Word of a remake of John Carpenter's 1986 bonkers action flick "Big Trouble in Little China" came out as early as 2015. The remake was set to star Dwayne Johnson, presumably playing Jack Burton, the character previously played by Kurt Russell. Johnson reportedly wanted John Carpenter to be involved in the remake, but the director was never officially invited to anything. "I only know what I read in the papers," he said. Carpenter has been famously indifferent to other filmmakers remaking his movies, once saying that he loves it when it happens, as he gets paid for not having to do anything. Three years later, in 2018, it was announced that the new "Big Trouble" would be a sequel and not a remake, but such definitions have become hazy in a nostalgia-driven marketplace. The film's producer, Hiram Garcia, referred to the new film as a "continuation," rather than a sequel. Po-tay-to, po-tah-to.

The main gag of John Carpenter's 1986 fantasy flick "Big Trouble in Little China" is that the sidekick seems to think he's the main character. The main character of the story is Wang Chi (Dennis Dun), a restaurant owner who cannot wait to meet his fiancée Miao Yin (Suzee Pai). Miao Yin, however, is kidnapped by the Lords of Death, a San Francisco street gang. Wang follows them to Chinatown hoping to rescue his fiancée, only to discover that she was passed to David Lo Pan (James Hong), an ancient Chinese sorcerer who aims to sacrifice her on a magical alter and break a ghostly curse he suffers from. Wang gathers old friends, each of them possessing knowledge of magic and ancient Chinese sorcery, to trek into the magical underworld in order to defeat Lo Pan and rescue Miao Yin.

The Dragon Ball franchise has amassed a large fanbase over the years and Hollywood had its eye on adapting the popular franchise in live-action. There were a lot of expectations and with the negative track record of manga adaptations on the big screen, it was a big responsibility that 20th Century Fox and director James Wong took with the film.

Unfortunately, Dragonball Evolution was widely panned when it was released, with fans finding nothing redeeming about the project. Years later, the film’s writer Ben Ramsey apologized to fans for letting them down and acknowledged that he went onto the project for financial reasons and not as a fan of the franchise.

Cuddly Kung Fu master Po the Panda returns to the big screen for a fourth instalment of the animated action comedy franchise, eight years after Kung Fu Panda 3. Unfortunately, it’s fair to say that the law of diminishing returns has very much kicked in, because while the film is entirely amiable, it doesn’t quite deliver the same punch, and frequently feels like it’s going through the motions.
The film begins in the Valley of Peace, where Po (Jack Black) is content with his life as the legendary Dragon Warrior, occasionally defeating the odd villain with his sweet kung-fu skills and using his standing in the community to open a tofu-and-noodle shop.

Since Van Damme and Seagal hit big in the late 80s and early 90s, martial artists started to come out of the woodwork with their own unique brand. As we’ve covered recently on Reel Action, Van Damme collaborator Sheldon Lettich attempted to introduce audiences to both the style of Capoeira and the star power of Mark Dacascos in Only the Strong. Another martial artist that tried his hand at the action title and came away with a cult following was Jeff Speakman as he demonstrated his Kenpo skills in the 1991 film The Perfect Weapon.

Following Kung Fu Panda 4’s kick-ass start through its first two weekends, the DreamWorks franchise made its way to a pretty major milestone. With four titles under the renowned franchise banner, the animated films have now surpassed the $2B mark at the box office. But while this achievement turned out to be groundbreaking for DreamWorks, it simultaneously created a huge obstacle for Timothée Chalamet’s Dune 2.

Jack Black is "ready" for a 'School of Rock' sequel. The 54-year-old actor played rocker-turned-music teacher Dewey Finn in the 2003 comedy film and he's now declared he's keen to reprise the role for a follow-up and he's even come up with a potential title inspired by 1984 musical sequel 'Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo'.He told Joe: "I wish there’d be a 'School of Rock 2 Electric Boogaloo'. I’m ready."However, Black admitted he would only consider returning for a second film if original writer Mike White returns to pen the script, but he may be waiting some time because White is busy working on his 'White Lotus' TV series which he created, writes and directs.Black added: "You know Mike White wrote the first one and he’s a genius. And we’d have to have Mike White back in the saddle, but he’s real busy right now with 'White Lotus',...

