Train to the End of the World is a show about four high school girls boarding a train to find their friend in Ikebukuro. It is also deeply weird. Thanks to an apocalyptic event, Japan is full of talking sun bears, golf ball storms, mushroom people and a town of angry two-legged goats. Our heroes receive daily support via morse code from a man who can only speak coherently for five minutes after putting on a conductor’s hat. He is assisted by a guinea pig that used to be somebody’s human grandmother. Daydreaming So Vividly About Our Spanish Holidays is now showing exclusively on Mubi in the series Here Comes the Sun: Summer on Film.I had the desire to write a fairy tale based on the rituals of adolescence and its deeply transformative moments, delving into the euphoric highs and the profound lows; a tale about abandon and escapism through the lens of magic realism. In recent summers, it’s become a viral practice for European young people to jump off their hotel balconies while on holidays in Spain, and to even record it with their phones to post the footage online later. I found, in this practice, a way to channel my obsession with how there are things in front of our eyes that could potentially be magical and have a spiritual depth, yet which we are unable to understand. It’s tragic to see young people play with death like that; then again,...

Remember back in September when Slitterhead developer Bokeh Game Studio teased something with Junji Ito? While it doesn’t appear that Ito will be involved with Slitterhead, we get the next best thing with Ito sitting down with Bokeh Game Studio head Keiichiro Toyama for an episode of “Golden Hour”, Bokeh’s series of sit-down chats with video game devs. The chat with Ito has him looking back at his inspirations, his views on horror and the manga medium.
Toyama kicks things off by noting that he and Ito haven’t met since they were on a panel together when Toyama had just released Forbidden Siren (which was 20 years ago). He also remarked how he has read Ito’s works since they first came out, and that he still does to this day. “I feel that your work remains so consistent,” says Toyama. “In my case, I feel that I...

Out of all the classic monsters that pop up in costume shops around the Halloween season, there’s one that I believe has always been criminally underused in scary movies. Unlike witches, vampires and undead ghouls, the lowly Scarecrow is usually relegated to the background of mainstream horror media despite serving as an instantly recognizable (and genuinely eerie) harbinger of Autumn.
That’s not to say that we haven’t seen memorable examples of these ever-watching fiends in scary movies before – I just wish that there were more of them! World of Horror is one of the strangest experiences I’ve played this year. From developer panstasz, World of Horror markets itself as a combination of the works of Junji Ito, H.P. Lovecraft, and ’80s text-based adventures. I’m admittedly a fan of all of those things but very rarely are any of them pulled off with an inkling of success in modern gaming. So with an open mind I booted up World of Horror and was met with the most unexpected gaming experience.
Visually, World of Horror is a lot to take in. The game employs a 1 or 2-bit art style that instantly evokes feelings of booting up a game from a floppy disk. From here I was overwhelmed with menus upon menus upon more menus. Thankfully choosing the “normal” difficulty activates a brief but intuitive tutorial that walks you through every element of the user interface. Before I knew it,...

Brooklyn’s biggest horror film festival was back for another year of terrifying horror features from across the globe.
A strong mix of feature films, horror shorts, and revered genre classics were shown to sold-out audiences. There was even a sneak preview of Paramount+’s Stephen King prequel project, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, that once again proved to audiences that sometimes dead is, in fact, better. Some of the biggest movies to come out of 2023’s Brooklyn Horror Film Festival are already set to premiere on Shudder and Tubi, but the festival’s entire schedule should be mandatory viewing for curious genre fans.
Some of this year’s standout Bhff entries include Property, a Brazilian home invasion horror film that becomes a brutal deconstruction of class and status. Laborers revolt when they learn that their livelihood is being taken away from them, which confines their target to an armored car and progressively removes her options.

Back in 2019, it was announced that Adult Swim‘s Toonami was teaming up with Production I.G. for a four part animated mini-series adaptation of Junji Ito’s horror manga Uzumaki – an animated mini-series that would be presented in black and white, just like the manga source material. A couple years later, a teaser trailer arrived online… and then it was said that the premiere of the show had been delayed so director Hiroshi Nagahama and the production team could have more time to “replicate the quality of the intricate designs and detailed line work of Mr. Ito’s classic manga”. Adult Swim‘s mini-series “Uzumaki,” based on the supernatural horror manga by legendary author Junji Ito, was announced way back in 2019, and, as of a year ago, delayed with no Eta. A brand new trailer unveiled today at San Diego Comic-Con indicates that the upcoming series may be more than worth the wait.
Check out the eerie new trailer below with stunning animation that seeks to capture Junji Ito’s nightmarish art style.
No release date has been announced just yet, but the unveiling of the new trailer means that we’re one step closer to seeing what madness Adult Swim and Junji Ito have in store.
Written and illustrated by Ito, the original manga series told the story of the citizens of Kurōzu-cho, a fictional city that is plagued by a supernatural curse involving spirals.

