From one 1999 horror remake to another. After rewatching The Haunting with eyes that were both more critical and 25 years older, it got me thinking about the other remake that came out that year. One that was a remake of a far sillier movie and that was the first effort from a new studio, namely Dark Castle Entertainment. The original was from a far less dark castle in that of schlock and gimmick purveyor William Castle and it starred Vincent Price as a man offering strangers money to stay in an allegedly haunted house for a night. While The Haunting failed on multiple levels to improve with age, how does House on Haunted Hill (watch it Here) look after a quarter of a century? Does its cheesy yet graphic tone feel at home in the time of A24 and elevated horror or should it forfeit its 1 million dollar check and leave the cursed grounds forever.

Lorne Michaels is an expert at celebrating the legacy of “Saturday Night Live.” The show’s creator has produced variety specials for the NBC program’s 15th anniversary, 25th anniversary and 40th anniversary, so the upcoming 50th season should have a highly entertaining spectacle. Nothing less than a three-hour event would be expected, but how else should “SNL” celebrate the golden anniversary season, which would begin in the autumn of 2024 and continue through May, 2025?
Here is our exciting, fun suggestion for a way to go above and beyond for the live special. Over the course of a 20-22 episode season, NBC would certainly have almost every episode featuring the current cast along with hot guest hosts and musical guests. However, for the other five episodes spread out over several months, devote an entire 90 minutes to each previous decade. Invite back the biggest cast members from a decade along with well-known guest hosts and music stars.

Long before she transitioned, Harper Steele was a writer at Saturday Night Live. She was hired in 1995, the same week that a performer named Will Ferrell joined the cast. Unlike his fellow Groundlings Chris Kattan and Cheri Oteri, who’d also been recruited from the L.A.-based improv group to join SNL that season, Ferrell had a hard time finding his groove right away. No one quite knew how to use this tall comedian with the deadpan stare and an ability to go from 1 to 1,000 on the rage scale in seconds flat.

As the special-effects makeup chief for “Saturday Night Live,” Louie Zakarian often has interesting demands put on his time. He once transformed Kate McKinnon into an offbeat mermaid. And he worked with Kyle Mooney to create the Baby Yoda character who made frequent appearances on “Weekend Update.”
These days, Zakarian gets even more outlandish asks, thanks to Sarah Sherman, the “SNL” cast member who might, during one week, ask him to devise a fake seagull that can be impaled in her torso while moving its legs, and, in another, order up a costume so she can dress as the oddball Six Flags mascot, but still get back to normal for a subsequent sketch 10 minutes later.
“I’ve been at the show for 29 years now,” says Zakarian. “I get some pretty crazy requests, but some of Sarah’s are really out there.”

With “Dancing with the Stars” returning for a 32nd season this fall on ABC after switching last year to Disney+, there’s a long list of celebrities who deserve a chance on the dance floor. Two of my past suggestions came true: Frankie Muniz (who came in third on season 25) and Kel Mitchell (who came in second on season 28). Below are six male stars I think the show should consider inviting to compete for the next Mirror Ball Trophy. Do you agree with these picks? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know who you’d most like to see on “DWTS.” And feel free to sound off in the comments about what other stars you’d like to see when the show comes back in September.

I know you are, but what am I!
I know you are, but what am I?
Childlike rejoinder or existential inquiry?
In the case of Paul Reubens and Pee-wee Herman, his most indelible creation, the answer is an unambiguous, “Yes.”
Inclusive disjunctions of this sort are almost unavoidable when it comes to Reubens and Pee-wee.
Was Pee-wee Herman an overgrown, well-dressed child or a childish, enthusiastically regressive man?
Yes.
Was Pee-wee’s Big Adventure a comedy for adults or an absurdist fairy tale for children?
Yes.
Was Pee-wee’s Playhouse, the astonishingly avant-garde series built around the character and his outlandish and occasionally inanimate friends, a Saturday morning variety platform directed at kids or a satire on Saturday morning variety platforms directed at grownups?
Yes.

