It's not a controversial statement to say that Zack Snyder can be a polarizing filmmaker. His fans will defend him until they're blue in the face, while his detractors will liken him to cinematic cancer. Me? I'm more of a Snyder agnostic. I like some of his movies, I dislike others. But there's one positive thing I can say for sure: the man knows how to craft an image. Like many filmmakers of his generation, Snyder got his start in music videos, and that taught him how to create memorable, evocative imagery that looks, for lack of a better word, cool.
"Cool" seems to be Snyder's approach to his visuals in general — and you know what? He frequently succeeds. Even if you don't like the Snyder film you're watching, there's a good chance it'll still be loaded with cool images. Because of Snyder's penchant for visual fireworks, his movies often lend themselves to great trailers.

After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, three separate moments from John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, and the “Jason vs. Tina” battle in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek is continuing his The Best Scene video series with a look at the opening action of director Zack Snyder‘s 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake (watch it Here). This is when zombie hell breaks loose and Johnny Cash kicks in on the soundtrack. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above.

In 2007, the "Saw" franchise took a very big swing with the aim of setting the movies up for years to come. Darren Lynn Bousman returned to the director's chair for the third time with "Saw IV," which aimed to move beyond Tobin Bell's John Kramer by giving Jigsaw a path forward without the man who started these twisted, bloody games in the first place. The film's ending not only offers one of the biggest twists in the entire series — but also one of the most important. Divorced of everything that came after, it was a big, bold, critical change in direction.
For those who may need a brief refresher, Bell plays the central figure of the films as John Kramer, aka Jigsaw, a man with incurable cancer who dedicates himself to "saving" people in a way that he sees fit. He selects people who are ungrateful for the life...

The CW’s “Riverdale” dove into the past of its biggest bad, Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos), this week with a long-awaited origin story for the villain to explain, well, why he’s such a villain. Alec Baldwin and 11 Other Actors Who’ve Played Donald Trump on Screen (Photos)
Phil Hartman, “Saturday Night Live” (1988-1990)
Long before Alec Baldwin donned a blond wig, the late Phil Hartman played Donald Trump in a series of sketches. The first mocked Donald and Ivana Trump (Jan Hooks) as out-of-touch rich people at Christmas-time, while later skits depicted the couple’s tabloid divorce.
Darrell Hammond, “Saturday Night Live” (1999-2011)
Before Baldwin, Hammond was the go-to impersonator of Trump, starting with two sketches in 1989 and then off and on in multiple sketches over the next decade. He even returned to don a too-long red tie when Trump was guest host in 2015.
Louis Ferreira, “Trump Unauthorized” (2005)
The Portugese-born actor — best known for his work on TV series like “Stargate Universe,” “Breaking Bad” and “S.W.A.T.” — starred as the real estate mogul-turned reality star in a 2005 ABC movie.

CBS’ S.W.A.T. team this Wednesday raced to find former unit leader Buck after he fell conspicuously off the grid and they came to realize he planned to harm himself. As that manhunt played out in flashback, we saw each team member discuss with a counselor the mental and emotional difficulties inherent to their line of work, all the while never quite disclosing Buck’s ultimate fate.
Midway through the hour, Buck (played by Louis Ferreira ) was tracked down via telephone — alive, at a diner, but unwilling to hear out Hondo (Shemar Moore) and put off what he intended to do.

Bzhaun Rhoden (Van Helsing), Louis Ferreira (Bad Blood) and Peter Shinkoda (Daredevil) are set for recurring roles on the upcoming fourth season of Amazon’s Emmy-winning drama series The Man in the High Castle.
Developed by Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files) based on Philip K. Dick’s award-winning 1962 alternate history novel, The Man in the High Castle explores what would have happened if the Allied Powers had lost World War II.
Rhoden will play Benjy, a member of the Black Communist Rebellion. Though he’s young, he’s seen a lot, and he doesn’t look out of place in the Revolution. You can tell he’s a survivor.
Ferreira is Brad Bellows, the leader of the D.C. Resistance cell. Years of survival in the resistance means he doesn’t trust easily, and he is suspicious of Juliana Crain.
Shinkoda portrays Kazu Suzuki, the very distinguished Royal Secretary to the Crown Princess.

Dawn of the Dead remains director Zack Snyder's gory masterpiece.
I was a latecomer to zombie films, mostly out of terror, but also because there just weren't many memorable zombie movies coming out in the late '90s. Believe it or not, besides George A. Romero's Dead films, which I would discover a little while after my first viewing of Zack Snyder's 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake, zombie movies and TV shows (non-existent in the '90s) weren't the cash cows they are today.
28 Days Later's Rage-infected psychopaths are largely responsible for revitalizing this gruesome subgenre, thanks to director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland's vision. These two filmmakers saw potential in this corner of cinema that had yet to be unlocked. While Romero, the father of the modern zombie film, used the apocalypse to comment on society's greed and prejudices, Boyle and Garland discovered more personal stories.

