- His first horse was called "Sonny" (although several different horses were actually used), and later in his career he had another horse called Dice. During the making of his Red Ryder series his horse was called Thunder. When Allan Lane took over the series, he kept Elliott's horse.

- He did advertisements for Viceroy cigarettes. He died of lung cancer in 1965. He was only 61 years old.
- He started his film career in 1925 making silents and becoming a very prolific bit player, usually uncredited, throughout the 1930s. His experience with horses led to roles in low-budget "B" westerns, finally leading to top-billed roles under the name "Wild Bill Elliott".
- In American's classic films of suspense, hardly any case was solved by the police. Bill Elliott in his last 5 films was the police lieutenant who solved the cases.