Originally announced way back in 2018, director Barry Andersson is turning the viral Creepypasta tale of the “Russian Sleep Experiment” into a horror movie, but it’s been radio silence on the project since that original report. Today, Screen Daily breaks the silence.
Screen Daily reports that “Los Angeles based production and distribution company Buffalo 8 has acquired worldwide rights” to the film, which is titled Soviet Sleep Experiment.
Soviet Sleep Experiment, based on the Creepypasta urban legend, tells the story of “Russian researchers who keep four patients awake using an experimental stimulant. When the experiment spirals out of control the subjects take matters into their own hands.”
The original Creepypasta tale had claimed that Soviet researchers had used an experimental stimulant back in the 1940s to keep five people awake for 15 consecutive days.
The cast for Soviet Sleep Experiment includes Eva De Dominici, Rafal Zawierucha, Chris Kattan, Evgeny Krutov, Michael Villar,...

We all have a list of films we’ll always sit down to watch when we see them playing on cable or available on streaming. These can be critical darlings or cult classics or twisty thrillers or simply our go-to comfort food movies. They don’t even necessarily need to be considered good but to us they’re special.
Unsurprisingly, not all of our sentimental favorites earned the positive critical recognition we feel they deserved upon release. Here are 15 popcorn classics whose Rotten Tomatoes scores are surprisingly lower than you’d expect.

It’s probably not a huge surprise to learn that this cult horror fave (and ersatz Warhammer 40K prequel movie) isn’t a critical darling. We’ve never cared. Who among us doesn’t own a raggedy DVD copy with the secondhand price tag still on the case?

Elon Musk has a plan to “destroy the bots” of Twitter…but that doesn’t mean he can tame the trolls. In the same week that Elon Musk announced Twitter would be charging to become and remain verified and earn that precious little blue checkmark, users have started effectively exposing the faults in a rather curious and comical way.
The problem arises in that Twitter users desiring the coveted blue checkmark could pay for one, pass themselves off as celebrities and cause general havoc on social media. As reported by The New York Times, “Mr. Musk’s new Twitter Blue subscription service, which will give subscribers the check mark next to their username, is aiming to begin on Nov. 7 in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, according to internal documents seen by The Times. As reported by The New York Times, “Mr. Musk’s new Twitter Blue subscription service, which will give subscribers the check mark next to their username, is aiming to begin on Nov. 7 in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, according to internal documents seen by The Times. Saturday Night Live has been the same show since forever and yet every episode is different. Since its inception in 1975, the beloved and bemoaned American sketch comedy series has accommodated a new host every week, stretching to meet the celeb du jour’s hidden talents and defining quirks. There were Ariane Grande’s musical impressions. Christopher Walken pleading for “More cowbell!” And Justin Timberlake, who won an actual Emmy for writing the lyrics to “Dick in a Box”. Occasionally, the show is forced to compensate for an entirely charmless emcee. Ahem, Rudy Giuliani.
The full-time ensemble gets rejigged each season, which means that every September is someone’s first day on one of the oldest jobs in TV. Along with the ever-changing cast, the need to adapt is written into its DNA. The country’s shifting politics have long been a bedrock of SNL’s humour, but SNL doesn’t anticipate the conversation.

As Lorne Michaels tells it, Saturday Night Live’s most significant cast shakeup in a generation is a product of the pandemic.
In interviews after the Emmy Awards and with The New York Times, Michaels noted that in normal times, the likes of Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant and Pete Davidson might have left SNL in 2020 or 2021 to pursue other work.
“The pandemic had put us in this position where no one could really leave because there were no jobs,” Michaels told the Times, echoing his post-Emmys comments that there “was no place to go” for long-serving cast members who might otherwise have left beforehand.
Regardless of the cause, Saturday’s 48th season opener will be the first show after one of the largest cast shake-ups in its history. The show did a near-total overhaul prior to the 1985-86 season, and a similar one...

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Jordan Peele's "Nope."
It's hard to imagine anyone who had "Chris Kattan playing a monkey is a key component of Jordan Peele's new horror movie" on their bingo card. Yet there it is, more than halfway into act two of the sketch performer turned horror auteur's latest. Ricky "Jupe" Park, a former child actor played with verve and pent-up loss by Steven Yeun who details the "genius" efforts Kattan took to play Gordy, a chimpanzee and former sitcom star who brutally murdered his cast mid-taping. The moment likely alludes to this real, seminal "Saturday Night Live" sketch; Gordy's show was possibly...

For his third feature, Jordan Peele ambitiously sets out to create a sci-fi spectacle, and he succeeds greatly with the magic he’s able to create in Nope. If there’s one thing I would say to readers out there before I get into the nuts and bolts of Peele’s latest (and just know that there will be no spoilers), it’s that if you think that you’re in for a traditional alien invasion story with Nope, you most definitely are not. For some out there, that might be an issue. But for this writer, that’s probably what I loved about it most. Don’t worry - there’s no bait and switch here. There are aliens. But what Nope really is about are powerful entities that are hellbent on consumption, with little regard for the lives they are affecting, and we see that play out in...

