Quentin Tarantino once ranked actor Chris Pine as one of his favorite modern actors in the film industry. And although Pine achieved superstardom thanks to Star Trek, Star Trek wasn’t the movie that made him who he was.

Star Trek did a lot to boost Pine’s celebrity status in the film industry. Since doing the JJ Abrams series, he’s starred in several hit projects and solidified himself as an A-lister. Pine also caught the eye of Tarantino, who was more than impressed by his performances and presence.
“Now, to me, of the actors of his age, he’s hands down my favorite — of that group, of that era, of those guys. Hands down, my favorite. When I saw him in the Star Trek movie as Captain Kirk I thought he was making this movie.

Chris Pine is not who you think he is. Sure, he’s the handsome, blue-eyed actor famous for roles combining action, intensity, and charm in Star Trek, Wonder Woman, and Into the Woods. But beneath the movie star is a man who grew up with deep insecurities. He loves his job and talking cinema but doesn’t enjoy talking about himself and would rather be drinking coffee and reading than being interviewed.
It is Valentine’s Day morning when we speak via Zoom, just a few days shy of the 20th anniversary of the E.R. episode “A Thousand Cranes,” Pine’s 2003 onscreen debut where he played a guy who got drunk—at a blow-out Valentine’s party. The publicity machine is revving up for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, his action-adventure vehicle based on the tabletop fantasy game, but he’s also thinking of his directorial debut Poolman,...

Quentin Tarantino started 2020 with an interview on The Ringer’s “Rewatchables” podcast in which he named Chris Pine “hands down” his favorite young actor working today, so it’s no surprise the director intended to have a total blast with Pine’s Captain Kirk in his R-rated “Star Trek” movie. Tarantino came up with an original idea for a “Star Trek” movie (he previously described the idea as an “earthbound” 1930s gangster movie) and worked with “The Revenant” screenwriter Mark L. Smith on the screenplay. In an interview with SFX Magazine, Smith teased the end results of his “Star Trek” collaboration with the “Pulp Fiction” icon.
“I wrote a ‘Star Trek’ with Tarantino, and that was a sci-fi script on which I could have fun and lean into some bigger, broader things,” Smith said. “Kirk is always just so fun. Tarantino and I had so much fun with him, because Kirk is just William Shatner,...

Quentin Tarantino appeared on The Ringer’s “Rewatchables” podcast at the start of 2020 and revealed that Chris Pine is “hands down my favorite” actor of his generation. It turns out the “Pulp Fiction” and “Kill Bill” director’s love for Pine extends to Pine’s family tree. Pine’s grandmother is Anne Gwynne, the American actress who starred in dozens of films throughout the 1940s. Gwynne’s credits include Westerns such as “Men of Texas” and “Ride ‘Em Cowboy,” plus a string of horror movies like “Black Friday” and “House of Frankenstein.” Tarantino happens to be a Gwynne super-fan.
“I’ve been to the Academy Awards a couple of times and I always take my mom and we have a great old time and laugh a bunch and she holds all the Power Bars,” Pine said on the first episode of J. Claude Deering’s new podcast, adding that he...

Desert Nights with John Gilbert and Mary Nolan: Enjoyable Sahara-set adventure – which happened to be Gilbert's last silent film – dares to ask the age-old philosophical question, “Is there honor among thieves?” John Gilbert late silent adventure 'Desert Nights' asks a question for the ages: Is there honor among thieves? The Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer release Desert Nights arrived in theaters at the tail end of the silent era. By 1929, audiences wanted lots of singing and dancing – talkies! And they might have been impatient to hear John Gilbert's speaking voice. I can't tell whether sound would have improved it or not, but Desert Nights has a lot of title cards filled with dialogue. Directed by the prolific William Nigh,[1] the film tells the story of diamond thieves who get stranded in the Sahara and almost die of thirst. (At first, Desert Nights' was appropriately titled Thirst.) Cinematographer James Wong Howe perfectly captures the hot, dry...

Led by host George Clooney, Hollywood's A-list turned out to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the Motion Picture & Television Fund, the longstanding support system for entertainment industry seniors and industry professionals. But it was an even older showbiz institution who stole the show: soon-to-be-centenarian Kirk Douglas. Clooney, who with his wife Amal toured the expansive Woodland Hills, California, facility that provides housing, medical care and other assistance programs for aging and ailing members of the show business community earlier in the day, opened the song-and-dance-filled celebration with a nod to both the Mptf and legendary film star Douglas' impressive longevity.

"By that time she'd had a stroke and was so compromised physically that any sense of freedom, she enjoyed to no end," says Pine. "We would take her along the paths lined with

Chris Pine is not keen on flag-waving patriotism, so his fresh take on Hollywood's favourite all-American CIA man is to make him an everyday hero … with muscles
• Video interview: Chris Pine
Chris Pine has already gone where one man has gone before. In 2009, and again last year, he took on Captain Kirk, a part until then synonymous with William Shatner. So tackling Jack Ryan, the CIA agent played by various actors over the years, wasn't such a big deal. "I think I learned my lesson doing Kirk," says Pine. "You can cage yourself in if you start thinking, 'I've got to copy this or that.' But just knowing what others have done – having the pillars of the character – helped."
Set in the modern day and directed by Kenneth Branagh, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit deals with the agent's origins. But it is not a prequel to the previous big-screen adventures:...

Chris Pine knew acting was his destiny when he shot his first big screen role - because it was filmed at the same studio where both his dad and grandmother once worked.
The Star Trek hunk has acting in his blood - his maternal grandmother Anne Gwynne was a famous 'scream queen' in the 1940s with roles in numerous horror movies, while his father, Robert Pine, made a name for himself starring in U.S. cop show CHiPs.
And Pine admits he was overwhelmed when he showed up for work on his movie debut Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, because it was filmed at Universal Studios - the former employer of his acting relatives.
He tells Details magazine, "My father calls acting a state of permanent retirement with short spurts of work. My grandmother was an actress, too. In the thirties and forties she was under contract with Universal Studios. Crazy credits, lots of them.
"My dad was also under contract with Universal Studios. And my first film was shot on the same stage they both worked on at Universal. Crazy, right?"...

The new Captain Kirk’s real Dad, Robert Pine, has a “cocktail conversation” about battling Empire Of The Ants.
Audiences are getting accustomed to Chris Pine as the newJames T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, but not many people know that he comes from an acting family, including his grandmother (the late Anne Gwynne, seen in House Of Frankenstein and 1941’s The Black Cat), his Mom (Masters Of The Universe’s Gwynne Gilford) and his Dad, Robert Pine—who’s best known as the boss on TV’s CHiPs and the Mayor on Black Scorpion. And, of course, the elder Pine was also part of the anti-insect ensemble in Empire Of The Ants.
Robert Pine offers his testimony on the experience: “My agent told me, ‘I’ve got a film for you. It’s called Empire Of The Ants.’ I thought about it for a moment and said, ‘You know…...
