A Special Forces operative suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder is discharged from the army due to his extreme medical condition. Finding employment as a security guard, his world is turned upside down when he finds himself embroiled in a different kind of urban war after a young woman seeks protection from a corrupt police death squad working for one of the most brutal drug cartels. At 96 years old, movie producer Roger Corman described himself as "semi-retired" in a 2022 interview with Paste, noting that he still has a deal to remake "Little Shop of Horrors" for Paramount Pictures. With a career spanning over 400 movies, which helped launch the careers of filmmakers like James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola, Corman has made just about every kind of genre movie under the sun -- including a video game movie starring Mark Hamill.
"Virtually Heroes" isn't a movie based on a video game, but rather a low-budget precursor to "Free Guy," starring Robert Baker and Brent Chase as two video game characters who are tired of dying over and over again. In a nod to his most famous role, Hamill plays a wise monk in brown robes who agrees to teach Baker's character "the cheat codes of life."

To begin with a personal anecdote:
From 2000 to 2003, this author worked as an intern for New Concorde, a.k.a. Concorde New Horizons, Roger Corman's production company. As an intern, most of my duties involved going into oil-scented basement rooms to find physical advertising assets for long-forgotten "Emmanuelle" sequels and early Ron Howard pictures. I also had the privilege of reading a myriad of scripts, as many B-movie hopefuls would mail drafts to the known lord of the format. After several years, I was finally offered a job. I was to be paid a very modest amount to work as a production assistant on a Stacy Keach war movie called "When Eagles Strike," directed by Cirio H. Santiago. While the exteriors were filmed in the Philippines, the indoor scenes were filmed in a tiny studio just off of Melrose Blvd. in Hollywood, CA. The studio was made up to...

Director and documentarian Mark Hartley scores both a film history and comedy success with this ‘wild, untold’ account of the 1980s film studio that was both revered and despised by everyone who had contact with it. The ‘cast list’ of interviewees is encyclopedic, everybody has a strong opinion, and some of them don’t need four-letter words to describe their experience!

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Drive-In Collection: Death Force / Vampire Hookers In Death Force, Doug Russell (James Iglehart) is a soldier on the way home to his wife and infant son, but when he runs afoul of two supposed friends he’s left for dead in the middle of the ocean. Luckily he washes up on an island beach where he’s found, nursed back to health, and trained in the way of the samurai by two Japanese soldiers unaware that their war (WWII) ended years prior. Vampire Hookers doesn’t really need a synopsis, does it? Vinegar Syndrome’s latest double feature of obscure drive-in favorites is one of the good ones thanks mostly to the first feature. At its core it’s a revenge flick, but the story touches and fight choreography make it a surprisingly good time...

Let’s try this: every week, we’ll put together a list of fan-favorited videos from the last week, judging simply by what’s been the most popular (and excluding any of last week’s new releases, which tend to tip the scales unfairly). So here they are, the top 5 most viewed Trailers From Hell commentaries for the week of March 18th.

Shout! Factory continue doing the Lord's work with their upcoming second Lethal Ladies Collection release. This time around, we take a look at two films from Lethal Ladies Vol. 1 veteran, Cirio Santiago, and the ever popular The Arena by Steve Carver. Shout! has done a marvelous job revisiting these titles and giving them the attention they deserve. This two-disc set is no exception. Each film is 80 minutes or less and there is no fat in sight, all killer, no filler, literally. I don’t recall having ever even heard of the 1978 horror comedy Vampire Hookers until seeing it mentioned in the awesome Filipino B-movie documentary Machete Maidens Unleashed. Something tells me Vampire Hookers cannot possibly be as amusing as its campy theme song.
While this T&A slapstick horror comedy starring John Carradine and Bruce Fairbairn about vampire hookers from the late B-movie maestro Cirio H. Santiago has somehow managed to escape my gaze over the years, the campy late-Seventies folk rock theme song that tells the story of this wacky slice of Filipinosploitation did not escape my ears. When your movie’s theme song contains lyrics along the lines of “Well, they’re vampire hookers, and blood is not all that they suck”, nothing else really needs to be said.

Jillian Kesner makes it hurt in Firecracker.
The Lethal Ladies Collection honors the strongest and sexiest celluloid heroines who kicked ass in the 1970s. If you saw any of these movies back then, it was probably in a drive-in or at a broken down theater on the outskirts of town…
The DVD set is a triple feature of action-crime-thriller grindhouse film favorites from Shout! Factory’s “Roger Corman Cult Classics” imprint.
The titles included in the set, all three R-rated and offering sizable portions of violence and nudity, are:
Firecracker (1981): The story of female karate champion Susanne Carter (Jillian Kesner), who’s in the Phillipines searching for her missing sister. As the most telling quote of Machete Maidens Unleashed! exclaims, “The stories are 10 times better than the actual films”. The anecdotes and memories of those involved in the Filipino exploitation genre of cinema are an amazing account of a period never to be repeated. Screening at the New York Asian Film Festival, Mark Hartley’s documentary opens our eyes to what went on in order to make some of the infamous cult schlock from the 1970s. Starting with Hemisphere Pictures and continuing into Roger Corman’s shingle, New World Pictures, the Philippines are shown as the jungle haven chock full of cheap production and expendable stunt men it was. We become privy to tales of directors, producers, and actors involved as well as a bevy of clips from their films to understand how the three B’s—blood, breasts, and beasts—created a sensation at American drive-ins across the nation.

