Last week brought us the news that DC Entertainment was quietly developing a TV series based on Superman's cousin, Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl. Initial reports pointed toward producer Michael Green as being involved, but it was later revealed that Greg Berlanti of .Arrow. and .The Flash. would be teaming up with .Chuck. and .No Ordinary Family. producer Ali Adler for the series. Now, speaking with Cbr, Berlanti confirms the plans for the Supergirl series but refutes earlier claims that they've already begun pitching to networks.

I hope no one thinks Marvel needs to make an Iron Man 4 after Iron Man 3 (read my review here) ends its run with over $1 billion. Of course, continuing on and on with a successful franchise makes sense in the short terms, but if they can continue to mine their comic archives why risk franchise fatigue? The smartest thing Marvel ever did was finding ways to introduce a variety of their comic characters inside their other films and create an attachment from one to the next, even if that attachment was as small as Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury character. Now they have an established superhero world where the introduction of a man born during the Great Depression can still be alive in present day and fight alongside a god from another universe and a radioactive Hulk. In Guardians of the Galaxy we'll get a talking raccoon and something...

Oren Peli, aka "that guy that made Paranormal Activity and got rich even though the movie was pretty much just okay," is banking on his success and now DreamWorks and Michael Green have created a TV show for him set in the Amazon rainforest. Here's the official synopsis:
Quote:
Famed explorer Dr. Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood) went looking for magic deep in the uncharted Amazon and never returned. Now, the shocking truth about his disappearance is out there, somewhere, just waiting to be discovered. To the millions of kids who grew up watching his nature show, Dr. Cole was a hero. To his own son Lincoln (Joe Anderson), he was more of an enigma. Now, six months after he vanished, Lincoln is finally ready to bury the past when Dr. Cole's cagey ex-producer Clark (Paul Blackthorne) film the mission documentary-style.

In the latest of our comprehensive series of reviews of DC Comics' 52 relaunched titles, we take a look at Supergirl #1. Who's it by?
Supergirl #1 is written by Michael Green and Mike Johnson (Superman/Batman) and drawn by Mahmud Asrar (Adventure Comics). What's the history?
Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El was first introduced in 1959's Action Comics #252 by Otto Binder and Curt Swan. The teenage survivor of the Kryptonian Argo City arrived on Earth years after Clark Kent and adopted the secret identity of 'Linda Lee'. The character proved very popular upon her introduction, but by the continuity-changing Crisis on Infinite Earths it was decided that Superman needed to live as a lone Kryptonian on Earth again. This led to Kara's famous death at the hands of the Anti-Monitor. Various (more)...

"She's really in the position of a lot of the new readers to the DC Universe," Mike Johnson, co-writer of the Supergirl series with Michael Green, tells USA Today. "She's new. She doesn't know this universe, and we're right there with her in her head, in her Pov, as she discovers this new Dcu. In her mind, she was on Krypton yesterday. She's really the only character in this new universe who has that perspective where for her, in her mind, this is a backward world that she suddenly woke up in." Adds Green: "Superman got to grow up here and feel like he was a human and slowly discover that he was different, whereas for her, waking up on Earth is a massive disruption in the life she expected — and wanted — for herself. Now it's a question of having to learn to make a new life here. She has...

Now that the first trailer for DC's latest comic book movie adaptation, Green Lantern, has debuted, we have an idea of the tone that director Martin Campbell is going for, how Hal (Ryan Reynolds) and Carol (Blake Lively) will interact and what the legendary Green Lantern costume will look like, but so much still remains a mystery. The trailer only included snippets of footage of Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong as Hector Hammond and Sinestro, respectively, and we only saw a handful of the other, alien, Green Lantern Corps members. Plus, whatever happened to the Clark Kent/Superman cameo?

Last week, we got an update from writer Marc Guggenheim about his creator-owned comics and movie projects "Halcyon" and "Resurrection," but just in case you're not familiar with the two series (though you should be — they're great), there's another little project he co-scripted that certainly is on your radar: the live-action "Green Lantern" movie.
I spoke to Guggenheim a while back (before the "Green Lantern" trailer debuted) about some of the script rumors that popped up over the last year or so, as well as some of the elements of his original script with Greg Berlanti and Michael Green that weren't likely to make the final cut of the film.
I also asked him about some of the Green Lanterns fans are wondering whether they'll see in the film, and though he couldn't give me too many answers about who's in the script, it looks like we can cross one fan-favorite (okay,...