My to-be-read pile is shamefully big, but that never stops me from adding more. I cherish getting lost in a good book, but a novel is more of a commitment than chipping away at movies on my to-watch list. The conspicuously titled 101 Horror Books to Read Before You’re Murdered may make that stack of books to read even more intimidating, but it also helps narrow down which tales of terror are worthy of being moved to the top.
Following a foreword by Bird Box author Josh Malerman, writer Sadie “Mother Horror” Hartmann explains why you should trust her choices implicitly. As the owner of the horror fiction subscription service Night Worms and the editor-in-chief of publisher Dark Hart Books, she’s an unassailable authority on horror literature — even if she’s a self-proclaimed scaredy cat who rarely watches genre movies.

With the exception of genre masters like Junji Ito, anime and manga aren’t exactly the most horror-friendly mediums out there. However, from the Cenobite-inspired God Hand of Berserk to the near-Lovecraftian archeology of Made in Abyss, there’s no denying that Japanese artists often manage to sneak in some unexpected scares into their work.
And with decades of Japanese animation to choose from, there are bound to be at least a few oddball productions likely to satisfy audiences with a craving for animated frights. With that in mind, we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six of the best anime for horror fans, as not all nightmares have to be in live-action!
While this list is obviously based on personal opinion, we’ll only be considering Japanese productions as proper “anime,” which means no Western animations like Netflix’s Castlevania! With that out of the way,...

The series’ producers confirmed that the series is still in the works with an update at this year’s Anime Expo, Anime News Network reports.
At the Production I.G. x Wit Studio panel that took place over the weekend, Production I.G. USA President Maki Terashima-Furuta reassured fans that “Uzumaki” is still in the works, and “any news that it’s canceled should only be believed if it comes directly from her mouth.”
While that was the only mention of the adaptation at the panel, manga creator Junji Ito is a confirmed guest at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, which brings great potential for a more substantial update soon.

We could always use more output from Akira Yamaoka, and we don’t have to wait for Slitterhead or the upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake to get it. Developer Atelier Qdb’s upcoming psychological horror title Decarnation, which features music from Yamaoka, will be arriving on the Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam on May 31.
Alongside publisher Shiro Unlimited, Atelier Qdb announced that Decarnation will feature 10 tracks from the composer.
“I am delighted to have been able to take part in Decarnation‘s development, which draws its inspiration from works that are extremely dear to me, such as Moju: The Blind Beast by Edogawa Rampo,” said Yamaoka. “It is one of my favorite novels and has inspired many of my personal creations. In many ways, Decarnation reminds me of this work, and I have developed a special connection with this game. I sincerely hope that players will enjoy it as much as I do!

Video games may not be as well respected as other narrative artforms, but it’s only a matter of time before mainstream media begins to regard these interactive experiences with the same prestige as film and television. Fortunately, there are some artistic pioneers from other areas that have already recognized the creative potential of gaming, and this is especially true when it comes to the horror genre.
With so many genre filmmakers choosing to support interactive digital art, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six times that masters of horror contributed to videogames. After all, from famous writers to big-name directors, there are plenty of examples of multimedia collaboration in gaming.
As usual, we’ll be abiding by a couple of rules. First, we’ll only be including masters of horror that don’t specialize in videogames (that means no Shinji Mikami!). Second, the contribution has...

Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 4
“Just don’t let your chance slip away…”
Demon Slayer knows how to celebrate action and it’s in the middle of a major clash against multiple top-tier tyrants. Demon Slayer has approached big battles from unique angles and the intensified feud against Hantengu and Gyokko continues to defy expectations. In “Thank You, Tokito,” the Demon Slayers are divided in distinct battle plans, but just because they’re physically separated doesn’t mean that their swords don’t symbolically swing in tandem with every strike.
Hantengu’s Upper Rank underlings fire off a myriad of Demon Blood Arts that include sonic sound blasts, high-velocity gusts of wind, and electrically-charged staffs. Alternatively, the heroes each rely upon their own eclectic tactics – prayer, strategy, and experimentation – that allow them to individually excel before they all come together as a united front to...

Whether starring in a meme that breaks the internet, plotting world domination or using your lap as a mattress, cats will never lose their status as some of our favorite companions.
The Japanese often see cats as meowing omens of good luck. They can also be protectors of humans. This is why it should be no surprise that felines are everywhere in anime, with or without magical powers, and often based on creatures of myth and legend. Some are straight out of folklore, like the mischievous bakeneko and shapeshifting nekomata, while others come from space or the netherworld. Then there are those which are just cats without any supernatural powers. Their level of cuteness still has power over us.
Mischievous or magical, clawing or cuddly, these are some of our favorite anime cats that we wish could follow us home.

Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 3
“Because helping others eventually ends up being good for me.”
“Demon” is a term that gets thrown around a lot in anime, but right from the start of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba there’s never been any doubt that this series’ take on these monsters doesn’t hold back. There are dozens of battle shonen series that set up clear trajectories where various tiers of demons must be defeated. However, Demon Slayer makes sure that its monsters aren’t just frightening foes, but rather uniquely vexing villains that are legitimately challenging to defeat. Demon Slayer has evolved far beyond the point where decapitations or blade impalings mark the end of a battle. If anything, these drastic acts have become foreplay for the greater difficulties that the Upper Rank Demons pose. “A Sword from Over 300 Years Ago” reminds the...

There is a lot to be said about consuming a long-run manga series, spending years following the exploits of your favorite characters, and seeing your collection grow. Many of the titles with the most accolades manage to weave these long expansive stories that make them fan favorites and generate a lot of conversation within the fandom.
However, single-volume manga offers its benefits and the often under-touted format forces its creators to make a strong impact within the confines of a short narrative story. Personally, these shorter series make up some of my all-time favorite reads as well as act as perfect starting points to recommend to others who are interested in the medium but are unwilling to commit to dozens of volumes. Furthermore, these titles are ideal for revisits, casual re-reads on a nice day outside, or lounging at home.

For genre fans who grew up in the 1980s and ’90s, Fangoria will always be one of the biggest names in horror. While under control of various owners, the Fangoria brand has weaved in and out of the movie world over the decades – and the latest iteration of Fangoria launched Fangoria Studios in 2021 “to develop and produce film, television and podcasts.” Now Variety reports that Fangoria Studios is developing a live-action feature film adaptation of the manga Bloodsucking Darkness, created by Junji Ito, with The Haunting of Hill House writer Jeff Howard working on the screenplay. The search for a director is now underway.
Apparently also known as Blood Slurping Darkness, Ito’s manga is a twisted vampire story that centers on a young woman who develops an eating disorder after her boyfriend breaks up with her. She meets a boy who is concerned about her weight loss… and then...

Following their collaboration on Apache Delivery Service, the creative trio of Matt Kindt, Tyler Jenkins, and Hilary Jenkins are reteaming for the horror comic book miniseries Hairball, centered on an increasingly dysfunctional family and the cat that may (or may not) be the source of their destruction.
Ahead of the first issue's release this April through Kindt's Flux House imprint at Dark Horse Comics, we've been provided with an exclusive reveal of the cover art for the fourth issue, as well as a look at the fur-lined cover for the upcoming trade paperback release of Hairball!
Here's what Matt Kindt had to say about Hairball and its uniquely unsettling trade paperback cover:
I want Hairball to be an uncomfortable book, but in an entertaining way.
This is a book about the slow disintegration of a family. It's also about a possibly supernatural cat that seems to be at the center of it all.

The first word people use to describe Akihiro Higuchi’s Uzumaki is “twisted”—appropriate for a horror film in which an obsession with spirals overtakes a small town with surreal consequences. Higuchi, better known as “Higuchinsky”, based his film on a popular manga written by Junji Ito in 1998 which spawned two successful video games. An animated version has been announced by Adult Swim.

Junji Ito is undoubtedly a mastermind of the macabre. Merging his own monsters with Japanese folklore and tentacles of Lovecraftian inspiration, Ito’s graphic novels, such as Gyo and Uzumaki, have gripped horror fans worldwide with claws of fear. The things that creep in the darkest alleys of his imagination will easily take up residence in the back of your head rent-free—if they don’t devour your brains first.
Netflix’s Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre is the J-horror answer to Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, an anthology that is haunted by everything from restless spirits to undead entities that only appear human. Ito’s stories are just as unsettling in anime form as they are in manga. While they are all nightmare fuel, some of them might leave you with one eye open at night while others will have you sleeping with the light on for weeks.

Eighteen tales of terror from the master of horror manga, “Junji Ito Maniac” offers a variety of stories from the iconic creator including recognizable characters such as Tomie and Soichi. This is the second collection of his works put into a series, with 2018 ‘The Junji Ito Collection” taking a similar structure of presenting a broad range of stories in the mangaka’s repertoire.
The work of Junji Ito has made him one of the most recognizable names in manga, with his tales of metaphysical horror and cosmic absurdity striking a chord with readers across the world. Unsurprisingly, this has led to many efforts to adapt his work to other mediums, notably anime and live-action. While many of these endeavors have gained favor with the fandom, it is undeniable that these projects have to be removed from the source material.
