Whether it’s a bizarre death, a gasp-worthy plot twist, or a totally unexplained disappearance, character exits in television can certainly be entertaining. Conversely, they can sometimes cause frustration and heartbreak to those watching. Either way they remind us that for fictional characters, circumstances are always temporary, and for actors, the next gig is just around the corner. Below are eight character send-offs that play on repeat in the minds of TV lovers everywhere. Some spoilers ahead! Ben Feldman as Michael Ginsberg, “Mad Men” One of the more shocking and tragic character send-offs in “Mad Men” came during its final season. It all started when a new computer was introduced to the office of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. Paranoia overcame quippy copywriter Michael Ginsberg, as he was convinced that the machine was turning his co-workers gay and would soon render his position obsolete. During this emotional breakdown, he even convinces...

A review of tonight's "Mad Men" coming up just as soon as I get you a map to the powder room... "I had a plan, which was no plans!" -Richard Early in "The Forecast," Don gets into an argument with his realtor Melanie, who can't be bothered to conceal her disgust with her client. As they study the barren living room tableau created by Marie Calvet's thievery, Don insists that it's a selling point, because potential buyers can more easily imagine their own furniture in the space. Melanie dismissively wonders if he's ever sold an apartment, and in a later conversation suggests, "this place reeks of failure." Don again shrugs off her contempt and says, "I have a good feeling about things." In a way, Don is proven right, since Melanie winds up selling the place at the asking price. But that empty apartment — and Don's reaction to realizing...

Mad Men has always been, among many other things, about the exit of the old guard and the entrance of the new — and the acceleration of that transition by the mood and the movements of the Sixties. The pilot, set in 1960, finds the Sterling Cooper higher-ups scrambling to locate a Jewish employee within their ranks so that he can sit in on a meeting with a potential Jewish client, Rachel Menken (Maggie Siff). “Have we ever hired any Jews?” asks Roger Sterling (John Slattery), whose place at the top was guaranteed to him as a birthright. “Not on my watch!” jokes Don Draper (Jon Hamm), oozing the casual anti-Semitism of the era. Just seven years later, those same men hire a Jewish copywriter, Michael Ginsberg (Ben Feldman) — who in turn be...

When AMC announced they were splitting the final season of Mad Men into two seven-episodes halves, similar to what had been done with Breaking Bad in its last two years, I could only roll my eyes in disdain. The splitting of cable drama seasons is often an annoyance, and while it can work out fine with some series – The Walking Dead and its enormous fanbase seem to have adjusted just fine to the strategy over the years, in part because they’ve being doing it since the second season – it feels especially cumbersome and unnecessary when imposed upon the final years of a long-running drama that has long-since established a workable format.
It’s easy to forget that Breaking Bad seriously struggled with the half-length season format in its 2012 episodes, given how utterly brilliant the final eight hours were in 2013, but where Vince Gilligan and company had so carefully cultivated...

If you were hoping for AMC to commission a buddy series featuring the tales of Stan Rizzo and Michael Ginsberg once Mad Men went off the air, or wanted Bobby and Sally: The College Years to find a place on the network, you may be out of luck. In an interview with Deadline, Mad Men‘s tight-lipped creator Matthew Weiner revealed that once the show’s final episode airs in 2015, the end is set in stone. In other words, it is not pulling a Breaking Bad, which has spinoff Better Call Saul coming in November 2014.
As to where he goes from the offices of Sterling Cooper, Weiner explains that he has nothing else planned for his post-Mad Men career.
“For me, I need to take a break. That’s really what I’m planning to do,” he says. “It’s scary because I’m stepping off a moving treadmill...

