When 1980’s Airplane! proved to be a massive hit, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of the year – up there with The Empire Strikes Back and Best Picture winner Kramer vs. Kramer – it was inevitable that it would get a sequel. But how often are comedy sequels good anyway? When have they ever really recaptured the magic and the laughter of the original? Well, Airplane II: The Sequel gave it a go…by basically being the same movie. Except this time around, Zaz wisely opted out, leaving the production without the strong leaders who reinvented the spoof genre. Instead, they got the guy who wrote Grease 2, one of the most notoriously awful sequels ever! So, strap in – no, not to an airplane but a space shuttle – as we find out: Wtf Happened to This Movie?!…The Sequel!

Barbara Baldavin, who appeared on three episodes of the original Star Trek and recurred on Medical Center before working in the casting department on shows including Dynasty and Trapper John, M.D., has died. She was 85.
Baldavin died Sunday of congestive heart failure at her home in Manhattan Beach, her son Marc D’Agosta told The Hollywood Reporter.
Baldavin portrayed phaser control officer Angela Martine on two first-season episodes of NBC’s Star Trek in 1966. On the first one, her wedding to Starfleet officer Robert Tomlinson (Stephen Mines) — with William Shatner’s Capt. Kirk presiding — was interrupted by a Romulan attack.
She then returned as Lt. Lisa, a communications officer and court reporter, on the series finale, “Turnabout Intruder,” which aired in June 1969.
Baldavin played Nurse Holmby on 51 episodes during the last six seasons (1970-76) of CBS’ Medical Center, starring Chad Everett and James Daly. She had appeared as another character on the first season.

This one delivers the 4K ‘experience’ — and David Lynch’s mesmerizing visuals and Angelo Badalamenti’s seductive music once again pull us into a different dimension. Four or five viewings down the line, the ‘storyline’ of this TV show-become-feature film is if anything less understandable. But it’s no less pleasantly weird — we can’t keep our eyes off of Naomi Watts and Laura Harring. My ‘quality’ section debates a question I’m getting more often: are 4K discs worth the upgrade?

Hunter embodied the clean-cut ‘beefcake’ image but was forced to deny his gay sexuality for years
Tab Hunter, the actor who found fame in the 1950s as a Hollywood heartthrob but who was forced to cover up his gay sexuality, has died aged 86. A Facebook account for Tab Hunter Confidential, a recently released documentary about him, posted the news, but did not give a cause of death.
Born Arthur Andrew Kelm in 1931, Hunter broke into movies in the 1950 film noir The Lawless after a spell in the coastguard as a teenager: he was given his screen alias by agent Henry Willson, who specialised in the pretty-boy “beefcake” stars of the time, such as Rock Hudson, Chad Everett, and Troy Donahue.

Actress Deanna Lund died on June 22 at her home in Century City of pancreatic cancer. She was 81.
Lund played one of the seven castaways trying to survive in a world of large, unfriendly people on the 1960s ABC series Land of the Giants. Her Valerie Scott was a selfish party girl on the Irwin Allen-created series, which aired for two seasons, from September 1968 until March 1970.
Set in the year 1983, 20th Century Fox's Land of the Giants revolved around the crew and passengers of the spaceship Spindrift, which on the way to London crashed on a planet whose humanoid inhabitants were hostile and unbelievably huge. The show was extremely expensive to make, costing a reported $250,000 an episode.
The sexy Lund had appeared as a redheaded lesbian stripper opposite Frank Sinatra in Tony Rome (1967) and as Anna Gram, a moll working for The Riddler (John Astin), on ABC's Batman, leading...

Deanna Lund, who starred in the late-’60s sci-fi series Land of the Giants and went on to appear in dozens of films and TV shows, died Friday. She was 81.
Lund played the heiress Valerie Scott on Land of the Giants, the 1968-70 cult drama credited by pre-disaster movie producer Irwin Allen, who was coming off the science fiction series Lost in Space and Voyage to the Bottom of the Seas. It followed a group whose flight encountered a time warp and dropped them into mid-1980s London. The kicker was that they were normal size but everything they encountered was gargantuan: All of them could lounge on a breakfast plate, and a housecat was a hissing behemoth. The series didn’t really click with viewers, though it certainly gave its prop crew some enjoyable work.

Here's a brief look – to be expanded – at Turner Classic Movies' June 2017 European Vacation Movie Series this evening, June 23. Tonight's destination of choice is Italy. Starring Suzanne Pleshette and Troy Donahue as the opposite of Ugly Americans who find romance and heartbreak in the Italian capital, Delmer Daves' Rome Adventure (1962) was one of the key romantic movies of the 1960s. Angie Dickinson and Rossano Brazzi co-star. In all, Rome Adventure is the sort of movie that should please fans of Daves' Technicolor melodramas like A Summer Place, Parrish, and Susan Slade. Fans of his poetic Westerns – e.g., 3:10 to Yuma, The Hanging Tree – may (or may not) be disappointed with this particular Daves effort. As an aside, Rome Adventure was, for whatever reason, a sizable hit in … Brazil. Who knows, maybe that's why Rome Adventure co-star Brazzi would find himself playing a Brazilian – a macho, traditionalist coffee plantation owner,...

