Series creator and showrunner Jez Scharf says that with Netflix’s Bodkin, he wanted to “make a dark comedy about what the reality of making a true crime podcast might be like.” Will Forte stars as the true crime podcaster who travels to a small Irish town and stirs up a hornet’s nest with his investigation.
“It’s fascinating and set in these beautiful locations that only Ireland can provide,” says Forte in the three-minute behind-the-scenes featurette. The new video also features Siobhán Cullen (“Dove”), Robyn Cara (“Emmy”), Chris Walley (“Sean O’Shea”), and David Wilmot (“Seamus”) interview clips.
“Bodkin is a dark comedic thriller about a motley crew of podcasters who set out to investigate the mysterious disappearance of three strangers in a quaint, coastal Irish town. But once they start pulling at threads, they discover a story much bigger and weirder than they could have ever imagined,” reads Netflix’s synopsis.

The bubble, that surge of cash that over the past decades helped bankroll an unprecedented boom in TV drama production, appears to have burst.
TV producers, gathered in Cannes this week for the MIPTV international television market, are pondering a future in which the cost of TV drama continues to spike while the primary sources of financing, namely broadcasters and online streamers, are slashing their commissioning budgets.
“The cost of an hour of television drama in the U.K. has gone from £1.5 million ($1.86 million) to £2.5 million ($3.1 million) per hour, and you can’t finance that out of the U.K. market,” said Christian Baute of Headline Pictures, producers of Amazon Prime’s Man in the High Castle and Ten Percent. “Traditionally, over the last seven years, we went to America [for financing], but that money is ebbing [because] the American market is a mess.”

Exclusive: Channel 4’s Craig Charles-hosted daytime format Moneybags has become the network’s first show from its £30M ($40.6M) Global Format Fund to be recommissioned for a second season.
The fund is intended for international-facing formats that will appeal to both UK and global audiences and can be sold around the world.
Four have been commissioned so far, of which Moneybags, from former Endemol execs Lucas Church and David Flynn’s Youngest Media’s northern English hub, is the first to be given a second series and will air another 30 episodes later this year.
The high-stakes quiz tests contestants’ ability to think quickly as they answer each question by grabbing a moneybag with the correct answer when it passes along a conveyor belt. Those who grab the right answer earn that bag’s value, which can be anything from £1,000 to £100,000. Contestants risk losing everything if they pick up the wrong bag.

The Gucci family saga isn’t quite over.
Just months after the release of Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” — a film that could see Lady Gaga nominated for her second Oscar — a TV drama and documentary focusing on the Gucci family is in the works from Comcast-backed Sky Studios.
The company is in early stages of development on a high-end TV series, and is in pre-production on a documentary series, both of which will tell “the story of a great family and a great brand,” says producer Nils Hartmann, senior VP for Sky Studios Germany and Italy.
Both projects were brought roughly a year ago to Sky by Marco Belardi for Leone Film Group, which led to an agreement with several members of the Gucci family, including Alessandro Gucci, Guccio Gucci Jr. and Giorgio Gucci. Giorgio Gucci is a young Italian producer who will serve as executive producer on the still-untitled docuseries.

The success of HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” couldn’t have come at a better time for Wiip, the boutique production company behind Kate Winslet’s limited series. The murder mystery was nominated for 16 Emmys this year, earning raves for its unique storytelling and performances — and also for its twisty, satisfying ending.

BBC One and iPlayer have commissioned Objective Fiction to make six-part Toast Of Tinseltown (working title), which will spotlight eccentric and arrogant actor Toast as he attempts to become a movie star in Hollywood.

The Irish Film and Television Academy has selected Tom Sullivan’s Irish-language feature “Arracht” as Ireland’s entry for the 2021 Oscars’ best international feature film category.
The film is set in 1845 on the eve of the Irish famine. Fisherman Colmán Sharkey takes in a stranger at the behest of a local priest. Patsy, a former soldier in the Napoleonic wars, arrives just ahead of “the blight” that eventually wipes out the country’s potato crop, leading to the death and displacement of millions. Patsy’s subsequent actions set Colmán on a path that will take him to the edge of survival, and sanity, until he encounters an abandoned young girl who gives him a reason to live. Comedian and actor Lil Rel Howery is adding competition show host to his repertoire.
Howery has been tapped to host and executive produce the new NBC show “Small Fortune,” which is slated to go into production later this year. The show received a six-episode order back in April 2019, as Variety exclusively reported.
“Small Fortune” will see teams of three friends compete in the tiniest of challenges for a chance to win big money. In order to win, players must face heart-pounding tasks set in real-world destinations that test their precision and technique. From a shrunken sushi conveyor belt with tiny chopsticks (“Shrunken Sushi”) to a mini Ellis Island (“Statue of Liberteeny”), each team must prove their skills on miniature playing fields. Challenges will require considerable dexterity and intense focus because with games this small, there’s no room for error as the slightest miscalculation or tremble may result in elimination.

With the rise of streamers rapidly changing the television industry, it was inevitable that the biggest TV market would have to address the evolution. A year after exploring the so-called big shift in television, the theme of this year’s Mipcom conference is the Streaming Offensive, with sessions from speakers including Amazon Studios’ head of international originals James Farrell, Tubi CEO and founder Farhad Massoudi and Mipcom’s Personality of the Year, WarnerMedia Ent.’s chairman, Robert Greenblatt, who is preparing to launch HBO Max next spring.
“It was clear that this is the key topic today, and it is very important to look at that through different lenses,” says Laurine Garaude, director of Mipcom organizer Reed Midem’s television division. “Not just from the point of view of streamers, but the reaction and the response from linear channels, and the impact on production, investment and funding.”

In the run-up to Mipcom, the entertainment company Youngest Media is joining forces with the Paris-based production company Deeply Superficial to create Younger Media France.
Youngest Media was founded in 2016 by David Flynn and Lucas Church, respectively the former CEO/chairman and Cco at Endemol. Headquartered in London, Youngest Media has already delivered several popular formats, including “Small Fortune” and “Game of Clones.”
Deeply Superficial, meanwhile, was founded a year ago by Thierry Lachkar (pictured), the former Shine France founder and CEO. The company has developed a slate of scripted and unscripted projects.
“Youngest Media was set up to be globally facing from day one and, with this latest launch, we now have on-the-
ground presence in three of the world’s major markets, in addition to the growing reach of
our international formats,” said Lucas Church and David Flynn, co-founders of youngest Media.
