In comic book form, Judge Dredd — created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra — made his debut in a 1977 issue of the British comic book "2000 A.D." In the future world of Judge Dredd, set in Mega-City One (a satire of the United States), crime has become so bad that street cops have also been given the clout of court officials, arresting suspects and putting them on trial right on the spot. The Judges, as they are called, have every right to execute suspects on a whim, which they do often. Judge Dredd himself is an antihero, serving as a parody of authoritarianism.
In the 1995 film "Judge Dredd," directed by Danny Cannon, the character was given the blockbuster treatment, with the film sporting a hefty budget of 85 million and Dredd played by Sylvester Stallone. Despite impressive design and makeup effects, "Judge Dredd" was very poorly received, and the character was put...

Back in October, the fifth issue in the comiXology Originals series Elephantmen 2261: The Death of Shorty was released online, and it marked the 50th Elephantmen cover by artist Boo Cook. To celebrate the milestone, Daily Dead was recently provided with a Q&A with Cook for our readers to enjoy. In his wide-spanning reflection on his work, Cook discusses the creative approach to his artwork, collaborating with writer Richard Starkings, and he selects his five favorite covers that he's done for the Elephantmen series.
"Boo, you've been the cover artist on Elephantmen for 50 issues now. What's that mean to you, having such consistency with a series?
Boo Cook: In all honesty, I was quite surprised to discover I’d notched up 50 covers for Elephantmen! Life as a freelancer is kind of a blur plunging from one job to the next, radically changing tack with each new cover or strip,...

The legendary 2000Ad artist has passed away.
Carlos Ezquerra, the Spanish artist who co-created Judge Dredd for 2000Ad, has died at the age of 70.
The sad news was confirmed on the 2000Ad website, who posted a photo of Ezquerra at his drawing desk.
“One of the all-time greatest comic book artists, the Spanish illustrator was one of the titans of 2000Ad,” read the tribute.
“Modest and unassuming, Carlos was nonetheless a legend whose contribution to the global comic book industry cannot be understated. His distinctive style - characterised by breathtakingly dynamic, high-energy storytelling and the distinctive ridged thick inking that outlined so many key moments - was instantly recognizable.
“Despite a brush with lung cancer in 2010, he continued to work and, although the cancer returned this year it was believed he was recovering well. His sudden death is a profound loss not just to 2000Ad but to the comic book medium.

When he’s not being badgered about the embryonic Star Trek 4 – for the record, Paramount is still playing things close to the vest – you’ll likely find Karl Urban fielding questions about Judge Dredd and, specifically, the spinoff TV series coming by way of Im Global and Rebellion.
Aptly titled Judge Dredd: Mega-City One, Urban has expressed his interest in the project multiple times before, and even confirmed that he had opened talks with the Powers That Be about potentially suiting up as John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s square-jawed law enforcer once again.
But there’s still no sign of a deal just yet, and that’s something Urban reaffirmed to Screen Rant while talking to them about Thor: Ragnarok. Essentially, it seems the decision rests in the hands of Rebellion.

Marvel at the wider world of Mega-City One.
IGN has today premiered the first concept art for Judge Dredd: Mega-City One, Im Global and Rebellion’s long-brewing revival that’s poised to bring John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s square-jawed law enforcer to the small screen. And though the end product may be a full two years away, Mega-City One has been coming on in leaps and bounds.
Case in point: Series producer Brian Jenkins recently announced that Karl Urban has come into contention to once again don the mantle of judge, jury, and executioner. Negotiations are said to be ongoing, but it’s clear that both parties are keen to turn that long-requested dream into a reality.
Story-wise, there are precious few details currently available for Judge Dredd: Mega-City One, but this first-look concept art does present a faithful rendition of Wagner and Ezquerra’s dystopian universe,...

Jason Kingsley, executive producer on the upcoming TV revival Judge Dredd: Mega-City One, has reaffirmed that negotiations with Karl Urban, who donned that iconic helmet for Pete Travis’ 2012 reboot, are indeed underway.
Word of Urban possibly reprising the role of judge, jury, and executioner first surfaced online just yesterday, when the actor himself told those in attendance at last weekend’s Star Trek Las Vegas Convention that he would “love” to suit up as Mega-City One’s no-nonsense law enforcer.
And though the casting of Karl Urban would certainly fire Judge Dredd: Mega-City One into the mainstream spotlight – if it isn’t there already – Jason Kingsley told Screen Geek that for the sake of Dredd fans, he’s more concerned with the actual quality of the show itself, stressing that “this needs to be done right” after so many false starts.

