Traditionally, solo albums can afford an artist the opportunity to explore previously uncharted sonic or lyrical terrain. In Alison Goldfrapp’s case, however, the electronic duo that bears her surname has mined such a rich, diverse palette over the last two-plus decades—from trip-hop to synth-pop to folk—that a solo venture seems like little more than a chance to make music with people who aren’t Will Gregory.
The Love Invention was birthed during the pandemic, when the singer says she was forced to create music more independently than she had in years. She ultimately tapped Richard X, who co-produced Goldfrapp’s 2010 single “Alive,” and Ghost Culture’s James Greenwood to bring her vision to life, though the album doesn’t stray too far from Goldfrapp’s synth-pop roots.

Alison Goldfrapp has recorded her first official solo album, The Love Invention. The Goldfrapp singer’s solo debut drops May 12th via Skint/BMG Music, and as a preview, her new song “So Hard So Hot” is out now.
Goldfrapp — the person, not the band — has fronted the eponymous synth-pop duo with Will Gregory since 1999, but The Love Invention marks the first full-length the artist has put out on her own. Still, that doesn’t mean the album is without collaborators: Richard X, James Greenwood, and Toby Scott all appear on the LP’s credits.
“So Hard So Hot” mixes disco vibes and a more contemporary, bass-driven sound. “Do you know, do you know, do you know how stars are made?” Goldfrapp sings on the track. “Yeah you know, yeah you know, yeah you know how we radiate.” It comes with a psychedelic music video directed by Mat Maitland, which you can watch below.

BAFTA-winning Paul Wright’s archival exploration of the evolution of the use of British land, “Arcadia,” has been given a new lease of life thanks to the duo behind the film’s score. Five years after it first hit screens, Goldfrapp’s Will Gregory and Portishead’s Adrian Utley have turned the film’s vibrant music into a live show appropriately titled “Arcadia Live.” In the show, the film plays in the background as a nine-person band, including lauded singer Lisa Knapp plus Gregory and Utley themselves, performs the eclectic collection of songs, which goes from classic folk to techno.
Why present the film live now? “We both feel the relevance of the film has become more acute because of what has happened in the years since,” says Gregory, when sitting down with Variety to discuss the live show after its international premiere at IDFA. “We’ve got evermore peril to do with climate and,...

This imaginative festival mines the rich theme of "extraction" this year, with a host of films and events exploring human appropriation of raw materials in the broadest sense. It's a very literal theme for Chinese film-maker Wang Bing, whose epic films (such as the 14-hour Crude Oil and The Ditch) convey the full scope of industrial activity. There's music too, as Test Department regroup to bring industrial site Dunston Staiths – a massive structure on the Tyne – back to life for a series of outdoor audio-visual events.

Tales of Us is the latest release from British electronic dance duo Goldfrapp. The duo fronted by Alison Goldfrapp and producer Will Gregory are renowned for their euro brand of dance pop. Often hailed as a group who are always mixing up their sound upon each new release and surprising fans with their changes. As a fan of their previous work I was interested to hear what they had in store for their sixth release.
With Tales of Us Goldfrapp reverts back to a familiar territory previously heard on their debut album Felt Mountain which has the duo straying away from their electronic infused pop numbers that made them popular dance floor fillers. Tales of Us shows Alison and Will delve into a stripped back sound with captivating vocals sung in a storytelling style. One of the things that excites me most about a new James Bond film is finding out who is going to sing the title theme. The past twenty-three Bond themes read like a who’s who of the music industry from classy crooners like Matt Monroe and Tom Jones to eighties boy bands, Duran Duran and A-ha. Not to mention pop queens like Shirley Bassey, Tina Turner and Madonna, who have all taken a shot at belting out an iconic opening track (or several in Dame Shirley’s case).
If the above artists demonstrate anything, it is that recording a Bond theme is anyone’s game. So here are five artists that deserve a shot at adding to Bond’s fifty year legacy by recording one of 007′s title themes.

"Two decades ago everything tasted better when drizzled with the special chocolate sauce of 'postmodernism,' and Twin Peaks was the most ironic cherry pie vehicle for that addictive popular culture had yet baked up," writes Dennis Harvey in the San Francisco Bay Guardian. I have not had the privilege of seeing this film yet and we have not covered it much on the site but I had to post this really cool music montage video of the film because I am a huge Beatles fan and love the rendition of the song they used.

The film stars Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass!) as Lennon, the eventual front man of The Beatles. Will Gregory and Alison Goldfrapp composed the new biopic of a pre-Beatles John Lennon directed by Sam Taylor Wood. The film takes us on a comical and yet slightly dramatic tale of the famous front man and his journey to find himself and his destiny. Throughout the story youthful Lennon who is played by Kick-Ass’s Aaron Johnson meets his future band mate Paul McCartney who, is played by Thomas Sangster. Goldfrapp: Head First (Mute)
I just learned recently that I've been listening to Allison Goldfrapp for longer than I realized: She's on Tricky's 1995 classic Maxinquaye, five years before the debut of her duo with Will Gregory. For a long time they were a reliable source of dancefloor anthems, but last time out found them taking a folkier, less beat-driven tack. Head First finds them back doing what they do best, dance music, but with their most poppy, tuneful batch of songs yet. My friend Mitch Friedland (Springhouse) came in one day when I was listening to this and joked "What is this, the new Olivia Newton John?" It's funny because it's true, but it's also true that this is a better album than Onj ever made, the strong Italo-disco influence and high-gloss production pleasing the club crowd while the solid songwriting makes it fine home listening as well.

