than that, incorporating an English teaching poet who's a champion noodler, a rogue orthodontist, and the Jewish mafia of Tulsa. And therein lies my major problem with the film. It starts off as kind of a comedy of errors,...

I mentioned recently how much I enjoyed the History of Film class I'd taken at Texas A&M, but what I didn't share was how much I disliked much of the required Liberal Arts curriculum. I found philosophy and classic literature to be dry, boring and uninspiring. However, if I'd had Tim Blake Nelson as a classics professor perhaps I would think differently now and my life would have taken an alternate path. As writer and director of Leaves of Grass, Nelson introduces themes of classic literature in a very modern and engaging manner. Leaves of Grass is not a typical stoner comedy, as it switches to more of a drama and thriller about halfway through the film.

Director: Tim Blake Nelson Writer: Tim Blake Nelson Starring: Edward Norton, Richard Dreyfuss, Susan Sarandon, Melanie Lynskey, Keri Russell, Tim Blake Nelson Bill Kincaid (Edward Norton) escaped Little Dixie, Oklahoma several years ago and has never looked back. Having completely shed the accent of his roots, Bill currently resides in Providence, Rhode Island where he is a published author and Classics professor at Brown University (Harvard is primed to offer him a chance to open his own law and philosophy hybrid department). Leaves of Grass opens as Bill lectures to his class on the Socratic ideals of self-discipline and control (and the dangerous illusion of thinking you have succeeded in abiding by this philosophy). This scene is not merely to show the audience that Bill is a professor, but to establish the philosophical tone. (Later, a young female student throws herself at Bill – his self-restraint would make Socrates proud.) Meanwhile,...

For many years, moviegoers knew Tim Blake Nelson as the comedic character actor who would show up in movies like the Coens' O Brother, Where Art Thou? or Miguel Arteta's The Good Girl , usually playing the dumb guy. At the same time, Nelson was establishing himself as a fairly intelligent filmmaker with dramatic fare like O and The Grey Zone . Now, Nelson is back with his new movie Leaves of Grass , a movie closer in tone to some of the comedies he's appeared in and teaming him with actor Edward Norton in a rare dual role. Norton plays Northeastern college professor Bill Kincaid who learns his drug-dealing twin brother Brady, also played by Norton, has been shot in a deal gone wrong back in his former home of Oklahoma. Bill travels home only to discover not only is Brady...

"Leaves of Grass" tells the story of Bill Kincaid (played by Edward Norton), an Ivy League professor who returns to Oklahoma after receiving news that his estranged twin brother, Brady (also played by Edward Norton), has been murdered. It turns out the pot-growing sibling is actually still alive and soon both siblings become embroiled in a plot to take down a local drug lord.
I got a chance to talk with Norton and director Tim Blake Nelson (who also appears in the film) about the autobiographical nature of the story, and about how it explores the conflicting forces in each of us.

This beautiful Greek revival of a comedy vs. tragedy burned so heavily it was intoxicating.
When writing the film Leaves of Grass, director Tim Blake Nelson could only imagine one actor being such a dynamic presence while portraying a duo of caricatures actually written for the seasoned embodiment that is Edward Norton. The two-time Academy Award nominee (for Primal Fear and American History X) inhabits the role of the brothers Kincaid. Norton, with poignancy and flexibility, seemingly melted into each character. When first gracing the screen as Bill, the audience sees an accomplished man professing some memorable words to his adoring pupils. His entire goal in life is to achieve and succeed. Raised in a small town in Oklahoma all he needed was to fuel his escape for a better life, until he is tricked many years later into returning for the funeral of his identical twin brother. Even though...

If last year's Moon taught us anything (other than the fact that studios become quite stupid around Oscar season), it was that getting the same actor twice for the price of one is awesome, particularly if the roles are polar opposites that allow said actor to show their range in one two hour sitting. Hence Leaves of Grass sounds fantastic. Fandango has posted a new clip from the film that features the first interaction between Bill Kincaid (Edward Norton as Ivy League professor) and Brady Kincaid (Edward Norton as pot dealing hillbilly). While the actor doesn't have a great history in the comedy genre (avoid Death To Smoochy and Keeping the Faith), he has a great cast backing him up here (Susan Sarandon, Tim Blake Nelson, and Richard Dryfuss), and like they say with athletes in a slump, he's due. Head on over to Fandango to see the clip.

“Leaves of Grass” is both written and directed by Tim Blake Nelson (Eye of God, Othello, The Grey Zone). The film was produced independently by Nelson and Norton and first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival 2009. An unrated promotional trailer for Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass has made its way online. Well, it's kind of funny. Mostly, Tim Blake Nelson's upcoming crime comedy "Leaves of Grass" looks incredibly silly, but in an amusing way. A new red band trailer for the film is now online.

But soon after he arrives, he discovers that the brother he believes has been murdered has actually lured him home to involve him in a doomed plot against a local drug lord (Richard Dreyfuss).

