Plot: Walden Dean an unassuming court stenographer in a small southern town, when he discovers he is dying, he decides to exact revenge on criminals who escaped their prosecution
Review: Emile Hirsch is one of those actors that, no matter the film, his performances stand out. While he plays the straight man very well, I’ve always enjoyed him more when he goes the more “out there” route. And his role as Walden is certainly a weird one. Walden Dean is a courtroom stenographer obsessed with breaking the typing world record. But when he’s told he’s dying, he decides he can no longer be an impartial observer, and takes matters into his own hands. And his sense of justice is quite…violent.
Don’t go into Walden expecting some kind of stereotypical trajectory of “Man takes justice into his own hands.” Sure, there are absolutely elements that feel...

"I hear innocence, and I hear evil. Sometimes... evil walks away." Uncork'd has revealed the trailer for a film called Walden, a revenge thriller written & directed by Mick Davis. This is getting a limited theatrical release in November before heading to VOD to watch. Walden Dean, an unassuming court stenographer in a small southern town, he discovers he is dying. So he decides to exact revenge on criminals who escaped their prosecution. The poster art for this has a "Dexter" vibe, which is probably what they're aiming for anyway. The "scales of justice" in blood is amusing, too. Starring Emile Hirsch as the titular Walden, with Shane West, Kelli Garner, Tania Raymonde, Steve Coulter, & David Keith. While this has a good concept, the footage looks like a made-for-tv Saturday night special presentation. Not much to worth watching here. // Continue Reading ›...

This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in April, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include an anthology, a creature-feature, some found footage, and two slashers.
The House of the Dead (1978)
Directed by Sharron Miller.
The House of the Dead — also known as Last Stop on 13 Street and Alien Zone — is an American stab at an Amicus-style anthology film. Shot in Oklahoma with students from Osu, this low-budget horror omnibus does a creditable job of capturing the macabre spirit of The House That Dripped Blood and The Vault of Horror.

Just as film and TV have the Oscars and the Emmys, The Podcast Academy is positioning the Ambies to become the event of the year for the podcast industry as well as the newest fixture of Hollywood awards season, complete with shiny statuettes and a swanky ceremony that, for at least one evening, compels podcasters to dress for the camera.
Hosted by Larry Wilmore, the annual event’s third edition is taking place March 7 at the Westgate Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The company to beat will be Audible, which received a total of 19 nominations across the 26 Ambies categories, including several nods for podcast of the year (see below).
The Podcast Academy received a record 1,700 submissions this year, which were narrowed down by a blue-ribbon panel of judges — who apply every year to be part of the panel — to determine the nominees in each category. From there, voting opened up...

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Matt tells a story about how "What Josiah Saw" attacks at the most unexpected moment).
Marvel's usage of mid-credits and end-credits sequences has become a cultural phenomenon. We sit attentively in our seats, reading 2nd Unit Director and Digital Effects Artist names, anticipating which superhero cameo awaits. We expect to be shocked and startled by MCU reveals — but that's a specific studio franchise strategy. Indie horror flicks don't usually embrace the tactic because what's the point? Right?
Au contraire. Let's sit down for Scariest Scene Ever storytime.
Vincent Grashaw's "What Josiah Saw" is one of Shudder's latest new additions, a homestyle Americana thriller that travels multiple genres. The kind of film without sequel intentions nor requires further explanations once the finale wraps.

Starring Robert Patrick, Nick Stahl, Scott Haze, and Kelli Garner. I really like this trailer, promising one hell of a creepy, eerie Southern Gothic thriller. While audiences’ won’t be seeing Andrew Dominik’s Marilyn Monroe biopic till 2022, author Joyce Carol Oates, whose novel “Blonde” is the basis for the film, apparently has. Oates took to Twitter on Sunday to praise director Dominik as well as star Ana de Armas.
Oates called the film “an exquisite portrait of Marilyn Monroe by Ana de Armas & director Andrew Dominic; one without the other could perhaps not have worked this magic. the tone of the film is hard to classify, not surreal but not totally realistic, not “horror” but suffused with the dread of horror.”
Rumors have swirled on social media with regards to how Dominik approached the feature, including unsubstantiated claims that the movie is heavily sexual and includes a significantly violent rape scene. Neither Dominik nor Netflix have responded to those claims, though based on Oates’ continual praise for the movie it seems evident he’s...

