Coming 2 America (film on Amazon Prime); Cast: Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, KiKi Layne, Shari Headley, Teyana Taylor, Wesley Snipes, James Earl Jones; Direction: Craig Brewer; Rating: * * and 1/2 (two and a half stars)

You'd be okay with all that goes on if you loved the first film. Coming 2 America essentially tries to be more of the same. Which is what most sequels do, except that this one comes a good 33 years after the original released.
Back in 1988 when Coming To America released, Eddie Murphy was a superstar. Revisiting a brand of comedy that seemed cool over three decades ago can be a tough deal, and Murphy is obviously banking on his fan base of yore to sail through.
Well, one thing is clear. At 59, Murphy has lost none of the vim. He strikes vintage form with comic timing and reloads the infectious,...

Eddie Murphy is back in one of his most iconic roles. Yes, Prince Akeem is again going to tickle our funny bones. A sequel to Coming to America had long been spoken about, but it finally happened. Moreover, we now have a Trailer for Coming 2 America which we can pour over. Of course, the film notably got acquired by Amazon Studios and will drop on Amazon Prime Video in March, so we have a bit of a wait (one that excludes it from any Oscar consideration this year). Still, it’s something exciting, and you can see the Trailer at the end of this post… The movie is, obviously, a Coming to America sequel. The synopsis is as follows: “Set in the lush and royal country of Zamunda, newly-crowned King Akeem (Eddie Murphy) and his trusted confidante Semmi (Arsenio Hall) embark on an all-new hilarious adventure that has them...

Amazon dropped the trailer for “Coming 2 America” Tuesday, featuring Eddie Murphy reprising his iconic role as Prince Akeem from “Coming to America” — actually, that’s King Akeem now — and taking on a few other parts you’ll remember from the 1988 comedy, plus some new ones.
And not to be outdone, Murphy’s “Coming to America” co-star Arsenio Hall — who is back as Akeem’s trusted confidante, Semmi — is also playing multiple roles again.
Per Amazon, “Set in the lush and royal country of Zamunda, newly-crowned King Akeem (Eddie Murphy) and his trusted confidante Semmi (Arsenio Hall) embark on an all-new hilarious adventure that has them traversing the globe from their great African nation to the borough of Queens, New York – where it all began.”

Amazon Prime has finalized acquisition of worldwide rights to “Coming 2 America,” the long awaited sequel to the 1988 comedy classic starring Eddie Murphy, and will release it to subscribers globally on March 5, 2021, the company announced Friday.
Paramount originally slated the movie for a Dec. 22 opening in theaters. But after the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the year’s theatrical release schedule, the studio began talks in October to sell “Coming 2 America” to Amazon in a deal worth around $125 million.
The sequel, which reunites Murphy with his “Dolemite Is My Name” director Craig Brewer, is set 30 years after the original as Murphy’s Prince Akeem prepares to ascend to the throne of the fictional African nation of Zamunda — only to discover that he has a long-lost son named Lavelle who lives in Queens.
To respect his father’s dying wish, he returns to America to find Lavelle and groom him as the new crown prince.

By Robert W. Welkos When you ask indie producer Luillo Ruiz how his recent low-budget action-comedy film Welcome to the Jungle featuring veteran martial arts star Jean-Claude Van Damme could come with 31 producer credits, his answer is simple and straightforward. The film’s financiers were given executive producer credits, he said, while others who provided their production skills for less than what they would normally charge accepted other producer credits. “They are not charging what they are supposed to charge but they are very passionate about bringing their skill to this film and the skills they bring to this film have a cost. That cost you should repay,” Ruiz explained by telephone from Puerto Rico, where his production company, Piemienta, is located and where the film was shot. In the film, which came out in limited release Feb. 7 and has also been released on DVD, Van Damme plays an unhinged...

