(For nearly 30 years, Susan Haskins-Doloff was co-host and executive producer of the classic PBS TV show “Theater Talk,” featuring fascinating and witty interviews with the leading stars and other creators of Broadway’s greatest shows.)
Anyone who has ever seen “The Music Man” knows act 1 ends with the citizens of River City, Iowa anticipating and then celebrating in song the arrival of the Wells Fargo wagon, which is bringing to town musical instruments for the kids that Professor Harold Hill has conned their parents into buying. After the townspeople have sung two verses expressing their excitement, Winthrop Paroo, the younger brother of the show’s heroine, Marian Paroo, steps forward and sings a third verse of the song. The audience knows that Winthrop has a lisp which has made him hesitant to talk, but here he is so joyful, that he is sufficiently unselfconscious to express himself in song. As...

This year’s Oscars telecast incorporated reunions of cast members from classic movies such as “The Godfather,” “Pulp Fiction,” and “Juno.” Last year’s Tony Awards actually did something similar, bringing together cast members from different Broadway classics such as “Hairspray,” “Ragtime,” “Rent,” and “Wicked” for performances as the industry was fighting to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the Tonys will be presenting their landmark 75th annual ceremony this year, I think it would be even more fitting if they reunite more co-stars from Broadway classics of yesteryear to perform or even present awards. Here are some suggestions. Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know which you’d most like to see.

Alan Menken on Howard Ashman, and honouring his work in the new Beauty & The Beast movie...
Alan Menken, in partnership with the late Howard Ashman, won two of his many Oscars for his work on 1991’s Disney classic, Beauty & The Beast. Yet come the new take on the film, that’s heading into cinemas next week, Menken was – bizarrely – not involved from day one.
Instead, after Bill Condon had been hired to direct the film, choreographer Anthony Van Lasst suggested to Menken that they meet up. “I flew down to Washington”, Menken told an assembled throng of reporters (including your lowly Den Of Geek correspondent(, “and I met Bill there”.
The meeting went well. “It was great. First of all his work was fantastic. I loved meeting him. Instantly I was struck by what a smart, thoughtful and directed kind of guy he is. On the basis...

After establishing himself as resident doorman, stage manager and sex slave at the Caffe Cino, the historic Cornelia Street birthplace of Off-Off Broadway and America's gay theatre movement, Robert Patrick summoned up the courage to join the ranks of the venue's resident staff of playwrights Lanford Wilson, Tom Eyen and William Hoffman among them to begin submitting his own creations to owner Joe Cino. Eventually, the Broadway production of Kennedy's Children would help Patrick gain recognition as one of the significant dramatic voices emerging from New York's downtown scene.

"It was the music of something beginning..." ("Ragtime," Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty)Whether you are just starting out as an actor, thinking of leaving the business, or changing roles within the business, going through a transition can be complicated and emotionally draining. But it doesn't have to be. Here are a few tips on how to stay sane, strong, and focused."I am changing. I'll be better than I am." ("Dreamgirls," Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen)1) Remember why you are doing it. You may feel like this isn't your decision to make, but it always is. If you are considering changing careers within the business, remember what's bothering you about your current career and what you want to change. If you are shifting from ingénue to young mom, remember the decrease in calls lately and the potential increase in possibilities when you go out for roles that are better suited to.

Alan Menken has won more Oscars — eight! — than anybody else alive. And no wonder. When you think of the smash hits that revived Walt Disney Animation, starting with The Little Mermaid in 1989 and continuing with Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, it’s impossible to separate the movies from the music. “Under the Sea,” “Part of Your World,” “Be Our Guest,” “Friend Like Me,” “A Whole New World” — they’re the stuff high school glee clubs are made of. Menken, with lyricists Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, gave us all of these ear confections, winning over audiences and the Academy in the process.