The Casting of Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern in the Warner Bros comic book adaptation put an end of months of speculation about who would take on the role.
The DC comic books feature a Green Lantern Corps covering the entire universe and including several citizens of Earth who have taken the Lantern name since the character was introduced in 1940.
Reynolds will play the Hal Jordan version of Green Lantern, a hotshot pilot who finds a crashed spacecraft with a dying alien called Abin Sur. He is chosen to become the next bearer of an energy-emitting ring and its lantern-like battery.
So what do we know so far about the story and who will be in it?
Firstly, it's worth recapping on the character history, to put the film into context.
Our planet's first Green Lantern was engineer Alan Scott. Next came Hal Jordan, then Guy Gardner, followed by John Stewart and Kyle Rayner.

It appears that Ryan Reynolds has landed the lead role in the live-action “Green Lantern” movie. After a flurry of rumors, speculation and announcements over the last 24 hours regarding who would star in the film, the “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” actor was named as the star of the Martin Campbell-directed film this evening.
Earlier this morning, it was announced that Reynolds was one of three official contenders for the role alongside “The Hangover” star Bradley Cooper and musician/actor Justin Timberlake. According to Variety, “the momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended.”
Reynolds is now set to have the lead role in two heavily anticipated movies based on comic book properties, as it was announced back in May that his portrayal of Marvel Comics’ “Merc With A Mouth,” Deadpool, had earned him (and the character) a solo film. Both...

Canadian actor Ryan "Deadpool" Reynolds has been cast as 'Green Lantern', the starring role in Warner Bros.' upcoming live-action feature based on the DC Comics super-hero, for director Martin "Casino Royale" Campbell. Production is expected to start January 2010. Screenplay is by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green for producer Donald DeLine. Created for DC Comics in the 1940's, the 'Green Lantern' character derives super-abilities from the use of a ring that can transmute green energy into physical matter. The first 'Green Lantern', 'Alan Wellington Scott', debuted in "All-American Comics" #16 (July 1940), riding in a train when a sabotaged bridge causes a derailment. Scott saves himself by hanging onto a green metal lantern that 'speaks' to him, revealing it was once a 'Starheart' meteor that crashed into China, then forged into a lantern. The lantern 'orders' Scott to fashion a ring from its metal, then to touch the ring to the lantern.

During an interview over at Comic Book Resources, writer/producer Marc Guggenheim talked briefly about the forthcoming Green Lantern movie, and how he envisions the core essence of Hal Jordan.
First, however, Guggenheim responded to recent comments made by Joss Whedon, who asserts that DC heroes — with the exception of Batman, who is rooted in pain — are rather removed from humanity and lack its gifts, making those heroes harder for us to relate to.
"Well, here's the funny thing," Guggenheim said. "I agree with the general observation about the characters, [but] I don't agree that it makes for a character that's harder to relate to. Look at Superman. Superman has not exactly proven to be an unpopular character over the years. And I think each character — regardless of whether it comes from Marvel or DC — brings with it its own baggage and its own set of challenges.

Warner Bros and DC Comics' next big-budget feature, Green Lantern — about which a lot of news has been hitting the web in recent weeks — will be made at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney and carry a budget of $150 million.
The script apparently reveals some major battles both on Earth and in space — along with the effects of the emerald power rings — meaning a major effects budget to properly realize all of it.
The film will create about 500 jobs and include a "substantial investment" in digital effects work in Australia.
Green Lantern should be eligible to receive the Australian federal government's 15% location rebate on top of the incentives supplied by the New South Wales government to bring the project to Fox.
Director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) will be at the helm of the comic book's big-screen adaptation, working from a script by Greg Berlanti and Michael Green. Pre-production on Green Lantern...

Yesterday, we speculated that Green Lantern was the DC hero next going before the cameras and MTV’s Splash Page then ran an interview with co-screenwriter Marc Guggenheim that confirms this projection.
“This morning, we sat down to talk Green Lantern,” Guggenheim told MTV, “and we ended up riffing for an hour and a half on another, much more obscure character. Sometimes, you just have to roll with it when inspiration strikes, you know? I’m sure the studio wouldn’t be happy about it, but we’re not going to blow the deadline. We’ll get it in.”
The screenplay was written by Guggenheim, Michael Green (Superman/Batman) and Greg Berlanti (Eli Stone) and after three drafts, they think it’s about ready for Berlanti to direct. Locations have been scouted and production designs have been crafted by Aaron Sims, who is also working on X-Men Origins: Magneto for director David S. Goyer.