I participated in a Dreamago panel moderated by WGA-West VP and USC film writing prof and an artistic director at the Sundance Institute Wrting Labs, Howard Rodman.
Other panelists included Vince Fischer who, having been educated and working in Paris, Montreal, New York in business and advertising, event production, and creating the endorsement agency GlamCom which initiates deals between celebrities and products, such as he did with George Clooney and Nespresso, has gone on to create Artistic Alliance Eci which represents screenwriters, directors and actors with offices in Beijing, L.a. and Paris, to match people and projects abroad. Daniel Hsia, the writer/ director of Shanghai Calling, (Isa: Aldamisa) a U.S. - China co-production distributed in China by China Film Group and in So. Korea by Sookie and due to be released in Norht America in 2013 works with Janet Yang and is eager to do more co-productions in China though he admits to difficulties with censors, etc. You can see the trailer of Shanghai Calling here.
Neil Landau who wrote Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, the 3D animated feature Tad: The Lost Explores from Paramount which is the highest grossing animated film in Spain's history and the #1 Spanish box ofice movie of the year, is now working on its sequel and another animated feature by the same director. His latest screenplay is being produced by Cary Brokaw for Avenue Pictures (The Player, Closer, Angels in America). He is curretnly developing an original miniseries for HBO for the Russian Market and a crime drama for Sreda in Moscow.
Paula Manzanedo-Schmitt is VP of Film Finances Inc. the world leader in completion guarantees. She has been involved in more than 1,000 films and TV programs internationally and in U.S. She spoke of the various cross-cultural requisites in film production abroad.
The discussion centered around whether filmmakers could make a film without the notorioius interference of studios (they should all be so lucky as to have this problem). In other words, the panelists discussed their experiences making films with Russians and Chinese. All agreed that working abroad, and especially with international sales agents who also produce allows for greater freedom of vision (although in China the reward is writng so that China censorship does not interfere because one has written to their specifications). All agreed also that there is a certain cross-cultural divide one must discover in order to work effectively.

** Work with international sales agents who produce international coproductions which include U.S., or with the producers of those films who now have established track records.

Hungaricom Ltd (Hungary) has the English language animated comedy feature The Secret of Moonacre and Immigrants - L.A. Dolce Vita both produced by Arlene Klasky, Gabor Csupo, and Gabor Kalomista, a Los Angeles based company with Hungarian born principals. The synopsis of Immigrants is worth repeating: More people immigrate to America than to all other countries in the whole world combined. Why? Is it because they love hot dogs and hamburgers? Or because they want to meet Snoop Dogg or have a close encounter with Pamela Anderson? Maybe. But the real reason is – immigrants go to the U.S. to chase the American dream. Immigrants is the story of Vladislav (a Russian), and Joska (a Hungarian). Both are immigrants and best friends, living and chasing the American dream together. Vlad has a daughter, Ana, who’s adapting to life in America at the speed of light, while her dad is in complete culture shock. They stay at the Vista del Mar, an apartment complex run by an old failed actress, Greta Knight, who is always after Vlad for sexual favors. The building is home to immigrants from all over the world: Flaco, a friend from Mexico; Mr. Chea, who runs a Chinese family restaurant; Nazim, a former Pakistani nuclear scientist who drives a tour bus; and Mr. Splits, an old black pimp. We follow Vlad and Joska in their adventures… through their encounter with the American capitalist company Glut-co, through their attempt to open a Russian/Hungarian restaurant, and as their friendship is put in jeopardy when they hit the L.A. night scene. All the while Vlad is looking for a way to make a life for himself and his daughter; and Joska… well, Joska is mainly looking for women.

We don’t know how many teams are in front of us and how many teams are behind us.
Without knowing it, Marcus’ comment while riding in to Bangkok turned out to be perfect foreshadowing for a tremendous ending to the leg. The 19th season of The Amazing Race has been a lot of fun and this week’s episode, "I Feel Like I'm In The Circus," continued that trend.
Despite a solid start to the leg which included an unexpected back to back Roadblock the real drama for this week did not occur until the last third of the leg. With the aforementioned two Roadblocks complete the teams scrambled to find bus transportation for a 500 mile trip to Bangkok. There were plenty of options and the separation and confusion that occurred because of those options gave us our phenomenal finish.

