In part two of our interview with Judi & Ron Barrett (part one can be found here), the married couple chat about how long it took to write and illustrate Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, how long it took for the film to reach the screen, the importance of both books and, of course, good food!
Published in 1978, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs is a mere 32 pages, but that doesn’t reflect on the amount of time and effort it took to complete the project. “It’s hard to say [how long it took], because I didn’t sit and just write every day,” Judy observes. “Cloudy probably took well over a year.”
“It took about a year to draw,” Ron adds. “I didn’t do anything else but draw every day for a year.”
“But [from its inception to its publication], the book was about two-and-a-half years in the making,” Judi says.
The Barretts still have the book’s original drawings.

I grew up watching Bob Clampett’s Beany And Cecil in reruns, and immediately fell in love with everyone’s favorite seasick sea serpent, his lil’ beanie-wearing buddy, Beany’s squinty-eyed, bearded Captain Uncle and that most dastardly of villains, Dishonest John. After checking some websites, I discovered that only one (yes, One!) DVD of the 1960s animated series has been released on DVD—and that was back in 2000! So another collection of Clampett’s beloved cartoon was loooong overdue, and Hen’s Tooth Video has met that demand with Bob Clampett’S Beany And Cecil: The Special Edition: Volume Two. The one-disc DVD only includes 11 episodes (which run around six minutes each, give or take), but there’s a Ton of bonus features to go over, so let’s get started. I’m coming, Beany boy!
For those of you unfamiliar with the cartoon and its origins, Beany...

In a case of incredibly lucky timing, Craig Yoe, the author of Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman’s Co-Creator Joe Shuster, The Art of Ditko, The Complete Milt Gross Comic Book Stories and Life Story, The Bizarre Comics of Boody Rogers, and The Great Anti-War Cartoons, has started blogging again on Super I.T.C.H. (International Team of Comics Historians) with a well-timed piece: Jack Kirby's drawing of Mickey Mouse:
Back in 1991, I did a coffee table art book “The Art of Mickey Mouse”, I got artists from around the world to do their interpretation of “The World’s Favorite Mouse.” One of the first people I called was Jack Kirby. He and his wife Roz were very excited about the idea. He sent me two drawings, as I recall, and I chose this one. I colored it “animation style,” with the black line...
