The actors from the current revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Merrily We Roll Along” have skyrocketed in Gold Derby’s combined odds for the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. The prediction center displays commanding leads for Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe to win their respective categories. This is an understandable result considering this revival is the hottest ticket in town and this trio of performers has been ever-present in the media. But how often does a trio of actors from the same production pull off three separate acting victories at the Tony Awards?
It’s quite common for a musical to grab two acting trophies, but three awards is much rarer. To date, only 15 musical productions have earned three acting wins. The first time this feat occurred was at the 1956 ceremony, which was ironically the first time the Tony Awards ever announced a slate of nominees (previously...

Stephen Sondheim has almost never been more popular than in the two years since his passing in November 2021. In that time, celebrated revivals of “Company,” “Into the Woods,” and “Sweeney Todd” have come to Broadway, and successful remounting of “Assassins” and “Merrily We Roll Along” have played Off-Broadway, which is a testament to the enduring appeal of his works.
This fall will once again spotlight Sondheim. The tremendously successful Off-Broadway run of “Merrily” starring Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe opens on Broadway on October 10, which will mark the first remounting since its original, unsuccessful run in 1981. In addition, his final musical “Here We Are,” which is based on two Luis Buñuel films—“The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “The Exterminating Angel”—will have its highly-anticipated world premiere Off-Broadway, opening on October 22.

Bobby, bubi, we need to talk about the Tony Awards! This season’s revival of the late Stephen Sondheim’s landmark musical “Company” earned nine nominations, the highest for any musical revival of the year and the fourth largest tally of any show. It earned citations for Best Revival, three for performers Matt Doyle, Patti LuPone, and Jennifer Simard, Best Director for Marianne Elliott, and four others.
Glaringly absent from this well-deserved list, though, is star Katrina Lenk, who plays the musical’s central character Bobbie; Elliott has reimagined the piece with a woman at the fore. If this snub seems egregious, it’s one that productions of “Company” past have had to contend with before.

The 2021-2022 Broadway season has been quite a busy one for actor Brandon J. Dirden. First he appeared opposite Phylicia Rashad in Manhattan Theatre Club’s presentation of Dominique Morisseau‘s play “Skeleton Crew” this past winter. Now he can be seen in Second Stage Theater’s revival of Richard Greenberg‘s 2003 Tony-winning play “Take Me Out.” After having previously appeared in award-winning Broadway productions of “Clybourne Park” (2012), “All the Way” (2014), and “Jitney” (2017), will either of Dirden’s two main stem appearances from this past year make him a first-time Tony nominee?
In “Skeleton Crew,” Dirden played Reggie, the manager of one of the last auto stamping plants in Detroit. The company is on shaky ground and the workers have to make choices about how to move forward if their plant goes under. All the while Reggie is torn between doing right by his work family and the red tape in his office.

In this year’s Tony Awards race for Best Actress in a Musical, there are three classic roles that have been nominated before, but haven’t won: Bobbie in “Company,” Caroline Thibodeaux in “Caroline, or Change,” and Fanny Brice in “Funny Girl.” Can any of them finally prevail this time?
See‘Hangmen’ could finally earn Martin McDonagh a long awaited Tony Award for Best Play
As of this writing Sharon D. Clarke is the front-runner according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users with 9/2 odds. In “Caroline, or Change,” she played Caroline Thibodeaux, a 39-year-old African-American maid and a single mother of four working for a middle-class Jewish family in Louisiana back in 1963. For the original Broadway production back in 2004, Tonya Pinkins was the odds-on favorite to win Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as the title character. Over fifty years after its debut on Broadway in 1970, Stephen Sondheim’s genre-redefining musical “Company” has returned in a reimagined production by Tony Award-winning director Marianne Elliott. The classic musical is a series of vignettes that coalesce around its protagonist Bobby on the occasion of his thirty-fifth birthday, but in this revival the main character is now a female Bobbie. “Company” opened at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Dec. 9.
Tony winner Katrina Lenk steps into the role of Bobbie, previously played on Broadway by the likes of Dean Jones, Larry Kert, Boyd Gaines, and Raúl Esparza. Her Joanne – the character known for singing the sardonic Sondheim showstopper “The Ladies Who Lunch” – is two-time Tony winner Patti LuPone. The ensemble boasts a number of Broadway staples, including Nikki Renée Daniels, Matt Doyle, Tony nominees Christopher Fitzgerald, Christopher Sieber, and Jennifer Simard, plus others. George Furth contributed the original book.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Amazon Studios, The Goldfinch is the film adaptation of Donna Tartt’s globally acclaimed best-selling novel, which won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction.
Directed by BAFTA Award winner John Crowley (“Brooklyn”), the film features a multigenerational cast led by Ansel Elgort (“Baby Driver”) as Theo Decker and Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Barbour.
With a Fall release date, expect an awards season push from Warner Bros.
Theodore “Theo” Decker was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love. Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day…a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch.