'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' 2015: Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' movie is a domestic box office bomb: Will it be saved by international filmgoers? Directed by Sherlock Holmes' Guy Ritchie and toplining Man of Steel star Henry Cavill and The Lone Ranger costar Armie Hammer, the Warner Bros. release The Man from U.N.C.L.E. has been a domestic box office disaster, performing about 25 percent below – already quite modest – expectations. (See also: “'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' Movie: Bigger Box Office Flop Than Expected.”) This past weekend, the $80 million-budget The Man from U.N.C.L.E. collected a meager $13.42 million from 3,638 North American theaters, averaging $3,689 per site. After five days out, the big-screen reboot of the popular 1960s television series starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum has taken in a mere $16.77 million. For comparison's sake:...

'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' with Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' box office: Bigger domestic flop than expected? Before I address the box office debacle of Warner Bros.' The Man from U.N.C.L.E., I'd like remark upon the fact that 2015 has been a notable year at the North American box office. That's when the dinosaurs of Jurassic World smashed Hulk and his fellow Halloween-costumed Marvel superheroes of Avengers: Age of Ultron. And smashed them good: $636.73 million vs. $457.52 million. (See also: 'Jurassic World' beating 'The Avengers' worldwide and domestically?) At least in part for sentimental (or just downright morbid) reasons – Paul Walker's death in a car accident in late 2013 – Furious 7 has become by far the highest-grossing The Fast and the Furious movie in the U.S. and Canada: $351.03 million. Inland Empire
Written and directed by David Lynch
2006, USA
David Lynch’s last film is his most mentally exhausting and participatory, coming in at a minute under three hours. For as long as he has been active – approaching five decades now, from when he started making short films in the late ’60s – Inland Empire, a howling panic attack of deformed sights and sounds on top of one another, is his most artistic and abstractly made film, and one that mostly feels inspired by himself and his entire lead-up to it.
Insofar as emotions and stimuli, the results are, while astounding, something that demands more experimentation, mostly because of its effects on the viewer. That it is as effective as it is makes the case for why narrative conventionality is less a crucial element in matters of filmmaking than what the mind makes out of carefully treated scenes, bopping, quavering and...

Will Ferrell's newsroom comedy Anchorman may not have been a runaway box office hit on its initial release back in 2004, but it's one of those movies - packed with gut-busting one-liners and insanely funny set pieces - that gathered more fans with each new DVD/Blu-ray release and TV showing, and quickly ascended to comedy classic status.
For fans of Ron Burgundy and his dimwitted Channel 4 news comrades, the wait for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues has been a long one - especially when you consider that at one point it looked like it wouldn't happen at all. One thing you may not know about Anchorman, however, is that it already has a sequel. Well, sort of.
Wake Up, Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie first surfaced on the DVD release of Anchorman in 2004 and presents an entirely new feature-length adventure for Ron, Brick Tamland, Champ Kind and Brian Fantana.

One of the eggs hatches, releasing a snake-like malevolent creature that begins to hunt down the crew one by one. Directed by Peter Carter (Rituals), The Intruder Within has the dubious distinction of being one of the first full-on Alien rip-offs on television or film. (Roger Corman’s first attempt, the surreal Galaxy of Terror, would be released theatrically later that year.) It’s a typical early-eighties television yarn with flat visuals, story points timed for commercial breaks and very little onscreen violence. Jimmy Kimmel opened the 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in a bathroom stall, crying over a Botox-gone-bad experience, setting the tone for what would be a somewhat memorable, if not long, evening. Instead of endless dialog and live performances (with the exception of Josh Groban's surprise appearance for a mock-memoriam/tribute to Kimmel), the Emmy powers-that-be steered the show towards a more traditional forum by actually handing out awards. Thirty in all. Too long? Perhaps. But it is TV's biggest night and since watching the tube is still America's favorite past-time, it seems appropriate that it would take three hours to disperse those fancy gold statues to our favorite actors and shows. Kimmel started off by addressing the Nokia Theater attendees in his monolog. "It took you 10 hours to get ready, you sweltered in the heat and haven't had a carb in days," he said. Everett's career spanned across four decades but will be best remembered for Medical Center. Veteran actor James Daly played Doctor Paul Lochner and the two worked together for seven seasons. Chad Everett Leaves Behind Memorable TV Legacy With Our Favorite Shows
It was very sad hearing that Chad Everett had passed away from cancer, and more than a little surprising. I don't keep up on the health of celebrities so this may not be news, but it turns out that Everett had been battling Lung Cancer for a year and a half. During that time Everett had filmed an episode of Castle, appearing as Jerry Maddox in "The Blue Butterfly", and 14 episodes of Chemistry. Yes, Chad really was that tough.
Everett had a ton of memorable screen time under his belt, but my personal favorite will always be his turn as Dean Winchester in the Supernatural episode "The Curious Case of Dean Winchester". Everett nailed the lingo and mannerisms of Jensen Ackles with memorable, and very funny, perfection.