One of the biggest complaints I've had about Emmy powerhouse The Amazing Race is that the results have increasingly been determined not by the performance of a team in that leg's road block/detour but more logistical errors that render said challenges pretty irrelevant. It doesn't make as much of a difference in the grander scheme of things, considering how frustratingly simple the detours and road blocks have gotten in recent years, but for a show with as strong a pedigree as The Amazing Race has to let cab drivers and plane tickets trump the supposedly amazing part of your race is pretty maddening.
"I Feel Like I'm in the Circus" is arguably the most prime example of this phenomenon thus far in the season, as the two road blocks had absolutely no effect on the outcome of the race. I understand that there are other factors that determine who wins The Amazing Race,...

First coined by sociologist Robert Merton, the self-fulfilling prophecy is a concept that involves expectations forming reality. If one chooses to define their situation a certain way, the reality of their definition will eventually come to fruition, which is often a fairly negative ordeal.
In a nutshell, if you think something will be awful, chances are it'll be awful, which can easily transfer to television.
When I first saw that the title of Sunday's episode of The Amazing Race was "This is Gonna Be a Fine Mess", I had to laugh because, like America's Next Top Model last season, the show was just taunting me. It's been a lackluster season of the race, characterized by lame challenges, static running order plagued by time equalizers, and a lack of charismatic, root-able teams in which to invest in. If you're going to title your episode something about a "fine mess", you're just asking for it,...

This week’s episode of The Amazing Race, "Don't Lay Down on Me Now," was certainly the best of this short season and definitely one of the best in quite a while.
Installments such as this - where we find ourselves on the edge of our seat and cheering for teams - is why The Amazing Race is such an awesome show.
There are a number of elements that make up a great episode and this week hit them all. Let’s break them down.
The most important factor is uncertainty and dynamics. This week was packed with both culminating and a phenomenal finish. The roadblock challenge at the end of the leg gave any team an opportunity to catch up, regardless of how far behind they were.
Case in point? Amani and Marcus , who fell behind because of taxi cab issues, but still managed a sixth place finish. Sure,...

Although I hate to admit it, I gained a little bit of optimism about The Amazing Race after last week's entertaining-but-still-flawed double elimination episode. However, while it was an improvement over the premiere, it had enough beautiful location shots and mid-race flailing by the teams to where I could (mostly) overlook the easy challenges and generally static positioning. By now, the season would have had a chance to settle in and find its groove, so the third episode would be pivotal in terms of establishing how the remaining legs would be.
If "Don't Lay Down on Me Now" is any indication, we're in for a confusing, frustrating, moderately entertaining finish to The Amazing Race, as it was another weak episode that wiped out whatever sense of optimism I had after episode two. For one, the ambiguity of the clues has to be reigned in a little bit. I actively encourage...

The Amazing Race's latest episode kicks off with previous leg winners Andy and Tommy getting the first clue - the teams will have to fall into formation with a group of local bicycle enthusiasts and ride to a specified destination where the bicycle guard commander will hand over the next clue. As the other teams depart too, Kaylani tells us that she's a single mom and is desperate to do well on the race for her young daughter. Cindy informs us of the prep work that she and Ernie did before leaving on the race, which includes geography and language lessons, while Cathi pokes fun at the age difference between herself and Bill and the rest of the team, and Justin and Jennifer vow to curb their sibling bickering. Amani and Marcus are the last to leave and feeling the pressure. Disaster strikes for Ernie and Cindy on the...

Previously on The Amazing Race, we met all the teams, including Ron & Bill representing Team Gay for the season, were introduced to an old Speed Bump dressed up as a new “Hazard” and saw one team's Race saved by social media. After wandering the streets of Taipei for hours, grandparents Bill & Cathi arrived at the Pit Stop last but in a surprise twist were not Philiminated. In another surprise twist we learned that for the first time ever the last two teams to arrive at the next Pit Stop would be Philiminated.
Ernie & Cindy, the first team to arrive at the Pit Stop, left at 9:28 Pm and Bill & Cathi were last out at 3:57 Am, six and a half hours later. Teams raced to the airport to catch a flight to Indonesia. The first flight out wasn't until well on the next morning, so pretty much nothing from Leg 1 ended up mattering.

