- Godber successfully auditioned for a part in The Full Monty (1997) but turned it down to allow him more time to work on the filming of Up 'n' Under (1998). He recommended Mark Addy in his place.
- His eldest daughter, Elizabeth Godber, makes a brief cameo appearance in Up 'n' Under (1998).
- His play, "Bouncers," performed at the Next Lab Theatre in Chicago, Illinois was awarded the 1991 Joseph Jefferson Award for Production of a Play.
- His play, "Salt of the Earth," at the Famous Door Theatre in Chicago, Illinois was awarded the 1991 Joseph Jefferson Award Citation for Production-Play.
- He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2018 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to the Arts. He is a writer and director in Swanland, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.
- John Godber was also heavily influenced by Brecht as shown throughout Teechers and Bouncers due to the common fourth wall breaks and constantly keeping the audience on their feet.