"Mad Men" aired its spectacular Season 7 mid-season finale on Sunday, making the show's 2015 end date even more real and even more of a bummer. What will life be like without Don Draper and company?
And now dreams of a possible spinoff have been pretty much dashed, too. In an interview with Deadline, creator and writer Matthew Weiner revealed that he's not working on any follow-up to the beloved AMC drama.
"I am not planning a sequel and I do not have my foot deep in anything else," he explained. "I love that people are trying to project and guess what the storytelling is. I'm writing the finale today as I was yesterday and it's set in stone."
But we can pretend, right? Maybe he'll see this, get inspired, and reconsider?
Here are 5 "Mad Men" spin-offs we would like to see go down after its series finale:
1. Sally: On My Own Terms

Mad Men's last couple of episodes have been consumed with anxiety about the future, culminating last week with Michael Ginsberg's self-administered nipplectomy. But with the decade, the season, and the show itself moving closer to the end, this week's installment — titled "The Strategy" — looked ahead and saw that, to cite the theme song of an iconic Seventies heroine, we're gonna make it after all. There are still eight episodes remaining — one this year, seven to come in 2015. But there were at least a couple of moments in this...

Non-Mad Men watchers at NBC’s upfronts presentation for A to Z this week may have been a little baffled by all the nipple talk surrounding clean-shaven star Ben Feldman. But for fans of AMC’s prestige drama, on which Feldman has played the squirrelly Michael Ginsberg for the past three seasons, a shocking bloody nipple was all anyone could talk about.
Ginsberg had always been a little off, mentally; it was part of his unique charm. But the agency’s installation of a giant Ibm computer represented an existential threat to him, professionally and psychologically, and he began...

“I think a therapist would have a field day with someone like Michael Ginsberg,” actor Ben Feldman told Vulture yesterday, following his nipple-mutilation episode of Mad Men. To which we said: challenge accepted! Psychiatrist Dr. Paul Puri has analyzed Mad Men characters for Vulture before (see here, here, and here), though prior to Sunday night, none of them had been literally wheeled out of the Sc&P office in a gurney. Ginsberg’s total psychotic break can be read as a metaphor for the breakdown of American society in 1969, but how does it read from a medical perspective? We spoke with Dr. Puri about schizophrenia, castration metaphors, and Ginsberg’s likely prognosis (which is actually not so bad).Let’s begin at the beginning: Ginsberg had a rough start in life. He was born in a concentration camp.Everybody says he was born in a concentration camp because of that speech in “Far and Away.

7.5 The Runaways
Michael Ginsberg isn’t the first Sc&P employee to be wheeled out of the office on a gurney and nor, one suspects, will he be the last. Between heart attacks, hangings and ride-on lawnmowers (not to mention out-of-office car accidents and accidental blindings) the Sterling Cooper workforce has suffered more than its fair share of wounds.
Ginsberg is the first, however, to be wheeled out in restraints after uttering what has to be the creepiest and most Lynchian line in Mad Men’s seven year history. Ben Feldman’s matter-of-fact delivery of “It’s my nipple. It’s the valve” was a moment of unexpected grotesquery, a dark conclusion to last week’s manic couch comedy and a reminder from Mad Men that civilised man is...

A review of tonight's "Mad Men" coming up just as soon as my computer's making me a homo... "I know what he likes." -Megan What a strange episode of "Mad Men" was "The Runaways," full of long-lost characters like Stephanie, strange bedfellows (sometimes quite literally), desperation plays and the mental disintegration of poor Michael Ginsberg. By the time he presented his severed nipple to Peggy in a box — in an episode that also featured a threesome and Sally being injured in a sword fight of sorts — I began wondering if I hadn't somehow left tonight's "Game of Thrones" on for an extra hour. The show has done crazier episodes — Roger taking LSD, or Don turning into Richard Speck — but they ultimately felt more cohesive even with all their weirdness, where "The Runaways" at times felt like a collection of odd ideas all placed into the same episode in the hope that they would fit together.

Last week's Mad Men episode didn't bother to hide its 2001: A Space Odyssey fixation; it was named 'The Monolith," for Pete Campbell's sake! The spirit of Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke presided over this week's episode — "The Runaways" — as well, however, and not just the scene where Michael Ginsberg lip-reads a conversation between Lou Avery and Jim Cutler in the glassed-in box that house's the firm's state-of-the-art computer. 2001 eventually develops into a fable about a machine that, given a semblance of human consciousness, develops some of the less admirable,...

Mad Men’s season premiere on Sunday night, titled “Time Zones,” picked up less than a year after the events in last season’s finale in which Don Draper (Jon Hamm) was put on a sabbatical after a cringe-worthy pitch to Hershey executives.