Is Karl Urban about to assume the role of judge, jury, and executioner once more?
The Thor: Ragnarok actor appeared at last weekend’s Star Trek Las Vegas Convention (via ComicBook.com), and fielded questions about the iconic sci-fi series, Discovery, and the current status of Star Trek 4.
But when the conversation inevitably veered toward Dredd and, in particular, the upcoming TV revival in the works at Im Global and Rebellion, Urban confirmed that he’s already entered negotiations about the possibility of joining the cast. Known simply as Judge Dredd: Mega-City One, the live-action series promises a fresher take on John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s square-jawed law enforcer, as he attempts to police an overcrowded metropolis teeming with 400 million potential criminals.
It’s a tantalizing pitch, so it’s no wonder longtime Dredd fans have been banging the drum for Karl Urban to appear. Granted, the actor...

After years spent petitioning for a live-action continuation to Pete Travis and Karl Urban’s criminally underseen Dredd movie, six weeks ago, fans uncovered the next best thing when Im Global and Rebellion nailed down plans for Judge Dredd: Mega-City One, a TV series that will signal the return of John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s leather-clad lawman.
Little is currently known about the tone and direction of Mega-City One, only that it will honor the source material by delivering an adult-oriented take on that famous judge, jury, and executioner, who attempts to uphold some semblance of law and order in a metropolis teeming with 400 million citizens – every one of them a potential criminal.
Filming on Judge Dredd: Mega-City One is yet to get underway, and Rebellion CEO and Dredd producer Jason Kingsley believes the show is at least two years out from its anticipated premiere. But when it eventually does march onto the small screen, it’ll seemingly merge the “macabre with the insane.”
Speaking with Sfa Magazine (with a tip of the hat to GamesRadar), Kingsley highlighted the inherent advantages of long-form storytelling, and how it’ll ultimately benefit this particular adaptation of Dredd.
Long-form storytelling makes showing Mega-City One and its inhabitants much easier. Trying to fit all of that into a two-hour movie is very hard. My best guess is that it’s at least two years away. But we’re so early in the process that things could happen a bit faster, or much more slowly.
That two-year window is simply an estimation on Kingsley’s part, and there are undoubtedly factors in play that could accelerate – or indeed slow – the creative process over the next 12 to 18 months.
Dark fantasy elements are one area that would be great to explore. The show will combine the macabre with the insane and the light-hearted. It’s a big place, after all, with 400 million stories to tell.
John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s square-jawed judge, jury, and executioner is officially making tracks toward the small screen, just don’t expect Judge Dredd: Mega-City One to premiere until 2019 – you know, assuming Im Global doesn’t get the ball rolling sooner than expected.

Two Hollywood flops later, John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s square-jawed judge, jury, and executioner is officially headed to television in the form of Judge Dredd: Mega-City One.
First announced late last week, the live-action TV series has entered “early development” over at Im Global and Rebellion, and fans are quietly hoping that the leather-claw lawman is about to get the adaptation he deserves. Without any casting news to report, Mega-City One is still a ways away, but one question that has loomed over the project ever since it was announced is whether Karl Urban will have a role to play in the small-screen revival.

The Mega-City world of Judge Dredd may soon be coming to the small screen. Im Global Television has partnered with UK games developer and publisher Rebellion to turn the iconic character from legendary British comic book “2000 Ad” into a television series that will be titled “Judge Dredd: Mega City One.”
Set in the 22nd century, the ensemble drama series will follow a team of judges —futuristic cops invested with the power to be judges, jury, and executioners— as they encounter the challenges of a world in which east-coast cities have merged into a giant megalopolis.

There is no question that Garth Ennis knows how to write a great WWII comic. His current series Dreaming Eagles, which tells the story of African America pilots during WWII, is one of my current favorite books. So considering his pedigree it makes sense he was selected to write the first comic in the partnership between Dark Horse and gaming company Wargaming.
Unfortunately this first issue of World of Tanks: Roll Out does not give us a lot to be excited about. If you are a diehard history nut that cannot get enough of WWII fiction ‘Roll Out’ will help you get your fix, but based on this one issue it does not appear this series is bringing anything widely different to the genre if WWII drama.

