Fox Post Production Services and Formosa Group – the sound house that has worked on projects such as “Dune,” “Cruella,” “Scream” and “Mare of Easttown” – have entered a strategic alliance designed to broaden Fox creative talent available to producers, enhance the studio’s sound facilities and expand business for both companies.
The pact will give Formosa Group a presence in the original Film Editorial building on the Fox lot in Century City, where Fox Post Production Services already boasts four feature mixing stages, two Adr stages, the famous Newman Scoring Stage, a Foley stage and several editing rooms. The unit was established in the 1930s as Fox Sound.

On Sunday, Courtney B. Vance accepted his guest actor Emmy Award for Lovecraft Country, and took the opportunity to pay touching tribute to his recently passed co-star Michael K. Williams.

Lovecraft Country claimed its first Emmy for Sound Editing on Saturday, leading Sound Supervisor Tim Kimmel to honor cast member Michael K. Williams during the Creative Arts ceremony at L.A. Live.
“As the one who did get to work [directly] with him, I was very sad to hear of his passing. He was such a great part of the show, and many other shows as well,” Kimmel said backstage. “[He was] a great person to work with, really a professional of his craft, so I was really sad to hear of his passing.”
Williams died at his Brooklyn home on Monday at the age of 54. A cause of death was not disclosed.

It’s checkmate on the first of three 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards shows, and Saturday was a huge evening for “The Queen’s Gambit.” The excellent Netflix limited series led by Anya Taylor-Joy has already won seven 2021 Emmys, technically (and in mostly technical categories).

The 71st Emmy Awards kicked off Saturday and Sunday with the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles. As a cascade of Emmys were handed out in technical and acting categories, and there were plenty of expected wins and some surprises.

The powerful sounds of destruction and survival were integral to both HBO drama series “Game of Thrones” and Netflix docu-series “Our Planet.” Whether it was the epic warfare involving Dany’s three dragons or the insurmountable army of the undead (the Wights and White Walkers), “Game of Thrones” upped its Emmy-winning soundscape for “The Battle of Winterfell” from Episode 3’s “The Long Night.”
Meanwhile, Netflix’s docuseries leveraged the impact of climate change and the immersive strength of Dolby Atmos to deliver a wide range of dynamic sounds, including seabirds carpet-bombing the ocean, a scared baby flamingo getting left behind, and the massive ice carving of a melting glacier in Greenland for Episode 1’s “One Planet.”

“It’s really such a multi-layered piece sonically,” reveals “Game of Thrones” sound designer Paula Fairfield about the episode “The Spoils of War,” for which she’s nominated for an Emmy for Best Sound Editing (One-Hour Series). “Everybody’s role on it is so crucial,” she adds, and “the final soup is delicious.” Fairfield, who joined “Thrones” in its third season, is Emmy-nominated for the fifth time for the show and for the ninth time overall. It was a clear victory for sci-fi sound editing Sunday night at the 65th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards at the Westin Bonaventure. “War for the Planet of the Apes” was the surprise winner for Dialogue/Adr, splitting honors with “Blade Runner 2049,” which grabbed the Effects/Foley prize. The big loser was “Dunkirk” (which won the BAFTA sound award earlier Sunday). However, Christopher Nolan’s World War II survival epic took home the Music Score award and remains the sound editing Oscar favorite.

With one week before the Academy Awards, "Birdman" continues its triumphant march towards Oscar glory. Just this past weekend, the Alejandro González Iñárritu contender won the top awards at the American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) awards, the 62nd Sound Editors' Golden Reel, and the 51st Cinema Audio Society. Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.