Those savvy among you will have noted the key word in the description is "identical" - yes that's right, Norton will be putting his acting skills to full use by playing dual roles, starring as both brothers. Cue lots of split scenes and classic comedy set-ups.
The film is written and directed by Tim Blake Nelson, who you...

Edward Norton's new comic thriller, Leaves Of Grass, sees the actor taking a leaf out of Nicholas Cage's book and play twin-brothers-at-loggerheads, one an academic, the other a pothead with a molasses-thick Southern accent. The film played well at the Toronto Film Festival - Roger Ebert hailed it as the best to premiere there - and the new teaser trailer gives us the dope. Not to be confused with the Walt Whitman anthology, Leaves Of Grass brings together Harvard philosophy Bill Kincaid (Norton) with his slacker twin brother, Brady (ditto), a small-time Oklahoma drug dealer who lures him into his narcotic scheming by faking his death. From there, things get interesting as Bill tries to extricate from a situation that involves more than its fair share of psychotic rednecks, and the intriguing prospect of Richard Dreyfuss as a drugs baron.Leaves Of Grass also co-stars Susan Sarandon as the Kincaid's sharp-as-a-tack mom,...

We were beginning to wonder if Leaves of Grass, a pot comedy thriller starring Edward Norton in the role(s) of identical twins, had hit a buzz or release snag. Or worse: try to recall the actor's Pride and Glory from last year. But judging by this new, rapid-clip trailer, complete with Norton pronouncing "crystal meth" in a thick country accent, Leaves might have yielded a nice return on a visual gag so infamously exploited by Van Damme actioners. Add in wretched black light posters, scenes with Susan Sarandon as the twins' knowing mom, and Richard Dreyfuss channeling Nic Cage's iguana rage, and it's worth a laugh. Here is the official plot synopsis, which we posted last summer. At first I was inclined to add a spoiler warning, but nothing is revealed herein that is not evident in the trailer: "Edward Norton is Bill Kincaid, an Ivy League classics professor,...

Plot: Bill Kincaid (Edward Norton), an Ivy League professor, is lured back to his Oklahoma roots by his identical twin brother, Brady (Norton, sporting a mullet and some stubble) a small time pot dealer, in trouble with a local drug lord (Richard Dreyfuss). Review: I was expecting big things from Leaves Of Grass, as I'm a huge fan of Edward Norton's, and I know this has been a pet project of his for awhile. I've always thought he was one of the best actors to emerge in the nineties, and...

It was my last film of the festival, on the morning of the day I was flying home, and it turns out to have been my favorite one. Tim Blake Nelson's "Leaves of Grass" is some kind of sweet, wacky masterpiece. It takes all sorts of risks, including a dual role with Edward Norton playing twin brothers, and it pulls them off. It is certainly the most intelligent, philosophical and poetic film I can imagine that involves five murders in the marijuana-dealing community of Oklahoma and includes John Prine singing "Illegal Smile."

Sometimes you cannot believe your luck as a movie unfolds. There is a mind behind it, joyful invention, obvious ambition. As is often the case, I had studiously avoiding reading anything at all about "Leaves of Grass" before going to see the movie, although I rather doubted it would be about Walt Whitman. What...

Edward Norton struggled with an identity crisis in Hulk earlier this year, and for his next movie he'll have to deal with an evil twin. He's just finished shooting Leaves of Grass in Louisiana. In it, he plays both a college professor named Bill Kincaid... and Bill Kincaid's hedonistic, pot-smoking, career criminal twin brother. The film, directed by Tim Blake Nelson, co-stars Nelson, Richard Dreyfuss, Keri Russell, and Susan Sarandon. It follows Kincaid as he's lured away from his Ivy League world back home to the backwoods of Southeastern Oklahoma by his bad boy brother. There, he "finds that Plato and Marcus Aurelius have ill-prepared him for dealing with a gang of homicidal yokels." We've got the first picture from the film for you below. That's Edward Norton on the right facing off against evil Edward Norton on the left. You know he's evil, because he has a beard.

Above: First poster for Leaves of Grass (click to enlarge), which begins shooting on September 22.
Tim Blake Nelson and Edward Norton were on-hand in Toronto on Sunday to discuss their upcoming film, Leaves of Grass. Nelson wrote the script and will act in and direct the film, while Norton will play the dual lead roles of identical twin brothers.
Here's what we were told of the storyline: Bill Kincaid is a buttoned-up Ivy League philosophy professor; his pot-growing twin brother lures him back to his hometown in rural Oklahoma for an ill-conceived deal to bilk a local drug-lord (Richard Dreyfuss), described by Nelson as being like "a Jewish T. Boone Pickens in the Tulsa Jewish community". Bill gets entangled in his brother's schemes and implicated in a murder, and his ordered philosophical life starts to fall apart. Also starring in the film are Susan Sarandon as Bill's estranged mother and...
