Ah, Boba Fett. The bounty hunter with a Mandalorian helmet first appeared in "The Star Wars Holiday Special" in an animated sequence that was slightly less bats**t bizarre than the rest of that monstrosity (which I do admit to having a soft spot for). He would subsequently return in "Star Wars: Episode V -- The Empire Strikes Back," working for Darth Vader (David Prowse/James Earl Jones) and taking the body of Han Solo (Harrison Ford), frozen in carbonite, to Jabba the Hutt. His role was very small, but that character design was just too good for him to fade into the background. Fans went a little wild over him. Eventually, Boba even got a dad and a backstory in the prequel trilogy, in addition to his very own show on Disney+, "The Book of Boba Fett," starring Temuera Morrison.

A fun piece of trivia: the "Star Wars" character Boba Fett, prior to his inclusion in "The Star Wars Holiday Special" -- which didn't air until November 17, 1978 -- made a live appearance in a parade in the San Anselmo County Fair the previous September. The parade may have been before the character had been given a name, and "Star Wars" fans were tantalized to see a new, mysterious figure walking down the street next to Darth Vader. It was the first appearance of Boba Fett.
The stoic, faceless, and largely mute character, because of his cool helmet, became a fan favorite over the years, and Boba Fett's importance has grown since 1978 to the point where he got his own TV series. Boba Fett has been played by many actors over the years. In "Empire" and in "Return of the Jedi," Jeremy Bulloch wore the suit, while Jason Wingreen played his voice.

Though he now insists he's #NotABountyHunter, Boba Fett has been knocking about the galaxy — and, yes, bounty hunting — since 1978 when he first appeared in a different color scheme and in animated form in the notorious "Star Wars Holiday Special" (now in 4K). As of today, Fett is officially the star of his own Disney+ series, "The Book of Boba Fett," the first episode of which is now available to stream.
It's been a long road to this series. Don Francks provided the voice of Boba Fett in the "Holiday Special," where Darth Vader (James Earl Jones) secretly employed his services and called him "the best bounty hunter...

Boba Fett’s green, T-visored helmet is a menacing visage that’s nearly evocative of Star Wars as Darth Vader’s; one first embodied on film by actor Jeremy Bulloch, who, sadly, passed away on December 17 at the age of 75. However, the legacy that Bulloch leaves behind has proven far greater than a character with minimal screentime and dubbed lines seemingly had any right to possess. It’s a legacy to which hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian owes a great deal of thanks.
Bulloch, born in Leicestershire, England on February 16, 1945, wasted little time getting himself onscreen with uncredited roles—while still an adolescent—in 1958 films Violent Playground and Titanic tragedy movie A Night to Remember, continuing to work steadily for years in U.K.-aimed films and television shows. He fielded a notable four-episode 1974 run as Hal the Archer on Doctor Who (opposite Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor); his second run on the series,...

This Star Wars: The Mandalorian article contains spoilers.
The Mandalorian’s Star Wars lore elements are firmly cemented in pop culture now, so the mind-blowing impact of one of its earliest teases, the title character’s devastating, disintegration-dealing Amban phase-pulse blaster, might already be forgotten. However, the signature forked firearm of Din Djarin, is now set to reach a new tier of popularity: a Nerf toy.
The Amban rifle’s Nerf treatment was recently revealed by Hasbro, which has put together an impressive foam-flinging toy that measures 50.25 inches (1.27 meters) in length. The blaster, which makes series-accurate sound effects when firing Nerf bolts, stops short of resembling a replica—for obvious safety reasons—with a toy-distinguishing grey barrel that contrasts with bright-red parts on the scope, barrel, and trigger. Priced at a hefty $119.99, the rifle won’t be available until October 2021, but it will arrive in time for Christmas (Life Day) next year,...

“Before I said I was going to do Finian’s Rainbow I should have read the book.”Finian’s Rainbow (1968)
Commentator: Francis Ford Coppola (director)
1. Regarding the film’s opening frame featuring the word “overture” onscreen, he says it’s because this was what was referred to as a roadshow production. “They were like a night at the theater. You were given a program, it was an event, and as you came to your seat there was an overture playing.” It’s a long absent format, but Quentin Tarantino recently revived it for some screenings of The Hateful Eight.
2. He says a benefit of 70mm productions was that “the soundtrack would be in six-track magnetic stereophonic sound and was very high quality.”
3. The Warner Bros/Seven Arts logo reminds him of his time spent at the latter company working as a staff writer when they bought WB. “It was quite a coincidence related to my directing this...

As a musical it’s excellent — fine tunes and lyrics, great singing and dancing by the ever-youthful Fred Astaire, the glorious songbird Petula Clark, and the impishly weird Tommy Steele cast appropriately as a grimacing Leprechaun. The update of what was a politically acute Broadway hit in 1947 is awkward but the show is a melodious pleasure — great color, fine voices and peppy direction by Francis Ford Coppola on his first big studio feature.

