Anne Boleyn has been played on screen since the silent movie era. She’s been portrayed as a six-fingered boo-hiss villain, a Saturday Night Live punchline, a ghost haunting Princess Diana, and in recent stage musical Six, a Kate Nash-style aitch-dropping popstrel.

‘Gone With The Wind’ To Get Trigger Warning For “Hurtful Or Harmful” Aspects Of 19th-Century Slavery
Gone With the Wind will now come with a trigger warning for those affected by descriptions of 19th century slavery in the Deep South.
The Daily Telegraph in the UK reports that publisher Pan Macmillan has decided readers could find depictions of the era “hurtful or indeed harmful,” and is adding a warning to new editions of Margaret Mitchell’s classic novel – published in 1936 and brought to the screen in 1939 starring Vivien Leigh and Clarke Gable as southern belle Scarlett O’Hara and her husband Rhett Butler.
In contract with recent issues of Agatha Christie works – which have been edited to remove content considered objectionable in 2023 – Mitchell’s copy has not been altered, but the warning gives notice of “shocking elements” and “the romanticization of a shocking era in our history.”
It adds: ‘The novel includes the representation of unacceptable practices, racist and stereotypical depictions and troubling themes, characterisation, language and imagery.

Just in time for the Jubilee of her namesake Elizabeth II, England’s longest reigning monarch, Starz and creator Anya Reiss (“EastEnders”) gaze back to another, lesser-known micro-slice of Tudor history in “Becoming Elizabeth.” The series asks: what was happening to the wicked smart, red-haired “virgin” queen-to-be in the tumultuous months following the death of her father, Henry VIII, in 1547 — and over a decade after Pops beheaded her unpopular mother Anne Boleyn?

Netflix’s Bridgerton has swept viewers off their feet with its lush blend of romance tropes—fake relationship, forbidden love, “we could be together if only we could stop misunderstanding each other”—anchored by the soapy, searing gossip of one Lady Whistledown. Those eight episodes went down like tea sandwiches, doubtless leaving viewers hungry for more Regency romance and timeless drama. Thankfully, you can sate your appetites with these nine TV series. A mix of adaptations and original series, they reimagine famous figures as compelling heroines and transplant viewers into immersive towns and households, with new scandals and love stories to get obsessed with.

Following in the vein of “The White Queen” and “The White Princess” before it, Starz limited series “The Spanish Princess” is inspired by Philippa Gregory’s novels. The story follows Catherine of Aragon, who arrives in England in the 1600s betrothed to Prince Arthur, then encounters his father, Henry VII. In adapting the story for the modern audience, let alone the modern medium of television, showrunners Emma Frost and Matthew Graham set their sights on being true to the cultural diversity recent research has revealed, while giving Catherine more “agency” than might have been allowed at the time.
Restoring the Royal Court
“History is the tale of the victors,” Frost says, and because of that, “history books are written by those in power, who were white men.” But, Graham adds, even a “cursory Google search” now proves there is a much richer history that has been whitewashed out of such books.

“The Spanish Princess,” which premiered May 5, rounds out the Starz miniseries triptych that began in 2013 with “The White Queen” and continued four years later with “The White Princess.” The latest seven episodes revolve around Spain’s Catherine of Aragon, played by Charlotte Hope, in line to receive the highly contested throne of England in the 16th century. The stories are adapted from Philippa Gregory’s “The Cousins’ War” series.
Emma Frost served as writer on “White Queen” and showrunner on “White Princess” and, with Matthew Graham, is showrunner again on “Spanish Princess.” Just as the action draws heavily on alliances among women, a similar dynamic reigned behind the scenes when making the miniseries.
“We had a very conscious desire both politically and creatively to prioritize looking at the work of women [when we were crewing up],” says Frost. “Though we’d ultimately hire whoever was best for the job, with this show we were into...

