At 10.29am on 9 October 2019, Coleen Rooney posted a statement on Twitter. It was crafted with all the narrative tension and dramatic flair of a classic whodunnit. “For a few years now,” it read, a follower on her private Instagram account had been sharing details of her posts with The Sun newspaper. After puzzling over the case for “a long time”, she developed a hunch as to “who it could be” – to prove it, she constructed a simple but dazzlingly effective social media sting operation.
Rooney, the wife of former England captain Wayne, blocked all but one account from viewing her Instagram Stories, then cooked up a handful of fake news titbits: one claimed she was considering flying to Mexico to investigate gender selection treatment, another hinted at a return to TV and a third bemoaned a (fictional) flood at the Rooneys’ new home. These stories made their way into the...

Madrid, Nov 9 (Ians) A quick look at Group B implies that England should be the clear favourites to breeze through into the last-16 of the FIFA World Cup, and a possible three straight wins will allow Gareth Southgate’s side to gain confidence ahead of the knockout rounds.
However, any England fan will tell you it’s rarely as simple as that, with memories of their struggles in a group comprised of the United States, Algeria and Slovenia in 2010 coming to mind, and a look at other teams in the group also suggests things may not be as straightforward as they seem.
On paper, England have a better squad and record than Wales, the United States and Iran. They qualified for Qatar with no real problems and travel as the European Championship runners-up.
Southgate will build his team around striker and captain Harry Kane, and midfielders Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham.

London, Aug 19 (Ians) Sir Alex Ferguson has told a Manchester court he never saw Ryan Giggs lose his temper as he gave evidence defending his ex-player.
The former Manchester United manager, 80, spoke about his relationship at the club with Giggs, who is on trial charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville, reports Dpa.
Sir Alex told court on Friday that Giggs had a “fantastic temperament”, adding: “To have a career as long as he had in a difficult position, in terms of energy, he fulfilled everything we ever wished for.”
He said Giggs was “without doubt the best example we had at the club” and “everyone looked at Ryan Giggs as the number one”.
Asked by Giggs’ barrister Chris Daw if he had ever seen him “lose his temper or become aggressive”, Sir Alex replied: “No.”

Sir Alex Ferguson is arguably the greatest football manager of all-time. His achievements as coach of Manchester United for 27 years are unprecedented in the history of English football, a sport and culture that’s famous for its frequent disregard of managers. Ferguson was a tactical genius, a master of working with and bringing the best out of talent, his skills as a coach leading players such as David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, and Cristiano Ronaldo to otherworldly levels of greatness. There has never been a manager as successful, trophy-wise, and what he did will never be forgotten by Manchester United fans or anyone that loves the sport of football. He is the rare figure that every fan, regardless of background or preferred club, respects and admires as a towering giant of the game.
But he is only human—one day his greatness and mind will no longer be with us. That...

Manchester United are thought to be stepping up their hunt for Real Madrid centre back Sergio Ramos, and are eyeing up a bid for the Spaniard this summer, according to a report from news.ladbrokes.com.
The Red Devils came close to signing Ramos last year, but saw their deal fall flat as he signed a new contract with Real. The 29 year old would certainly cost Louis van Gaal and co. a pretty penny, with reports suggesting a price tag of between £44m and £59m.
According to Ladbrokes, Ramos’ agent has indicated that his client is likely to join whichever club Pep Guardiola is in charge of at the time. The current Bayern Munich boss has recently expressed a desire to manage in England next season, and with Louis van Gaal under immense pressure, he could well find himself in the Old Trafford hot-seat for 2016/17.

Football documentaries - they're a funny old game. Today's fly-on-the-wall peeks into the lives of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo may have marked a welcome return of the genre - but compared to mud-and-studs docs of old, they're as over-polished and blemish-free as one of David Beckham's Armani suits.
And so ahead of Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and co's new BBC documentary series Out of Their League, let's reminisce about some classic football programmes - when the beautiful game felt like less a Nike advert, more like an episode of Bullseye.
1. Graham Taylor gets the sack
After an abysmal 1992 European Championships, England manager needed some positive PR, so the Fa allowed camera crews to follow him round during the entire 1994 World Cup qualification campaign for An Impossible Job.
Whoops: this spectacularly backfired for old Turnip Head, as England were knocked out. But not before Taylor effed and jeffed his way through every single match,...

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has given his blessing to the homeless squatters who have taken up residence in his new hotel and allowed them to stay in the building during the winter.
Former Manchester United star Neville and hotel co-owner Ryan Giggs have received planning permission to transform Manchester's historic stock exchange into a new boutique hotel, but the building was sitting empty as the footballers planned for extensive renovations to take place before opening. Housing activists occupied the site on Saturday (October 17).
Wesley Hall, leader of housing activists Manchester Angels, told the Manchester Evening News that he was left "crying and shaking" after talking to Neville on Sunday.
"What a great guy Gary Neville is," Hall said. "We've been in negotiations with him and things are looking good. He said the main building work isn't taking place until February, so we'll be okay to stay until then."
I'm crying.

