Before "Titanic" and "Avatar" director James Cameron was King of the World, he was an upstart young filmmaker trying to get his first feature off the ground. Created in the wake of the "Star Wars" phenomenon, Cameron and his pal Randall Frakes set out to make an extremely ambitious science-fiction movie titled "Xenogenesis" about a young woman and an artificial man sent on a mission to scour the galaxy for a planet suitable for creating new life. With $20,000 raised from a local dentist, the two set about creating a short 12-minute pitch movie featuring some of Cameron's detailed concept paintings as well...

We’ve got a ton of great titles on the docket for this final week of home media releases in August. Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters is hitting various formats on Tuesday, and if you’re looking for some oddball entertainment, The Banana Splits Movie should undoubtedly do the trick. For all you sci-fi fans out there, the classic V miniseries is finally making its way to Blu, and Scream Factory is also giving both The Leech Woman and Fear in the Night the HD treatment as well.
Vinegar Syndrome is showing some love to Hell Comes to Frogtown this week, and the Warner Archive Collection is bringing home several of their films on DVD, including Wolfen, Of Unknown Origin, The Hand, and Dracula Has Risen From the Grave. Also, one of the more disturbing psychological thrillers I’ve seen in some time, Ladyworld, is being released on DVD on August 27th,...

Arrow Video are well known for their line of cult favourites from horror and science fiction films of the past and here we see them go to the vault and come out with a big pile of stinking cheese in the form of Hell Comes to Frogtown.
Directed by the late Donald G. Jackson and R.J Kizer, Hell Comes to Frogtown follows the character of Sam Hell, played by professional wrestler and part-time actor, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper (They Live), who is taken prisoner by a female government who have taken over the United States after a nuclear war. Sam Hell must rescue a group of fertile women who are being held captive by a mutant tyrant. Oh, and the mutants in question, well…...

An animated superhero movie featuring Marlon Brando? A Bill Murray comedy? Just two of the strange, starry films we may never get to see.
Film history is littered with movies that have wound up on the shelf for some reason, either because of financial difficulties or, in the case of The Day The Clown Died, because its director and star decided it was too embarrassing to be released. We've written about all sorts of shelved or cancelled films before, from Roger Corman's infamous Fantastic Four to the unreleased John Goodman comedy, Spring Break '83.
Every so often, though, we'll hear about curious-sounding projects that generate a bit of news before vanishing again. An animated film featuring the voices of Marlon Brando and Brendan Fraser, perhaps, or a modern comedy about old Greek gods featuring Christopher Walken as Zeus.
Here, then, are five strange, star-laden movies that,...

In 1978, a pair of young, wannabe filmmakers made a 12-minute, 35mm short called Xenogenesis. One of those wannabes was a visionary artist by the name of James Cameron. The other—who Cameron calls “the best kept secret in Hollywood”—was a precocious storyteller by the name of Randall Frakes. Over the following four decades, the two […]

Hell Comes to Frogtown (1987)
Written by: Donald G. Jackson, Randall Frakes
Directed by: Donald G. Jackson
Cast: “Rowdy” Roddy Piper (Sam Hell), Sandahl Bergman (Spangle), William Smith (Captain Devlin), Cec Verrell (Centinella), Kristi Somers (Arabella), Rory Calhoun (Looney Tunes), Cliff Bemis (Leroy).
I don’t really know what to make of the name “Hell Comes to Frogtown”. I think it has served a dual purpose in being clever, and keeping me from seeing this film. The play on words is the clever part. Our hero’s name is Sam Hell, and guess what-he’s headed to Frogtown. Then again, it would be quite logical to assume that this could be a low budget Jim Henson film wannabe, and I guess it is. However, after I watched it, I’ve come to realize that it’s way more subversive than that. The two lead actors...

After its trailer appeared last year, the $130 million fantasy film Empires Of The Deep went all quiet. Ryan wonders what happened...
Almost three years ago, a strange press conference took place in Beijing. On a stage bathed in flashing lights, women with low-body fat danced around on a stage, their dresses billowing. They wore strange, striped rubber appliances on their heads which looked a bit like shower caps. The guest of honour at the press conference was Olga Kurylenko, the actress who'd appeared in the Bond film Quantum Of Solace not long earlier.
The press conference was to promote the impending release of Empires Of The Deep - a $130 million special effects extravaganza which would mark China's triumphant entry into blockbuster filmmaking. Bankrolled by one Jon Jiang, a real estate magnate with very deep pockets, the film was billed as a Grecian fantasy movie under the sea,...

From the director of Firestarter, Class of 1999, Showdown in Little Tokyo, and Commando comes Groupie, a psycho thriller about a psychopathic rock groupie terrorizing a popular rock band on their comeback tour.
Groupie marks the first time Mark L. Lester has stepped behind the camera since 2005's highly rated Syfy original Pterodactyl. Taryn Manning (Hustle & Flow) stars as a mysterious groupie that hooks up with a famous rock band named "The Dark Knights" looking to rise again on their comeback tour. As she insinuates herself more and more into their lives and career, the more death and mayhem follows.
Hal Ozsan ("90210") co-stars at the band's troubled lead singer, along with Betsy Rue (famously naked in My Bloody Valentine 3D) and the venerable Eric Roberts as the band's almost assuredly soon-to-be-dead manager. Michael Feifer (Dracula's Guest) and Randall Frakes (Hell Comes to Frogtown) are credited with the screenplay.