Plenty of pop artists have written and performed soundtracks for silent films recently, but few are as fit for the job as Portishead's Adrian Utley and Goldfrapp's Will Gregory. Their groups have always made ambitious, cinematic music, and both men have classical clout – Gregory as a former saxophonist for the London Sinfonietta, and Utley as a composer for film and TV.
This is their first live score together, for a long-lost 1928 expressionist classic. It was found again in 1981, and an ensemble of electric guitars, voices, synthesisers, brass, harp and percussion, conducted by BBC presenter Charles Hazlewood, are here recreating and amplifying its menace and myths.
The eerie whirr of the hall's film projector leads us into the action, but the music begins monotonously. Bass trombones, tuba and drums plod out obvious hints of portent, while shrill sopranos and tenors arrive like godly shorthand. But as Joan's fate darkens,...

"Nowhere Boy", the directorial debut of Sam Taylor-Wood, is a bio-pic, focusing on Beatle John Lennon's childhood and adolescence, based on the book "Imagine This: Growing Up With My Brother John Lennon" by Lennon's half sister Julia Baird.
The story follows Lennon's teenage years and first steps to stardom, charting the influence his Aunt Mimi, mother Julia and friendship with Paul McCartney had on his career.
British actor Aaron Johnson plays Lennon and Thomas Sangster plays McCartney, with Kristin Scott Thomas as aunt Mimi and Anne-Marie Duff as Julia.
Screenplay was written by Matt Greenhalgh.
Producers negotiated with Yoko Ono for the rights to use some of Lennon's original songs in the film, with British electronica duo Goldfrapp scoring the main soundtrack.
The film debuted October 2009 @ the London Film Festival and is set for a limited release in North America October 2010.

Thinking man’s diva revels in ’80s-pop artifice Alison Goldfrapp never does anything halfway. From the icy, otherworldly electro-acoustic soundscapes of 2000’s Felt Mountain to her subsequent romps through dance-pop and leering glam, she’s become a more dangerous and dignified counterpart to the look-at-me theatrics of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Now, following an unexpected shift toward pastoral psych-pop on 2008’s Seventh Tree, she and collaborator Will Gregory have circled back to dance music, this time with a pronounced emphasis on ’80s synth-pop and Italo disco....

Part three arrives and it comes with 20 more films to keep an eye on this year as potential Oscar candidates. If you missed parts one and two, the links for both of those can be found on the bottom of page two of this post.
With today's list of films it brings the total previewed thus far to 60 early Oscar contending films and already one reader has sent in a potential new candidate I am looking into further to see if the list again will grow from it's current total of 73 films to 74 and what may amount to a fifth film for Helen Mirren. With no films this year for Meryl Streep, it looks like Mirren is stacking the deck.
I will again remind you, this is merely a guide to potential nominees, not a guarantee, not a lock, but simply films that could potentially go on to be remembered at the year-end Oscar race.

Goldfrapp have debuted a music video in support of their latest single "Rocket". Alison Goldfrapp is taking behind the wheel of a trailer with a male companion, who is wrapped in glossy gray duct tape, sitting on the passenger seat. Somewhere in a desert area, she makes a stop and launches a rocket to the outer space with the guy strapped on it.
The video is directed by Kim Gehrig. Though mostly focusing on Allison, it still manages to show the band's other member Will Gregory who plays a lazy gas station attendant.
"Rocket" is Goldfrapp's lead single from their forthcoming studio installment "Head First" which is scheduled to arrive in the U.S. stores on March 23. The song was recently praised by Adam Lambert for having great tune "in terms of nodding to that '80s sound but doing it in a contemporary way."

Goldfrapp have claimed that they are not put under pressure by their record company to make commercial music. The duo insisted that their label Mute, which was sold to Emi in 2002, did not demand that they record a pop album following 2008's ambient Seventh Tree. "There wasn't pressure for a certain type of album. Well there was definitely pressure to get it out quickly, but they never tell us what sort of record they think it should be," Will Gregory told Popjustice. "They definitely don't tell us what we should be doing. But they do say when they'd like it done. But really we're left to our own devices... We don't get that kind of pressure like from other record companies," Alison Goldfrapp (more)...

From Goldfrapp to Badly Drawn Boy, from Karen O to Nick Cave, more and more big names are lining up to write music for films. What makes the process so appealing?
'When you're writing a song, it's like you're the director, scriptwriter, cinematographer, everything. You're trying to create this little world, and although that's liberating, it's also a real head scratch. When you're just coming up with one part of the process, it's liberating in another way."
Alison Goldfrapp is trying to explain, I suspect to herself as much as anyone else, why she and her musical partner, Will Gregory, spent most of the summer frantically writing the score for Nowhere Boy, Sam Taylor-Wood's biopic of the young John Lennon, when every shred of common sense suggested they should have been finishing the next Goldfrapp record instead. "It's enjoyable and fascinating to try and complement something that already exists," she continues.