When it was announced that Pa exploitation legend Cirio H. Santiago (Equalizer 2000, Future Hunters, and Dune Warriors) would helm another explosion ladden apocalypse flick for king of the Bs and long time producer, Roger Corman, the cult community went, not surprisingly, apeshit. Then disater struck the production when Santiago died during filming and Roger Corman put Jim Wynorski in to finish principal photography.
That was 2008. We've been told that the film is done, so where is it? All we've managed to track down form the finished film is this 9 second montage of finished clips - featuring muchas explosions and even a glimpse of Michael Madsen looking a little out of place.

"I know when most people go to see documentaries, they expect to learn something," said "Machete Maidens Unleashed" director Mark Hartley before the film's Fantastic Fest premiere. "If you expect to learn something, you should go outside and read a book for the next 85 minutes."
But a funny thing happened on the way to the Paramount - you do learn quite a bit about the Filipino exploitation films of the 1960s and '70s from Hartley's follow-up to his wildly entertaining history of the Australian exploitation film, "Not Quite Hollywood," even if it's not what you'd quite expect. Like that film, "Machete Maidens Unleashed" is often more fun than the films it tells the behind-the-scenes stories of since it freely uses the money shots and arrives bursting with energy to spare. At once, the film is a tribute to native Filipino directors Cirio Santiago, Bobby Suarez and Gerardo de Leon,...

Unbelievable. Un-fucking-believable. A new women in prison film (Wip for short) starring Karen Black, Mink Stole and one of the Go-Go's was shot less than two hours away from me and I didn't even know about it! I consider it a lost opportunity. I'm currently developing a nice, dark bruise on my left leg from kicking myself repeatedly with my right...
Stuck!, written and directed by Steve Balderson (Pep Squad, Firecracker), is a gorgeous, black-and-white noir character piece that feels less like an homage and more like a newly discovered classic in the babes-behind-bars genre. Whereas Barak Epstein's Prison A Go-go opted to go the route of parody (owing more to Troma than to, say, the late Cirio H. Santiago...

With news of Cirio H. Santiago's throwback to 80s post apocalyptic fare Road Raiders comes something not unexpected seeing as Pa films are now en vogue. According to Fangoria, Joe Davison (100 Tears) will write and direct Experiment 7 which starts production in March. Davison will star along with filmmaker Timo Rose, Rod Grant, Raine Brown, Jack Amos, Candice Rojas, Dwight Cenac, and Alan Rowe Kelly.
The story concerns Dr. Felix Copper, a scientist in a postapocalyptic world attempting to find a cure for the radiation poisoning that has blighted the planet. He runs into a couple of survivalists and then a supermodel-turned-weapons expert, and together they battle vicious mutants to try to save mankind.
Thanks to Avery for the heads up.
Stay tuned to Quiet Earth because we've got a real doozy on a piece of Pa news for you tomorrow.

Somewhere in my near future there is a post-apocalyptic all-nighter happening where I play nothing but the films of Cirio H. Santiago. Santiago's films have brought me much joy over the years and being able to share news of his ongoing love affair with our favorite genre will be missed around here. He was responsible for directing over 75 productions (many for Roger Corman) and producing even more. Recently, Santiago was working on a sequel to Stryker called Road Raiders. I haven't been able to track down any info on how his untimely death might affect the film's production but we'll be sure to keep you posted. Until then, head through the break where you'll find a whole bunch of clips and trailers from his work. I highly encourage you to take a break from your hectic day and dive into the crazy fun worlds of Cirio H. Santiago for a few minutes.

Post-apocalyptic impresario Cirio Santiago, perhaps responsible for more Mad Max-inspired madness than any other filmmaker, passed away on Friday, September 26th at the age of 72 from lung cancer. A veteran of the Roger Corman ranks, Santiago has been canonized by Quentin Tarantino (citing Santiago’s work as one of the many influences on his Kill Bill pictures) and was set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Film Academy of the Philippines next month.
He was currently in production on a sequel to one of his better know Max riffs, Stryker, to be titled Road Raiders. No word on whether and how that project may now be completed.
Why not track down a copy of Wheels of Fire or Future Hunters and pay tribute to a low-budget legend?...
