From the beginning, sound mixer Tom Fleischman knew “The Irishman” was going to be “a quiet, restrained movie, and there weren’t going to be a lot of flashy moments.” But the lack of “big, huge sound sequences” didn’t mean it would be an easy movie to mix. Watch our exclusive video interview with Fleischman above.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, the Netflix release casts Robert De Niro as Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, a truck driver-turned mob hitman pulled between the powerful forces of Mafia honcho Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) and union bigwig Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino). The film is “really about the intimacy of the scenes between the characters,” Fleischman reveals, so it was important to “keep the quality of their voices and the performances as pure as possible, without any distractions.”
Because of this, Fleischman’s soundscape was “very narrow and very focused.

Given the decades-spanning narrative of “The Irishman,” visual effects supervisor Pablo Helman had an unenviable task: turn back the clock for septuagenarians Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. Martin Scorsese and film editor Thelma Schoonmaker “really stressed the idea of intimacy” in “The Irishman,” explains supervising sound editor and mixer Eugene Gearty. So in a way they “wanted to strip away what most of us [sound designers] do for a living.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Gearty above.

The film was a passion project for Scorsese 12 years in the making, an epic story about how low-level truck driver Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro) became an enforcer for Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino) and mob boss Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci). It’s adapted from Charles Brandt‘s nonfiction book “I Heard You Paint Houses,” which posits that Sheeran was involved in Hoffa’s disappearance in the 1970s.
Although on paper it sounds similar to Scorsese’s “GoodFellas” (1990), “The Irishman” is more mournful and therefore quieter. “Sound wanted to get out of the way,...

Sound has been an essential part of filmmaking for nearly ninety years, yet is the art and the craft of sound mixing and sound editing is not especially appreciated by modern cinephiles, including this writer. But the recent release of Bill Pohland’s double-sided Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy caused me to stand to stand up and take notice of the film’s truly exception sonic wizardry, which uplifts the film, enhancing the story and giving a voice to the characters’ souls, which too often are unable to speak for themselves.
The most obvious use of sound in a movie about the life of Beach Boys songwriter Brian Wilson, the musical genius behind countless hits and the milestone album Pet Sounds, is obviously going to be in the music, and Love & Mercy does not disappoint there. The film begins with credits set to the pleasing tones of mid-‘60s Beach Boys pop-rock,...

If you didn't tune in for the Academy Awards last night, here's a short breakdown of what you missed: William Shatner showed up from the future, Jennifer Lawrence tripped and fell, and Michelle Obama co-presented the award for Best Picture. It was kind of a weird night, but for the most part, the hardware was handed out to all of the expected parties. Argo won Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor and Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress. If there was a surprise, it was that Life of Pi walked away with the most awards (4) including Best Director for Ang Lee. Zero Dark Thirty got shut out of everything except for Best Sound Editing (in a rare tie with Skyfall). Quentin Tarantino was also a pleasant surprise for Best Original Screenplay. What did you think of this year's Oscars? What was the highlight of the night? How would you rate Seth McFarlane as host?...

Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain nailed the red carpet, apparently, and Sandra Bullock did wonderful things with a diamond hair-clip, while Bradley Cooper and Chris Pine both proved that beards are very much the hot thing right now. But the big events were yet to happen inside the La venue, as the audience sat ready to receive host Seth MacFarlane, and his inevitably cutting humour.

They interviewed this year.s nominees in the Sound Editing category . Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn for Argo; Eugene Gearty for Life of Pi; Wylie Stateman for Django Unchained; and Paul N.J. Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions for the 85th Academy Awards through February 24th, when the winners are announced. Here's our take on best sound editing, which seems like a possible place for the Academy to reward "Zero Dark Thirty" (its really the film's best shot at an Oscar). But it is probably running third to "Skyfall" and "Life of Pi," the latter of which we're betting on to take this and the most overall awards on Oscar night. Nominees and predictions below. The ceremony is over here in London, bringing together some of the finest and most talented people in the film industry under the same roof for one night. The BAFTAs are this country’s highest honour in film, and they have handed out their awards for the 66th time to those whom they deem the most deserving in the past year in film.
And since Ben Affleck is one of my favourite filmmakers of all time, I have been in a brilliant mood tonight, because he’s won (and very much earned) Best Director for Argo, and taken home the Best Film prize alongside his co-producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov. If you haven’t yet seen Argo, I can’t recommend enough how much you should see it as soon as possible.

The Guardian film team predict who will win what at this year's ceremony
On Friday Xan Brooks assessed the field of this year's Bafta contenders and found it "a hazy huddle of frontrunners, all seemingly bobbing back and forth in front of the finish line".
Lincoln is first among equals with 10 nominations. Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Skyfall and Argo all crowd in behind.
The awards momentum has swung from Life of Pi to Lincoln to Argo over the past few weeks. In a competition this close there could be upsets. There should be tears. There must be winners.
So here's what we think will take home scary award masks this year. We've listed all the nominees. Our predicted winners are in bold.

I've enjoyed watching the Academy Awards for as long as I can remember. Even though I don't always agree with their decisions, it's still a fun experience for me. This year Emma Stone and Seth MacFarlane woke up at the buttcrack of dawn to give us the nominations for the 85th Academy Awards, I however didn't wake up to watch because I was just too damn tired.
There's a lot of great movies that were nominated this year and Lincoln leads the pack with 12 nominations which isn't surprising at all. Life of Pi ended up getting 11 noms, Les Miserables got 8, Silver Linings Playbook got 8 as well, Argo ended up with 7, Zero Dark Thirty has 5, Skyfall got 5, Django Unchained got 5 and The Avengers got 1.
There aren't many surprises this year, some might think that Beasts of the Southern Wild was a surprise, but there's been so much ridiculous hype for the...

Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone took the stage at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills this morning to announce this year's Academy Award nominations, and they played out almost exactly as everyone expected. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln led the way with 12 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and another Best Actor nod for Daniel Day-Lewis. Ang Lee's Life of Pi was up for 11 awards, while David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook and Tom Hooper's Les Miserables received 8 nominations apiece. There were a total of 9 Best Picture nominees this year, and if there were any surprises they would probably be Beasts of the Southern Wild and Amour. Django Unchained was also in the mix, although Quentin Tarantino was ignored for Best Director. On the bright side, Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams were all recognized for their performances in The Master, although the movie itself received no love.