March 17, 1951 was a great day in history, because that the day Kurt Russell entered the world. And while he would go on to become one of the biggest icons of the eighties and nineties, many folks don’t know that Russell started as a child star for Disney, even acting opposite his future life partner Goldie Hawn in The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band (1968). From the sixties into the seventies, he starred in Disney flicks like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), but as the studio’s movies started to flop and Russell got older, a change of pace was needed. Arguably, Russell’s career took off when he began working with director John Carpenter, with the first movie being 1979’s TV movie Elvis, but what are Kurt Russell’s best movies? To celebrate his 73rd birthday, let’s dig into them here.

Filmmaker Mike Mitchell saw ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ as an opportunity to direct a story that deviates from its predecessors while maintaining the essence of the beloved franchise. Having been involved in Po’s journey since the beginning, Mitchell viewed this installment as a chance to helm the director’s chair and tell a fresh tale.
Reflecting on his vision for the film, Mitchell aimed to reconnect with the charm that captivated audiences in the original film while raising the bar for thrills and spectacle. He sought to remind viewers of what made the first ‘Kung Fu Panda’ great while infusing the story with new levels of action and excitement.
To achieve this, Mitchell and his team explored innovative camera techniques, drawing inspiration from live-action films to bring dynamic energy to the animated world. They aimed to create a larger-than-life experience with grander scale, more humour, and exhilarating action sequences.

Jack Black’s Po is back after nearly a decade, and he’s already receiving a hero’s welcome from audiences.
Kung Fu Panda 4 opened to a stellar $58.3 million domestically, well ahead of expectations and a near-series best in a win for the family marketplace, as well as for DreamWorks Animation and parent company Universal (the studio behind Sunday’s Academy Awards frontrunner Oppenheimer). The only other Kung Fu Panda installment to open higher was the first one in 2008 with $62 million, not adjusted for inflation.
Along with Black, returning members of the Kung Fu Panda 4 voice cast include Dustin Hoffman as Kung Fu master Shifu, James Hong as Po’s adoptive father, Bryan Cranston as Po’s birth father Li and Ian McShane as Shifu’s former student and arch-nemesis.

It’s been nearly three months since an animated wide release hit theaters, the last being Illumination’s “Migration” over the holidays. That’s a little bit frightening, but with some expert timing “Kung Fu Panda 4” has arrived, benefitting from a lack of competition for family audiences to score some strong numbers in its debut.
Universal’s animated action comedy film kicked off to $19.4 million from 4,035 theaters across its opening day and preview screenings. That’s the strongest opening day for the series since the 2008 original nabbed $20 million on its first day, on its way to a $60.2 million total across the three-day frame. This new fourth entry won’t reach those heights, projecting an opening of $55 million, but it’ll come in ahead of the figures earned by the 2010 sequel ($47.6 million) and 2016 threequel ($41.2 million).

You can’t keep the Dragon Warrior down; Kung Fu Panda 4 is off to a promising start at the box office as it has grossed $3.8 million in Thursday night previews. Not bad, Po. Not bad at all.
The box office projections for Kung Fu Panda 4 are shaping up to be the second-best opening weekend of the entire franchise with $52 million. That would help it take the number one spot from Dune: Part Two, which is expected to take in $41 million. The Thursday night preview number is also the best opening for a Dreamworks Animation title since How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, which opened to a $3 million preview take. Speaking of Dune: Part Two, the acclaimed sequel will finish the week with a domestic take of $111 million, putting it over the first movie’s entire domestic run of $108.8 million.

