The Season 4 finale of “Stranger Things,” which streamed July 1, 2022 on Netflix, was recently nominated for six Emmy Awards: music supervision, non-prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing and stunt performance (x2). However, due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes, the upcoming Emmys, which were supposed to take place in September 2023, have been pushed back to January 2024. That means the heralded episode in question, titled “The Piggyback,” will have to wait an astounding 555 days between airing and trophy-bestowing.

Typically at the Emmy Awards, a TV show is judged on a full season as it aired entirely within a single eligibility period. However, in extremely rare cases, a drama or comedy will have what’s known as “orphaned” episodes that air outside of the cut-off date. That’s exactly why Season 4 of The Duffer Brothers‘ sci-fi megahit “Stranger Things” is eligible in two consecutive Emmy cycles, last year and this year. Gold Derby has exclusively learned which 13 categories Netflix is submitting for consideration at the 2023 Emmys (see below).
To recap, the first seven episodes of “Stranger Things 4” streamed on May 27, 2022 and thus competed at last year’s Emmys, where it nabbed 13 nominations and won five. But the last two episodes streamed on July 1, 2022, a full month after the eligibility period ended. TV academy rules stipulate that those two orphaned episodes are now eligible at the 2023 Emmys, but with a catch.

Everything Everywhere All at Once was named best picture at the 95th annual Academy Awards, which were handed out Sunday night.
Everything Everywhere also collected three acting awards, best leading actress for Michelle Yeoh, best supporting actor for Ke Huy Quan and best supporting actress for Jamie Lee Curtis. The film also won the best original screenplay Oscar and the best director trophy for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — aka Daniels — as well as best film editing for Paul Rogers. Heading into the show, Everything Everywhere led the nominees for the 2023 Oscars, with a total of 11, winning seven.
Elsewhere, Brendan Fraser was named best actor in a leading role for The Whale. German film All Quiet on the Western Front also scooped up four awards, including Oscars for best original score, production design, cinematography and international feature. Avatar: The Way of Water won best visual effects, while Top Gun: Maverick won the sound Oscar.

To many people – and that includes many academy members – there might be something esoteric about the Best Sound category at the Oscars. And yet it might be one of the most important technical crafts involved with filmmaking. If you don’t understand what the actors are saying, then it’s harder to connect with them or what the filmmaker was trying to achieve. A movie’s score and sound effects also need to be properly recorded and balanced to make any film as much a sonic experience as a visual one.

When it comes to creating movie sound, it’s all about world-building, says Julian Howarth, sound mixer on Avatar: The Way of Water. “And then it’s to make something believable, emotional and to tell a story,” he adds. “In any film, that’s what we’re here to do.”
For Howarth’s team, that was about telling an immersive story on the fictional moon of Pandora. But the other Oscar nominees for best sound also placed viewers on a World War I battlefield for All Quiet on the Western Front, in Gotham City for The Batman, in the front row for Elvis Presley’s most memorable performances for Elvis and in the cockpits of naval fighter jets for Top Gun: Maverick.

The motion picture academy made it a little easier in 2021 to predict the winners by combining Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into one category: Best Sound. Both sound mixers and sound editors are recognized in the combined category. Up to six statuettes will be awarded to one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers. It can be difficult to differentiate the sound mixing of a film from the sound editing.

The nominations for the upcoming 95th edition of Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday by hosts Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams, with ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ leading the pack with as many as nine nominations.

The Motion Picture Sound Editors on Monday unveiled nomination for the 70th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards. Winners will be announced February 26 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles.

It was up to supervising sound editors Will Files and Matt Yocum and dialogue and Adr supervisor Eliza Zebert to build the soundscape for Korean War-set “Devotion,” a story that centers on the friendship between Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors) the first Black aviator in U.S. Navy history, and fellow fighter pilot Tom Hudner (Glen Powell).
Yocum, an alumnus of Savannah College of Art and Design, was able to record a real 1950 F4U Corsair, making it period-correct. “It was important for us to get authentic sound to feel the weight and visceral quality of these aircraft, because, at the end of the day, they are characters in the film that had to be brought to life and participate in the story with Tom Hudner, Jesse Brown and the other pilots,” he says.
To collect the sounds, Yocum flew to the Erickson Aircraft Collection in Oregon with friend and fellow sound expert Kai Paquin.

The annual Hpa Awards recognizes postproduction talent in areas including color grading, editing, sound and visual effects.

The ambitious fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things involved developing the look and sound of its threatening, vine-laden antagonist Vecna. Creator-showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer drew early inspiration for the character from Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street series and Pinhead from the Hellraiser franchise, says Michael Maher Jr., one of three VFX supervisors from the Emmy-nominated effects team. In all, their work involved a staggering 4,400 VFX shots created by nearly 30 effects vendors including Dneg, Digital Domain, Rodeo FX, Lola and Important Looking Pirates, plus Scanline, which Netflix acquired in November.