In all honesty, I wasn't looking forward to this week's episode of The Amazing Race. The show was coming off a premiere that embraced a lot of what has made the last few seasons less enjoyable and if things hadn't improved in the 19th season premiere, this season was already shot, right?
Right?
"The Sprint of Our Life" was a noticeable rebound over "Kindness of Strangers". It may not have been a truly perfect episode of The Amazing Race, but there was enough of a balance between the dizzying twists, intriguing team dynamics, and good ol' fashioned competition that made it a fun watch, at least for me.
The main thing I was excited to see was that the challenges had improved. (That's not saying much considering that the premiere had a challenge where teams used the phone.) The spelunking could have been better had the teams been forced to...

Just when you think you have all the answers, I change all the questions.
The famous quote from former WWE wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper is the perfect saying for this week’s episode of The Amazing Race, "The Spirit of Our Life." Teams were so flustered by the first change, the double elimination, that over 70% of them didn’t pay attention to the smallest change.
Having never run the race myself, perhaps I do not understand the mania that takes over when the fear of being eliminated is so eminent. Additionally, as the race has evolved the margins separating the teams have gradually gotten smaller. However, it continues to amaze me how often teams are eliminated or make mistakes simply from not reading.
With that in mind, I give The Amazing Race producers a lot of credit for this week’s simple twist in the middle of the episode. From years of watching the show,...

And they are off! The 19th season of The Amazing Race sent eleven teams of two out on a racearoundtheworld for One! Million! Dollars! I had my vodka chilled and ready to go for my own personal Tar Drinking Game. You do a shot every time someone calls their teammate “babe,” you do a shot every time someone says they can't do a task, and every time someone says they're quitting the Race you do a double shot. When Brent and Caite were Racing a few seasons back I almost died of alcohol poisoning.

The Amazing Race kicked off its brand new season tonight with another 11 teams gathering at the pitstart in Southern California in the hopes of making it through 12 gruelling legs and claiming the $$1 million prize. This season's racers are: former Olympic snowboarders Andy and Tommy, former Survivor winners Ethan and Jenna (who want to keep their winning past a secret but are rumbled by some of the other teams), newly-engaged Ernie and Cindy, father-and-son adventurers Lawrence and Zack, siblings Jennifer and Justin, married grandparents Bill and Cathi, twin sisters Liz and Marie, domestic partners Bill and Ron, dating couple Jeremy and Sandy, married couple Amani and Marcus, and former Showgirls Kahlani and Lisa. The first challenge in question is a word puzzle which involves piecing together six letters displayed on a board with three letters found on one of the (more)...

Last season on The Amazing Race, the wheels started to come off the bus more noticeably. Although the show won its 8th Emmy earlier this month, the Unfinished Business season as a whole was pretty underwhelming, with relatively easy challenges, alliance domination like no other season, and a winner that never rose above the pack during any particular part of the show, minus the finale.
Which is why I'm so disappointed in "Kindness of Stranger", the show's 19th season premiere. It seems that instead of tightening up the proceedings, casting strong, capable teams, and getting back to what made the show so great in the first place, the powers that be decided to go in the opposite direction and made the show that much more maddening.
The challenges during the premiere were a little silly and seemed too easy to be getting the response they got from the teams. I...

"The Amazing Race" premieres, kicking off in Los Angeles with their 11 teams of two. Are you excited for the 19th season?
Thoughts during intros:
It's great to see Ethan Zohn of "Survivor" looking so great after his battle with cancer. Love that there is a pair from Stone Mountain, Ga. Isn't that where Kenneth the Page is from on "30 Rock"?The twins need to dial down on the use of "literally." I'm a big Colts fan, so it's great to see Marcus Pollard on the show.
The First Challenge
The winners of the first leg once again win the Express Pass, which they can use up to the end of the eighth leg to skip any challenge. The first challenge is a tricky word puzzle that will reveal their first location (Taipei, Taiwan). The team that's last receives a Hazard penalty, which they have to complete sometime during the first leg.

