At the Fox Comic-Con panel in Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center on Saturday night fans were treated to a surprise appearance from the cast of "X-Men: Days of Future Past." Stars Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Halle Berry, Peter Dinklage and director Bryan Singer were all spotted before the panel started by Associated Press reporter Ryan Pearson.

Later, the entire cast came out to a standing ovation from the Hall H crowd:
The cast was in good spirits, with Fassbender wearing a mask from the upcoming horror film "You're Next" which he apparently found backstage. McKellen, meanwhile, joked that it was lovely to be in California "now that you got rid of Proposition 8."
"I'm looking for a husband," McKellen said to Fassbender. "Nice to meet you, Michael.

The Godfather of Sound on Sight, Ricky D., and I were recently conversing through email when he broached the topic of me writing an article about the ten best film related podcasts. For those who don’t know me very well I am a big fan of the medium of podcasting when it comes to film. I love good discussion about the world of film, as well as interesting insight about the art form that I am so endeared with. A couple of years ago I began a trek, on my blog, through every single film related podcast I could find. The goal was to experience as much film discussion as I could and to separate the wheat from the chaff. The trek is still ongoing, but at this point I feel like I have a decent handle on what the very best film related podcasts are out of the ones I have listened to.

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly movie news column that brings you only the most excellent links, news items, art and moving images from around the web. It’s also glad to be back in the saddle now that guest author week is over. First up tonight, a big round of applause for Ryan Gallagher of The Criterion Cast for stepping in last week and filling in while I gorged myself on the bloody mess known as Fantastic Fest. It made the festival experience that much more enjoyable to know that fans of this column were being treated to some excellent writing. Maybe we’ll convince him to come back again in the future. We begin our news night with one of over 30 new images from Argo, the Ben Affleck directed drama that’s getting all sorts of buzz. Even our own Rob Hunter is said to have liked it a lot… 1. Danny Strong...

What is Movie News After Dark? After a few days of not posting, who even knows anymore. As many of you have seen, this week began Fantastic Fest. And as I’ve done every year without learning any important lessons or growing as a person, I made the mistake of thinking I could take on the first few days of Fantastic Fest and publish a few entries into the Movie News After Dark series. Several alcoholic beverages, seven films and a half-bottle of ibuprofen later and I’m once again in a position to learn a powerful lesson about overcommitment (I won’t). Fear not though, good friends and beloved readers, as Movie News After Dark has a hero. He just doesn’t start until Monday. That’s right, Monday begins guest author week on Mnad. In the past, I’ve invited the other staffers here at Film School Rejects to rotate in and deliver excellent editions...

Now that you've heard the news about Top Chef Canada's second season, you're probably wondering the same thing we are -- just who are these chefs?
The contestants come from across Canada, representing almost every food background imaginable. Well, except for the East Coast, which will be sorely missed after Todd Perrin's inventiveness last year. Here's what the Huffington Post Canada found out about these 16 chefs who will be competing on Food Network Canada starting March 12.
Chef: Joel Aubie, 27, of Tofino, BC (originally from Bathurst, Nb)
Aubie currently works as the head chef at Shelter restaurant in Tofino, having worked his way up since its opening in 2007. As a restaurant on the edge of the coast's famous beach, he focuses on seafood, with an emphasis on local and organic ingredients. He might just find it a challenge cooking from Loblaws' shelves during the competition.

The New Yorker's Richard Brody sets up Aki Kaurismäki's Le Havre, "set in the port city in the present day, where Marcel Marx (André Wilms) — a former writer, now an itinerant shoe-shine man — provides refuge for Idrissa Saleh (Blondin Miguel), a boy from Gabon who arrived clandestinely in a ship container and is being hotly pursued by the authorities. The probings of the black-clad police inspector Henri Monet (Jean-Pierre Darroussin) recall the sinister ways of the Vichy regime, as the hunted boy evokes Jewish wartime refugees, and the solidarity of the shopkeepers and laborers who protect him reflects a bygone but heartwarming class unity (as well as the comforting myth of a nation of resisters)."
"What is truly remarkable about Le Havre," finds Michael Sicinski, dispatching from Toronto to Cargo, "is Kaurismäki's clear, unfussy depiction of a bedrock of humanist decency within French society, wherein people don't think twice about helping the immigrant,...

