Is it possible to essentially like a movie yet feel revulsion toward its script? David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars is clearly intended as a sharp satire of Hollywood ambition, vanity, avarice, and emptiness, and in places it's smart and astringently funny. Yet it seems to be fighting its own bone structure. The script is by Bruce Wagner, a screenwriter, producer, and novelist whose specialty, in bitter little books like Force Majeure and Dead Stars, is skewering Hollywood — he's like a jaundiced eye with a laptop attached. But unlike other novelists who've tackled Hollywood — among them Michael Tolkin, Terry Southern, Don Carpenter, and the lesser-known John Kaye, author of the splendid twin novels Stars Screaming and The Dead Circus &md...

X-Men actor embraces a darker side for role in The Dead Circus.
The film industry just doesn’t get it’s due dose of psychological thrillers. This tends to be blamed on the fact that fictional treatments tend to come out as laughably absurd and factual treatments are so skewed for entertainment value that the original concept is barely recognizable. But there are a few that have gotten it right since David Fincher’s Seven released back in 1995.
And Palermo Pictures looks to add to the positive column with The Dead Circus, a neo-noir thriller adapted from the bestselling novel by John Kaye. The plot centers around the mysterious death of rockabilly Bobby Fuller in 1966 and the grief-stricken ex-cop hell bent on solving the case.
Leading the cast is James Marsden of X-Men fame. The man behind the ruby visor, recently seen in the exceptionally bad CGI-Easter flop, Hop, will portray Charles Manson,...

Deadline's Mike Fleming reports that even though Geoffrey Rush isn't on the cast list, he'll be contributing voice work for the character of Tomar-Re (pictured), the scientist who works alongside the title character in Green Lantern. Fleming also hears Michael Clarke Duncan is a contender for the voice of the character Kilowog, but a final decision hasn't yet been made. I didn't realize the film would have so many CGI characters, but this does little to restore my faith after that dismal first trailer.
According to THR, John Travolta has signed on to play mobster John Gotti Sr. in Gotti: Three Generations. The film will focus on the relationship between John Gotti Sr. and John Gotti Jr., who took over the family business for his father. The younger Gotti served time in prison before successfully escaping conviction in four subsequent racketeering trials. Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook, Alpha Dog) will direct.

Remember when it seemed like James Marsden was going to be a much bigger star than he has become? After the X-Men movies and his awesome role in Enchanted, I expected him to shoot up into the stratosphere. And then…it didn’t happen. Instead, 27 Dresses did. And this weekend, Hop will be ushered into theaters so that parents worldwide can find a good enough distraction to not have to talk to their kids.
Crappy kids movie aside, it looks like Marsden isn’t ready to just get sucked into the vacuum of generic films quite yet. Deadline reports that the actor will be playing famous cult leader (and decent musician) Charles Manson in The Dead Circus. The movie, written by Adam Davenport and John Kaye (who also wrote the novel), fictionalizes the very real and very mysterious death of singer Bobby Fuller, throwing in the Manson family as part of the conspiracy for giggles.

It.s been a good month for 1960.s singers found dead under mysterious circumstances. First, civil rights pioneer and .A Change Is Gonna Come. singer Sam Cooke finally saw real progress made on his biopic, and now Bobby Fuller is getting a film which bisects his strange undoing with the Manson family. Yes, the latter project is just as strange, if not stranger, than it sounds, but with most of the world already having forgotten Fuller existed, something tells me the musician wouldn.t be too disappointed with getting his name back up in lights. According to Deadline, Adam Davenport has joined author John Kaye in adapting his own novel entitled The Dead Circus. The former will also direct the project, which outlines the Bobby Fuller Four lead singer.s death at the age of twenty-three, just days after his hit .I Fought The Law. raced up the charts. The...
