The late Richard Donner, director of Superman, made some of the most acclaimed and memorable films of the 70s and 80s. He was the go-to director for action blockbusters and entertaining cinema ranging from superhero films to buddy-cop comedies. He directed iconic films such as The Omen, The Goonies, The Lethal Weapon franchise, and Superman.

By all accounts, Christopher Reeve was one of the kindest and most giving men in the business, something that so many of his co-stars and friends gave back. For those lucky enough to work alongside him on screens both big and small – even just once – it will always be a special moment. This holds true even in far lesser fare, as Superman III co-star Annette O’Toole remembers just how giving Reeve was even off the set.
Speaking with MovieWeb, Annette O’Toole – who played Clark Kent’s childhood friend Lana Lang – remembered the time that Christopher Reeve took her to a Simon & Garfunkel concert at Wembley Stadium while she was still trying to get acclimated to the environment. “[They] just kind of introduced me to the world as being part of this huge movie. Up, Up, and Away! Truth, Justice, and The American Way. These immediately cause comic fans to conjure up one specific character, The Big Blue Boy Scout. Superman. Heralded as the one that started the superhero boom in comics way back in 1938, there have been a lot of live-action versions over the years. Last year’s Flash movie highlighted some of the more popular ones and even one that had never actually been put on film. With James Gunn taking over the Dcu and using a new Superman film as the starting line, what can we expect from the upcoming film?

Christopher Reeve’s Superman is most people’s definitive portrayal of the character. Richard Donner successfully balanced the superheroic aspects of the character along with the nerdy charm of his alter ego Clark Kent. The success of the first film led to Reeve returning for three sequels.
Christopher Reeve as Superman in 1978’s Superman
Donner’s Superman has been the benchmark that every other iteration of the character aims to achieve. However, Superman II did not see the return of Donner and many of his intended scenes did not feature in the theatrical film. An interesting but flawed deleted scene featuring Lois and Clark has fans relived that it did make it into the final cut.

Jan Haag, who a half-century ago founded the landmark Directing Workshop for Women at the American Film Institute, has died. She was 90.
The remarkable Haag, who also was an actress, painter, poet, novelist, playwright, writer of travel stories and creator of needlepoint canvases, some of which required hundreds of hours to complete, died Monday in Shoreline, Washington, according to the AFI and the Mb Abram agency.
Haag had directed dozens of educational films for the John Tracy Clinic and the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare when she became the first woman accepted into the Academy Intern Program at the AFI in 1970, three years after it was founded by George Stevens Jr.
She was assigned to Paramount’s Harold and Maude (1971), directed by Hal Ashby, then joined the AFI staff in 1971, and among her duties was to administer the nonprofit’s film grant program funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Kevin Feige is known for his significant role in shaping the MCU. As Marvel Studios’ President, he has been instrumental in its remarkable success since its launch in 2008 with ‘Iron Man.’
However, Feige’s favorite superhero movie, surprisingly, isn’t a Marvel character film. It’s about Dcu’s most notable and influential superhero of all time – Superman.
During the 2017 Oscar ceremony, Feige shared that before beginning any MCU production, he always re-watches ‘Superman,’ directed by Richard Donner and released in 1978, starring Christopher Reeve as the iconic Man of Steel.

Rachel Brosnahan spoke to Variety On the Carpet presented by Directv at the 2024 SAG Awards about gearing up to start filming James Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy,” in which she’s taking on the role of Lois Lane. The filmmaker posted the first cast photo last week after a table read of the script, and then Warner Bros. execs confirmed filming would officially begin next week.
“It was pretty amazing,” Brosnahan told Variety’s Angelique Jackson about the “Superman” table read. “Some of us met for the first time. Some of us got to see each other again. It was amazing to hear the script out loud. As with all of these films, there’s a lot of action sequences and things. So to hear the pacing of the film and to get to hear these characters occupied by the actors who play them is really fun. It’s also a great group.