Trauma seems to, unfortunately, affect us all. No matter the degree of severity, no matter if you believe you’ve moved past it, trauma lingers like a bad taste in the mouth. Trauma in childhood especially can have effects that last a lifetime, and that’s exactly what director Vincent Grashaw explores in his latest film, What Josiah Saw. Written by first-time feature writer Robert Alan Dilts, the film delves into how childhood trauma manifests in people throughout their lives in different ways. It’s the type of trauma that is impossible to cure, but for the Graham siblings, they believe they can get at least some closure when they are enticed to sell the property that has their haunted past buried deep in its walls. But ridding ourselves of our trauma is never that easy, and for them, there’s no running from their past. What Josiah Saw is...

Josiah Graham (Robert Patrick) doesn’t believe in God. To look at him and witness his actions is enough to know this truth, but his words have never been afraid to ensure those sentiments prove undeniable anyway. So he smirks when his youngest son dares to say grace before their latest meal. He starts telling a fantastical story about a dancing leprechaun that he saw outside his window that morning. Tommy (Scott Haze) laughs—both because it’s a humorous anecdote told in humorous fashion and because he’s a bit simple insofar as judging when someone is pulling his leg as a means to cut deeply with malice. His smile fades upon telling his father leprechauns aren’t real because Josiah’s face has turned to a scowl. “Neither is God,” he says.

Thomas (Scott Haze) isn’t quite right. Perhaps it stems back to the time when, as a child, he found his mother hanging from a tree out back; perhaps it was something else. He gets confused, and forgets things. Faith gets him through. He lives alone now, but for his father Josiah (Robert Patrick), who continues to torment him in spite of everything. Mother’s absence is felt everywhere. Her death cost Josiah his belief in God, or perhaps just his respect for Him, so Thomas is surprised to discover that he has had a vision: the other two members of the family must return home to the roost.

Flying largely under the radar, startup shingle Randomix Productions has shared in exclusivity a clip to Southern Gothic horror movie “What Josiah Saw,” one of the titles with the highest-profile star casts at Fantasia: Robert Patrick (“The Terminator”), Nick Stahl (“Sin City”), Scott Haze (“Child of God”) and Kelli Garner (“Lars and the Real Girl”).
“What Josiah Saw” also marks the third feature from Vincent Grashaw, whose intimate study of adolescent ordeal, “And Then I Go,” was picked up for U.S. distribution by The Orchard.
On “What Josiah Saw,” CAA represents North America sales rights.
Structured into chapters – the first is set at Graham Farm on Willow Road, the second follows dissolute Eli, dispatched to a Romani encampment to steal its Nazi gold – the film turns on the estranged Graham family and a past that won’t go away.

If you were hoping to watch Cuban actress Ana de Armas take on the mantle of Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde,” we hate to be the bearer of bad news. The Netflix biopic, based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same name, will not be released this year.
The news, originally reported in Variety, now says that the Dominik-directed and scripted biopic will be released sometime in 2022.
Rumblings about the movie’s released date being moved have been louder of late, in spite of the movie being briefly seen in a promotional video from Netflix this year, wherein the streamer touted releasing a new movie every week in 2021. Back in June, Cannes general delegate Thierry Frémaux said that Netflix had turned down an out of competition slot for the feature. Frémaux said about the film, “Andrew Dominik’s film [‘Blonde’] could have been ready — it’s beautiful, I saw it.

Written by Robert Alan Dilts, What Josiah Saw tells the story of a family with buried secrets who reunite at a farmhouse after two decades to pay for their past sins. Specific plot details are being kept under wraps.
“I felt if I was ever going to do a film which scared people, it would need to be one grounded in a reality that was relatable,” Grashaw said. “It was one of the most unique and terrifying scripts I’d ever come across, and I can’t wait to share this one with an audience.”

NBC has cut a trio of freshman series.

