Update: President Joe Biden told a group of donors at the home of Haim Saban that “we’re going to live with this inflation for a while,” but said that “this idea that inflation is caused by the economic growth we’ve caused is simply not true.”
Inflation, Biden said, according to pool reporters, is “going to come down gradually but we are going to live with it for a while,” as he argued that the solution is to lower prices on other things.
The event at the home of Saban and wife Cheryl Saban raised money for the Democratic National Committee, and was the second of two on Friday. They were Biden’s first in-person fundraisers in Los Angeles since he took office.

It’s too early to be certain, but there are signs L.A.’s ultra-high-end property market may be cautiously emerging from its coronavirus-induced cocoon. David Geffen recently downsized to a $65 million Beverly Hills estate, Elon Musk sold his $29 million Bel Air main residence to a Chinese billionaire, rapper Travis Scott inked a $23.5 million deal in Brentwood and Seagram heiress Ellen Bronfman and her husband Andrew Hauptman shelled out $21.5 million for a sprawling Malibu compound.
Pacific Palisades resident Hillary Thomas recently went hunting for a residential upgrade, quickly falling for an all-new estate with every designer amenity imaginable and mesmerizing Pacific ocean views. Still-ongoing pandemic notwithstanding, records reveal she received only a small discount on the property. Originally listed with a $26 million pricetag earlier this year — at that time the most expensive listing in the Palisades — the house transferred for $24 million.
Despite the sky-high number, the buyer can easily afford this deluxe estate.

While some members of the Hollywood ruling class flirted with backing ex-la Los Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for Governor during the primaries, there was no doubt that this Democratic town was going to line up behind Gavin Newsom once the current Lt. This review was written for the theatrical release of "Lions for Lambs".LONDON -- The title of Robert Redford's "Lions for Lambs" comes from a comment made by a German officer in World War I about the bravery of British soldiers compared to the criminal stupidity of their commanders. The film, which had its world premiere Monday at the London Film Festival, makes clear that Redford feels the same way about the current political leadership of the U.S. and the men and women fighting and dying in the name of their country.
In sober and unemotional fashion, Redford and writer Matthew Michael Carnahan set out the arguments for and against America's military incursions in Iraq and Afghanistan, leaving it for the audience to ponder a response. They leave no doubt, however, where they stand.
Boxoffice response to films dealing with the U.S. government's strategies in the Middle East so far suggests that the public is not eager to grapple with the topic onscreen. Redford's film will appeal to those who feel that today's military sacrifices are being made on false premises, but its responsible tone could draw a more widely appreciative audience.
Clocking in at 90 minutes, the film has three settings, two of which involve discussions on the merits of commitment to activism and politics far removed from the field of battle. The third shows two Special Forces volunteers trapped on a snowy mountain in Afghanistan and surrounded by the enemy.
Redford plays Dr. Stephen Malley, a lecturer at an unnamed California university who is attempting to convince a bright but undisciplined student named Todd (Andrew Garfield) that he should apply his talents to help solving the problems of the day.
Meryl Streep is Janine Roth, a veteran television reporter whose skills include taking shorthand and the ability to land an exclusive interview with hotshot Sen. Jasper Irving (Tom Cruise). Irving has his eye on the White House, and what he has to reveal is a new strategy that involves sending small Special Forces teams deep into mountainous territory to prevent Sunni and Shia insurgents from uniting.
In fact, that strategy already has been launched. When a Chinook helicopter attempts a landing in a dangerous area, it comes under fire and two soldiers are pitched out into harm's way. Arian Finch (Derek Luke) and Ernest Rodriguez (Michael Pena), both from deprived communities but believers in the American dream, are exactly the kind of youngsters that Malley lionizes.
The film cuts back and forth between the three scenarios as the senator tries to convince the reporter that his way is right, the professor does the same with the student and the two grunts try to stay alive.
The debate between the politician and the journalist comes off best as both actors get under the skin of their characters, with Cruise snapping out details with charming efficiency and Streep showing the reporter's increasing skepticism with typical subtlety.
Pena and Luke are fine in a classroom sequence that reveals their selfless idealism, and they do what's required in combat scenes made uglier by also being viewed via satellite.
Redford wears his heart on his sleeve in the scenes between the professor and the effortlessly smart kid. Garfield is also fine, but the encounter suffers from being polemical and as a result lacks drama.
Politicians, the media, educators, military commanders and a docile public all come under fire in a well-made movie that offers no answers but raises many important questions.