A new chapter in the “Kung Fu Panda” saga has been unleashed upon movie patrons. This film is accurately called Kung Fu Panda 4 and comes eight years after 2016’s Kung Fu Panda 3. This adventure, however, seems to be less a solid entry in the series and more of an example of the law of diminishing returns as it enjoys its best moments harkening back to earlier films in the series.
Po (Jack Black) faces his most difficult challenge yet as he is told he must retire from fighting as the Dragon Warrior and focus on more spiritual endeavors. For Po, however, this is problematic for two reasons: 1) first, he does not feel qualified to ascend to any sort of spiritual leadership and instead prefers to stick to “kicking butt” and, 2) he must find and train an apprentice to replace himself as the new Dragon Warrior to protect the Valley of Peace.

The affable, karate-chopping, dumpling-loving panda Po is back for his next big challenge – to find and train his replacement – in DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4, the latest addition to its animated film franchise. As the film opens, Po (voiced by Jack Black) is in the middle of taking down a new big baddie from the sea and saving some residents of the Valley of Peace. After triumphantly capturing the giant sea creature, Po is once again cheered and applauded.
Returning home to help his two dads, Ping (voiced by James Hong) and Li (voiced by Bryan Cranston), with their restaurant, Po hears about a new threat to the valley. A sorceress called The Chameleon (voiced by Viola Davis), because she’s a small lizard that can shapeshift into any creature, is determined to wreak havoc on the town.

Tenacious D have unveiled a full music video for their cover of Britney Spears‘ “…Baby One More Time.” The song appears in the closing credits to the new movie Kung Fu Panda 4, and the star-studded video was filmed on the red carpet of the film’s premiere at AMC The Grove in Los Angeles.
Previously, Tenacious D’s Jack Black (who voices the lead role of Po Ping in the Kung Fu Panda movies) and Kyle Gass posted a short social clip of them dancing and lip-syncing to their version of the song. That clip has gone super viral with more than 55 million views on TikTok.
Now, they’ve rolled out the full music video, featuring Black and Gass bringing the hilarity to the red carpet, as they strut around and engage in hijinks with the likes of Dustin Hoffman, Bryan Cranston, Awkwafina, Ke Huy Quan, and James Hong.

Jack Black and Kyle Gass took over the Kung Fu Panda 4 premiere to film an impromptu music video for Tenacious D’s cover of — wait for it — Britney Spears’ classic, “…Baby One More Time.”
In the clip, Black and Gass strut around the red carpet, doing dance moves and jump-kicking while belting along to the D’s hard rock take on the 1998 pop smash. Black also ropes in a bunch of his Kung Fu Panda 4 castmates, dancing with Awkwafina, karate-chopping Bryan Cranston, and taking a punch from Ke Huy Quan.

Review: Kung Fu Panda 4 is pretty standard fare for a new movie in a franchise that’s gone inactive. Watching Kung Fu Panda 4, I couldn’t help but think of Cars 3 or Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, which were both “passing the torch” sequels that didn’t really work out that way. Cars 3 all but ended the franchise; while Ghost Protocol was so badass, people fell in love with Tom Cruise all over again, making the notion of him passing on his franchise to a would-be-successor (in that case Jeremy Renner) ludicrous. All that is to say Kung Fu Panda 4 does the usual thing for a long-awaited sequel, with the movie designed...

The fourth installment of the animated martial arts movie Kung Fu Panda will be released after nearly eight years. The third installment, which was released in 2016, was long before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. The computer-animated comedy film is one of the most successful animated movie series.
That being said, Dune: Part Two‘s Sandworms have a fair amount of competition on their second outing this weekend as Kung Fu Panda 4 will be vying for the first spot at the domestic box office. Family movie lovers are not getting rid of the panda anytime soon as it has been teased that Kung Fu Panda 5 will happen.