If you want to see what the quintessential Tim Burton movie looks like, you're in luck because his latest now has a trailer and it's gloriously Burton-esque. It's as if Ransom Riggs wrote the Ya fantasy book Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children just so it'd be made into a movie by the man behind the movies Edward Scissorhands and Big Fish and the drawings of strange children in his own book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories. It's also sort of what a Tim Burton-directed X-Men movie might look like. Or at least a New Mutants movie. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children stars Eva Green as a sort of Professor Xavier for orphans with strange powers or qualities. There's an...

As many of you already know, Joss Whedon worked with Marvel Comics writing a run of Astonishing X-Men that brought Colossus back and introduced several other X-Men characters. He’s done a good amount of work for the company in past, and now he’s coming back to write another comic for them to celebrate Captain America’s 75th anniversary.
ComicBook.com confirmed with Marvel that Whedon will be re-teaming with John Cassaday, who worked with the writer on reviving Astonishing X-Men. The report gives the following information:
Appearing in Captain America: Sam Wilson #7, the two will tell an all-new story celebrating the legacy and legend of Captain America. The issue will also feature a main story from series creative team Nick Spencer & Daniel Acuna, and another backup by Greg Rucka & Mike Perkins.
This wouldn’t be Cassaday’s first time working with Cap either. He did the art...

Deadpool continues to rack up the dollars, so Deadpool continues to silently change the landscape of 20th Century Fox as Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice enters the final marketing push in the foreground.
First, we were supposed to get two more X-Movies this year, at least according to the previous release schedule we were working off. X-Men: Apocalypse will still drop at the end of May (as Captain America: Civil War wears off from earlier in the month), but October 7, 2016 is no longer the release date for Gambit, starring Channing Tatum. It appears that movie has been pulled from the schedule entirely.

For the last week, Star Wars fans who follow Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) on Twitter have been enjoying a special treat. On February 17, the actor cryptically declared on social media that a big announcement would be coming soon from him. To keep But he didn’t say when. That would normally be the end of things, with fans and journalists periodically checking back to see if the news had dropped. But then Mayhew did something fun…he started posting photos of his original Star Wars script every day and promised to keep it up until the unknown day of the announcement. So far we’re eight days in. No announcement yet, but so far the posted script pages have been fascinating. From dialogue changes to more background information to characters that never saw the light of day, it’s an interesting trip down memory lane. Day One: Starting today I'll post...

Creepy (Kiyoshi Kurosawa)
One has to appreciate Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s winking self-awareness in calling his new feature Creepy. It’s as if the Coen brothers released a film entitled Snarky, or Eli Roth named his next stomach-churner Gory. Kurosawa, who’s still best known for Cure (1997) and Pulse (2001), two rare outstanding examples of the highly variable J-Horror genre, instills a sense of creepiness into virtually anything he does, regardless of subject matter. His latest, which sees him return to the realm of horror after excursions into more arthouse territory, certainly lives up to its name...

Lenny Bruce: Dustin Hoffman in the 1974 Bob Fosse movie. Lenny Bruce movie review: Polemical stand-up comedian merited less timid biopic (Oscar Movie Series) Bob Fosse's 1974 biopic Lenny has two chief assets: the ever relevant free speech issues it raises and the riveting presence of Valerie Perrine. The film itself, however, is only sporadically thought-provoking or emotionally gripping; in fact, Lenny is a major artistic letdown, considering all the talent involved and the fertile material at hand. After all, much more should have come out of a joint effort between director Fosse, fresh off his Academy Award win for Cabaret; playwright-screenwriter Julian Barry, whose stage version of Lenny earned Cliff Gorman a Tony Award; two-time Best Actor Oscar nominee Dustin Hoffman (The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy); and cinematographer Bruce Surtees (Play Misty for Me, Blume in Love). Beating Schrader’s Hardcore to the punch by a matter of months, Robin Spry’s grim and gritty gutter-level drama is driven by a not-dissimilar premise, that of a man searching the seedy urban underbelly for his drug-addicted prostitute daughter. Rather astonishing that it was made for TV – the remarkably bleak opening indicates that no punches are going to be pulled, as we first see Peter Brennan (Don Francks), before the credits have even finished rolling, nodding out in a grimy cafe toilet, the needle still sticking out of his arm. This is followed by howling hospital cold turkey, as a borderline sadistic cop plays Peter a slide show of a drug-addicted girl forced into sex work, before revealing that said girl is Peter’s own daughter. We then get to see said slide show again in harrowing close-up, while Peter wails ever louder. So, once recovered, and with regular...

These days, cinema buffs searching high and low for a lost, early work of a modern filmmaker is almost unheard of , as most everything is readily available on DVD or Blu-ray. However, back in the day, this was far from the case. Way back when, many early efforts from then current directorial masters were extremely hard to find. For example, throughout the 1980s, I can remember looking everywhere for a copy of George A. Romero’s third film Season of the Witch aka Hungry Wives (1972) as well as Martin Scorsese’s debut feature Who’s That Knocking at My Door? (1967) just to name a few. Another movie I always longed to see was a strange, little action film called Fast Company. The reason I use the word strange is because the movie was directed by the enormously talented, Canadian born David Cronenberg. Although he is now known...

I am such a sucker for a Slasher film. Maybe it was the late night viewings on cable that endeared me. Or perhaps the lurid video covers that are tucked deep in the recesses of my brain. But I’m hooked. For life.
