Netflix’s second-quarter earnings results on Wednesday were mixed, and so was Wall Street’s reaction to them.
On one hand, in early evidence to paid-sharing’s success, subscriber growth at the streaming leader was great; six million new users signed up from April to June. Another highlight from the positive side of the ledger was Netflix’s earnings per share, which easily surpassed analyst expectations. On the other, revenue was below what analysts were projecting, $8.187 billion vs. the Wall Street consensus of $8.3 billion.
You win some, you lose some — right? The problem is, as the media analysts at research firm MoffettNathanson astutely pointed out on Thursday, it is Netflix’s executives (and accountants) who have worked so hard recently to retrain us to think of revenue as being more important than subscribers.
The company’s October (Q3 ’22) shareholder letter reads, in part: “We are increasingly focused on revenue as our primary top line metric.

Lucy Paez is recounting her audition for the role of Jennifer Lopez’s daughter in “The Mother”.
In 2021, the 14-year-old actress was about to head into a movie theatre to watch “Cruella”, starring Emma Stone, when she got a call from her manager about a “huge audition” for a “really big movie” with Lopez. She immediately left the theatre to go home and record her very first self-tape, which can be viewed here.
“Of course I was going to jump at the opportunity,” Paez told Tudum of the new action thriller.

1.) Marvel has dropped another short list, and who doesn't love those? This one is for the female lead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The list includes Emilia Clarke ("Game of Thrones"), Jessica Brown Findlay ("Downton Abbey"), Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four), Imogen Poots (Fright Night) and Alison Brie (The Five Year Engagement). While there's no official word on the character just yet, it will certainly be a romantic interest for Chris Evans' Steve Rogers. Speculation suggests it could be Sharon Carter, the niece of Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell's character from the first film). It sounds like Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow will play a part in the film as well. Deadline 2.) Lynne Ramsay is prepping a sci-fi take on Moby Dick called Mobius. She will direct the project and write the script with her We Need to Talk About Kevin co-writer Rory Kinnear. I'd offer a plot description,...

Final Destination 5, the least attended of the Final Destination movies, will be lucky if it earns half as much.

Back when Chris Columbus directed the first two Harry Potter films, I was not particularly happy with him. I’m still not actually, but I’m not sure that Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief is an endeavor quite so worthy of – A) the comparison it can’t hope to escape, or B) the generally negative scrutiny it is already falling victim to.
Columbus, Hollywood’s reigning King of average in average out, managed a rather solid bit of fun here, and one that should not be called out lightly based upon the things it is not, because it is not those things rather purposefully, and to great effect besides.

Just because I think Youth in Revolt is less than daisy fresh as a coming-of-age story doesn't mean I don't dig the unique comedic talents of the movie's star, Michael Cera. And in thinking about what makes Cera so arresting a screen presence, I keep coming back to the notion of contradiction: He looks so young (he is so young) and vulnerably, virginally mid-chrysalis, with that pale skinny bod and cute chickpea head. Yet Cera possesses the expert comic timing and physical stillness of a man of experience. And certainly of a seasoned character actor. Very few young performers know...

Chicago – For Oscar-winning “Juno” writer Diablo Cody, writing “Jennifer’s Body” with “Transformers” star Megan Fox and “Mamma Mia!” star Amanda Seyfried as the two lead women was as much of an out-of-body experience as Charlize Theron’s against-type role in 2003’s “Monster”. The difference? Theron nailed it; Cody bloodied this bold opportunity.
Rating: 1.5/5.0 Since our Nov. 2007 interview with Cody for the Oscar-winning “Juno,” she’s as quick with her wit in person as she is with her pen for the screen.
While an early reading of the “Jennifer’s Body” script showed promise, once it hit the screen Cody’s razor-sharp wit was blunted against the mismatched backdrop of two female leads who couldn’t sell the script and the overarching horror tone that the talented Cody hasn’t yet mastered.

'I'm really insecure about everything,' the 'Jennifer's Body' star tells Rolling Stone.

Megan Fox is known for talking about anything and everything in interviews. In the new issue of Rolling Stone, Fox once again opened up about everything from her past self-destructive habits to her on-again, off-again relationship with "90210" alum Brian Austin Green.
The magazine even asked the actress if she ever cut herself when she was younger. "Yeah," she admitted. "But I don't want to elaborate. I would never call myself a cutter. Girls go through different phases when they're growing up, when they're miserable, and do different things, whether it's an eating disorder or they dabble in cutting."
Fox wouldn't comment, however, on whether she ever had an eating disorder. She thinks talking about that might give her "role-model status," something she doesn't want.

The glittering beauty becomes a pale and sickly creature jonesing for a meaty snack, and guys who never stood a chance with the heartless babe, take on new luster in the light of Jennifer’s insatiable appetite. Ben Stiller's 'Battle of the Smithsonian' wins him biggest opening of his career.

The Box-Office Top Five
#1 "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" ($70 million)
#2 "Terminator Salvation" ($53.8 million)
#3 "Star Trek" ($29.4 million)
#4 "Angels & Demons" ($27.7 million)
#5 "Dance Flick" ($13.1 million)
Memorial Day saw mankind rally to the call of battle, but not against terminators, as "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" took the top spot at the box office. As the first family-friendly film release since spring's "Monsters vs. Aliens," it was the favorite going into the four-day weekend, but its $70 million haul exceeded studio expectations and the numbers of its predecessor, "Night at the Museum." While it didn't break any Memorial Day records, it's the biggest opening star Ben Stiller has enjoyed in his long career (a career that, coincidentally,...

Chicago – The sequel “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” is, presumably, an effort by director Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum” in 2006 and “The Pink Panther”) and writers Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon (who both wrote the first film) to weave together an exciting and educational film.
Rating: 2.0/5.0 After all, the concept remains clever and plot endless in possibilities. Museum exhibits come to life through ancient magic with wildlife running amuck, significant historical figures repossessed and left to interact as well as all sorts of artifacts renewed and at the disposal of all.
Add to this formula a knockout cast – with Ben Stiller, Amy Adams, Owen Wilson, Hank Azaria, Robin Williams, Steve Coogan, Ricky Gervais, Bill Hader and Jonah Hill – and one can expect hilarity and stimulation.
Instead, the filmgoer will quite amazingly find little engagement in this movie and instead will be confronted with a predictable,...

Amy Adams joins Ben Stiller in a sequel that can stand on its own.

Having missed the first "Night at the Museum" movie — willfully, I'm afraid — I was surprised by how funny and well-made the sequel is, especially for a "family film." "Battle of the Smithsonian" is packed with set-piece scenes of a sometimes uproarious nature and intricately constructed digital action sequences. (In fact, truth be told, the movie has a little too much going on.) And the star, Ben Stiller, who doesn't always rub everybody the right way, is shrewdly positioned here: Apart from a few snappy spotlight moments (a mad verbal wrangle with Jonah Hill as a dim museum guard, and a Three Stooges-style slap-down with a couple of monkeys), Stiller generally — and generously — functions as a traffic cop amid a swarm of sharp comics,...

Chicago – “The Day the Earth Stood Still” is about an alien visitor’s decision to wipe out the human race. And, if an interstellar race actually gets to see this film, it would be hard to blame them for wanting to clean house on planet Earth.
Rating: 1.0/5.0 The original “Day the Earth Stood Still” was a plea for peace. The film was made shortly after the nuclear bombs were dropped on Japan and it was producer Julian Blaustein’s desire to make a metaphorical sci-fi film that led to one of the most influential movies in the history of the genre.