Congratulations! We made it through the first third of 2019. Now, like a garden born from the ashes left by a fire-breathing beast flying through an arbitrarily placed cloud, there are plenty of new shows looking to take their share of TV headlines.
Per tradition, we’ve collected some of the more notable series premieres for the month of May, stretching across cable, broadcast, and streaming. A good number listed below are also limited series, set to close out before we get too far into summer, so enjoy them while you can.
(We do this roundup of new shows pretty much every month — if you missed any of those previous picks, here are some notable TV premieres from February, March, and April.)

After a pair of previous limited series rooted in 15th century Tudor history, this latest Starz outing looks at Catherine of Aragon and the union between two empires.

With sumptuous costumes and a cast including a couple of familiar and beloved costume-drama players, Starz’s “The Spanish Princess,” about the travails of Catherine of Aragon, seems designed to appeal to lovers of broadly drawn historical romance. And yet it’s hard to imagine anyone outside the core constituency for royals and the games they play finding much of interest in “The Spanish Princess”: Baroque in its attention to detail, but telling its version of history strictly for the fandom.
Part of the problem — one that grows increasingly difficult to look past, even despite all the finery on display — is the character at the show’s center. Catherine, who arrives in England as a teenager in order to cement an alliance between the besieged kingdom and her native Spain, is a cipher throughout. Sandra Oh is a bona-fide goddess in our book, first charming us with her unforgettable part as Cristina Yang on Grey's Anatomy, then bringing a nuanced performance to the title character on Killing Eve. But her new show wouldn't be what it is without the "killing" part, of course. Besides Oh, we've also fallen deeply in love with her colead Jodie Comer, the actress who's been bringing an insatiable sexy murderess energy to the antagonist Villanelle.
The 26-year-old Liverpool native landed her first gig on a BBC 4 Radio play, where professional actors encouraged her to pursue her craft. Her small-screen career kicked off when she picked up a small part in the British hospital soap opera The Royal Today. Since this modest role, the actress has become a known name on British television.
According to an interview with Donna Ida, Comer considers her breakthrough role that of Chloe Gemell in My Mad Fat Diary.

‘The Spanish Princess’ Trailer: Starz Royal Drama Spotlights the Formidable First Wife of Henry VIII
The reign of Henry VIII is one of the most storied periods in both history and literature. “The Spanish Princess,” the latest royal drama from Starz, is the newest series to look at that era not just from the throne, but of the high-ranking women whose lives were intertwined with the fate of empires.
Charlotte Hope stars as Catherine of Aragon, looking for a way to overcome the loss of her husband, the teenage Arthur Tudor. The trailer below reimagines the first interactions between Catherine, princess of Spain, and her eventual second husband Henry (Ruairi O’Connor). A prelude to one of the most consequential sagas of the 1500s, “The Spanish Princess” views Catherine as not just a pawn of history, but a young woman who set a plan in motion to rule her own destiny.
Amidst the potential bloodshed and shaky imperial alliances, Catherine is joined by an expansive group of characters,...

Jodie Comer is extraordinary as international assassin Villanelle in Killing Eve. Here are her best roles so far…
Funny and terrifying, vulnerable and cruel, human and alien, clever and supremely unfazed but also petty, childish and an utter, fizzing moon unit… the combination of elements Jodie Comer brings to her role in Killing Eve is extraordinary.
It’s the kind of performance you can’t afford to look away from because you’ll miss what she does next - chuckle or smile or look out from behind her eyes with the amused coldness of a millennia-old tundra, or, you know, all three at the same time, while ramming a Stanley knife blade repeatedly into someone’s heart.

Though we adore Kate Middleton as much as the next avid royal fan, we admit we're not quite as smitten with her official targets — after all, Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, Lady Carrickfergus is a bit of a mouthful! But this does have us wondering: Will Kate ever be Queen, and what would she be called if that happened? As it turns out, there's a big possibility the fashionable Kate could one day add "Queen" to her long list of titles. Her husband, Prince William, is currently second in line to the throne, right behind his father, Prince Charles. Though the dashing William, Duke of Cambridge, will have the option of either choosing a whole new name or keeping his current one (in which case he'd be King William V), Kate will be known simply as Her Majesty Queen Catherine — despite previous reports that she'd...
