One refreshing change of pace at the 30th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival is the first-ever Variety Artisans Award showcase, honoring below-the-line talent from some of the year's most celebrated films. It's a nice extension of the trade's recent long-time-coming crafts initiative and, like the reading of nominees for all 24 Oscar categories on the air last month, keeps these men and women in a well-deserved spotlight. Being honored for cinematography will be "Into the Woods" Dp Dion Beebe. It's a fair choice getting away from some of the more frequently recognized names of the year. I thought the work was handsome but couldn't be helped by sets that never seemed to transcend the proscenium. For costume design, there's Steven Noble for "The Theory of Everything." An interesting note on that work is the subtlety of it, as Noble has talked about outfitting actor Eddie Redmayne in such a way...

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. Check out the full list of nominees below,...

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

We're winding down the year-in-review game here at HitFix as 2014 draws to a close. For whatever reason I took a year off of the ballot/superlatives posts, but I'm back with those personal assessments of the best of the year, beginning today with my top picks across the Academy's 24 categories. Check back in tomorrow for a list of winners from this lot, as well as others in a slew of peripheral categories. And of course, feel free to let us know what your Oscar ballot would look like in the comments section below. (Oh, and naturally it goes without saying this post is living in a parallel reality where I'm not confined to a specific branch for nominations and reign supreme over all categories with selections for each.) We'll find out if the Academy agrees with any of this when the 87th annual Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 15. *** Best...

Last night, lots of people headed off to London's Royal Opera House, where Stephen Fry hosted the British Academy Film Awards. That's the BAFTAs to you and us.
The BAFTAs used to be one of those ceremonies where people sent speeches to be read by other people, but these days, it seems really quite posh. Most of the nominees seemed to be in attendance, even those who didn't win, and if it carries on at this rate, the BBC may actually show us the whole event, rather than editing it down to two hours, to be shown a further two hours after it actually took place.

First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). The Oscar race for makeup and hairstyling has been very contentious. Making the shortlist were "American Hustle," "Dallas Buyers Club," "The Great Gatsby," "Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters," "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa," and "The Lone Ranger." However, the list of snubs include "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," "Rush," "12 Years a Slave," "Lee Daniels' The Butler," "Oz the Great and Powerful," and "Star Trek Into Darkness," and "Man of Steel." Among the three likely nominees to emerge from Saturday's "bakeoff" are "American Hustle," "The Great Gatsby," and "Bad Grandpa," though Johnny Depp's elderly Tonto might emerge as a rival to "Bad Grandpa." David O. Russell's "American Hustle," of course, is steeped in 70s fashion: Studio 54, Cosmo covers, and Chanel ads adorned by Catherine Deneuve. For Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence, Evelyne Noraz (makeup) and Katherine Gordon (hair) focused on glitter, perms, and plunging necklines.

If you've seen the ads for "American Hustle," you already know there's some epic hair happening. The good folks at New York magazine's fashion blog, The Cut, chatted up Evelyne Noraz and Katherine Gordon, the artists behind the elaborate coifs perched on the heads (and chests) of David O. Russell's stars.
Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper show off some rather unique coifs, finely manicured facial hair, and even carefully tended chest hair. These two dudes spent about three hours in hair and makeup, getting everything from their facial hair to their head and chest hair fixed up.
Noraz, who worked as the makeup department head, told The Cut, " They did a lot with Bradley Cooper. They made him darker. He was probably in there every day for two to two-and-a-half hours. Lori McCoy-Bell rolled his hair with perm rollers, he was under the dryer every day... Christian [Bale] was very involved with creating his look,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released its annual list of invited new members, and it’s clear they’re continuing to try to make their membership younger. On the list alongside veterans like John Hawkes and David Duchovny are a slew of twentysomethings, including Mia Wasikowska, Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Lawrence, and Rooney Mara. The Board of Governors also decided to extend an invitation to Restrepo codirector Tim Hetherington, the first time Academy membership has been bestowed posthumously. As a side note, it’s also a hoot to now say the phrase Oscar voter Russell Brand.

Beverly Hills, CA . Those who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2011 to the Academy.s roster of members.

The Academy.s membership policies would have allowed a maximum of 211 new members in 2011, but as in other recent years, several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them. Voting membership in the organization has now held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.
In an unprecedented gesture, the list of new members includes documentary filmmaker Tim Hetherington, who was killed in action in Libya in April.