The Emmy Award-winning race is starting again! This time on The Amazing Race, Olympic snowboarders (Andy and Tommy), Survivor winners (Ethan and Jenna), and sailing record setters (Laurence and Zac) are competing! There's also engaged couple Ernie and Cindy, brother and sister Justin and Jennifer, married grandparents Bill and Cathi, who farm, and Twins (remember that beer commercial?). The twins are named Liz and Marie. The classically good looking dating couple, Jeremy and Sandy, are in the race, along with domestic partners Tom and Bill (go gay couple!), NFL husband and wife Amani and Marcus, and showgirls Kaylani and Lisa filling the token hot team slot.
The Express Pass is back, and goes to the first team to finish this leg. The first challenge is a word puzzle leading them to Taipei, Taiwan. The last team to finish this puzzle receives a new stumbling block: the Hazard. The teams rush...

The big screen adapation of John Milton’s epic poem “Paradise Lost” appears to be rounding out its cast in a big (and fast) way. Alex Proyas‘s film already has Bradley Cooper and Ben Walker (soon to be seen as Honest Abe in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) set to square off as the archangels Lucifer and Michael, with Djimon Hounsou on board as Abdiel (the angel of death, for those of you unfamiliar with your angels). Now Variety reports that the film may have also locked in its Gabriel, Adam, and Eve. The outlet reports that Casey Affleck is in negotiations for the role of Gabriel. The archangel is traditionally the one who communicates with humans and is sent from God to do so. He’s also the one who blows the trumpet that kicks off the end of time and the Last Judgment. He’s a fun dude! Jeff...

Last season on The Amazing Race, we watched 11 teams that had previously competed on the show come back for another chance to see the world and win a million dollars in the process. This upcoming season, on the other hand? We won't know every team going in, but it looks like we'll be familiar with more people than one might think, especially following an all-star season.
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Survivor winners Ethan Zohn (Survivor: Africa) and Jenna Morasca (Survivor: The Amazon) will be one of the 11 teams competing on the 19th season of the Emmy winning reality series. The two, who are currently dating, wouldn't be the first CBS Reality Royal Couple to make the trek around the world, as Boston Rob and Amber competed on seasons 7 and 11 and Big Brother's Jeff and Jordan appeared on season 16.

If you were ever worried about Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez fading away, a distant memory of 2011, fear no more: the teen stars have been immortalized in "Justin and Selena as One," a life-sized portrait from sculptor Daniel Edwards, the Dallas Observer reported on Tuesday.
"Justin and Selena as One," which the artist said will eventually be cast in bronze, depicts the teens almost completely nude, save for a Canadian maple leaf and Texas "lone star" concealing their respective nether regions. The portrait will be presented at New Fine Arts, an adult megastore in Dallas, at a later date.
Edwards explained the piece in a statement provided to HuffPost:
“Justin and Selena as One” features the ‘Adam and Eve’ couple conjoined at the torso, each seeming to emerge from the other’s rib. Together, they have three legs, sharing Selena’s right leg as she appears to lead the younger...

The phrase “Tmi” was invented for situations like these. Also, “My Eyes!” Because that was our reaction when we heard Us based artist Daniel Edwards had created a sculpture of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez nude together. Can we please repeat this? Justin Bieber. Selena Gomez. Together. Naked. They’re supposed to be a 21st Century Adam and Eve. And just to up the ick factor, he’s called the piece. “Justin and Selena as One.” Seriously? And check this out, their most naughty bits have been covered by a Canadian maple leaf and a Texas lone star respectively.
It gets even more freaky. Right in front of the couple, he’s created a sculpture of a Canada goose — how should we say this politely — getting it on with a Texas armadillo. And in the best “explanation” we’ve heard, Edwards’ rep Cory Allen has said of the whole thing,...

'Teenage celebrities [are] exploited early, earlier than what is legal, and the media fuels that,' artist Daniel Edwards tells MTV News.