Jan Maxwell, a beloved mainstay of New York City theater, died on Feb. 11 at the age of 61. Over the course of her illustrious career, in which she appeared in 13 Broadway and numerous Off-Broadway productions, Maxwell earned five Tony Award nominations for her work in both musicals and plays, comedies and dramas, displaying a near-unparalleled mastery of both genres.
Maxwell first appeared on the Great White Way in the original production of “City of Angels” as an understudy, swing, and replacement. Her first bid at the Tony Awards came over a decade later for her featured role in the musical “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” in 2005, for which she won her first Drama Desk Award. She went on to earn Tony nominations for her performances in the play “Coram Boy” (2007) and in revivals of “Lend Me a Tenor” (2010) and “The Royal Family” (2010), taking home her second Drama Desk for the latter.

Full cast + crew There are a few noteworthy big-budget releases from 2014 hitting store shelves this week, but before we get to those let's focus on an old gem that an entirely new generation should rediscover: The Sure Thing, directed by Rob Reiner. It was his second feature ever, and it came sandwiched right between This is Spinal Tap and Stand By Me. It elevates '80s sex comedy material to some endearing levels, and the whole movie has aged remarkably well. Highly, highly recommended if...

The brashness and move against being controlled by the ratings system pushed the boundaries of what could be included on-screen. Looking back to the eighties though there was a movie that arguably created the blueprint from which these films would work from. That film was Bob Clark’s Porky’s.

Touching upon much of his internationally regarded iconography as well as looking ahead to current and future endeavors, Jones eloquently expresses his observations on acting, art, humanity and life itself. Focusing on the ScreenVision presentation of Alfred Uhry's Driving Miss Daisy starring opposite fellow icon and InDepth InterView participant Dame Angela Lansbury, Jones astutely outlines the themes of the touching Southern drama depicting the unlikely friendship between an uptight society woman and her dedicated chauffer as well as opens up about his own experiences with culture clashes and race in his life. Additionally, Jones juxtaposes his observations of working alongside...

I’m not exactly sure what I’m selling here. At first I thought No Pay, Nudity was a documentary about actors. I thought Laurie Metcalf, Nathan Lane, Ted Levine and others were appearing to talk about the positives and negatives of their profession. Then I thought maybe they were at least playing themselves in the movie. After watching the Kickstarter campaign video I don’t know what the finished result will be. It has a scrip by Ethan Sandler (Whitney… wait, don’t go away yet), so it’s fictional. And in addition to the actors already mentioned, the huge ensemble on board includes Lewis Black, Brent Spiner, Jessica Hecht, Austin Pendleton, Boyd Gaines, Mark Blum, Peter Jacobsen and many more whose face you’d recognize before their name. It’s basically a movie full of “that guy” non-stars. But not Curtis Armstrong, apparently, though he does show up in the campaign video. I...

