- I am very, very ambitious for my songs to be as great as they can be. Having picked it up and fashioned it, and really given it a lot of attention and love, and nailed the second verse and chorus, I kind of think it exists on its own and goes out and has a life. And I would like to think it has a really good, big life.
- [on fellow-New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary, as a national hero] It was not just because he climbed a mountain, but he followed it up by building schools in Nepal and being an all-around good guy. And he was in the phone-book with everybody else. Humility, greatness, aspirations - the whole bit, wrapped up on one.
- It's a mystery, music, so I can't say I understand why one song is a hit and another one's not. Sometimes songs go through a convoluted series of pathways, through families and friends and mix-tapes, and they can end up rising to the top. I take great heart from that. That can take ten or fifteen years sometimes. I have a sense that my body of work is kind of becoming this lovely, living organism that pops out little sweet things every now and then.