A few days ago, the internet was ablaze- well, at least the portion of the internet used by the small, rabid fan base of Dredd- with word that a certain sequel was in development. See, actor Karl Urban was speaking at Denver Comic Con, and he apparently made a few comments pertaining to Dredd 2 being in some stage of development. He said he would definitely come back for it if he felt the project had "depth and substance," according to website Science Fiction.
So reports began to spring up like wildfire, as they tend to do, because the few people that saw Dredd loved it. It didn't do so hot in wide release, but had stellar numbers once it was released for home distribution. Murmurs of a sequel have popped up before, and the latest chatter included the idea that it could come to a streaming service like Netflix-...

Across nearly four decades and two publishing companies, the Star Wars comic book universe has seen thousands of issues chronicling tales set in a galaxy, far, far away. Following Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, fellow subsidiary company Marvel reclaimed the license to publish new Star Wars comics in 2015. Along with it, they received publishing rights to all prior Star Wars comics, including those released by Dark Horse when it held the license (from the early 90s up to 2015). Now, thanks to Marvel’s digital subscription service, Marvel Unlimited, the vast majority (though not yet all) of these comics are available for subscribers of the service to read in one convenient place.
But with all those comics to choose from, and all rendered equally non-canonical by Lucasfilm, where is a Star Wars comic book novice to start? Right here, with this list of ten single issues, storylines and series from across...

I had the wonderful opportunity to get to ask the writer and artist for Johhny Red, legendary Preacher creator Garth Ennis and artist extraordinaire Keith Burns (The Boys, Castles in the Sky).
Johhny Red came out earlier this month and is the story of Legendary British fighter ace, Johnny 'Red' Redburn, returns once more as the commander of the Falcons – a Russian fighter squadron battling the Nazis in the skies over Stalingrad. But dogfighting Messerschmitts is about to become the least of his troubles when the Nvkd – the notorious Soviet secret police – come calling!
Latino-Review: With the original comic series “Battle” being a big hit did either of you feel any pressure delivering a product to the fans of the original?

Grant Morrison, Neil Gaiman, Pat Mills and John Wagner are amongst the talking heads in the first full documentary about the mighty 2000Ad.
It feels surprising that no one has attempted to chart the history of 2000Ad in a documentary before, given its legacy, but with its current upward trajectory and the devotion that it inspires (especially in the wake of the critically acclaimed but commercially melancholy film of Judge Dredd) it’s probably the best time to make a feature with a positive outlook.
Future Shock! is the work of Paul Goodwin, whose main task appears to have been assembling a wealth of talent to interview. With the exception of Alan Moore, Mark Millar and Garth Ennis, the big names are all present, which means you get to see Neil Gaiman sitting in front of an apparently colour coded bookcase, Bryan Talbot enthusiastically miming someone being impaled on a sword,...

Touted as the potential follow-up to the Dredd movie, here’s why Rob thinks Dredd: Origins is prime for a big screen adaptation…
One of the most frequently posted comments on this website over the past year? It'd be something along the lines of 'they can make [name of sequel that sounds not very good], but they can't make Dredd 2'. The frustration is understandable. When the Karl Urban-headlined Dredd movie tanked at the Us box office in particular, it seemed to take any hopes of a follow-up to what had been a raw, worthwhile film with it.
But the flame of hope still flickers, with a new web series the latest addition to the world of Dredd. However, should all concerned be looking for a future direction for Dredd 2, then Judge Dredd: Origins is surely prime material. It's a 2007 23-issue arc written and illustrated by Judge Dredd creators John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra to...

2000 Ad: Prog 1900 & 1901
Written by John Wagner, Dan Abnett, Rob Williams, Pat Mills, Ian Edgington
Art by Carlos Ezquerra, Richard Elson, Abigail Ryder, Michael Dowling, John Higgins, D’Israeli
TV fans often defend their favourite shows with assurances that “it gets better.” It’s a given, at least in North America, that shows take time to truly find their footing. British television, however, is understood to be a place where the writer rules, and is thus free to craft more satisfying, finite stories untainted by corporate committee-think.
That’s not so much the case with British comics icon Judge Dredd, who debuted nearly 40 years ago in the second issue (or rather, “prog”) of 2000 Ad. Prog 1900 (on shelves this week) and next week’s 1901 feature a multi-part Dredd story, “Block Judge”, by the founding creative team of John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. So, the creative continuity is there, but the character hasn’t stayed particularly fresh.