Writer/Producer Michael Green has signed a two-year deal Universal Media Studios where he is showrunning the NBC midseason series Kings.
"There is no more important new show to the network and the studio than that," Ums president Katherine Pope told The Hollywood Reporter. The series, inspired by the Biblical story of King Saul and King David, depicts a fictional monarchy and stars Christopher Egan and Ian McShane. The show is currently anticipated to take over the Thursday at 10 spot which ER has held for the last 14 years.

Everyone, that is, except entertainment president Kevin Reilly. When he left and was replaced by executive vice-president Teri Weinberg, she gave the series the go ahead.

There's been a lot of talk about new, darker toned movies being made of DC Comics properties based on the success of The Dark Knight. That's had one aisle of comic fans pretty psyched, as the more mature direction of Batman's big screen adventures have definitely upped the gravitas factor. On the other hand, not every character lends itself to a "dark tone," such as the impending Superman relaunch.
Luckily, it sounds like Green Lantern is going to shine through the blackest night for a full on "respectful approach to the character [of Hal Jordan, and] a loving approach to the entire mythos."
That's according to Marc Guggenheim, the writer of the upcoming Lantern feature. He spoke to Newsarama about the film's progress, saying that "it's pretty far along." The television producer and part-time comic book writer has worked on the script with Greg Berlanti and Michael Green.
"We're reasonably deep into [Green Lantern]," he tells the website.

The untitled novel is set for publication in 2010. A rep for Penguin imprint Philomel says the collaboration "will have all the hallmarks of (Goldman's) magic realism and (Lupica's) heartwarming tales of the underdog."
In addition to his New York Daily News sportswriting, Lupica has written several young adult bestsellers. Goldman's novel "The Princess Bride," which he adapted for the screen, has sold three million copies.
The deal was brokered by Philomel publisher Michael Green (who will edit the novel) with Icm.

Marc Guggenheim, Greg Berlanti and Michael Green are just about done with a rewrite to their Green Lantern feature film script and told Moviehole they anticipate turning it in this coming week.
One of the things that excited Warner Bros. about the proposed project were the production drawings from former comic book artist Brian Murray. He based Hal Jordan on actor David Boreanez, known for Angel but also was Jordan’s voice on the New Frointier animated movie released earlier this year. Carol Ferris was modeled after Sin City’s Carla Gugino.
Boreanez, currently starring on Fox’s Bones, has tested for super-heroes before, first as The Thing in Fantastic Four and later as Superman for Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns.
Now word is bubbing that he may be considered for the live-action version as well.
For George Miller’s stalled Justice League film, Gl was going to be John Stewart...

NBC beat the buzzer, handing out a last-minute pilot order Friday, the same day the WGA set the stage for a writers strike. The network greenlighted "Kings", a contemporary soap loosely based on the story of King David, the Biblical king of Israel.
Francis Lawrence is set to direct the one-hour pilot written by "Heroes" co-exec producer Michael Green. The two will exec produced the Universal Media Studios project with Lawrence's manager, Erwin Stoff.
Set in present day, "Kings" centers on "a regular small-town guy who gets mixed up with the upper crust social and political elite of a monarchy and eventually would become the new king," Green said. "It's a Cinderella story and a story of struggle for power."
The plot of the soap, which will feature magical elements, loosely parallels the story of the biblical David, a shepherd boy who went on to defeat the giant Goliath and become Israel's second king.
"It's a story of the underdog that anyone can relate to," said NBC programming chief Ben Silverman.

Everwood creator Greg Berlanti has signed a deal to co-write and direct a live-action adaptation of DC Comics' superhero Green Lantern for Warner Bros.
Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green also are writing the script, with Donald De Line on board to produce.
Green Lantern is one of DC Comics' mainstay heroes, having been created in 1940. While several incarnations of the character have existed throughout the decades, the movie will focus on the Lantern embodied by Hal Jordan, a test pilot who finds a downed alien spacecraft. A dying alien passes his ring to Jordan, introducing the man to a wider world that includes an interstellar police force known as the Green Lantern Corps and its overseers, the Guardians of the Universe, who live on the planet Oa.
Like any superhero, the Lantern has a weakness, the color yellow, and was known for reciting an oath when charging his ring.
Berlanti met with DC Comics senior vp Gregory Noveck a year ago about bringing the hero to the big screen.