Kevin Macdonald, who directed Forest Whitaker to an Oscar in The Last King of Scotland, has signed on to helm State of Play for Universal Pictures. Working Title's Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan have joined Andell Entertainment's Andrew Hauptman as producers on the thriller, which has Brad Pitt attached to star.
State of Play is an adaptation of an award-winning BBC miniseries that revolves around an elected government official and his former campaign manager (Pitt), who is now a journalist for a high-profile national paper. When two seemingly unrelated slayings are linked by a single phone call, the friends find themselves on opposite sides of the investigation. Matthew Michael Carnahan wrote the adaptation, which moves the action to Washington.
Paul Abbott, who created the 2003 series, is executive producing. A late 2007 start date is eyed.
Macdonald's Scotland won BAFTA awards for best actor, adapted screenplay and the Alexander Korda Award for best British film. He is repped by Endeavor and Peters Fraser & Dunlop in the U.K.

The Black List is a top 10 best unproduced screenplays complied by (you fill in the blank) insiders at talent agencies, management companies, and film studios. 2 of last year’s top 3 are far from being shelved under a pile of other scripts – Things We Lost in the Fire is in post prod and the number 3 consensus pick Lars And The Real Girl is being produced by Sidney Kimmel Entertainment and is currently filming. Juno is lining up for a January shoot in Vancouver. Posted on the blog site www.spinandstir.com, this year the Top 10 list surfaces once again, however many of the scripts are already being produced by big studios. LONDON -- Independent U.K. development and production company Mission Pictures is set to recruit a new London team following the departure of co-founder Graham Broadbent, production exec Pete Czernin and development chief Sophie Meyer, the company said Tuesday. Broadbent's departure follows the exit of co-founder Damian Jones, who left the company in June. Jones and Broadbent set up the venture in August 2001 with Andrew Hauptman, a former director of business development and strategic planning at Universal Studios, backed by an undisclosed amount of cash from Hauptman's private investment company Andell Entertainment (HR 8/29). Hauptman said in a statement Tuesday that he has promoted Tracy Falco to senior vp at Mission Pictures, aiming to fulfill the company's "original remit to develop and produce studio-level motion pictures." A spokesman for the company said the Los Angeles-based Falco, previously vp development and production at Ted Demme's Spanky Pictures, would recruit a team to work from the London office with that original aim in mind. The company has offices in London and Los Angeles.

With higher-profile "Mafia!" coming up lame at the boxoffice and comedies of all kinds flooding the theatrical market, it's doubtful that modestly budgeted, unevenly funny gangster spoof "Safe Men" will make off with more than chump change. The small October Films release might find a bigger, undemanding audience on cable.
Sam Rockwell ("Lawn Dogs") and Steve Zahn ("That Thing You Do!") head an ensemble cast in the debut of writer-director John Hamburg, an NYU alum who made the short "Tick". Set in the Jewish underworld of Providence, R.I., "Safe Men" has a few good laughs and memorable moments but not enough flair or pizazz to boost its reputation over time.
Sam Rockwell) and Eddie (Zahn) are lousy singer-songwriters mistaken for master safecrackers and shanghaied by a mobster known around town as Veal Chop (Paul Giamatti). Mr. Chop works for Big Fat Bernie Gayle (Michael Lerner), a bully who accuses the bewildered leads of trying to rob his house in an obvious setup and demands that they break into three safes.
Of course, Sam and Eddie have no clue how to meet that obligation, but feeling sufficiently threatened, they give it a try. Meanwhile, there is a two-man team of real thieves (Josh Pais, Mark Ruffalo) who cross their paths, the looming bar mitzvah of Big Fat Bernie Jr. (Michael Schmidt) and Bernie Sr.'s rivalry with scheming fence Good Stuff Leo (Harvey Fierstein).
Sam and Eddie often get stuck on small details of their befuddled existence; in one scene, their silly arguing is interrupted by one of their robbery victims. But Hannah (Christina Kirk) is the crimewise daughter of Leo and takes an instant liking to Sam. Knowing that she has given up dating crooks, Sam tries to lie, but like practically everything else, he's not good at it.
Lerner and Giamatti go for broad strokes. The not-at-all-fresh ethnic angle is exploited with repetitive jokes but nothing too offensive. Rockwell and Zahn are either whiny babies or wily risk takers, and their nerdy charisma and dumb-guys shtick are likewise predictable after the first few rounds. Newcomer Kirk is a bit tentative but alluring as the lone female.
