By 1983, Stephen King had rocketed to the top of the publishing world within a fairly short period of time. His first novel, Carrie, had been published only nine years before but he was already considered the modern master of the horror novel. The adaptations of his work, Brian DePalma’s Carrie (1976), Tobe Hooper’s TV movie Salem’s Lot (1979), and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980) had only served to feed the fires of his popularity. King had become a cottage industry by the third year of the new decade and the three films based on his work released that year remain among the best connected to his name while exploring some of the greatest issues he grappled with in the early years of his career.
The current preoccupations of a creator so often seep into their work, consciously or unconsciously. In Cujo, The Dead Zone, and Christine, King explores the creative process,...

"I raised him! And it's my job to protect him!" A trailer has debuted for an indie drama called Skipping Stones, arriving in theaters later in 2020. This indie drama originally used the title Skipping Stones to Madonna, but they took out that second name and went with the shorter version for release. The film tells the story of a girl coming to terms with the loss of her brother and her deep friendship with her brother's best friend. This stars Michael Ironside, Patricia Charbonneau, Chase Masterson, Daniel Hugh Kelly, Gabby Kalomiris, & Nathaniel Ansbach. It's described as inspired by other small town dramas like Ordinary People, Moonlight Mile, Stand By Me. But it doesn't seem like it's worth writing home about. Here's the first official trailer for S.J. Creazzo's Skipping Stones, direct from the film's own YouTube: Skipping Stones to Madonna tells the story of a young girl (Amanda...

August’s home entertainment releases are off and running in a big way with this week’s crop of horror and sci-fi titles, as we have nearly two dozen movies coming our way this Tuesday.
Scream Factory is putting in overtime with a handful of stunning steelbooks celebrating three great John Carpenter films—They Live, The Fog and Escape From New York—as well as a Collector’s Edition of James Gunn’s Slither and the indie horror films Don’t Knock Twice and House on Willow Street (which they’ve teamed up with IFC Midnight for).
As far as recent genre movies go, Colossal, Shin Godzilla, and Phoenix Forgotten are all primed for their home bow on August 1st, and both Paramount and Universal are dusting off a bunch of recent titles on both DVD and Blu-ray, including Disturbia, The Machinist, Red Eye, and the unrated version of The Ruins.

Acclaimed film historian and author Lee Gambin will have you cowering in your Ford Pinto curled up with his monumental tome Nope, Nothing Wrong Here: The Making of Cujo, an exhaustive guide to Lewis Teague's 1983 big screen adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling novel Cujo. The book is a meticulously-researched, lovingly-assembled collection featuring thirty exclusive candid interviews and over two hundred never-before-seen production stills.
The author traces the film’s production from troubled start (the firing of original director Peter Medak and replacement by Teague) through the film’s legacy today as one of the most successful and well-regarded onscreen visions of King’s work. Gambin’s academic approach and reverence for the topic makes it essential reading for discerning fans, academics, and cinema history enthusiasts who will revel in his astute scene-by-scene analysis and in-depth behind-the-scenes coverage.

Making her narrative directorial debut, actress Ally Walker‘s earnest, if not subtle Sex, Death and Bowling is by no means a groundbreaking film on any of these three evocative subjects. Attempting a complex tone combining melodrama and quirk, it’s moderately successful on a few fronts. If anything, this picture gets “pre-grieving” right in a few tender moments that resonate deeply. Beyond those moments, the film provides several undercooked sub-plots that made me question if Walker knew who the “A-story” was.

Since Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, the Star Trek cinematic outings have proved to be a smorgasbord of references and famous actors (or those who would go on to be), and often had complex behind the scenes events that stopped some rather, ahem, fascinating moments making it to the final version. We found lots of nerdy spots in the first six films here.
This time out we look at the films featuring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and choose 47 factoids. Granted, there's a lot more than that of interest, but we've tried for ones that you might not be aware of.

Written by: W.W. Jacobs (short novel), Macon Blair (screenplay)
Directed by: Brett Simmons
Cast: C.J. Thomason (Jake), Stephen Lang (Tony Cobb), Daniel Hugh Kelly (Gillespie), Michelle Pierce (Olivia), Corbin Bleu (Catfish), Charles S. Dutton (Detective Margolis), James Minor III (Cory Cobb), Andy Favreau (Kevin)
Anyone that is familiar with the short story “The Monkey’s Paw” knows where the premise of this flick from Chiller Films is headed. It’s a pretty respectable premise though. Horror has always had a cautionary tale basis at its deepest foundations, and this is a timeless morality story that has been given a contemporary spin. Not the first time it’s been done for sure, but if it’s done well, I can definitely roll with it. This version takes place in New Orleans, which happens to be one of my favorite locales for a horror film anyway,...