Dozens of sound designers, engineers and mixers have signed a petition protesting the Academy’s decision to award the sound Oscar during its pre-telecast hour on Sunday.
A source close to the sound branch also revealed that guild members are planning on wearing their guild badges upside down as a form of silent protest over the demotion of crafts at the Oscars.
Karol Urban, President of the Cinema Audio Society confirmed the protest might go one step further. In a statement, Urban said, “This weekend, the Oscars may be turned upside down as we may see winners from all categories accept their Oscars upside down in a silent show of solidarity with the eight affected categories. We are all filmmakers of equal importance.”

The proton pack from 1984’s “Ghostbusters” is back in “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” Used in the original film by the team of paranormal sleuths played by Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson, the pack’s gun blasts a bright stream of light that sounds like a sizzling electric current followed by an explosion.
That’s just one of the few aural easter eggs the film contains.
Director Jason Reitman needed help on the teaser trailer for the new film, which opened Nov. 19, and contacted re-recording mixer Will Files. “The idea was this girl finds a proton pack in this abandoned barn,” says Files. “She doesn’t know what it is, and she starts it up. You hear it off-screen, and it dies. [But] by the very end [of the trailer] it comes to life.” His first instinct was to dig through the sound archives at Sony to see what material existed from the first film.

‘Babyteeth’ is the feature debut of established theatre and TV director Shannon Murphy.
Shannon Murphy’s drama Babyteeth has swept the board at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (Aacta) awards, winning nine prizes including best film and all four acting awards.

Shannon Murphy’s drama Babyteeth has swept the board at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (Aacta) awards, winning nine prizes including best film and all four acting awards.
The Australian title – which premiered in Competition at the Venice Fil Festival in 2019 – was nominated for 13 awards, also taking home best direction for Murphy, best screenplay for Rita Kalnejais, best original score for Amanda Brown and best casting for Kirsty McGregor and Stevie Ray.

Matchbox Pictures/Dirty Films’ Stateless dominated the Aacta Industry Awards on Friday evening, scooping up all of the television drama prizes.
The six gongs the ABC production received were for: cinematography, for the work of Bonnie Elliott; costume design, to Mariot Kerr; editing, to Mark Atkin; production design, to Melinda Doring; score, to composer Cornel Wilczek, and sound, going to Tom Heuzenroeder, Pete Smith, Michael Darren and Des Kenneally.
This year’s craft and technical awards were a little different thanks to Covid-19, presented virtually in a ceremony hosted by Claire Hooper.
Presenters included Rachel Griffiths, Ed Kavalee, Rhys Nicholson, Dilruk Jayasinha, Celia Pacquola and Bernard Curry.
In film, The Invisible Man and True History of the Kelly Gang each scooped three awards, and Babyteeth two.

The sound in “Dunkirk” is crucial for this almost-silent, radically structured action movie. And “War for the Planet of the Apes” is also relatively dialogue light–except when Woody Harrelson’s Kurtz-like Colonel and Andy Serkis as Caesar explode in a dramatic face-off. And each time Ryan Gosling’s K in “Blade Runner,” Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman or Ansel Elgort’s Baby Driver enters a new landscape, the sound design clues us into what’s going on.

Abrams' old-and-new hybrid philosophy, the esteemed team of Gary Rydstrom, Dave Acord, Chris Scarabosio, Will Files, Matt Wood, and Andy Nelson not only made use of Ben Burtt’s iconic sounds from the original trilogy but also new ones that he created. The result once again instilled a sense of the familiar with the uniquely futuristic. Thus, Kylo Ren's cool-looking lightsaber sounds unstable, just like his volatile temperament, which makes it seem even more dangerous, while Bb-8 sounds funnier than R2-D2 (thanks in part to vocal assistance by Bill Hader and Ben Schwartz). 2. "The Revenant": The team (led by supervising editors Lon Bender, Randy Thom and Martin Hernandez) brilliantly make nature a sonic character and immerse us in Leonardo DiCaprio's intense journey in the most effective way. They found existing sounds (bear vocalizations, trees creaking in the wind) and recorded them.

Cling. Clang. Crash. Welcome to the category of Best Sound Editing, which awards the creation and integration of artificial sounds into a movie's soundtrack. This distinguishes this category from Best Sound Mixing, which awards the mixing of the film's overall soundtrack. Due to the emphasis on creating artificial sounds, action films and war films tend to do particularly well here. The branch is also not afraid to give a film a standalone nomination (this decade, that has included "All is Lost," "Tron: Legacy," "Drive" and "Unstoppable"). In the not-too-distant past, animated films were also practically annual staples, which is unsurprising given the need to manifest everything you hear in such productions. The sound branch has its favorite contenders who regularly return. Names like Richard Hymns and Wylie Stateman immediately jump to mind. This is likely the case to a greater extent in Sound Editing than Sound Mixing. But every year also sees new nominees.

"I never considered myself going into 'Shotgun Stories' as a filmmaker with worldly aspirations in terms of the stories I'm trying to tell. In fact, it was quite the opposite; they were very specific and very regional. But I realized that there's power in coming up with some kind of universal feeling and I was very much aware when selecting this topic for this film."
The topic, in this case, is anxiety; the film is "Take Shelter." And the man who made it, the man talking about his lack of worldly aspirations, is Jeff Nichols. He might want to find some and fast; "Take Shelter" is a very powerful film, even more powerful than his impressive debut, "Shotgun Stories," from 2007. In my opinion, it's one of the best movies of the year.
