Forget Batman, forget the X-Men. The greatest rogues gallery in comics history belongs to Spider-Man. So great are his baddies that Sony continues to spend millions of dollars to launch a cinematic universe around them. And while Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Venom continue to get most of the attention, even B-level guys like the Spot have been elevated to big bads.
But let’s be honest, even Spider-Man comics have a few duds when it comes to bad guys. Even if we took out the horrendous mess that was the Clone Saga (and we aren’t going to take it out), Spider-Man would still have too many losers and redundant villains to count. So, here are the absolute worst of the worst in Spider-Man’s villain roster, characters so dull that they aren’t good for much besides getting killed in a crossover event.

Legendary Comics is taking on Dracula in a new graphic novel due out this October! What has me really excited is that the it will feature the likeness of Bela Lugosi, in what appears to be a more faithful retelling of the original novel than we saw in the 1931 film. The graphic novel is now available for pre-order and we have a look at the official cover art below:

Legendary Comics will graphically interpret iconic vampire novel in "Bram Stoker's Dracula Starring Bela Lugosi."
Cinema's premiere Count Dracula will be donning his opera cape again. Bela Lugosi had a love-hate relationship with the bloodsucking role that made him an icon. He occasionally felt straitjacketed by the horrific typecasting, but he loved the cape so much he wore it in several films including Plan 9 from Outer Space, and was buried in it. A new adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula will once again drape his form with the elegant attire. Legendary Comics will publish the original graphic novel Bram Stoker's Dracula Starring Bela Lugosi, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The novel, which promises to faithfully adapt Bram Stoker’s supernatural classic, will feature art from El Garing and art direction from publisher Kerry Gammill. The title character will be inked to star Lugosi. Bram Stoker's Dracula...

I remember reading recently that DC Comics top brass were a little miffed that their more recent stuff is still being outsold by their older stuff. Like classic coke beating new coke, the people at the top always seem to be the last to grasp what makes their ‘product’ both accessible and in demand. The reason the old stuff sells better, for both DC and Marvel, is that back in the day the publishers knew their audience, knew the level at which they were pitching their books. As that audience aged, so did the books tone and content, though still with a healthy taste for nostalgia in there too. Which, don’t worry I am going somewhere with this, will bring me into the reason books like this one need to exist. Having read books since the late 70′s, my...

Marvel's classic Star Wars series from the '70s is returning for one more issue. It'll feature the return of Jaxxon and Valance the Hunter!
The Legends canon is creeping back into the Star Wars universe in the form of a new one-shot comic from Marvel which resurrects the publisher's classic Star Wars series. Star Wars #108, which is written by Matthew Rosenberg (X-Men) and drawn by a lineup of artists, with a cover from the legendary Walt Simonson, reintroduces characters who first appeared in the late '70s and early '80s. Yes, that means Jaxxon, the green rabbit dude who hung out with Han Solo in a series of Suicide Squad-like adventures, as well as Valance the Hunter, Amaiza Foxtrain, and Domina Tagge.
"It's hard to explain now what the original series meant to me as a kid. We didn't have all these amazing video games,...

Even though many enduring elements that we now associate with Superman were products of the Silver Age or the 1940’s radio drama, it’s important that we never forget the contributions that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster made to comic books – and pop culture as a whole – when they created the Man of Steel for Action Comics #1 back in 1938. After all, that served as the very blueprint for the superhero genre as we know it today.
With that, one could say that the character’s 80th anniversary being celebrated by the release of the one-thousandth issue of Action is a bit too poetic. And appropriately enough, DC is complementing the periodical release of said issue with a commemorative hardcover titled Action Comics #1000: 80 Years of Superman. Suffice it to say, this is shaping up to be a must-own for any fan of Big Blue.
Understandably, many of you reading this...

A year has passed, and another Texas Frightmare Weekend has come and gone! Last year Tfw expanded dramatically with a much larger location to become the Southwest's premier horror con. This year they proved that isn't going to change anytime soon.
This con is so hot that guests have begun just showing up without an invite. Veteran character actor Glenn Morshower ("Millennium", The Crazies 2010) popped up on Friday and was set up in the lobby until Saturday, when a table was located for him in the main room. He was swamped all weekend so it's a good thing he came!
The focus of the con (which ran May 3rd-5th) was originally "The Walking Dead," but with a few cancellations (almost all replaced with other guests, some from "Twd"), the star of the Weekend became Danny "Machete" Trejo, who was mobbed every time he was at his table. The presence...