The episode opens with Freddy Rumsen (Joel Murray) testing out a pitch for Accutron for Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) In her Sterling Cooper & Partner’s office. She’s impressed with the direction he’s going in, and cleans it up with the simple catchphrase – “Accutron, it’s time for a conversation.” After her meeting with Rumsen, who’s freelancing for the ad firm, Peggy heads to a status meeting with Lou Avery, who’s serving as Don’s replacement for the time being.

Between Don going back to his cheating ways and Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination, Stan Rizzo's (Jay R. Ferguson) beard seems to be the only bright spot in the dark "Mad Men" Season 6 thus far.
Ferguson told Vulture that his mane was even wilder before the season began.
"When I showed up I looked like a cross between Jeremiah Johnson and Tom Hanks in 'Castaway,'" Ferguson joked. "It was too much. Way too much. Double what you see on the show is how big it was, so obviously they trimmed it down to where they wanted."
Although "Mad Men" recently finished shooting Season 6, Stan is having a hard time departing with his beloved beard.

After the wild antics of last week, the most recent episode of Mad Men took a much darker turn when it dealt with the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Between the race riots, general fear and loss of hope, this installment was so depressing that by the end we were longing for the good old days of straight up aimless existential despair. Needless to say, most of the characters were too bummed out to engage in their usual sex, drugs and rock shenanigans, but we tried our best to bring you the best (or worst) from Don and the gang.

From Harry Crane's (Rich Sommer) new mutton chops to Roger Sterling's (John Slattery) silver fox-y sideburns to Stan Rizzo's (Jay R. Ferguson) Jim Morrison-inspired beard, it's been a hairy year so far on "Mad Men" Season 6.

Michael Ginsberg may be the newbie enthusiastic go-getter at Sterling Draper Cooper Pryce, but Ben Feldman, the man behind the "Mad Men" character, wishes he could step into someone else's shoes sometimes.
When a fan asked Feldman on HuffPost Live who he'd like to play if he wasn't Ginsberg, Feldman joked "Bertram Cooper," before admitting he dreams about being Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser) for a day.
"I like playing dicks," Feldman said on HuffPost Live. "I'd like to think of it as playing against type. I'm sure a lot of my friends would disagree, but I like stirring the pot and it's always fun to kind of play the contrarian. I think Vinny does a really great job of that, but I'd love to have his job for a day or two, sure."
Tune in for the two-hour premiere of "Mad Men" on Sunday, April 7 at 9 p.m. Et on AMC.

The sixth season of "Mad Men" has a premiere date, and will once again launch with a two-hour episode.
The Emmy-winning series will premiere at 9 p.m. Et Sunday, April 7 on AMC. It will move to its regular 10 p.m. home the following week.
"To be able to continue exploring the stories of these characters for a sixth season is an amazing opportunity," creator Matthew Weiner says. "We love mining this world and look forward to bringing the audience stories that we hope will continue to both surprise and entertain them."
Weiner wrote the two-hour season premiere, and executive producer Scott Hornbacher directed it. Series lead Jon Hamm directed the second episode of the season.
Per usual, AMC and Weiner are keeping all details about the new season under wraps. The network does note, though, that Ben Feldman, who plays Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce copywriter Michael Ginsberg, is now a regular member of the cast.

According to Deadline.com, "Mad Men" is doing a two-day shoot in Hawaii. Details of the episode's plot have yet to be revealed, but it will likely be the Season 6 premiere -- and Don (Jon Hamm) and Megan Draper (Jessica Pare) are probably the lucky vacationing pair.
As for what else is to come in the series' upcoming season, the actors claim creator Matthew Weiner has completely kept them in the dark.

Well if you hadn't really heard of Homeland prior to this weekend, you probably have by now. The Showtime series pulled off a major upset at the 64th Annual Emmy Awards last night, winning a large chunk of the major awards in the Drama category over favourites like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. Claire Danes and Damian Lewis both took home awards for Lead Actress and Actor in a Drama Series, while the show also broke Mad Men's four-year win streak for Outstanding Drama Series. Elsewhere, Aaron Paul won his second Emmy for his supporting performance as Jesse Pinkman on Breaking Bad, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus won Best Lead Actress in a Comedy for Veep. Modern Family still took the Outstanding Comedy Series, however, while the HBO movie Game Change took the Outstanding Mini-Series or TV Movie. Kevin Costner did manage to pick up some...