In a world in which we are apparently to get a full half-dozen Guy Ritchie-directed King Arthur movies, it’s a mystery that no one in Hollywood has seen fit to cough up the greenbacks for a single Dredd sequel. Pete Travis and Alex Garland’s 2012 adaptation of the 2000Ad comic strip about an implacable future cop who lives to fight crime on the streets of the sci-fi metropolis Mega-City One has attained the status of a bona fide cult classic in record time. It’s one of the rare genre movies that bears regular rewatching; a film as muscular and unyielding as its justice-dispensing,...

(Cbr) "Dredd" has gone a long way to earn a huge and deserved fan following since its 2012 release. Unfortunately, director Pete Travis’ adaptation wasn’t a box-office hit. And yet, there’s still hope for a follow-up Appearing at Wizard World Chicago Con, star Karl Urban dropped a few more potential details. Luckily MovieWeb was there to listen in. “Why yes, there is a definite possibility,” Urban said. “But, it is more likely that we will do the ‘Origins’ story with Dredd trekking through the cursed earth to find the first Chief Judge Fargo.” Fargo was the first Judge, a celebrated figure of law and order who is Judge Dredd’s clone father. The character’s early days were fleshed out in a serialized "2000 Ad" story called “Origins” by Judge Dredd creators John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. Published between 2006 and 2007, the story followed Dredd as he traveled outside of Mega-City...

I really enjoyed Karl Urban's Dredd, and like all of the other fans, I want to see a sequel happen. Earlier this year Urban said that there have been conversations with screenwriter Alex Garland and Lionsgate about bringing another Dredd movie to the big screen.
While attending Chicago Comic-Con the actor was asked about the possibility of Dredd 2 and he revealed that if it happens it will most likely be a prequel instead of a sequel. Here's what he had to say as reported by Movie Web:
"Why yes, there is a definite possibility. But, it is more likely that we will do the origins story with Dredd trekking through the cursed earth to find the first Chief Judge Fargo."
I think that would make for an awesome movie. The origins story for Dredd was created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, and the comic run that told the...

Reboots and remakes are a dime a dozen in contemporary Hollywood, with seemingly every studio harkening back to yesteryear to bring back a host of beloved cinematic IPs for better or worse. However, few of these nostalgic attempts at reinvigorating a franchise manage to satisfy the core fan base let alone recoup their production cost. And one such reboot to fall foul to the latter was 2012’s beloved and crucially under-appreciated Dredd.
Despite being held up by fans as an instant classic, Pete Travis’ visualization of Mega City One’s judge, jury and executioner was deemed a commercial dud, thereby extinguishing any potential hope of a sequel. Nevertheless, the film’s ardent supporters have been rallying for the story to continue ever since.
And, during the recent Chicago Comic-Con, Karl Urban himself stated that if a Dredd sequel were to make it to the big screen, it would in all likelihood be an origin story.

I like to think that the following happened on a daily basis during the filming of Kick-Ass 2 - all cast and crew members signalled their arrival on set by announcing, "I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubblegum."
If no one actually did take the opportunity to make a tenuous title-based association and quote Roddy Piper's best line in They Live, it's a damn shame. If Kick-Ass 3 happens, someone (everyone) involved can start this motivational ritual/repeat film reference in-joke when shooting begins on that sequel. In advance, you're welcome.

As we reported recently, there's a growing groundswell of support for a campaign to try and convince studio chiefs to get work moving on a sequel to Alex Garland and Pete Travis' excellent Dredd film, which stands as easily one of the most faithful and engaging comic book adaptations of recent years. The publishers of 2000 Ad themselves have thrown their weight behind the campaign, and whether or not it's successful, its very existence does show the appetite that's out there for such a strong and well-grounded take on the comic's long-running and beloved stable of characters.

We here at DC are massive fans of Pete Travis’ Dredd (review), which contained a level of ultra violent sci-fi badassery and satire unseen since Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop.
And though it died a most undeserving death at the box office, it found a massive audience on home video, numbers that stars Karl Urban and writer Alex Garland are using as leverage to get a worthy sequel made.
Now rights holder 2000 Ad has launched an official petition and online campaign which they plan on bringing to Lionsgate to show the fan demand for a sequel. Click here to sign the petition, and visit the Facebook page to help spread the word!
A world where there are five Scary Movies and no Dredd sequels isn't a world we want to live in.