Since we’re nearly into Spring Break season for students, the studios are gearing up to release some sequels (usually a Summer staple). I suppose you could consider last weekend’s Dune: Part Two a sequel, though it’s really the conclusion of the original story. Ah, but this weekend’s big studio release is the latest entry in a “tentpole”, a franchise that’s now a teenager (sweet sixteen). Plus it’s an “all-ages” series with a”PG” rating that parents are always searching for (he’s been Mia at the multiplex for eight years now). It’s not from the “Mouse House”, but rather their biggest animation rival for a time. And this was the character they created that truly worked for me (I’m not a fan of the look of the big green ogre’s exploits). Watch out, and hold on to your snacks, as Master Po is back,...

Skadoosh! One week after Jack Black and Kyle Gass’ 20-second clip where they animatedly performed “Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears went viral on multiple platforms, the duo — known together as Tenacious D — have put out a longer recording of the song.
Dropped on Black’s social media accounts, the minute-and-a-half-long track is accompanied by a music video that was shot at the Kung Fu Panda 4 premiere in Los Angeles. The full, three-minute version of the song is now on Spotify.
In the video, Black wears a black and white panda-inspired suit, dances and does karate moves with various members of the Kung Fu Panda cast and crew, including Awkwafina, Bryan Cranston, James Hong, Ke Huy Quan, along with his friend Gass. Kung Fu Panda star Po also makes several appearances. Black, of course, puts his own hard rock spin on the song, a vocal style he became known...

The "Kung Fu Panda" franchise has become a staple of DreamWorks Animation, and it's easy to see why: It's a funny movie series with great action and memorable characters.
A big part of the series' success is due to its stellar voice casting -- heard in both the extended cast of A-listers like Dustin Hoffman and James Hong, as well as in Jack Black's electrifying performance as Po the Panda. Black infuses the character with charisma and, as Po would call it, awesomeness. As our review indicates, "Kung Fu Panda 4" changes things up, becoming more of a buddy cop movie with Po going on an adventure with a new character named Zhen, played by Awkwafina.
/Film was invited to participate in a junket with Black and Awkwafina, where the plan was to ask questions about the making of the film and crafting their performances.

There’s a running gag in Kung Fu Panda 4 about Po (Jack Black) needing to workshop more profound words of wisdom if he’s going to be a spiritual leader. It’s easy to read it as a meta commentary on the series itself wanting for more depth if it’s going to continue moving forward. The film is a good time, and it doesn’t exactly betray any of Kung Fu Panda’s strengths, but it also exhibits the telltale signs of a series struggling to justify its existence.
In fairness, the sense that Po’s talents might be better utilized elsewhere—like, say, in one of the three (!) Netflix cartoons based on the films—is baked into the plot here, with Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) telling Po that the time has come to choose a new Dragon Master so that he may spread enlightenment to the rest of his valley.

Kim Kardashian, Lisa Rinna, Salma Hayek, Cher, Saweetie, Julia Fox and Ashley Park were just some of the celebs who flocked to Paris at the beginning of March for Paris Fashion Week. Sam Smith even walked in the Vivienne Westwood show, where they went almost unrecognizable in a booty-baring ensemble.

And, of course, Hollywood was gearing up for the Academy Awards with plenty of Oscar-related celebrating and toasting. (You can see plenty of those photos here.)

Po (Jack Black), the sad-clown-eyed, dude-speaking, dumpling-loving, dumpling-shaped whirling dervish of the “Kung Fu Panda” films, has a word to describe his favorite martial-arts move. More than that, it describes the exalted state inside him as he executes it. The word is “skadoosh.” Early on in “Kung Fu Panda 4,” Po is in the middle of a combat training moment when he asks, “Where’s the skadoosh?” It’s a meaningful question, because what he’s really saying is: You can fight all you want, but without the skadoosh, what’s the point?

