It's been a rocky year for Oscar winners embracing roles in fantasy blockbusters. Eddie Redmayne delivered a pungent ham and cheese performance in The Wachowskis' Jupiter Ascending, while Julianne Moore turns it up to 11 for her role as an evil witch in this week's Seventh Son.
Moore was years away from even setting foot on the set of Still Alice when she made Seventh Son (it's been trapped in post-production hell for a while), but it does make you wonder if there's some truth to the myth that Oscar winners seem destined for an immediate career stumble. Moore at least seems to be having fun with her role as Seventh Son's Mother Malkin. To say she's chewing the scenery would be a slight misnomer seeing as so...

Fantasy has seen something of a resurgence in the last decade and a half. For years consigned to the niche market, Peter Jackson changed all that, and made it cool to like tales of dungeons and dragons again. Seventh Son however, is nothing so eloquent as Tolkein's tale. With a heavy reliance on CGI and some star power in the cast, it's an entirely forgettable fantasy adventure that will neither dazzle the crowd or leave the audience with a completely sour taste. Jeff Bridges, said star power, plays John Gregory, a seventh son of a seventh son, something which gifts him extraordinary strength and agility. Because of this, he is tasked with some supernatural policing duties, as well as recruiting others like him. Using his abilities to battle shape-shifting witches, he finds himself in the unenviable position of having to take on a new recruit (Ben Barnes) with only a...

Jeff Bridges, psychic medium. Ask the Oscar-winning actor a relatively straightforward question and you can expect an answer ten times more interesting and in-depth than you expected. On approaching his character, the gruff Master John Gregory, in Ya fantasy adaptation "Seventh Son": "You know these kinda psychic guys that channel spirits and stuff? I remember Ramtha...this woman would channel this spirit named Ramtha," said Bridges, referring to controversial American mystic J.Z. Knight. "And...it has that aspect to it for me. You know, I'll just invite a spirit or a character into me [so it can] have its way with me. And I did that in this case. Once you get the costumes on, and you're in those wonderful Dante Ferretti sets and stuff, you open yourself to be inhabited by a character to have its way with you. And that's kind of what happened [on 'Seventh Son'], you know." The Sergei Bodrov...

While some films gallop to the screen like thoroughbreads, others seems to mosey there, stopping to sniff a shrubbery and maybe munch an apple along the way. Very much the Granny Smith-bothering bracket is Sergei Bodrov’s Seventh Son, a fantasy adventure with a gilded cast that’s taken the languid route to our screens. The new trailer, though, shows that it’s coming soon and has magic in store. Click below to sample said magic. brightcove.createExperiences();To tackle his array of winged beasties and Earth-trembling monsters, Bodrov has assembled a terrific ensemble of sword swingers. Ben Barnes is our hero, with Jeff Bridges lending salty support as John Gregory, a mystical warrior who represents the last of his order. Barnes’s seventh-son-of-a-seventh-son is Tom – Luke Skywalker to Jeff Bridges’ Ben Kenobi – who is learning the ropes of witch-hunting and coming to terms with his supernatural abilities. Until last week there wasn't much to see from The Seventh Son--just a few set photos. I have not read the The Wardstone Chronicles books, and I really didn't know what to expect when the trailer was released. It is an interesting fantasy world and the there are some very talented actors involved, like Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore. The movie centers around Ben Barnes, who is "the seventh son of a seventh son" and becomes Bridges' apprentice. I want to like this film, but somehow I'm not completely sold on it. Maybe when more footage is released I'll get off the fence.
Synopsis: John Gregory, the seventh son of a seventh son and the local Spook has protected he country from witches, boggarts, ghouls and all manner of things that go bump in the night. However John is not young anymore and has been seeking out an apprentice to carry on his trade.