The Emmys are approaching fast, and before you start clamoring for Bryan Cranston or Lena Dunham to win big, maybe you should take time to inspect the less publicized nominees. (How you'll clap and scroll simultaneously is beyond me.)

What's coming up in Season 2 of "Girls"? Zosia Mamet may know, but she's not spilling the beans.
"The show is going great," Mamet, who plays Shoshanna on the show, told People. "[But there's] nothing I can share. I'm sworn to secrecy. I’m wearing a taser around my ankle. Just kidding."
"Girls" isn't the only hit series working hard to keep details under wraps.
In an interview with The La Times, "Mad Men" actor Ben Feldman opened up about staying tight-lipped on the upcoming season.
"I know nothing about the sixth season," Feldman, who plays newcomer Michael Ginsberg, said. "Whether you’re never going to see me again on the show or whether 'Mad Men' will be a one-man show starring Ben Feldman is nothing I could ever speak of ... you feel like you’re a member of Seal Team Six when you’re shooting."

Mad Men star Ben Feldman has revealed that he relished filming his character Michael Ginsberg's clashes with Don Draper (Jon Hamm). The AMC series' fifth season saw junior copywriter Ginsberg openly chastise Don Draper over Draper's perceived lack of passion for his work. In an interview with The Huffington Post, Feldman joked that he initially got the feeling that the tension carried over onto the Mad Men set. "When [Hamm is] in character, he's in character, and there were moments where I was wondering, 'Wait, does Jon kind of hate me?'" Feldman recalled. He continued: "They're sort of one and the same when you're on set shooting. But Jon's a great actor, really intelligent. He directed my first episode, so I felt a little more comfortable by the time we (more)...

When Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) told Don Draper (Jon Hamm) that she was leaving Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, "Mad Men" viewers weren't the only who got choked up.

Just as "Mad Men" fans begin coming to terms with the fact that they won't be seeing the employees of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce for some time, Sir Richard Branson's airlines pop Michael Ginsburg into a new romantic comedy.
Virgin Airlines (Virgin America, Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia) debuted "Departure Date," a short film starring Ben Feldman (Ginsburg on "Mad Men") and Nicky Whelan as in-flight lovers. According to Ad Week, it's the first short to be filmed at 35,000 feet.
"Departure," which was produced by the airlines, ad agency Eleven and Virgin Produced (the company's in-house media arm), cost $1 million to make. Virgin is reportedly negotiating a TV deal for the ad/film. Kat Coiro ("L!fe Happens") directed, but the most interesting thing about the project is its unlikely list of supporting actors: Janeane Garofalo, Luis Guzman, Philip Baker Hall and Max Brown all make appearances in the short.

I have friends who’ve proclaimed the fifth season of Mad Men to be the show’s best yet. I have colleagues (both at EW and elsewhere) who’ve felt the season started with some of the show’s strongest episodes ever (“Signal 30,” “Far Away Places”), only to drift into grey angst, needless tragedy, and too-obvious thematic unity in its final episodes. And I’ve read many comments on our recap message boards that have expressed in quite colorful terms that this entire season has been ruined by the singular presence of Don Draper’s new wife, the well-adjusted, self-assured (or gap-toothed and petulant,...

It began with "Zou Bisou Bisou," but the fifth season of "Mad Men" wasn't zou much fun after that.
There were interesting episodes, thoughtful ideas and great scenes scattered throughout the long-awaited fifth season, and of course the acting, directing and production values on the show are still top-notch. It's not that "'Mad Men' is no longer a worthy show, but it's hard to avoid the feeling that "Mad Men" didn't live up to its enormous potential this season. I still love these characters and this world, but, let's face it, this year, as least for a subset of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce fans, something was a little off. Or, at times, a lot off.
It wasn't just the self-absorbed, unpleasant behavior on display that was off-putting -- I certainly expect a generous amount of that on the show, which is, after all, about the sordid and sad...