You might be surprised to learn that Meredith Vieira has quite the funny bone. The TV personality showed off her comedic talents while telling the story of how she almost appeared on Saturday Night Live exclusively with E! News' Daily Pop on June 28. Back when cast member Molly Shannon was on the show, Vieira was set to appear in a sketch with Chris Kattan's character Mango, which ultimately got cut. "They sent Molly in to tell me," she told hosts Justin Sylvester and Loni Love, "and I was really upset." Later, she was offered a chance to make up for her scrapped role (which involved holding a whip) in the episode's opening sketch with Tim Meadow's Ladies...

Miesha, Miesha, Miesha. After 29 days, it was Miesha Tate who added another championship to her proverbial mantle as the Season 3 winner of the CBS reality series Celebrity Big Brother. The trailblazing Mma fighter dominated the competition alongside her ride-or-die Todrick Hall. The two were strong allies and forged an unbreakable bond, which was the common thread throughout the game. In the end, the evicted houseguests (minus SNL vet Chris Kattan who left the show early) chose Miesha by a vote of 7-1 to earn the $250,000. Todrick ruffled just one too many feathers with his arguably cutthroat strategy but did walk away in second place with $50,000. “America’s Favorite Houseguest” went to Carson Kressley. We caught up with “Cupcake” Tate to chat about why the reality TV competition was among the biggest challenges of her life. What do you think your strong performance on the show will do in terms of...

It took 29 days for the Celebrity Big Brother house to pare down this season’s 11 hopefuls, and on Wednesday’s season finale, the finalists were hungrier than ever to earn a spot in those final two seats. Even hungrier than a sleepwalking, cake-chomping Chris Kattan.
As a result of Monday’s double eviction, Todd Bridges and Lamar Odom got the boot, leaving Todrick Hall, Miesha Tate and Cynthia Bailey as the Final 3. And while crazier things have happened (I mean, who would’ve guessed that Jordan Lloyd would’ve won Season 11?), Cynthia’s going to have to win something, anything...

During Monday’s one-hour finale of “CBB3,” the eight-person jury voted to give the $250,000 grand prize to Miesha Tate. All month long, Cynthia Bailey, Miesha Tate and Todrick Hall fought for their place to be on the “Celebrity Big Brother” winners list, and now it’s time to hand out the $250,000 grand prize. Heading into finale night, Miesha had a leading five challenge wins under her belt, compared to just two for Todrick and zero for Cynthia. But there was still a Head of Household competition on the line that would determine who made it to the Final 2 and who would be the last member of the jury. So who won “CBB3”?

Last week, a very exciting Super Bowl aired, and during that Super Bowl countless commercials for the new “Law & Order” were featured. Usually they are only advertising big shows weeks down the road, but here we are, and here “Law & Order” is. But don’t worry, Dick Wolf’s immortal crime-and-court classic isn’t the only thing to debut this week, with a lengthy new Abraham Lincoln documentary, the latest Tyler Perry-led “Madea” sequel and another few episodes with shambling zombies all coming home.

With both title and central buddy dynamic tipping hat to “Superbad,” among other raunchy teen comedies, “Supercool” is not the kind of movie that wins prizes for originality. Nor is Finnish director Teppo Airaksinen’s first U.S.-shot, English-language project as outrageous as it thinks it is. Nonetheless, this energetic spin through high school antics redolent of everything since “Ferris Bueller” is colorful and amusing enough to entertain viewers looking for a familiar mix of bad-taste gags in a squeaky-clean suburban setting. Vertical Entertainment is releasing it to 20 U.S. theater screens as well as on-demand platforms Feb. 11.

Heading into the first live eviction episode of “Celebrity Big Brother 3,” Head of Household Miesha Tate had nominated Mirai Nagasu (her true target) and Carson Kressley (just a pawn). But things quickly change within the ‘Bb’ house and it wasn’t long before Todrick Hall got in Miesha’s ear and convinced the Mma fighter that Carson was the real threat to win this game. With the crosshairs now on Carson (unbeknownst to him), the “Queer Eye” O.G. dominated the Veto competition and took himself off the block. Miesha had no choice but to replace Carson with Teddi Mellencamp, who she had guaranteed safety earlier in the week.