This is the podcast dedicated to The Criterion Collection. Ryan Gallagher, James McCormick & Travis George discuss Criterion Collection news & rumors and new releases. They also discuss Criterion #425 Hiroshi Teshigahara’s 1984 film, Antonio Gaudi.
Catalan architect Antonio Gaudí (1852–1926) designed some of the world’s most astonishing buildings, interiors, and parks; Japanese director Hiroshi Teshigahara constructed some of the most aesthetically audacious films ever made. Here their artistry melds in a unique, enthralling cinematic experience. Less a documentary than a visual poem, Teshigahara’s Antonio Gaudí takes viewers on a tour of Gaudí’s truly spectacular architecture, including his massive, still-unfinished masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona. With camera work as bold and sensual as the curves of his subject’s organic structures, Teshigahara immortalizes Gaudí on film.

Why Watch? Because the combination of animation, experiment, and Welles is a palpable one. In 1977, experimental filmmaker Larry Jordan used work from 19th century French artist Gustave Doré and the thunderous tones of Orson Welles to bring Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s most famous epic poem to life. It’s a potent story of a sea captain who kills an albatross while on the ocean and pays a hefty penalty. But chances are that you already knew that, having had to memorize it for freshman English class in high school. The version here, which is more than a bit different from Raúl daSilva’s 1975 take, is surreal at times but also direct. The engravings are wonderful, but there’s no denying that Welles is the star. What does it cost? Just 40 minutes of your time. Check out The Rime of the Ancient Mariner for yourself: The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner (1977) Trust us. You...

Though she went on to create a string of brilliant films, Jane Campion will always be remembered for her stunning debut feature, Sweetie, which focuses on the hazardous relationship between the buttoned-down, superstitious Kay and her rampaging, devil-may-care sister, Sweetie—and on their family’s profoundly rotten roots. A feast of colorful photography and captivating, idiosyncratic characters, the tough and tender Sweetie heralded the emergence of this gifted director, as well as a renaissance of Australian cinema, which would take the film world by storm in the nineties.

So if you were following my test last week to release the Disc 2 before the main episode, you’ll notice that this week I quickly reverted to our old way of doing things. I just found that putting out a Disc 2 before the Disc 1 caused a minor tear in the space time continuum, and I can’t have that on my conscience again. This week we continue our preview of this week’s new DVD and Blu-ray releases, including things like Tron, Taxi Driver, and Batman Beyond The Return Of The Joker, as well as a look at what else has been on our screens.

In a career-defining performance, Alain Delon plays a contract killer with samurai instincts. This week, on a very special episode of Reject Radio, we celebrate April Fool’s Day by talking seriously about great movies, director’s cuts and movies about people cutting other people up. Our very own Criterion Files writer Adam Charles teams up with Criterion Cast co-host Ryan Gallagher to convince me to become a member of the Criterion Cult. Junkfood Cinema specialist Brian Salisbury gets together with Gordon and the Whale editor (and VHS enthusiast) Brian Kelley as we all rejoice in the 25th anniversary of the ridiculous teen slasher flick April Fool’s Day and bathe in the acid bath of a few others. Plus, Jordan Hoffman of Ugo and Jeremy Smith from Aint it Cool go mano y mano in our Movie News Pop Quiz in an epic battle to save the world from impending destruction (and to talk about director’s cuts, when they work, and when they don’t). CriterionCast – Episode 74.5 – Disc 2 – Off The Shelf And On The Screen With Ryan, James, And Travis
With this episode, I’m trying out a new method of releasing our Disc 2 episodes. To coincide with “new release Tuesdays,” we’ll be including a new segment in our Disc 2′s: Off The Shelf. This will be a rundown of the week’s new releases on DVD and Blu-ray. In it we’ll highlight those releases that we find particularly interesting, pointing out those that you should avoid, and those that demand your hard earned dollars.
I’m also trying out something new in that I’m releasing the Disc 2 before I’m releasing our main discussion on Le Samourai. I still haven’t decided on whether this is how we’ll do this going forward, but I wanted to try it out. My thinking is that the Disc 2 will coincide with the new releases of the week, and the main episode will go up a few days later,...

Here's something that popped up on Twitter courtesy The Criterion Cast's Ryan Gallagher: a gallery of clever and very well-designed concert posters inspired by '80s Saturday morning cartoons, created by artist Steve Thomas. Here's the poster for Voltron's legendary gig at the Arus Colosseum:
Their encore was sick that night; Voltron turned into a giant guitar and then played himself. Epic. Be sure to check out Steve's full gallery, where you can also find links to where you can purchase prints.