Props to our pals at Bloody Disgusting for this sweet find: during the shooting of the Universal monster classic Creature from the Black Lagoon in 1953, Life Magazine sent a photographer to snap a series of promotional images featuring the Gill Man in various threatening poses, including the iconic image of the Creature and his lovely co-star Julia Adams. Color-corrected by Kerry Gammill, these incredible photos reveal the details of the monster costume in action (most likely, it's Ben Chapman in the suit here, whereas Ricou Browning wore it for the underwater scenes). You can see the complete set of large images at Gammill's site Gammillustrations (also the home of Monster Kid magazine), along with a link to the unaltered originals.

On a personal level I make no bones about it... The Creature from the Black Lagoon is one of my all time favorite movie monsters, and to this very day it holds up as one of the best monster suits ever created. Get ready to take a full color look at him in all his gilled glory!
Kerry Gammill of Gammillustrations recently color corrected copies of images that were taken for Life Magazine from the 1953 set of the film. Unfortunately they never made it into the magazine itself, but here they are in all of their full color glory. Big thanks to Bd for making us aware of these, and even bigger thanks to Kerry for taking the time to restore these little seen pieces of classic monster glory.
There's been a lot of talk of a possible Creature from the Black Lagoon remake, but nothing has ever come to fruition.

Here at Dread Central we're big fans of Bela Lugosi's Tales from the Grave (read our review of Issue #1 here) so we're very happy to remind everyone that Issue #2 arrives in comic stores everywhere next Wednesday, May 2nd!
Monsterverse premiered the second issue of its critically acclaimed Bela Lugosi's Tales from the Grave (with cover by the Academy Award winning Rick Baker) at the Monsterpalooza horror event, which was held at the Burbank Airport Marriott Hotel the weekend of April 13th-15th, where everyone agreed the new issue was a spectacular addition to the Monsterverse line of books.
Synopsis:
Bela Lugosi'S Tales From The Grave #2 is a double-sized horror comic book that offers 52 "gore-geous" pages of freaky art and disturbing text and can be found at finer comic shops on Wednesday, May 2nd, for a mere $4.99. That's double the horror of other sorta-kinda-maybe scary comics.

We got word today that a pretty interesting addition has been made to the "Monsterverse Horror Comics Ate My Brain" panel being held at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 22nd: Werewolf screenwriter Michael Tabb.
Werewolf, you may recall, is the new stand-alone film from Universal that was originally slated to be a sequel to its less than warmly received The Wolfman from 2010. Maybe we'll finally get some clarification as to the exact nature of the upcoming film to be directed by Louis Morneau (reboot, redux, sequel, or what) during the panel.
As for his Monsterverse connection, Tabb will be writing a sinister nod to "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" for an upcoming issue of Monsterverse's acclaimed Bela Lugosi's Tales from the Grave horror anthology comic book series.
Prior to the addition of Michael Tabb, here are the Monsterverse panel details:

Back in the days when I was a young, fledgling horror fan, magazines and comics about my beloved genre were not nearly as readily available as they are today. At a time when Forry Ackerman’s Famous Monsters of Filmland ruled the roost and Fangoria was just a glimmer in the eye of some ad executive, we “Monster Kids” got our genre updates the old fashioned (and highly unreliable) way - via word of mouth.
As the years have clicked by and with the introduction of the Internet, being a fan has gotten a whole lot easier, still many of us look back on those early days of horror fandom with more than a little bit of nostalgia.
Luckily, those who have been missing the days of their youth, can rejoice with the introduction of Monsterverse, an imprint of genre-related titles such as Bela Lugosi’s Tales From The Grave...

A Classic Monsters and Bela Lugosi buff, FX legend Rick Baker (who won an Oscar for turning Martin Landau into Lugosi for Ed Wood) was the perfect person to dream up this cover image of a craggy-faced, soul-stealing sailor for the Bela Lugosi’s Tales From The Grave #2.
The La Times posted the cover for Bela Lugosi’s Tales From The Grave #2, which hits stores in July and was unveiled at WonderCon over the weekend by the comic’s publisher, Monsterverse. Baker created the eye-catching, spooky seafarer with ZBrush, and then Kerry Gammill, the editor and publisher of Monsterverse, came up with the ship and stormy sea in the background and also handled some color tweaking and the logo work.