New York — The slow, lingering demise of "Smash" has felt more like a punch to the gut to the folks on Broadway.
The TV series about the making of a big stage musical came with a flurry of attention and some big names: Steven Spielberg, Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston. It was going to be a valentine to Broadway.
Sometimes, though, love letters get sent back.
After a first season with a healthy-sized audience averaging 7.7 million viewers, it returned this year to such dismal ratings it was banished to Saturday night. It won't be back for a third season.
But while TV was finally focusing on Broadway, plenty of stage veterans jumped to TV during the two-year run of "Smash." Some flamed out, some are holding on and some still hope:
_ Three-time Tony winner Sutton Foster's show about ballerinas, "Bunheads," has been picked up for a second season on ABC Family.

The theater season has just begun, but it’s already claimed its first Broadway casualty. Producers scuttled plans for a musical version of the Daphne du Maurier novel Rebecca, which was to open this fall, but failed to secure all of its $12 million budget amid reports of phantom investors, sabotage, and fateful producer inexperience. Not all of the drama was backstage, however, with several high-profile productions making their debuts with (mostly) mixed critical response:

A 130-year-old play might seem creaky when considering the men are in top hats, the women are in long dresses, and there is an overall stiffer manner.
But Henrik Ibsen's "An Enemy of the People," at the Manhattan Theatre Club's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, holds up just fine in director Doug Hughes' capable hands.
If only it weren't so timely.
The play asks important questions about free speech, environmental disasters and the rich expecting the poor to suffer an undue tax burden. Considering recent events such as the Bp disaster, Wall Street greed and the one percent, then none of it seems all that old.
In fact it's pretty timeless.
And scary. Unless those involved are armed, little is scarier than a mob. When people lose critical thinking abilities and just start chanting, when they repeat without thinking and close in on someone, anything can happen. And it is rarely good.

A new Broadway season is about to begin and, with it, new life has been brought to my posts. After over 900 posts, 50 comments, over 325 Tony nominees and over 75 winners in the two-and-a-half years I blogged independently about the Tony Awards, I am proud to be joining the team at ScottFeinberg.com.
Without any further ado, I would like to begin with a look ahead at the Broadway shows that will be coming up this year. I have made this list as comprehensive as I could given what information is available but, as is often the case, there is much more data available right now about the fall season (September through the winter holidays) than the spring season (Christmas through the Tony Awards in June) on Broadway. I will update this post with more details as information becomes available.

Previously announced committee members Boyd Gaines (who will star in 'An Enemy of the People') and director Pam MacKinnon ('Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?') will also not serve on the board. No replacements have been named at this time." Up until now, BAFTA has only awarded a best writer award at its television craft awards ceremony, meaning drama writers have been pitted against comedy creators. Last year, the guild began discussions with BAFTA to address this issue. Today, the union has...

The talking heads on cable only wish they wielded the power newspaper columnists of old had. They were titans who formed public opinion and whispered in presidents' ears.
Sure, vestiges remain, a powerful writer, here and there, and certainly some cable commentators and radio personalities fire up crowds. But Joseph Alsop (1910-1989) was hugely influential as a widely syndicated columnist, with an Ivy League education and family ties to the Roosevelts. As John Lithgow portrays him in "The Columnist" presented by the Manhattan Theatre Club at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, he is a man convinced he is at the center of the universe.
In many ways he is. But that universe was bound to implode.
Lithgow, as always, is excellent. There is a very good reason he has earned two Tony Awards, five Emmy Awards and two Oscar nods. He plays Alsop as arch, prissy, closeted and intellectual. He's not very easy to like,...

The race for Best Musical Actor pits two-time Tony champ Matthew Broderick ("Nice Work If You Can Get It") against four-time nominee Raul Esparza ("Leap of Faith"). Broderick won this race in 1995 for the first rialto revival of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" and contended in 2001 for "The Producers," losing to his co-star Nathan Lane. Broderick also won the featured actor prize for the play "Brighton Beach Memoirs" in 1983. Esparza is one of only two Broadway performers to have contended in all four acting races. Unlike the other, Boyd Gaines, who has won three of his four bids, Esparza has yet to take home a Tony. In 2004, he lost Featured Musical Actor for "Taboo" to Michael Cerveris ("Assassins"); in 2007 he lost Musical Actor for "Company" to David Hyde-Pierce ("Curtains"); in 2008, he lost Featured Play Actor for "The Homecoming" t...
