If there’s one thing I will take away from this years Frightfest it’s that this was the year that saw the tropes of the slasher movie return to the horror genre with a vengeance. From the strong final girl, to insane, and sometimes supernatural, killers and the idea that the horror movie is as metal as Iron Maiden… so gloriously metal… And nowhere are those three more prevalent than in Some Kind of Hate.
Reminscent of Trick or Treat, the 1986 heavy metal horror starring Marc Price; and Savaged, the supernatural revenge thriller that played Frightfest Glasgow in 2014, Some Kind of Hate sees tightly wound Lincoln – a...

My original plan was to publish a list of my ten most anticipated films screening at the Fantasia Film Festival but considering the incredible line-up this year, I find it near impossible to narrow it down to only ten. So instead I’ve decided to select one movie a day, or better yet, the movie that you should choose if you only had time for one.
Day 1. Tangerine
Christmas Eve in Tinseltown!
If you’re not familiar with director Sean Baker start taking notes. The man is a genius and one of the best indie American filmmakers working today. In Starlet, Baker spun an unlikely friendship between a young porn actress and an old lady in the San Fernando Valley. In Prince of Broadway, he chronicled the struggles of a hustler balancing fatherhood while working in New York’s wholesale district. Baker’s work avoids labels by refusing to adhere...

Do they teach budding directors how to shoot a killer pumpkin at film school? Maybe they should start, given that's just the scenario British filmmaker Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) faced while overseeing his segment of the new anthology horror movie, Tales of Halloween. Due to be released this coming Halloween, the film comprises ten interconnected terror tales, with other participating directors including Lucky McKee (The Woman), Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III & IV) and the delightful Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider). The ensemble cast, meanwhile, features Pat Healy, Barry Bostwick, Noah Segan, Booboo Stewart, Greg Grunberg, Clare Kramer,...

Other websites choose not to post about certain genre Kickstarter projects because of the accessibility it gives to aspiring and even established directors. Some view it as a “handout”, I don’t feel that way. Horror has always felt very communal to me. Fans of the genre stick together through thick or thin. There are success stories and there are also horror stories of the platform and rarely do genre sites post follow up posts about the Kickstarter projects they post after the deadline passes. In this post, I revisit all of the projects we posted on the site (some of them, I personally backed).
This list is organized in the order of when we posted about the projects:

While this project was successful, the last update I could find was from Harvest’s Facebook page on January 18, 2012:

A pair of upcoming symposia on fright filmmaking and scripting will offer California residents a chance to find out how to get into the genre business, or just listen to their favorite filmmakers dish about the craft. The first takes place Saturday, October 17, when the Los Angeles Screenwriting Expo will be hosting a Horror Writing Panel.
The event, which takes place at the Wilshire Grand Hotel (930 Wilshire Boulevard) from 2-3:30 p.m. on the 17th, features a lineup of exciting fear filmmakers: The House Of The Devil’s Ti West (pictured), Adam Green of Hatchet and the upcoming Frozen, Abominable’s Ryan Schifrin and Eduardo Sanchez, co-creator of The Blair Witch Project whose new Seventh Moon hits DVD this week from Lionsgate. They’ll speak in depth about the craft of creating a successful horror screenplay—and the best part is, it’s only $6. For more info, click here.

It's been a while since my last blog as I have been (happily) swimming in the wake of Laid To Rest promotion. I'm really honored that Fangoria is presenting a double feature this Saturday, May 9th of Laid To Rest and my first film Lightning Bug. It's been so long since I've seen the latter and things have changed so much that I'm excited to watch it with a crowd again. But this weekends' affair has got me thinking about movies large and small and how they get fed to the hungry masses at hand. A simple question keeps coming to mind:
Are the Best films the ones that play in big multiplexes on 2500 screens before going to DVD? Certainly the most "successful" films fit that bill, but really? The Best films? Everyone you meet when they discover you have a film coming out will invariably ask you if it's...

Today a brand new poster for Stuart Gordon's Stuck (trailer: review) found its way online and can be viewed by reading beyond the break. The film recently screened for critics here in Los Angeles where Bc, among other writers, all seemed to really enjoy it (I guess we can't all agree, can we?) Brandi (Mena Suvari) hits Tom (Stephen Rea) with her car on her way home from a night of partying. With Tom still alive but lodged through her windshield, she promises to go a hospital but then decides to leave Tom to die in her garage as she realizes that her future is inextricably tied to her victim. Realizing this plan, Tom knows escape is his only chance for survival.