The La Times posted the cover for Bela Lugosi's Tales From The Grave #2 that was unveiled this weekend at WonderCon and will hit store shelves in July. The eighth annual Rondo Hatton Awards have come to pass, and we have all the results for you, including one winner who we're kind of shocked about ... us!
That's right, kids, your love has carried us over once again, and we're both proud and humbled to announce that Dread Central has won the Rondo Award for "Best Website". Honestly? We were honored just to have been nominated. Being up against twenty-nine other quality sites, we never thought we'd win. You guys have no idea how much this means to us as we've always considered the Rondos to be reserved only for the very best in our genre. To be revered as one of "those" for even just a fleeting moment is something we consider to be prestigious in the highest regard.
But make no mistake ... even though technically we are the actual recipients of it, this award belongs very much...
That's right, kids, your love has carried us over once again, and we're both proud and humbled to announce that Dread Central has won the Rondo Award for "Best Website". Honestly? We were honored just to have been nominated. Being up against twenty-nine other quality sites, we never thought we'd win. Let’s pretend for a moment that you, an FM reader, are a fan of classic movie monsters. You know, stuff like Dracula, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Wolfman, Frankenstein’s Monster, etc.
Got it? Ok, good. Just stay with me here.
Now let’s also pretend that you’re a fan of horror films like those that featured, I don’t know, the monsters I mentioned above.
Wow, you’re really good at this game!
Now that you’re all good and hyped up, prepare yourself for an additional dose of excitement if you also happen to be a fan of comic books. Sometime in September, Monsterverse will be releasing a comic anthology entitled Tales from the Grave. Bela Lugosi (do I really need to tell you who he is? I mean, seriously) will be taking on hosting duties for the horror romp.

We here at Famous Monsters love the Rondos, and who wouldn’t?
Begun in 2002 by David Colton and Kerry Gammill over at the scare-tastic Classic Horror Film Board, the Rondo Awards are dedicated to honoring achievements in classic horror, recognizing everything from “Best Movie,” to ”Best DVD Commentary” to “Best Horror Host.” Lucky winners receive a beautifully sculpted bust in the likeness of famed horror star Rando Hatton (The Pearl of Death, House of Horrors), for whom the award is named. And now, every year, the cool ghouls of the internet come together to celebrate the best and brightest in the world of classic horror, science fiction and cult films.
The best part is that anyone can vote. Your voice matters! As a fan of all that is classic horror (and surely that is you, fair reader, for who else would frequent the abode of the Ackermonster?), it is your...

When was the last time Halloween came five times in one month? It’s been happening this October thanks to Bob Burns, monster kid fandom’s legendary “gift that keeps on giving”—and it has only taken him 42 years to get it all together! At the Bob Burns’ Hollywood Halloween website, a two-hour-plus documentary telling the story of Bob and Kathy Burns’ live Halloween shows has been serialized; the first of the five parts became available on October 5, and the rest are being spaced throughout the month.
For newbies, a bit of backstory: In 1967, Bob and wife Kathy, ensconced in their new Burbank home, decided to do a little more for trick-or-treaters than drop candy in their bags. When kids knocked on the door, it opened to reveal a “mad lab” complete with Frankenstein’s Monster (a dummy strapped to a diagonal operating table) and crackling lab equipment. For the next several years,...

“Bromance.” Love the term or hate it, it’s become a part of the nation’s vernacular — and apparently, it’s become a part of the comics world, too. The follow-up to last year’s “Marvel Romance” collection, this August’s “Marvel Bromance” will offer up some of the greatest “bromantic” moments from the publisher’s long history, featuring Spider-Man, Wolverine, Deadpool and other popular characters engaging in good, old-fashioned male bonding… superhero-style.
Whether it’s Tony Stark and Jim Rhodes, Cable and Deadpool or Spidey and the Human Torch, guys-only adventures have yielded some funny — and occasionally endearing — moments in Marvel history. Given MTV’s history with covering great moments in “Bromance” history, Marvel wanted to give Splash Page readers the first look at the never-before-seen Jorge Molina cover to “Marvel Bromance.”
