- Her novel, "Bridget Jones's Diary", was first published on 15 November 1997 as a series of columns in the British newspaper "The Daily Telegraph".
- 1980s: Worked as a researcher for BBC local TV in Bristol in the 1980s and as a researcher and reporter for children's TV news programme John Craven's Newsround aka Newsround (1972). It was her experience in the latter job of fouling-up a live link from outside the hospital where Princess Diana was expecting Prince William that was the inspiration for the scene in Bridget Jones's Diary (2001) where Bridget reports from a fire station and is seen descending a fireman's pole and hitting the camera lens with her bottom.