Animated film franchises have a way of making you feel old. When you watch live-action movie series featuring your favorite stars over a period of many years, the actors at least have the grace to age along with their audiences. But the characters in animated movies tend to always look the same, as demonstrated by Po, the hero of Kung Fu Panda 4. As still delightfully voiced by Jack Black, he’s exactly the same big, furry lug that he was in the original film, which came out in, gulp, 2008.
Well, he’s a little different. He’s now been the Dragon Warrior for so long that his mentor, Shifu (Dustin Hoffman, sounding more gravelly than ever), orders him to relinquish his title and assume the role of Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace. Po, who’s preoccupied with starting his own noodle restaurant, resists at first, but ultimately...

A-list actors taking on vocal work for animated films has always been an uneven trend, with the results ranging from genuine greatness to utter tedium. But while many actors who lend their voices to Pixar or DreamWorks releases often seem to just be in it for the easy paycheck, the same can’t be said of Jack Black, who seems physically incapable of not giving 100 percent in any film. As the villainous Bowser, he was the saving grace of the otherwise forgettable “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” delivering hammy line readings that chewed up and spit out that computer-generated, Nintendo-focused-grouped scenery.
In his most famous voice-acting role, as Po in Dreamworks’ “Kung Fu Panda” movie series, Black’s charm and enthusiasm elevated an entire trilogy single-handedly. From its 2008 original film to the trilogy capper in 2016, the “Kung Fu Panda” movies — set in an animal-run, wuxia-inspired ancient China, and following nerdy...

Since its debut in 2008, DreamWorks’ kickass charmer Po, aka Kung Fu Panda, has racked up nearly $2 billion at the global box office over the course of three films, the most recent being eight years ago. A lot has changed in the world of animation in that time as well as in the life of Po, as witnessed by the storyline screenwriters have cooked up for this rich and energetic fourth entry into the franchise. Visually, this one tops them all, and pound for pound the whole movie from director Mike Mitchell, taking the helm of the Kfp series for the first time, is another winner bound to add to the impressive legacy of this lovable Chinese bear.

Timothée Chalamet has been the star of the box office this week as his sci-fi epic Dune: Part Two has had a dream run. The film was released on March 1 to overwhelmingly positive reviews, with Chalamet’s performance as Paul Atreides being lauded along with director Denis Villeneuve’s vision. The film has reportedly earned $189 million worldwide.
However, the film is under threat of losing its No.1 spot as the upcoming week will see the release of the animated film Kung Fu Panda 4. The legacy sequel will see Jack Black return to the role of Po after eight years. Despite the mixed reviews from critics for the film, Kung Fu Panda is projected to give stiff competition to Dune: Part Two as it attracts family audiences.

Jack Black thinks 'Kung Fu Panda 4' is the franchise's "funniest" movie yet.The 54-year-old star reprises his role as Po in the animated flick and thinks that an all-star cast that features Awkwafina, Viola Davis and Dustin Hoffman makes it the best film in the martial arts series so far.Jack told The Hollywood Reporter at the film's Los Angeles premiere on Sunday (03.03.24): "I think it's the funniest of the four, and it's action-packed. "Our new cast members are insanely talented – Awkwafina is amazing, Viola Davis as the villain is, as usual, incredible, and my two dads, James Hong and Bryan Cranston."Everyone just kills it and it's so fun to be back, because the last 'Kung Fu Panda' was 2016. How long has that been, eight years? So it's really exciting to be back on a horsey blowing people's minds again; I can't wait for everyone to see it.

Eight years after the release of the third film in the Kung Fu Panda franchise, Jack Black is back for a fourth go-around — and this time, he is bringing his musical side to the movie.
Last week, Black posted a cover of Britney Spears’ hit song “Baby One More Time” on his social media, showcasing him singing and dancing alongside Kyle Gass, with whom he performs in their band Tenacious D. The caption simply read “Tenacious B!” but included a panda emoji, suggesting the song would be a part of Kung Fu Panda 4.
At the Los Angeles premiere of the film Sunday, Black told reporters that the cover is featured in the film’s end credits, and that came about when director Mike Mitchell “said, ‘Hey, we would love to have a Tenacious D song for the end credits’ and I was like, ‘Really? Can we do Britney Spears?...
