Academy Award-winning visionary filmmaker Kevin Costner directs New Line Cinema’s vast Horizon: An American Saga Chapters One and Two, a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. A story of America too big for one film, this true cinematic event also stars Costner, who co-writes with Jon Baird (The Explorers Guild) and produces through his Territory Pictures.
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

From the beginning “Ozark” star Julia Garner was eager to play Ruth Langmore because of “how complex she was.” A teenage crook who comes from a long line of career criminals, Ruth is desperate to escape her desolate life in a Missouri trailer park. So when Chicago financial planner Marty Byrd (Jason Bateman) enlists her to help him launder money for a vicious cartel, she’s determined to prove herself capable. Watch our exclusive video interview with Garner above.

Ruth struggles to gain acceptance, be it from Byrd or her recently paroled father, Cade (Trevor Long). But she’s also trying to push her exceptionally bright cousin, Wyatt (Charlie Tahan), to go to college. Wyatt is “her rock,” says Garner. “Ruth never had stability in a way,” but her cousin provides her with that. That complicates things, however, when she has to kill his father,...

Production designer Derek R. Hill doesn’t like to show off in his work. “I want my sets to just blend in … and let the acting take hold,” he explains. It should feel “layered” and based in “character development.” So for “Ozark,” he wanted the props and set pieces to feel like they’d “been there for many years” to give the sense of a fully lived-in world. Simply put, “nothing new, nothing fancy.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Hill above.

Michel’le survived Compton – but it took the Lifetime movie “Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge & Michel’le” for her to realize it.
The one-time R&B star (1989’s “No More Lies”) dated Dr. Dre in the early 1990s, as he and N.W.A. turned into superstars (they had a son in 1991) and later married Death Row Records mogul Suge Knight, with whom she had a daughter in 2002 (they divorced in 2005).

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

"Bonnie and Clyde" ambushed Emmy voters on Friday night to discuss the ambitious miniseries that aired last December simultaneously on Lifetime, History and A&E. It's a good year for the production to compete, considering the previously combined categories for minis and movies were just separated, thus creating room for more contenders. "Bonnie and Clyde" got an early head start in the industry-awards derby by nabbing four guild nominations (sound, costumes and art direction) in January. Gold Derby not only recorded the event (listen to the audio podcast below), but I moderated the chat with director Bruce Beresford, stars Emile Hirsch and Lane Garrison, writers Joe Batteer and John Rice, plus Marilyn Vance (costumes), Derek Hill (art direction), Francis Kenny (cinematography) and John Debney (music). -Break- The gang reveals the meticulous work and research that went into recreating the outlaws' America of the 1930s (many scenes were shot...

The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found...

They're not the Oscars, but it's still good that there are awards for the people who make our television and film experiences so visually stunning. The Art Directors Guild has just announced the nominees for its 2012 awards.
The Guild honors production designers in television, film and advertising, dividing each medium into distinct categories. The result is that some productions not used to getting a lot of awards love do in fact get mentioned.
Take "Community" for example. While you'd be hard-pressed to find a TV critic who doesn't think this is one of TV's best comedies, the show gets nominated for virtually zero awards. The Art Directors Guild, however, took notice when appropriate -- the bizarre, visually interesting and incredible "Pillows and Blankets" episode (a Zap2It pick for one of the best episodes of the year) is nominated.
Of course, lots of the usual suspects make the list as...

You would think fans and producers alike would have unanimously given up on the Halloween franchise following the financially and critically unsuccessful Halloween 2 by Rob Zombie. Yet, one fan who happens to also work in the industry as a production designer, set dresser, and art director, feels he can pull together “a fan film and a tribute piece to pay homage to this particular series of films” on a shoe-string budget. When I mean shoe-string, I mean the price of one of Johnny Depp’s meals while filming a Pirates of the Caribbean film. Derek Hill is set out to make an effective sequel to the franchise entitled Halloween: Vengeance for $500! Here’s what the inspired 30 yr. old has to say about the project.
This film is actually a remake of a film I did back in 2002. I remade the film just because I am a huge fan of “Halloween” and Michael Myers.

Well, he’s a 30 year-old indie filmmaker who’s produced an impressive 22 films on a minimal budget. Hill’s vision is to reinterpret Carpenter’s classic on a budget of $500,...