NBC has canceled freshman series “Abby’s,” “The Village,” and “The Enemy Within,” TheWrap has learned.
The trio of shows (two dramas and a comedy) all debuted at midseason and had been the only programs still sitting in limbo at the network, which made most renewal and cancellation decisions ahead of its upfront presentation to advertisers earlier this month — and canceled “A.P. Bio” last week.
Executive produced by Josh Malmuth and Mike Schur, the sitcom “Abby’s” centers on the titular unlicensed bar that Abby (Natalie Morales) runs in her backyard, which “is the perfect gathering place for locals to find camaraderie and sanctuary.”
“Abby’s” is averaging a 0.6 rating in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic and 2.4 million total viewers, according to the “most current” data from Nielsen, which includes a week’s worth of delayed viewing where available.

NBC has made a decision on its new midseason series, comedy Abby’s and dramas The Village and The Enemy Within. All three have been canceled, joining sophomore midseason comedy, A.P. Bio, which was axed last Friday.
NBC left the future of Abby’s, A.P. Bio, The Enemy Within and The Village undecided heading into its upfront presentation earlier this month.
“The next season’s schedule is fluid, we want to give those shows a chance to fulfill their run and we’ll take another look at them then,” NBC Co-Chairmen George Cheeks said on NBC’s May 12 upfronts call. “Remember we program 52 weeks a year so there are a lot of slots.”
The decision is not surprising as neither series has been a critical or commercial breakout. All are from Universal TV; The Village and The Enemy Within just wrapped their runs; Abby’s has a couple of more episodes.

“Has [insert name of broadcast TV show currently in limbo here] been canceled or renewed?” That’s the question on many viewers’ minds now that upfronts season is over.
While Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS and The CW have all announced their 2019-20 programming schedules, some of those slates don’t reveal everything, meaning the statuses of just under half a dozen broadcast TV shows are still up in the air.
And look, we can accept the fact that not every series will be saved like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” famously was last season — and not every show should be. But come on, networks — minus ABC, Fox and The CW, who have already axed or renewed everything on their lists — viewers need to hear one way or another whether their favorite programs will be returning this fall, especially for ones that have a crazy-devoted fanbase.
Below are the five shows we’re still awaiting decisions on.

Marilyn Monroe has now been portrayed onscreen in practically as many titles as she herself starred in. Adding to the selection is BBC Studios with a forthcoming series about the events leading up to the iconic actress's death at 36 from a barbiturate overdose in 1962. Tentatively titled The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe, the limited series will be partly informed by Keith Badman's 2010 biography The Final Years of Marilyn Monroe.
Written by Dan Sefton, who previously created UK medical dramas Trust Me and The Good Karma Hospital, the series will look at Monroe's career aspirations and frustration over being typecast, as well as her highly publicized romantic relationships and rumored affairs with John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy.

“The Enemy Within” is a generic FBI show with a generic title (although not more generic than Dick Wolf’s “FBI” on CBS) that had the good sense to cast Jennifer Carpenter as a helpful traitor. In the new series from Ken Woodruff, Carpenter plays Erica Shepherd, a former CIA operative who has spent the last three years in a Supermax prison after she betrays four other CIA agents who are killed. FBI Agent Will Keaton (Morris Chestnut) needs her help in capturing a terrorist mastermind who appears to be bent on escalating attacks.
Operating on the idea that there are currently 100,000 foreign spies in the U.S. today, the series capitalizes on the xenophobia and paranoia in today’s political climate as its central task force hunts down the foes that walk among us.
After Carpenter earned critical acclaim for the “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” and eight years on “Dexter,...

NBC has firmed up its schedule for the rest of the broadcast season, setting late winter and spring premiere dates. The slate includes two new series, drama The Enemy Within and The Village, and two returning sophomores that debuted last midseason, comedy A.P. Bio and comedic drama Good Girls. Additionally, NBC has set premiere dates for reality series The Voice and World Of Dance.
Yet to get slotted and likely heading to late spring/summer are new comedy Abby’s and drama InBetween.
While flying largely under the radar, caper Good Girls, starring Christina Hendricks, Retta and Mae Whitman, quickly developed a following and has gotten exposure internationally via its deal with Netflix. As NBC announced in May, summer reality series World of Dance, featuring judge and Ep Jennifer Lopez, will move in-season with its third season, paired with Good Girls on Sunday. The new female-skewing Sunday lineup will launch...
