“Juvenile” marks the directorial debut of Takashi Yamazaki, one of Japan’s most popular filmmakers working today. While lacking originality, it’s charm makes for a commendable first effort. The project was conceived by Shirogumi, an animation and visual effects studio Yamazaki had worked for since 1986 and continues to collaborate with. Written and directed by him, it is his first collaboration with the visual effects company Robot Communications, who, like Shirogumi, he continues to work with frequently. While fairly obscure overseas, the feature was a hit for its native release and international premiere at the Gifoni Film Festival in Italy. The robot that appears in it, Tetra, has remained fairly popular in Japanese pop culture.
During the summer of 2000 in Japan, Yusuke and his friends encounter a peculiar finding in the woods while on a camping trip. They meet a small, friendly robot named Tetra sent from the future to...

Now that he’s officially become the very best, like no one ever was, Ash Ketchum is heading into retirement. The long-running and perpetually 10 year-old star of the beloved “Pokémon” anime will exit the series with an upcoming 11-episode run airing in Japan this January, the Pokémon Company announced Friday.
In his place, two new protagonists, Liko and Roy, will be introduced in a new series set in the Paldea region, first seen in this year’s Generation IX “Pokémon” games “Scarlet and Violet.” The series will premiere sometime later in 2023, and feature the starters from the game: Sprigatito (a grass cat), Fuecoco (a fire-breathing crocodile baby), and Quaxly (a water duck).
The news of Ash’s retirement from the anime comes a month after the Japanese airing of the 132nd episode of the “Pokémon Journeys” series, and the 1,217th episode of the anime overall, which saw Ash (voiced in...

Filmmaker Hideaki Anno is one of Japan’s most imaginative and creative filmmakers working today. Whether it be his superb anime show “Neon Genesis Evangelion” or his excellent film “Shin Godzilla,” the auteur director has made a reputation for himself with his stylish filmmaking mixed with emotional storytelling and social commentary. Early on, Anno directed very grounded and haunting pieces of Japanese cinema but with touches of his usual insanity present throughout his work. His first live-action feature, “Love & Pop,” tells a powerful tale of the bond between a group of school girls and raises awareness of disturbing taboos within Japanese society. Following this, Anno would truly show his talents as a filmmaker in his intimate and beautiful film “Shiki-Jitsu.”

The title of the movie translates to “Ritual” or “Ceremonial Day.” The project would be produced by Studio Kajino, a subsidiary of the popular animation company Studio Ghibli.

After 26 years, “Evangelion” is finally over, and all’s right with the world. It’s been 14 years since Hideaki Anno started revisiting his legendary anime “Neon Genesis Evangelion” with the “Rebuild” movies, which may have started out as straight remakes, but quickly diverted into telling their own story as they moved past the events of the original show into unexplored territory. Now “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time” brings the long-delayed, highly anticipated tetralogy to a close with a bold, messy, uplifting, audacious, and emotional film that expands, complements, and comments upon what came before, while giving fans a fitting close not only to the movie series, but the entirety of “Evangelion.” With new technology and the benefit of hindsight at his disposal, Anno has finally been able to tell the story he’s been straining towards for his entire adult life — a story of healing and growing up.

Scoring another record with a local title in Japan, Imax has had its best opening day ever for a film there with Shin Evangelion. Overall, the movie, which is the fourth and final installment in the Rebuild of Evangelion series, grossed nearly 828 million yen ($7.6 million). Of that, the Imax portion was $740,000.
The sci-fi animated movie also scored Imax’s highest ever opening day indexing for a local-language title in Japan, good for 10% of overall box office from only 1%-2% of total screens.
Also going by the title Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, the Toho Pictures release had been delayed by Covid and ultimately went out on an atypical Monday. Despite that, and along with a pandemic-related 8 p.m. curfew in key areas (including Tokyo), Imax recorded sellouts throughout the day, including at 6 a.m. showings.

The Japanese science fiction anime “Cowboy Bebop” is a 1998 twenty-six episode television series which takes place on Mars in the year 2071. Highly acclaimed and popular in the West, it’s about the adventures of a bunch of bounty hunters who fly around in the spaceship named “Bebop”. The aspect of connecting with one’s past, loneliness and lost is a reoccurring theme through the series. Furthermore, thanks to the amazing jazz soundtrack and action sequences, this is a memorable production indeed.
In 2001, “Cowboy Bebop: Knockin on Heaven’s Door” hits the big screen with more action and a bigger budget, however, it’s internationally known as “Cowboy Bebop: the Movie”, a full length feature film set near the end of the original series concerning a terrorist releasing a deadly virus on Mars. The reward for capturing him in is too tempting for our favorite bounty hunters to...

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.

The ad campaign for the upcoming theatrical release of Anno Hideaki‘s Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo – the third in the four-film retelling of the Neon Genesis Evangelion series – has been… curious, to say the least.
With the film hitting Japanese screens next month we’ve shown, if I remember correctly, a trailer that was shown on some wall screening at some festival (I’m terrible at remembering things lately… I’m accepting donations for a smartphone, to serve as my storage and planning brain part hahaah), right?
This new teaser has actual footage from the movie. It’s short, though, but take a look below nevertheless:
It is one of the greatest anime series ever created and one of the highest achievements in international science fiction, as well as one of the origin-questioningly-and-philosophically deepest animes ever – period. And fans of Neon Genesis Evangelion have had a long wait for the latest installment.

If I had more free hours in a day, I would probably devote a lot of attention to some of these mangas I haven’t had the opportunity to read. The premise for George Akiyama’s “Ashura”, which was published from 1970 to 1971 in Weekly Shonen Magazine, certainly sounds intriguing, which has helped spur my interest in director Keiichi Sato’s “Asura”. Same story, except without the “H”. I’m sure that won’t make much of a difference. Right? I managed to track down this synopsis. Thanks, Asian Wiki: Set in war torn mid-15th century Japan, a boy named Asura was born a beast. A young girl named Wakasa helps to tame Asura and help foster his human side. Asura grows up to become a high preist and help guide lost souls to heaven. “Asura”, which features the voice talents of Masako Nozawa, Kinya Kitaoji, and Megumi Hayashibara, battles...