Documentary film The Class of 92 documented the journeys of a group of footballers as they went from fledgling youth players to worldwide icons in a matter of years.
Now, a new BBC series shows how Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt are taking on the serious side of football: owning a club.
The five players (minus fellow Class of 92 star David Beckham) star in Out of Their League, a three-part series that follows the new owners of Salford City Fc, after they decided to buy their local club in 2014. The documentary promises to give football fans a rarely-seen close look at how a football club is run, and the challenges that face everyone from the owner to the tea lady.

Despite signing exciting Dutch forward Jeremain Lens earlier this week, Sunderland seem keen to further bolster their attacking options, having been linked with young Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj.
Rumours of the 20 year old’s departure have emerged as a result of his slide down the United pecking order, with Sunderland the bookies’ favourite among a gaggle of suitors including Everton and Real Sociedad.
The young Belgian shone during David Moyes’ brief reign at Old Trafford, but seems to have fallen out of favour under Louis van Gaal. Despite being given the number 11 shirt last worn by Ryan Giggs, he was forced to oversee much of the 2014/15 season from the bench, rarely making an impression in the starting line-up.
Sunderland fans will be more familiar with Januzaj than most. The winger scored two goals at the Stadium of Light in 2013, turning Craig Gardner’s opener into nothing more than a footnote.

Louis Van Gaal has hit out at the media as a few journalists in attendance for United’s latest press conference suggested that there was friction between the Dutchman and his assistant due to Giggs’ underwhelming celebration in their last minute victory over Newcastle.
Ryan Giggs was certainly uncharacteristically still as his boss jumped for joy at Ashley Young’s 89th minute winner but Van Gaal seemed insulted some journalists could make such a big deal out of something so small.
Van Gaal reaction was to respond sarcastically in his attempt to expose the idiocy of the journalist’s suggestion.
“No. We have a very bad relationship. I cannot answer that. I want to have those rumours.
“I am very irritated at this question because everyone can see we have a very good relationship.
“We work very hard together. Not only with Ryan but...

Manchester United may well be the biggest spenders of the summer transfer window, having spent £131.7 million since last season on left-back Luke Shaw, midfielder Ander Herrera, defender Marcos Rojo and his Argentina teammate Angel Di Maria, but there is still plenty of work left to be done at Old Trafford before Monday’s deadline day.
The transfer window will crash shut until January in a little under four days and while United have certainly compensated for the horrors of last summer – in which they signed only Marouane Fellaini this time 12 months ago – they cannot be 100% pleased with their wheeling’s and dealings as we approach next week’s cut-off point.
The likes of Rio Ferdinand and club-captain Nemanja Vidic have not been fully replaced, the experience of Ryan Giggs has gone while more worrying still is the gaping gap in the centre of their midfield, with Fellaini,...

A fresh-faced Ryan Wilson was just cutting his teeth as a professional footballer when Greg Dyke met with the representatives of the “big five” football clubs in England to propose an overhaul of the Football League in 1990, and since then the Welshman has gone on to become Manchester United’s all-time record appearance maker as the Premier League has flourished into the behemoth that it is today.

Manchester United are one of the world’s biggest and most successful football teams and have dominated the British game for the last two decades, winning no fewer than 38 trophies over the last 27 years, including 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns. Because of their success they have been able to sign some of the biggest names in the sport, from ‘King’ Eric Cantona through to Cristiano Ronaldo.
A great number of the players United have signed have gone on to either enjoy tremendous success or become a club legend, with their names still sung from the Stretford End to this day. Players such as Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs will live forever in Old Trafford folklore while the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best and Denis Law have been immortalised in the form of a statue outside the famous stadium.

The recent announcement of Frank Lampard’s Chelsea departure and subsequently shocking loan signing with Premier League Champions Manchester City has left many Blues fans with something of a sour taste in their mouth. After 12 years the former West Ham man has drawn the curtain on a glittering career with the London side including a Champions League and Europa League winners medal, three Premier League titles, four Fa Cups and two League Cups.
After over a decade of performing for the Stamford Bridge faithful however, does his temporary move to the blue side of Manchester make him a traitor? Or will Chelsea fans respect him for wanting to compete at the highest level when the club were obviously unwilling to keep him around? Whatever your thoughts on the 34-year-old’s decision, there is no denying the impact he and his goals have had on Roman Abramovich’s side since...