While Romero, the father of the modern zombie film, used the apocalypse to comment on society's greed and prejudices, Boyle and Garland discovered more personal stories.

Gimme Shelter and Grey Gardens documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles has died, aged 88.
Maysles passed away from natural causes on Thursday (March 5), a spokesperson for the Maysles Centre told The Hollywood Reporter.
Albert formed one-half of a filmmaking duo with his late brother David Maysles, and together they released many acclaimed documentaries.
The Maysles brothers chronicled the Rolling Stones' infamous concert at Altamont for 1970's Gimme Shelter, and later explored the lives of two New York eccentrics in Grey Gardens.
The making of Grey Gardens was dramatised by HBO in the Emmy-winning television movie of the same name, in which Arye Gross and Justin Louis played the Maysles brothers.
Albert more recently worked with Espn to complete his 1980 documentary Muhammad and Larry, which chronicled a title bout between Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes.
Last summer, Albert was honoured with a National Medal of Art by Us president Barack Obama.

Watch Digital Spy's interview with Sheridan Smith about Cilla
ITV's Cilla Black biopic, which starred Sheridan Smith in the title role, launched with bumper ratings last night. Cilla attracted the channel's biggest drama audience launch since a little old show called Broadchurch and it has also won rave reviews.
Smith has been singled out in particular for her incredible performance as the Liverpudlian popstar in the swinging '60s and the only criticism that some viewers seemed to have was that she was too good a singer when she performed as Cilla. High praise indeed. Here is a roundup of the critics and Twitter verdicts:
The Critics:
The Telegraph
"Smith sang her heart out, catching perfectly the bluesy belter within the girl next door, but rather than rushing her to fame, the action unfolded slowly enough to show her falling at the first hurdle as she became crippled with nerves singing for Brian Epstein.

The ratings for the first season of Motive weren't very good but ABC renewed it anyway (in part because they license it from Canada so it's cheaper). Will they want a third season or will the series be cancelled instead? Stay tuned!

ABC has picked up the second season of Motive, their summer police procedural series. The next 13 episodes will air next summer.
Motive centers around Angie Flynn (Kristin Lehman), a single mother and Vancouver detective who investigates the motives of killers. Each episode starts with the crime and shows viewers what led to it. Others in the cast include Louis Ferreira, Brendan Penny, Lauren Holly, Cameron Bright, and Roger Cross.
The series debuted on ABC last May and the 13 episodes averaged just a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.96 million total viewers. The series hit a low of a 0.7 rating with 3.95 million in early August but the numbers grew after that.

ABC has ordered a second season of Motive, its Canadian-made summer drama series. With last week’s renewal of fellow freshman Mistresses and the previous pickup of veteran Canadian import Rookie Blue, ABC will be bringing back its entire summer scripted lineup next summer. Created by Daniel Cerone (Dexter), Motive opened with a 1.4/4 in adults 18-49 behind Dancing With The Stars in May and was relatively steady, ending its first season with the same rating last month. The series stars Kristin Lehman as Detective Angie Flynn and Louis Ferreira as her partner, Detective Oscar Vega. It takes a different spin on the crime procedural format by identifying the Killer and Victim at the beginning of each episode and then piecing together the connection between the two characters and what drove the Killer to commit murder. Developed by CTV, the series is produced by Foundation Features and Lark Productions in association with Bell Media,...

A weekly feature in which we spotlight shining stars
The Performer | John Oliver
The Show | The Daily Show With Jon Stewart
The Airdate | July 31, 2013
The story of New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, whose sleazy exploits ran him out of Washington and may cost him yet another election, is a tawdry piece of comedy all on its own. But interim Daily Show host John Oliver’s outrage has turned each twist of the tabloid-ready tale into something transcendent.
Take, for instance, Oliver’s finger-wagging response on Wednesday when Weiner indirectly compared his situation to New York City in the wake of the Sept.

Uncomfortably partnered for the day and following a lead on a drug dealer, the women suddenly found themselves covered in heroin tainted with anthrax ... and stuck in the art gallery where they had collared the dealer, after he up-ended a table that sent the powder flying all over the two cops. 'Just another day at the office," as Swarek wryly summed it up.
In the course of being treated with antibiotics, McNally and alleged "ice queen" Cruz had plenty of time to hash things out. The initially confrontational tone changed, though, once Cruz confessed she...