It's a sad day for classic television fans. Stars of two 1970s television series passed away on Tuesday.
Sherman Hemsley, best known for his work as George Jefferson in both The Jeffersons and All in the Family, died at his home in El Paso, Texas yesterday. He was 74 years old.
The Jeffersons ran for 10 years, and filmed 253 episodes, though the number of airings is countless due to its multiple runs in syndication. Though Hemsley retired from television acting in the nineties, he joined his Jeffersons costar, Isabel Sanford, to reprise their roles as George and Weezy Jefferson in guest spots in television shows as well as in commercials well into the 2000s.
In tribute to the actor, TV Land will air a four-hour Jeffersons marathon on Saturday, July 28th. The episodes will feature some of Hemsley's most memorable episodes.

Chad Everett, the broad-shouldered star of the 1970's television drama "Medical Center," has died. He was 75 and his daughter told the Associated Press that the cause was lung cancer. In the CBS drama, Gannon was often seen bucking the system and his older superior Dr. Paul Lochner (James Daly), but in real life, Everett was on the other side of the counterculture movement. Mulholland Dr. (2001) Direction and screenplay: David Lynch Cast: Naomi Watts, Justin Theroux, Laura Elena Harring, Dan Hedaya, Ann Miller, Robert Forster, Lee Grant, Chad Everett, Billy Ray Cyrus Oscar Movies Highly Recommended Naomi Watts, Laura Elena Harring, Mulholland Dr. Mulholland Dr., David Lynch's nightmarish take on Hollywood and the pursuit of the "American Dream," is impossible to pigeonhole as belonging to a particular genre. The film is part black comedy, part mystery thriller, part psychological drama, part horror movie; in fact, Mulholland Dr. boasts one of the most horrific endings ever filmed. Ultimately, what matters is that this amalgam of genres has turned out to be a long, bizarre, and brilliant effort, as screenwriter-director Lynch takes the viewer on a journey through an ambitious actress' psyche; the most haunting such journey since the one undertaken by faded silent-screen star Norma Desmond in Billy Wilder's Sunset Blvd. more than...

The move from feature film to web series isn’t always a smooth jaunt through the editing bay. For writer-director Marc Clebanoff that meant a hard look at what he had in his hands—a gritty indie action flick that would also prove to be one of David Carradine’s final films. But after taking their film Break out with modest success in the saturated indie market, he and Frank Krueger (who also stars in the film), re-imagined the whole project as a serialized online release, hoping new life as a web series would draw some critical attention that passed over its previous incarnation. After months in the editing room trying to pick apart a 93-minute narrative into an episodic, the team soft-launched their new series, now called No Clean Break on KoldCast in December. And this week, with the release of their fourth episode, the pair are looking to...

Full Force Films is one of three production companies that brought Break to audiences in 2009. The film is action and thriller rolled in one with some genre favourites starring. Michael Madsen, David Carridine, Chad Everett and Brooke Lewis connive, backstab, and seduce each other through much of the conflicted film. Two shows were out of the mix again last week, Fringe and Dollhouse, both of which will be absent this coming week as well.
Meanwhile, for the shows that did air first-run episodes this past week, the spotlight was on Thursday, which was a bit disappointing for ratings. Fox's airing of the World Series between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies dominated the airwaves, garnering a 10.6/17 share, according to Fast National ratings from The Nielsen Co. By comparison, even the reality juggernaut Survivor couldn't compete with America's favorite pastime, returning a 7.1/11 for its Survivor: Samoa iteration.
Both, however, finished well ahead of FlashForward, which is settling back down a bit. The ABC skein earned a 5.7 rating/9 share, matching the all time low it had back on Oct. 15. That's an eight percent drop from the previous week, and nine-and-a-half percent below its season average so far.

One of the most surprising twists in season five of Supernatural has been fan favorite Bobby Singer (Played by Jim Beaver) landing in a wheel chair at the hands of the manipulative Angel Zachariah. Bobby began establishing a legion of fans from the moment he first hit the screen, and those very same fans are looking forward to the moment that Bobby walks again. But, will he? I got to speak with Jim Beaver yesterday and he brought some insight to the crafting of this ‘damaged’ Bobby that suggests his condition may be one of the few threads of storyline to be treated with absolute realism.
"…I have no idea where they are going to go with this situation, but I wouldn’t assume that everything is going to be all right…"
Did you ever think that Bobby would become so popular on a show that seems skewed towards younger audiences?...

Chad Everett nabbed the part of Dean the Elder, and while his name didn't occur to us when we first started guessing who it might be, now that we've seen him, we can't imagine anyone else. Here's a brief synopsis of the episode: Bobby (Jim Beaver) risks his life by betting 25 years of his life on a poker game run by a witch. Dean tries to save Bobby but ends up drastically aging. The episode was written by Jen Klein (story) and Julie Siege (story and teleplay) with Robert Singer directing.