It’s no accident that signing for Man Utd is considered one of the greatest achievements in football.
As a result the club have boasted some of the greatest stars in the history of the game through the years, with the likes of George Best, Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs leading the club to success, creating moments of wonder for fans of the Old Trafford club in the process. But for all of the top class talent to strut their stuff in the famous red shirt, United line ups have not always been perfect.
Whilst stars such as those have produced some fantastic memories, unfortunately many will not forget the players who have turned out for United who have not quite enjoyed the same fortune and success. The history and prestige of Manchester United is second to none, making the club the Mecca for professional footballers. Being chosen to play for the world’s most famous club is a reality that most footballers can only dream of, but for the lucky few it is a chance to grace the hallowed turf at Old Trafford and play in front of thousands of fans.
However, not every player that joins the Red Devils is littered with the same successes as the likes of Ryan Giggs and David Beckham. The United scouts and managers do make mistakes, and some players turn out to not be as good as they first appeared, while others struggle with the pressure of playing for such a prestigious club and never reach the heights they achieved before moving to Old Trafford.

Manchester United face another season of transition in 2014-15. They are about to start a Premier League campaign with a new manager with new ideas for the second time in as many years, while the ‘old guard’ in Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Ryan Giggs and captain Nemanja Vidic have all left the club.
David Moyes has been sacked after just 10 months into his position following a bitterly disappointing season that saw the Red Devils finish seventh, and in his place has been appointed successor Louis van Gaal. van Gaal has just guided the Netherlands team to a 3rd place finish at the World Cup finals and has now taken over at Old Trafford.
The Dutchman will be expected to guide United back to the top of English football where their fans believe they belong, and the ambitions will be to qualify for the Champions...

This summer is set to be a very exciting one for Manchester United fans, not only because of the arrival of charismatic new manager Louis van Gaal, but because he is set to lead the recruitment drive that United have needed since Cristiano Ronaldo left for Real Madrid in 2009.
After enduring their worst ever Premier League campaign last season which culminated in a seventh placed finish, United are set for a summer of upheaval as first team players move through the door in both directions. Losing the experienced quartet of Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra from the first team over the summer so far means that United are going to need to add quality in several departments.
The main issue is the central midfield area, which has long been considered the weakness of the 13 time Premier League champions. Whilst Ander...

The festival that is the World Cup may be over but don’t despair football fans – the Premier League will be back on our TV screens in a little under a month and for Manchester United supporters that couldn’t come soon enough.
United endured a miserable campaign under David Moyes last time round but with Louis van Gaal in charge there’s every reason for optimism as we prepare ourselves for the opening round of fixtures on August 16, when the Red Devils take on Swansea.
By then, United’s starting XI could look vastly different to the one we’ve grown accustomed to down the years with this summer set to be one of change for the Old Trafford giants. Club captain Nemanja Vidic has gone, as have fellow stalwarts Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand, while Ryan Giggs has finally stepped into retirement.

Rio Ferdinand would still be a key Manchester United player if Ryan Giggs had managed to miraculously bag the manager position at Old Trafford.
It has been revealed that Giggs, who became interim manager for the final few games of a tumultuous season for United under David Moyes, would have offered the defender a new contract had he been given the job permanently. Instead, Rio has joined Harry Redknapp at Queens Park Rangers – the man who gave him his first team chance at West Ham United 18 years ago.
“Rio is a top-class guy – anyone who has watched the TV over the World Cup would see what a world-class act he is, on and off the field,” said Redknapp. “He’s a great role model. I signed him as a 14-year-old, so I know him as well as anyone and I’m just so pleased to have him at the club.

The World Cup is over and Louis van Gaal has finally taken charge at Manchester United – almost two months to the day of being named as David Moyes’s successor. Van Gaal has overseen a successful World Cup campaign with the Netherlands during that period, guiding them to a third place finish, and has now got to work at Old Trafford.
Today, the Dutchman delivered his first ever press conference as Red Devils boss, and there were more than a few interesting revelations as he undertook his media duties for the first time in his reign at United.
Van Gaal answered questions on what would represent a successful season during his first campaign in charge of the club, whether or not he intends to retain the services of Paul Scholes and Phil Neville in his backroom team and when he expects to unveil another new signing.

It’s very rare that footballers please everyone, and in all honesty, it’s becoming an even greater task to please anyone at all. Players are paid so heavily, and seem so far removed from the reality of their fans that they seem entirely alien, and entirely unrelatable, which makes it all the more easy to praise them to super-human levels and hate them as sub-humans when they transgress. Some players repay their fans with loyalty but there’s a select few who have contributed to their own downfall over the years.
Being a one club man is a bizarre occurrence in the modern era of football, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard are amongst a limited group of the games greatest players to have achieved such a feat. They may not be the best individuals, but longevity gains a lot of respect from fans,...

