- Began his career working for Kodak and De Havilland Aircraft Corporation. After subsequent wartime service in the Royal Navy, he was employed in 1946 at Alliance Riverside Studios, Twickenham, as a clapper boy. From there, he graduated to camera assistant at Wessex Films and then worked as focus puller at Shepperton Studios for another six years. He became a camera operator in 1957.
- Was a member of the British Society of Cinematographers and the Guild of British Camera Technicians. In 1997, he was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