“I’m still preparing,” Rachel Brosnahan said Saturday on the SAG Awards red carpet about her big role as Lois Lane in James Gunn’s DC movie Superman: Legacy.

In 2022, after a decade of trying to keep up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and largely failing, Warner Bros. and DC decided a drastic course correction was required. The first step was to wind down the so-called DC Extended Universe or Dceu, and bid its chief architect, Zack Snyder, adieu. But even the shuttering of this ill-fated cinematic project proved to be a bit of a mess.
At the start of 2023, Warner Bros. found itself in the unenviable position of having announced the end of the Dceu with four movies tied to that on-screen universe still to release. Meanwhile, James Gunn and producer Peter Safran took over as co-heads of the newly-dubbed DC Studios and announced the DC Universe — a totally different project to the Dceu that may or may not have a few of the old characters popping up from time to time.

You know what's really got me excited for "Superman: Legacy"? Aside from director James Gunn previously delivering the best movies that Marvel Studios has had to offer, Rachel Brosnahan is playing Lois Lane. Just as her soon-to-be co-star David Corenswet looks like Superman in the flesh, Brosnahan looks so much like how Lois is drawn: a gaze that sees through you and yet attracts your own, round and slender face with a strong chin, and brunette.
It's not all looks though, Brosnahan has got the talent and attitude to back it up. Check out her leading performance in the 2020 thriller "I'm Your Woman" as Jean, a housewife caught up in a crime. Jean is more naive than Lois, but they share a proper spine and a good heart. Brosnahan is best known, though, for awards darling series "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" — playing a snappy, mid-century New Yorker like Midge Maisel...

New month, new recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. The second installment of 2024 features selections reflecting holidays, events or traditions of February.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s horror offerings include reincarnation, vampires and more.
The Reincarnation of Peter Proud (1975)
Pictured: Michael Sarrazin and Jennifer O’Neill in The Reincarnation of Peter Proud.
Directed by J. Lee Thompson.
Author Max Ehrlich handled the screenplay for his own novel’s adaptation. Despite its quirky title, though, this movie is a rather surreal and sad, not to mention unpredictable viewing experience. The obsession with metaphysical matters seeped into ’70s cinema, and this trippy psycho-horror gem, one directed by J. Lee Thompson, is a valid reflection of that bygone trend.

Plot: A deep dive into the life of Christopher Reeve, from his overnight stardom as Superman through to his life after the tragic accident which left him a person with quadriplegia.
Review: When I heard Sundance would be showing a documentary about the life of Christopher Reeve, I correctly assumed that it wouldn’t leave a dry eye in this house whenever it was screened. Indeed, as the premiere screening wound up, the sobs from the audience were pronounced, and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is certainly a heartbreaking experience.
Directors Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui wisely adopt a non-linear style to tell Reeve’s story, opening with his accident, which came at a time when he was trying to rebuild his career following the disastrous end of the Superman franchise with Quest for Peace. Only a year before his devastating fall, he had a good role in Merchant...

Nonfiction filmmaking duo Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui turned heads with their dazzling 2018 fashion doc McQueen, which gracefully walked the line between celebration and sorrow, between the public highs of a brilliant creator of wearable art and the private lows of a man plagued by insurmountable demons. They achieve a comparable balance in their moving new film, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, between the iconic movie star and the man whose life was stalled by a tragic accident. The big difference is that unlike Alexander McQueen, Reeve did manage to overcome long days of darkness and despair, living a productive life for his remaining years.

Merry Creepmas, you filthy animals. The final day of Bloody Disgusting’s 12 Days of Creepmas is here, and it feels only fitting to celebrate with the reigning champion of holiday horror: Bob Clark’s Black Christmas.
In case you missed any of the holiday festivities, you can keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.
Released in 1974, Black Christmas has a simple setup on paper; over Christmas break, the residents of a sorority house are stalked and preyed upon by an unseen foe. Thanks to director Bob Clark and screenwriter Roy Moore, the plot isn’t quite so simple as it sounds thanks to a wonderfully complex cast of characters and character-driven moments that enhance the horror.
Scene-stealer Barb (Margot Kidder) is foul-mouthed and unapologetic, and her pranks or drunken quips ensure this sorority house is full of life. Barb is the precise type of handful that likely wears on housemother Mrs.