Manchester United is one of the world’s biggest clubs, despite their torrid season last time out, where they finished 7th amid a series of fallouts and poor showings. After 26 years of Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm, it was always going to be a season of transition. They did not play well at all and players like Wayne Rooney nearly left the club, with the majestic Ryan Giggs also retiring.
However, the list of players who regret leaving Man United could still fill several books. These players range from talents full of youthful promise who drifted into obscurity to experienced players who left for pastures new who found out that the grass was not greener on the other side. Sometimes sticking is better than twisting in life. The list of successful one-club men at United like Giggs, Paul Scholes and Bobby Charlton is testament to this fact.

So the worst kept secret in football has now been confirmed. Louis van Gaal is the new manager of Manchester United and Ryan Giggs will be his assistant. While the Welshman may claim to be “thrilled” at being the Dutchman’s number two, the pairing may not necessarily be a match made in heaven.
To give you a flavour of van Gaal’s personality, here are some of his more famous quotes.
“I am who I am: confident, arrogant, dominant, honest, hard-working and innovative.”
“Congratulations on signing the best coach in the world.”
“I am the way I am and I’ve not got an easy-going manner. But I’m not going to change my personality just because some people want me to.”
Bold words indeed and Giggs will have to tread carefully if he is to get on with the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona boss.

Ryan Giggs, the most decorated footballer in the history of the English game and Manchester United’s record appearance holder, has called time on his glittering playing career.
The announcement that he had retired from the game came on a huge day for United yesterday with Louis van Gaal being named manager on a three-year deal with Giggs as his assistant.
His new role at the club means it was untenable for him to continue wearing the famous red jersey and Giggs leaves having won 13 league titles, four Fa Cups and two Champions Leagues, among 34 trophies.
To put his incredible career into context, those 13 league titles are the same amount Arsenal have won as a football club, while only Liverpool have more than the Welshman.
Team-mate Rio Ferdinand really wasn’t exaggerating when he said yesterday that Giggs had “so many gold medals he puts B.

New Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal will be handed a £20 million warchest as he looks to make history this summer, according to the Express.
Van Gaal was at last unveiled as United’s new permanent manager yesterday, taking over from the sacked David Moyes with club legend Ryan Giggs being named as his assistant.
And the club’s board will waste no time in handing the Dutchman a massive transfer kitty, with up to £200 million being freed up to transform the Red Devils into Premier League contenders again.
A £27 million bid for Southampton starlet Luke Shaw has reportedly already been made, but van Gaal won’t stop there as he looks to strengthen in all areas.
With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic leaving the club, Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels is on van Gaal’s radar, as is his Dortmund teammate Marco Reus.

Manchester United confirmed the signing of Louis van Gaal as their new manager this afternoon. Currently managing Holland, van Gaal will take control at Old Trafford after World Cup 2014. He was first linked with the Man United job when then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson was set to retire in 2002, only for Ferguson to have a last minute change of heart. The Dutchman now finds himself tasked with rebuilding the squad following the disastrous tenure of David Moyes, which saw the club suffer an ignominous fall to seventh place after winning the league the preceding year.
Is van Gaal the right man to lead United back to the top? A glance over his CV certainly suggests good things, with him having won virtually everything there is to win at club level during his tenures with Ajax, Barcelona, Az Alkmaar and Bayern Munchen. He plays the...

Louis van Gaal has at last been confirmed as Manchester United’s new manager.
Following a month of speculation as to who would replace the sacked David Moyes, United have announced the appointment of the Dutchman on a three-year contract, with Ryan Giggs as his assistant.
Van Gaal – who will be at this summer’s World Cup as Netherlands coach – will set to work at Old Trafford as soon as Holland are knocked out of the tournament in Brazil.
The Dutchman will be tasked with re-establishing United as a dominant force in England, following a disastrous season under Moyes that saw the club finish seventh and fail to qualify for Europe altogether.
Van Gaal already has an illustrious track record for success, having won titles in three different countries with Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, and will need to bring with him all of...

Ryan Giggs has announced his retirement from football in order to be Louis van Gaal’s assistant at Manchester United, ending his twenty-four-year career as a player.
The decision follows the announcement that van Gaal has been named as the club’s permanent manager on a three-year contract, replacing David Moyes, who was sacked last month.
Giggs said in an open letter announcing his retirement as a player:
“I would like to take this opportunity to announce my retirement from professional football and embark upon a new and exciting chapter in my life, as assistant manager of Manchester United.
I am immensely proud, honoured and fortunate to have represented the biggest club in the world 963 times and Wales 64 times. My dream was always to play for Manchester United, and although it saddens me to know I won’t be pulling on a United jersey again as a player,...
