Director Fred Dekker’s 1987 cult classic monster mash The Monster Squad (watch it Here) features variations of the classic Universal Monsters characters Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, and the Gillman, but it wasn’t actually a Universal production. So to avoid getting in trouble with Universal, the movie’s effects crew at the Stan Winston Studio had to create their own specific designs of the creatures… but that didn’t stop them from sneaking homages to the original monsters in there. It has been known for a while now that designers Steve Wang and Matt Rose hid the face of the original Creature from the Black Lagoon somewhere on the neck of their Gillman suit. Now – as pointed out by Monster Squad super-fan Shawn Robare of Plastic Rocket Pop – the exact location of that face has been found!

With a love of cinema woven into its DNA, The Monster Squad helped indoctrinate ’80s kids to the classic monsters. The generation that grew up watching it on home video and HBO look back on the 1987 film with the same reverence director Fred Dekker had for the Universal monster movies, and now they’re passing it down in a similar fashion. There’s no better way to introduce the next generation than with the new 4K edition.
Conceived as “The Little Rascals meets the Universal Monsters,” the cleverly-plotted film clocks in at a tight 82 minutes. The punchy script by Dekker and Shane Black doesn’t have an ounce of fat on it, save for the casual homophobia, misogyny, and body shaming of the time. Drawing inspiration from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, human characters offer well-placed levity and a bevy of memorable one-liners, but the monsters are played straight.

The film: When Isaac (John Franklin) returns with a group of other children from playing in the cornfields around the town of Gatlin, Nebraska, he leads a revolt that sees the adults slaughtered fast and mercilessly. The only two children who didn’t play in the corn that day, Job (Robby Kiger) and his sister Sarah (Anne Marie McEvoy) remain unhomicidal. Three years later, Vicky (Linda Hamilton) and boyfriend Burt (Peter Horton) are driving near Gatlin when a little boy stumbles in front of their car. He’s had his throat slit and in their quest to get help, the pair find themselves in the midst of Isaac’s not-so-merry band.

Malachai and Isaac. Those names always "crop" up anytime someone mentions Children of the Corn. But there was another character as equally essential to the story who's "live" footage so to say, was trimmed from the final theatrical version. Once having almost stopped the entity know only as He Who Walks Behind The Rows, Officer Hodgekiss, a.k.a. The Blue Man, met an untimely demise that was to serve as an example for anyone who defied the ruling of Isaac. But what exactly happened to The Blue Man? As it goes in editing, it seems that footage involving a revealing scene was cut but promotional stills were used for various advertising materials and media outlets. Recently, we had the opportunity to talk with Rich Kleinberg who played the very much alive version (for a while anyways) of the iconic blue figure to discuss train stations, body doubles and petitions.

As something of a monster-obsessed child growing up, I lapped up any kind of monster-related goodies I could get my hands on, whether it was things like Monster in my Pocket or monster-related movies or books, few things piqued my interest in the way that these little nasties could.
So, when I saw an ex-rental VHS copy of The Monster Squad offered up for sale at a local video store, I pestered my parents to buy it for me and soon discovered what would be one of my favourite and most watched movies as a child. It featured classic monsters and the protagonists were in the same age range as me. Sure, they would have been a little older and live on the other side of the Atlantic,...

Welcome to Where Everyone Has Gone Before, the column in which I continue my film education before your very eyes by seeking out and watching all of the movies we all know I should have seen by now. I will first judge the movie before I've watched it, based entirely on its reputation (and my potentially misguided thoughts). Then I will give the movie a fair chance and actually watch it. You will laugh at me, you may condemn me, but you will never say I didn't try! And we all know what Yoda said about trying.
The Film: 'The Monster Squad' (1987), Dir. Fred Dekker
Starring: Andre Gower, Robby Kiger, Stephen Macht, Duncan Regehr and Tom Noonan.
Why I Haven't Seen It Until Now: I've been burnt by 1980s movies far too many times. Nostalgia is a powerful beast, blinding even the most...

As they had a secret meeting in one of the old buildings to discuss the plan, Joseph (Jonas Marlowe) told Job and Sarah to mind Isaac until he came back or "You know what happens...". Joseph also made them promise not to tell anyone he was gone with "Cross your heart, Hope to die, Stick a needle in your eye.

In the original Children of the Corn, many actors were brought together to keep us terrified by children in a small Nebraska town and cornfield. One actor's name you may not recognize, but are sure to remember his performance, is Corey Frizzell. Corey played one of the children from Gatlin and was featured in several scenes. One thing you may not know is that Corey also was a stand-in double for the character of Job, played by Robby Kiger. Recently, we talked with Corey about Sioux City, being a part of the Frizzell country music legacy, and being trampled by Peter Horton. You can view the interview in it's entirety by clicking on Corey's picture to the right or by clicking here.

As he enters the Town Hall, Job follows him into the building. Contrary to what you might of thought, all of the scenes inside the fictional "Town Hall" featuring Job were not Robby Kiger.