Christmas is coming and we’re painting the snow red on Screambox.
There are an absurd amount of presents under our tree, including the “Frankenstein”-inspired Santastein, the nasty Secret Santa hailing from the director of Jason Goes to Hell, and the awesomely creepy anthology Night of the Missing.
But we also have our fair share of holiday classics, including Rare Exports, Christmas Evil, Day of the Beast, Deep Red, and even Silent Night, Deadly Night 2.
However, the star at the top of the tree is Bob Clark‘s slasher masterpiece Black Christmas, which is now streaming on Screambox courtesy of Shout! Factory.

The weather has turned, all of your local stores will now be well stocked up with Christmas tat, and parents will be frantically searching for new and inventive naughty shenanigans for that fucking elf to get up to, and for kids to jump out of bed and probably forget they had a ‘magic’ elf that’s probably riding around on the pet cat. That’s right gore-hounds, Christmas is upon us, so you know what that means? Christmas carnage! Yes, there’s nothing we like more here in the haunted JoBlo dungeons than revisiting some classic festive bloodshed. This may be stating the obvious, but we love horror here at JoBlo towers, and it’s great to see that the genre is currently thriving, with not just the obligatory franchise stalwarts that rely upon jump scares doing well but also new and original movies such as Talk to Me and Ti Wests’ X follow-up Pearl. However, there’s also a trend that won’t go away, and will never go away, of course, for better or worse. Yeah, you know what we’re talking about gore-hounds, the remake. At the time of its 1978 release, "Superman" was one of the most expensive films ever made, boasting a $55 million budget. To tell the story of the famous Man of Steel — an out-of-this-world superhero of immense strength that stood for American values — director Richard Donner's film had to be larger-than-life. The colors were vivid, the airborne special effects were (at the time) groundbreaking, and it had an outstanding cast that truly brought these beloved comic book characters to life and treated them as dynamic individuals.
Christopher Reeve, especially, gives a spectacular performance in the lead role. What he does best is clearly mark the differences and tension between his naive, dweeby alter ego Clark Kent and the formidable Superman. You can literally see and hear the changes in his persona through the way he carries himself and uses his voice. Margot Kidder is his perfect romantic foil as the spunky Lois Lane,...

In 1978, Warner Bros marketed Superman: The Movie with the tagline, “You’ll believe a man can fly.” This served two purposes. One, it teased how much special effects had evolved throughout the seventies, to the point that making a superhero fly on screen could look realistic rather than cheesy. But, it also promised a fantastic performance by star Christopher Reeve, who slipped into the blue tights and cape and became a legend with his heartfelt performance. Generations later, he’s still the definitive Superman.
When James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy was casting, one of the things that took them the longest to determine was what two actors had the most chemistry as Superman and Lois. The romance between the Man of Steel and Lois Lane always defined the early Richard Donner movies, and when they lost that aspect following the termination of Donner, the franchise fell apart. That’s because Christopher Reeve,...

October has been a pretty exciting month: we celebrated our 250th episode of the podcast with Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, then tackled one of Jason Voorhees’ best entries with Friday the 13th Part 2 before getting real serious with Bryan Singer’s Apt Pupil.
We’re closing out the month with a seasonally appropriate film: Rob Zombie‘s 2009 return to the Halloween franchise, Halloween II. Important note of distinction, however, we’re talking about the Unrated Director’s Cut.
In the film, it’s been two years since Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton) faced down Michael Myers (Tyler Mane) but she’s still suffering from serious Ptsd. Despite Annie (Danielle Harris) and Sheriff Brackett’s (Brad Dourif) claims that she’s safe, Laurie is spiraling as Halloween approaches.
Not helping matters is Dr. Sam Loomis (Malcolm McDowell), who has written an insensitive new book about the murders. As Michael returns to finish what he began,...