The Internet was abuzz this week when controversial artist Daniel Edwards released his latest piece of art: a nude statue of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez with the words "Justin & Selena Forever" inscribed at the base of the statue.
The bronze statue, called "Justin and Selena as One," plays on the idea of Adam and Eve, with Bieber wearing a strategically placed maple leaf and Gomez wearing a strategically placed Texas Lone Star — references to Justin's native Canada and Selena's home state. But Edwards told MTV News the images aren't meant to be provocative for the sake of being provocative.

Teen couple Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez have gone naked in the name of art. Controversial sculptor Daniel Edwards has created a bronze metallic statue of the twosome almost entirely nude with only a Canadian Maple Leaf and a Texas Lone Star covering their intimate parts.
Titled "Justin and Selena as One", the life size portrait presents the "Baby" hitmaker and his songstress girlfriend as a 21st Century Adam and Eve. To be unveiled at Dallas' New Fine Arts, it features them conjoined at the torso with Selena appearing to lead Justin toward "Eden". In front of them are a Canada goose and Texas armadillo.
Of the statue, Daniel said in the press release, "The portrait represents both Canadian exceptionalism and Texas-American exceptionalism, but I believe Justin and Selena would ultimately choose Canada for their Garden of Eden, because Canada's Medicare and Aaa credit rating make it easier for young...

This week I thought I would see how much the size of the screen affects my ranking of a movie. Put another way: What are the top ten movies I saw on video for the first time? In the past I’ve argued that seeing a movie in the theater is likely to make you appreciate it slightly more than you would otherwise. (Not a particularly earth-shattering observation.) That’s certainly not true in all cases, and the reverse — liking a movie less if you see it on video for the first time — is difficult to prove as well. We see more bad movies at home than in the theater because we’re usually not willing to spend theatrical prices on movies we suspect will be bad. So all the marginal crap eventually gets watched on DVD. However, I argue that if we did see those movies in the theater,...

To say the Rio leg on The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business was not made for Zev Glassenberg and Justin Kanew would be an understatement. First, Zev and his "white boy rhythm" clashed with the samba Roadblock and then the best friends — the hairiest team of all — had to endure even more cruel and unusual punishment: waxing. "I don't know if the leg was designed to torture us, but it certainly did do that," Justin tells TVGuide.com. "We're going to give them the benefit of the doubt that they didn't throw that waxing thing in there when they saw that we were in the final four." Still, there are no hard feelings — just a little bleeding — since "the Race doesn't decide how hairy we are."

The Amazing Race concluded its 18th season and second all-star season with two back-to-back episodes that ended in the Florida Keys with the $1 million prize going to sisters Jen and Kisha Hoffman. The Globetrotters came in second, followed by father/daughter team Gary and Mallory. Friends Zev and Justin were knocked out in the penultimate leg. Jen and Kisha won having performed consistently, if unmemorably, this entire season. They're the second all-female team to win,...

After five continents, 23 cities, 40,000 miles, some ridiculous kangaroo suits, plates of greasy wiener schnitzel, and Kent’s unbelievably terrifying eyebrows, The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business reached its conclusion Sunday night with an intermittently tense, occasionally emotional finale.
The opening hour took the competitors from Switzerland to Rio de Janeiro, where the field was winnowed down from four teams to three. The leg started out poorly for Flight Time and Big Easy, who missed a train connection thanks to a sluggish cab driver, giving a 30-minute head start to the three remaining teams. But things quickly went Cape Horn-level south for...

Great cast, great beginning, slow ending.
Compared to the previous seventeen seasons, this was probably the best season we’ve ever seen. Teams like Flight Time and Big Easy, Jet and Cord, Zev and Justin and Gary and Mallory carried the show. Watching them race was high entertainment from start to finish.
Unlike Survivor, however, The Amazing Race is as much a product of the course that is laid out as it is of the people who race it. No matter how entertaining the people are, if the course is not dynamic, there’s only so much the racers can do.
The start of The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business was chock full of dynamic challenges, interesting legs and surprises. As the number of teams got whittled down, the legs became less creative. By the second hour of the finale, the last leg of the race, we watched a leg where...
