There's a lot at stake with the release this Friday of "Noah," and not just for the filmmakers or the studio that sunk a reported $160 million into the film.
In a year when Hollywood is releasing several Bible-inspired movies, "Noah" has become the test case for a number of issues -- whether Hollywood can earn the trust of fundamentalist Christians (and whether it's worth risking money and controversy even to try), whether it's possible to make big-budget spectacles that please both religious viewers and secular action-film fans, and whether directors can make Bible-themed movies that adhere to doctrine without compromising artistically or making dull propaganda.
It would be easy to see this saga as a story of just two players. On the one side is Hollywood, represented here by "Noah" studio Paramount, which would like to attract Christian viewers, and which has practically bent over backward to do so, testing...

Breaking: Lois Smith, one of New York’s longtime top publicists and an architect of the PR powerhouse Pmk, passed away this afternoon at 2 Pm after suffering a brain hemorrhage. She was 85. Smith represented the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Robert Redford, Martin Scorsese, Robert Altman, Meryl Streep, Whitney Houston and Rosie O’Donnell. Smith had accompanied her husband, Gene, to Maine where he was to receive an award for his fundraising on behalf of his alma mater Hebron Academy. They had checked into a bed and breakfast and, after she got up late last night, she tripped and fell down the stairs. Improved audio quality will be coming to Xbox Live. Microsoft has said that it won't change Xbox Live with the arrival of PlayStation Plus. General manager of Xbox Live Studios Jerry Johnson told Eurogamer that its plan "hasn't changed" since the arrival of Sony's premium service, which provides early access to demos, betas and games on top of free online play.