Around these parts we have a lot of love for Pete Travis’ Dredd (review). The movie, though not as good as The Raid, which it is always compared to, kicked a copious amount of ass; and its star, Karl Urban, played The Perfect Judge Dredd.
Though the flick didn't exactly light up the box office, it exploded on Blu-ray and DVD; and during the San Diego Comic-Con Airlock Alpha caught up with Urban, who briefly discussed sequel potential. “It’s certainly my hope that we get to make more,” he tells the site. “Clearly it has found an audience. The home video sales for Dredd 3D just went through the roof. I think it sold 650,000 units in the first week.”

And yet, in spite of getting some critical attacks, the film has found space to become a solid hit. Furthermore, its director, a chatty and lovely man by the name of Ben Gregor, actually wrote back to one critic- Christopher Tookey of the Daily Mail - taking issue with some of the attacks in that paper's review.

Comicsalliance.com are reporting that starting with a Free Comic Book Day (Fcbd) issue on May 4 2013, publisher Idw is reprinting a series of classic Judge Dredd stories in colour for the very first time.
Charlie Kirchoff, who also is the colourist of the current series, will give new life to the classic tales that will kick off with the issue’s “Judge Death”. This classic story by writer John Wagner and artist Brian Bolland, will feature a newly-coloured Bolland cover. 2000 Ad editor-in-chief Matt Smith issued the following statement about the reprints:
“It’s very exciting to see these classic Dredd stories given an extra dimension. New readers will get to see some of the seminal tales that established Dredd as the UK’s most important comics character, and old-school fans of the future lawman can re-experience their favourite series in a whole new light.”

Dredd brings the cult comic hero to the big screen the way the character was meant to be . ultra-violent, with very little dialogue, and never removing his helmet. Within the opening minutes of the film, Karl Urban completely owns the character and helps Judge Dredd fans forget that other guy who tried to bring the law to Mega-City One in 1995. Based on the Judge Dredd character (created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra) from the British comic 2000 Ad, the film was directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point) with a screenplay by Alex Garland (28 Days Later). Dredd stars Urban, Olivia Thirlby, and Lena Headey (who sports several facial scars and has never looked nastier on...

Judgement is coming when Dredd hits Blu-ray and DVD on January 14th, 2013. We have three copies of the Blu-ray to give away to our readers.
The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed. During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation.

The near future. America is an irradiated wasteland with a single vast outpost stretching across the eastern seaboard: Mega City One. This massive urban dystopia has a population of over 400 million people, and each one of them is a potential perpetrator. With government and country now gone, a powerful and efficient hybrid of the police and judicial system has given birth to a group of new guardians of the law with the power to dispense instant justice and punishment. Trained from an early age to be unbreakable, incorruptible upholders of the law, The Judges are judge, jury and executioner. One of these judges, Judge Dredd, is called by the Chief Judge to assess a twenty-one year old rookie, and mutant (she’s a psychic), Cassandra Anderson, who wants...

Despite Karl Urban uttering, “I am the law” his overall demeanor was just one of the many disappointments in the new film take on the classic 2000 Ad hero, Judge Dredd. Dredd is out on home video this week from Lionsgate and it is amazing how bored I was watching it. The majority of the 96 film takes place in the Peach Trees Block and is effectively Dredd playing John McLane, trying to survive a sealed off building under siege.
It’s hard to watch this without comparing it with the Sylvester Stallone misfire of the 1990s. While the story sucked and the star violated the character by taking his helmet off a lot, it looked like the weekly comic come to life. The high tech, futuristic clutter of Mega City One was expertly captured, reminding us of how much the visual of Blade Runner derived from the British comic which has been around since 1977. Also,...

Dredd is heading to stores, and the date to mark down is January 8th. If you’ve been on board for the podcast you know that I’m looking forward to catching this one again. A surprisingly solid bit of action entertainment, and a film more clever than anyone would have ever guessed by looking at the original, Dredd took me by surprise, and I was a tough sell.
Look for it, mark your calendar, and while you wait give a listen to the podcast review here.
It looks like there are going to be some very cool special features as well, including a motion comic and a featurette that cover Dredd in and out of the films.

If you missed Dredd (review) during its theatrical run, wow, did you lose out on one of the better movie-going experiences of the year. Thankfully, with the flick hitting DVD and Blu-ray, you can now correct that awful lapse in judgment.