It seems Jeff Bridges has reached that stage in his career where he's content putting on different accents for each role (presumably so people will stop calling him The Dude). We've seen it in the trailer for Ripd, and it's on display again in the first trailer for the newest potential franchise, Seventh Son. Based on The Spook's Apprentice, the first book of Joseph Delaney's children's dark fantasy series The Wardstone Chronicles, it sees Bridges play John Gregory, whose job as a Spook is to fight against the dark forces of evil. When the powerful witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) is freed from a centuries long imprisonment, he must train his new apprentice Tom Ward (Ben Barnes, taking on a new fantasy series since it seems The Chronicles of Narnia is going nowhere) to against a new type of dark magic. The English debut of Russian director Sergei Bodrov,...

The versatile Jeff Bridges, after playing roles ranging from cowboy to tech wiz, will now under go a different change of clothes: wizard.
The first images of “The Seventh Son” have been released. The movie adaptation is based on the novel “The Spook’s Apprentice” by Joseph Delaney. Bridges will play brusque sorcerer John Gregory who is in the wintertime of his years as he tries to find an apprentice to carry on his work. The problem is all his former assistants have died and he will need the seventh son of a seventh son in order to have someone permanent.
Unfortunately, this all gets complicated further when Bridges’ nemesis played by Julianne Moore escapes from her supernatural prison. “In real life, she’s gorgeous, and she’s gorgeously grotesque,” say Bridges on her role, “She’s really something to behold in this.”

Here's our first look at Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore in the fantasy adventure film The Seventh Son. The movie was previously titled The Last Apprentice, which is based on the The Wardstone Chronicles book series by Joseph Delaney.
Bridges plays Master John Gregory, known as a "Spook" who imprisons an evil witch named Mother Malkin (Moore) uses some kind of crazy blood magic. I've seen Bridges play a lot of different characters over the years, and wear a lot of crazy outfits. But I don't recall ever seeing him dressed up as a medieval exorcist. That being said... he looks awesomely badass! Here's what the actor had to say about his character in an interview with USA Today,
He's an interesting cat. He's appreciated for keeping evil away, but he's also a frightening figure to the townspeople. When you mess around with darkness, some of that gets in you,...

I’ve never read Joseph Delaney’s “The Spook’s Apprentice”, so I have no idea what the film version of the book, “The Seventh Son” is all about. Thankfully, USAToday was kind enough to include a helpful synopsis of the book and upcoming film below. It stars Jeff Bridges as some kind of uber wizard, with Ben Barnes of “Chronicles of Narnia” fame playing his new protege. Plus, Julianne Moore as red-headed witch who is apparently a real bitch. Check out some pics from the film. Paul Chai speaks to the commissioners and producers of local content to discover a wealth of opportunities available in the Australian subscription television market for original formats.
When subscription television launched in Australia during the 90s there was initially little to no local content across the network. “Short form content only, that was the extent of it,” says Julie Ward, then head of production at Foxtel. “But there was always the vision of the halcyon days when there would be money for local content.”

A 3 1/2 year investigation into the kidnapping and murder of the American journalist shows that 27 men were involved in the crime-and 14 of them remain free on the streets of Pakistan.
Almost nine years ago, on January 23, 2002, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped off the streets of Karachi, Pakistan, brutally killed a week or so later, beheaded, and chopped into 12 pieces. In July 2002, four men were convicted of Pearl's murder, including mastermind Omar Sheikh and three men involved in sending out ransom notes to the world. Pakistan closed the case. We regret to announce the passing of George Scithers, who died Monday after suffering a heart attack on Saturday at the age of 80. He was an award winning editor, winning the Hugo award four times, and a World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2002.
Scithers' first published fiction, the story "Faithful Messenger," appeared in If magazine in 1969. His involvement in the field, however, dates back to 1957, when he began submitting to the fanzine Yandro. Two years later, he began publishing the Hugo Award-winning fanzine Amra. The term "swords and sorcery" first appeared there, and Amra became a leading proponent of the genre. Several of the articles originally published in Amra were later re-printed as part of two volumes about Conan the Barbarian which Scithers co-edited with L. Sprague de Camp.