Last week, we ran a special Wtf episode about the 1979 Disney movie, The Black Hole, an uncommonly adult film for the family-friendly studio. It kicked off an experiment for the studio to move into adult fare, eventually spawning no less than three subsidiaries that produced some of the most influential movies of the 80s, 90s and 2000s. These off-shoots paved the way for Disney’s place as the most powerful motion picture studio in the world, with them owning Lucasfilm, Pixar and the MCU. With the studio celebrating its 100th anniversary, we figured now would be an opportune time to look back at the studio Disney launched to distribute their more grown-up fare, the now shuttered Touchstone Pictures.

Pressman Film is a production company that was founded by Ed Pressman, a prolific producer of over 90 films, including the likes of Wall Street, American Psycho, and The Crow. Sadly, Pressman passed away earlier this year at the age of 79. Now his son Sam Pressman is the CEO of Pressman Film, which recently rebooted The Crow – and landed an eight-figure domestic distribution deal for the film with Lionsgate. Moving forward, the company is working with Antoine Fuqua on a project called The Street, which was written by Goodfellas‘ Nicholas Pileggi, and planning an adaptation of the 1975 Edward Abbey novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, which will be directed by Catfish‘s Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. They’re also trying to figure out how they can exploit titles in the Pressman Film library… and in a recent article, Deadline mentions that endeavor might involve remakes of the 1980 holiday horror film Christmas Evil...

The making of Apocalypse Now is the story of madness and disaster. As captured in the documentary Hearts of Darkness, the year plus filming saw every manner of bad luck, from conflicts with the Philippine government to massive storms to a constantly changing crew, to star Martin Sheen’s heart attack on set.
But the strangest behind the scenes tale of Apocalypse Now may actually be about the man who initially planned to direct it. The version of Apocalypse Now that hit theaters in 1979 matched the ambitions (and ego) of its director Francis Ford Coppola. But before Coppola took over, Apocalypse Now was actually the baby of the reserved and mild-mannered George Lucas.

Screenwriter John Milius wanted to go to war. One of the few conservatives within a group of lefty young filmmakers that included Martin Scorsese, Margot Kidder, and Paul Schrader, Milius had no interest in protesting the Vietnam War.

While his films have ranged from the sublime to the atrocious, there’s no denying the impact Brian De Palma has had on cinema. Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
De Palma began his filmmaking career directing underground features shot on a shoestring, many of which starred a young Robert De Niro. He came into his own with the Hitchcock-inspired thriller “Sisters” (1973), starring Margot Kidder as a pair of killer Siamese twins. The Master of Suspense would serve as a muse to De Palma throughout his career, influencing such films as “Obsession” (1976), “Dressed to Kill” (1980), “Blow Out” (1980) and “Body Double” (1984) both in style and substance.
He enjoyed his first box office success with “Carrie” (1976), an adaptation of Stephen King’s chilling novel about a shy teenager (Sissy Spacek) with telekinesis. The film brought Oscar nominations to Spacek and Piper Laurie...

Superman has been played by a variety of actors since his creation, with Christopher Reeve embodying the character in 1978’s Superman. Although many saw him as the ideal take on the character, his co-star Margot Kidder wasn’t sold on Reeve at first.

Similarly to Reeve, Kidder won the role of Lois Lane by winning over Superman director Richard Donner. Donner was interested in Kidder after having seen her on a television show. Based on her performance on the small screen, Donner thought Kidder had what he was looking for in the Daily Planet reporter.
His opinion was further solidified when Kidder showed up to audition for the role. What might have cost actors a film role in other auditions just endeared Kidder to Donner even more.