Access Hollywood talked with Finn Jones about the upcoming season of Game of Thrones. Sadly, he says, “There’s not enough hot gay sex for Loras this season.” I’m going to sit in a corner where I will think about Daenerys dispensing justice with her dragons and Lady Olenna dropping wit bombs until I’m excited about the new season.
Come on, HBO, who is going to fill Lafayette’s shoes once True Blood ends?
Adrianne Palicki will be appearing in a story arc on NBC’s upcoming dramedy About a Boy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

*there are spoilers here. Director: Richard Schenkman. Writers: Jesse Baget, Richard Schenkman and Eric D. Wilkinson. Cast: Ian Bamberg, Noell Coet, Adam C. Edwards, Stephanie Erb and Daniel Hugh Kelly. Director Richard Schenkman's name has come up a couple times this week on 28Dla. Schenkman is the writer behind another horror film titled Zombie Night (2013). His latest feature film from behind the camera is titled Mischief Night. This title was released on a few home entertainment formats on Mischief Night, October 30th, 2013. Unfortunately, in this film, the villains appear very silly, which weakens the conflict. The protagonist, on the other hand, is compelling and developed well, thanks to an interesting character arc. Though, Mischief Night offers the barest of thrills. The...

Well, it might take a while (3 1/2 years to be exact) but The Mentalist (TV) finally delivers on some much needed Lisbon (Robin Tunney) back story. One of the three Lisbon brothers makes an appearance and gets all twisted up in Team Lisbon's investigation and Jane (Simon Baker) might even get an "auntie Reese" story or two. I do love a good character drive episode! Chief of Lancaster Pd, Marnie Green is dead, and it looks like she was killed off site and the killer was too inept to even dump her body correctly. Kudos to Officer Price (Malcolm Barrett) for pulling off the cop grieving for his boss so convincingly. We know Team Lisbon would do the same for her. At the chief's residence, Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) runs into a problem… or two, when he's face to gun muzzle with a bountyhunter and his daughter. Of course, Lisbon is mortified...

Something pulls a girl under whilst she's swimming in the lake. Alluding to the title of this episode, Dead in the Water in two senses: firstly, that whoever got killed was dead in the water (not so funny) or secondly, whatever or whoever did it, was dead in the water. No reference to boats/ ships here, as that's what the title more commonly refers to. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles), in a diner for the first time, and we see how much Dean just loves his food and witness his idea of 'fun'. "You know Sam, we are allowed to have fun once in a while - that's fun." Ugh and we thought it was something completely different, naively, ha. Gotta love the way Dean has this whole new spin on words and vocabulary too. Dean comes across the article in the paper and they head to Lake Manitoc,...

It's easy to see why Warner Bros. chose to sneak "The In Crowd" into theaters during the middle of the week without any advance screenings for the nasty critics.
It's even easier to predict that this excruciatingly lame thriller will be out of circulation long before Labor Day.
Playing like "Girl, Interrupted: The 90210 Years" -- though it makes the recently departed Aaron Spelling series look like high art by comparison -- this tawdry, bubble-headed Morgan Creek production is a sorry underachiever on every level.
It isn't even bad enough to be considered good camp.
Directed with uninspired vapidity by music video director-turned-filmmaker-turned-music video director Mary Lambert ("Pet Semetary", Madonna's "Material Girl" clip), the story centers on efforts of attractive psychiatric hospital outpatient Adrien Williams (Lori Heuring) to re-enter society after seemingly coming to terms with a troubled past.
But leave it to her doctor Daniel Hugh Kelly) to put Adrien's emotional resolve to the test by getting her a job at an obnoxious country club filled with rich, young, pretty, vacuous white kids. As a matter of fact, sightings of any people of color are reserved for background serving staff or foaming-at-the-mouth mental patients. As co-worker Joanne (Kim Murphy) succinctly puts it, "This isn't life, it's a J. Crew catalogue."
Naturally, the inhabitants in question have nothing better to do with their time between the partying and the golf and tennis lessons than to pick on the new girl, who should know better than to allow herself to be taken under the highly suspect wing of resident bitch princess Brittany (Susan Ward).
Apparently unaware that it's never a wise idea for the help to fraternize with the guests, impressionable Adrien manages to find time to balance her pool cleaning with her hectic social life (carefully orchestrated by the conniving Brittany) while failing to heed the warnings of Brittany's resentful outcast lesbian girlfriend Kelly (Laurie Fortier) to steer clear.
The cheesy script by Mark Gibson ("Lush") and Philip Halprin is filled with dorky dialogue uniformly delivered by a young cast with all the commitment of Stepford teens.
Director Lambert, meanwhile, apparently adopted the work ethic, "When in doubt, go for the hackneyed music video effects," which are applied liberally with the willing compliance of DP Tom Priestly ("The Thomas Crown Affair").
As a curious footnote, Warner Bros. has made a "special request" to the very same press it opted to bypass to not reveal the ending of the film to an assumed audience, an ending that is surprising only in that there is absolutely no surprise involved whatsoever.