James Gunn has found his hero: David Corenswet has officially been cast as Clark Kent/the Man of Steel in the upcoming Superman: Legacy. He’ll be joined by Rachel Brosnahan, who has been tapped to play Lois Lane in the DC Studios film. Gunn himself confirmed the news on Twitter, adding, “They are not only both incredible actors, but also wonderful people.”
The news comes after a months-long talent search. Both Corenswet and Brosnahan’s names have been at the top of the pile since May, while Nicholas Hoult and Tom Brittney were also vying for the cape and Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor were up for The Daily Planet’s star reporter. Reports that Gunn and his co-dc Studios boss, Peter Safran, had screen-tested all six actors earlier this month signaled that a final decision was near.

James Gunn has found his Superman and Lois Lane.
After a lengthy search, David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan will star in Superman: Legacy, the film that will launch DC’s new universe under writer-director Gunn and his DC Studios co-boss, Peter Safran.
Corenswet and Brosnahan were among six actors who vied for the lead roles, with Gunn filming screen tests over the June 17 weekend with Nicholas Hoult and Tom Brittney also in contention to play Superman/Clark Kent and Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor in the running for Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane.
Few roles are as coveted — or come with as much pressure — as Superman. That’s doubly true in the current landscape, as Corenswet will anchor a new universe as DC attempts to reinvent itself after a streak of misses with October’s Black Adam, March’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods and the recent The Flash. Only...

That’s doubly true in the current landscape, as Corenswet will anchor a new universe as DC attempts to reinvent itself after a streak of misses with October’s Black Adam, March’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods and the recent The Flash. Only...

Look, there’s no denying that things are dire for DC fans right now. With The Flash currently flopping in theaters, the sting of the Batgirl cancelation still lingering, and the hierarchy of power unchanged by Black Adam, those who want to see DC characters enjoying success similar to the Marvelous competition don’t have much hope. And with parent company Warner Bros. experiencing even larger problems, there’s nothing but dark clouds on the horizon.
But, look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No… it’s Superman! According to Deadline, the new Man of Steel will be played by relative newcomer David Corenswet. He’ll be joined by Rachel Brosnahan (Marvelous Ms. Maisel) after a months-long process to find the new Clark Kent and Lois Lane of the revamped Dcu.

The search for Kal-El, the last son of Krypton, commonly known in these parts as Superman, is On!
Deadline has reported that DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran are clearing their calendars for screen tests for a little over a week from now. Among the rumored names in the mix for the role of The Big Blue Boy Scout are Nicholas Hoult, last seen in the horror-comedy “Renfield,” David Corenswet, best known for the indie horror pic “Pearl” and HBO series “We Own This City,” and Tom Brittney, a lead on the series “Grantchester.”
Hoult and Brittney are both British. Corenswet is the only one from the good ol’ U.S.A. (born in Philly.) In the old days, Superman stood for “truth, justice, and the American way.” Coren also sounds a lot like “corn,” and the Kents do live in Smallville.

I’m an ‘80s baby, so I grew up with Margot Kidder as my Lois Lane, even though I’m not sure that I watched those Superman movies until much later in life. But the first time I saw Margot Kidder, the first time I really took her all in, was sometime in the ‘90s, when I watched 1974’s Black Christmas, the Canadian thriller that many consider to be the first true slasher flick.
I loved her from the very first frame.
Even then, at just over 25, Kidder had her own unique charm.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan is on the shortlist to play Lois Lane in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, sources told The Hollywood Reporter.
According to sources, Brosnahan delivered an “outstanding” audition for the spunky Daily Planet reporter but may be in the older range for what Gunn is hoping to achieve with his vision for the Man of Steel — one that focuses on Metropolis heroics with 20-something characters.
Nonetheless, the Emmy-winning actress would love the opportunity to play the iconic comic book character that has been portrayed by actresses like Amy Adams, Erica Durance, Kate Bosworth, Elizabeth Tulloch and Margot Kidder, among others.
“I mean, look, take everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt is my first piece of advice,” Brosnahan joked on The View when asked about the story THR broke that says she is on a shortlist for the character. “Look,...
